Mariani Foundation is known for excellent publications in Neurology. This is probably the best book it has published. The quality of science is superb.Spreafico was very intelligent in choosing the themes of chapters and their writers. Every entity was discussed in deepness. This book provides the reader almost all knowledge needed to manage patients with these diseases. I think that the author should include in a next edition one chapter of EEG and invite Andre Palmini MD to colaborate.

        Book Description

The early steps in corticogenesis are decisive for the correct unfolding of neurogenesis, neuronal migration and differentiation under tight genetic control. In this monograph, the author outlines the main events in human preplate formation, the gradual transformation of the preplate into the cortical plate, and the establishment of the transient compartments of the foetal cortical wall. The main neuronal populations of the embryonic and foetal cortex are presented according to their timetable of appearance and the expression of developmentally relevant gene products, with the main focus on members of the Reelin-Dab1 signalling pathway, LIS1 and Doublecortin, all of which are crucial for cortical migration. The often significant developmental differences between the lissencephalic rodent brain, which has become the prevailing model of corticogenesis, and the highly differentiated, gyrated human brain are pointed out and discussed.

              Book Description

This is the first book that attempts to bring together what is known about the fundamental mechanisms that underlie the development of the cortex in mammals. Ranging from the emergence of the forebrain from the neural plate to the functioning adult form, the authors draw on evidence from several species to provide a detailed description of processes at each stage. Where appropriate, evidence is extrapolated from non-mammalian species to generate hypotheses about mammalian development. In contrast to other texts of developmental biology, Mechanisms of Cortical Development integrates information on regulatory processes at the levels of molecules, cells and metworks. The authors draw together an extensive literature on cellular development and structural morphology, biochemical and genetic events and hypotheses that have been subject to mathematical modelling. Important metholdogies, such as transgenics and formal modelling, are explained for the non-specialist. Major future challenges are clearly identified. This is a unique contribution to the literature, combining the fundamentals of experimental developmental neurobiology with accessible neural modelling. It will be essential reading for neuroscientists in general as well as those with a particular interest in development.

4 out of 5 stars Mechanisms of Cortical Development.......2000-05-12

The Mechanisms of Cortical Development describes current thinking about both the general principles and the specific stages of corticogenesis in an order that parallels their occurrence in development. The book begins by describing how cortical precursor cells in the ventricular zone know when to divide and when to migrate; where to migrate and where to stop; and what cell-type and which cortical layer to differentiate into. The book then discusses how the complex network of efferent and afferent connections between cortical and subcortical structures is formed, and the mechanisms that regulate naturally occurring cell death, which is an integral part of this process. The book finishes by considering the genesis of sensory `maps' and the receptive field properties of the sensory neurones therein. The text is clear and well written. The figures presented in each section are simple but informative. The general terms and principles used in the text are explicitly defined, and tables are provided that describe the many factors (e.g., trophic, extracellular matrix, and gene transcription factors) that have been implicated in cortical development - information that in of itself makes this book significant among neuroscience texts.

While it is clear from reading The Mechanisms of Cortical Development that much progress over the last few decades has been made towards understanding how the cortex forms, including the cellular, chemical and molecular processes involved, we may never completely understand how these different processes come together to create the complexity of the cortex. Where there is still little understanding, Price and Willshaw also consider the questions researchers in the field are currently studying, the hypotheses that have been proposed as answers to them, and an analyses of the techniques that are being used to test these hypotheses.

In short, this book should prove eminently useful to both specialists and students of neuroscience alike, especially given its unique perspective, which, reflecting the expertise of the authors, includes both biology and biological modeling. Instead of making the text too diverse, rather this dual perspective facilitates a more thorough consideration of the complex processes by which the cortex forms.

3 out of 5 stars Slow starter, but good book overall.......2007-08-31

I had a little trouble getting into this book but it really ended up being a nice read. The characters are not all that lovable, and some of the plot is a little far-fetched, but overall not too bad. I wouldn't give a gushing recommendation, but more like a "Give it a try- you might like it".

3 out of 5 stars Mostly good, but a bit negative towards Californians.......2007-07-05

"The Potluck Club" is a good story, but I would have enjoyed it much more without so many jabs at my home state, thank you very much. At first, I thought that the California-bashing was merely a hang-up of Evangeline's, since she seemed to be the Weezer of the bunch (see "Steel Magnolias") but it was present in many sections of the novel.

While I can understand the hostility of the book's characters towards Californians for driving up real estate prices and having different lifestyle expectations, I think it's a bit undeserved. For the record, people who leave California are not all selfish and obnoxious with bad driving skills. A good number of us are average people who can no longer afford to live in the Golden State, even those with so-called "high-paying" jobs. Needless to say, I don't appreciate the lack of sympathy in "The Potluck Club" for those in our situation.

Kudos to the authors for alienating potential readers, but it's a fine novel otherwise.

Although I am a Lutheran, I'm not a big fan of modern Christian lit. Some of it tends to be overly maudlin or moralistic. I really love this series, though. The characters are interesting and convincingly human. They wrestle with the problems of daily life and make mistakes just like you and me. The stories always make me smile and often make me laugh out loud. For those of you looking for a good read that will leave you wanting more, try this series. I can't wait for the next one!

5 out of 5 stars Books about food are always good.......2006-10-07

I've always been the type of person that enjoys a good book when eating. Somehow reading a book about food always makes the meal tastier even if what I'm reading isn't what I'm eating. "The Potluck Club" is another one of those great eating/reading books. It even comes complete with recipes from the dishes mentioned in the story in case you get a hankering for beef brisket, cinnamon rolls or broccoli casserole. I really enjoyed this book. It gave the story from many different angles, with the characters all have different personalities. The premise of the story deals with a group of women meeting together for prayer and potluck. The women are real, experiencing funny and heartbreaking events together. Each character has a background story that they try to keep secret from the others. I am very glad that the book did not fault Goldie for her decision in her situation with her husband. Other books would have let the matter slide by or have Goldie give in. My favorite scene in the book dealt with a certain bear and a chocolate cake. I had to put the book down because I was laughing so hard. (Of course if I had been in that situation I wouldn't be.)

My only complaint was the character of Clay. I'm not sure why his viewpoint is in the story. I understand he's a newspaper journalisty trying to get a story for the paper, but he just came across as annoying, nosy, and stalkerish. I also hope the conflict with Lisa Leann and Evangeline is either resovled or more fleshed out. This is a good book for women, perfect for a book club to read and discuss over a potluck! and yes! the library just got book 2 in.

The church ladies live on, and if you liked the first two Potluck Club books, you'll love this one. I just know these ladies are members of my church, and if you look over your shoulder, you may see them in the pew behind you, too. The sometimes zany, sometimes crotchety, and sometimes out-of-control characters are always charming. Shepherd and Everson have delivered another fun-filled read with some unexpected results. Things I wanted to happen didn't, but it was okay. With surprises at each turn, this third book of the series does indeed Take the Cake! And the recipes are delicious, too.

This is the third book in the Potluck Club series, and I felt like I was visiting old friends, and catching up on the news. Each character is special, and I find I can hardly put the book down, waiting to see what is going to happen next. I primarily read mysteries, but a friend highly recommended The Potluck Club. This series has totally captivated me.

The girls are back in the third novel in the Potluck Club series. There's a wedding in the works in Summit View! But before anyone can say I do, the women seem to attract many adventures coming their way. Evie's worried about tying the knot while Goldie is trying to resist fixing her relationship. Vonnie's trying to get used to being a new mother while Lizzie's having all her family descend on her at once. Donna seems to have the whole world throw its problems at her feet while Lisa Leann just wants to make everyone know that she's there. These women are all connected through their friendship and being there for each other when they need it the most.

Another taste tempting pleaser! I really really love this series. I really like all the different POVs from the characters. You would read about an event from Evie's outlook and then change characters and find out that Donna didn't see things the same way. I really felt for Donna in this book. So much stuff happened to her that I wished she had more story time. She's my favorite character out of the group. Lisa Leann is still a touch character to like but she's gotten better as she's learned how to deal with the other women. Even Evie finds herself giving in to Lisa Leann's demands. The only character whose story I didn't find satisfying was Lizzie's. She has her whole family in her house including her mother who she doesn't get along with but nothing really comes out of it. I would have liked to read more about that relationship. I got a hoot out of Clay becoming transformed to impress Donna. I can't believed he even got a manicure. But the results were definitely worth it for him even though he didn't plan that specific outcome. Reading this book definitely puts you in a good mood. I've grown really attached to these characters and am wanting more! Once again there are tons of recipes for all the yummy dishes that are mentioned. So if get hungry while reading, put the book down and start cooking and you'll be able to eat your words.

                      Book Description

Postmodernism, with its denial of objective knowledge and deconstruction of language, has become a major topic of discussion in academic circles everywhere. How are evangelical thinkers responding to this new trend? In Postmodernizing the Faith, respected theologian Millard Erickson explores six evangelical responses-both positive and negative-to postmodernism and offers his own reaction to the movement. Erickson's purpose is "to introduce readers to postmodernism, to sensitize them to the importance of the issues, and to show them some samples of differing evangelical responses." Following an introductory chapter describing postmodernism, Erickson presents the responses of three evangelicals who consider the movement incompatible with orthodox Christianity. Next he details the thought of three evangelicals who believe "postmodernism is a development that needs to be accepted, and Christian theology done in light of it, and incorporating at least some of it." In each chapter Erickson offers a judicious critique, highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses of the particular view being discussed.

The Potluck ladies are back with more adventures and more food to share. In this go-round, once again each character has her own back story that takes special meaning in her life. Evie is trying to get attention of her sheriff boyfriend and somehow becomes engaged to another man! Goldie is trying to settle into her new single life, but her former husband keeps trying to win her back. Vonnie brings her long lost son to meet the family of the father he never knew while Donna seems to be catching his eye and that of reporter Clay. Lizzy's adult son has moved back home after being separated from his wife. And then there's Lisa Leann, whose wedding shop is a hit and she starts her own column with a little help from the tidbits she picks up around the store. The characters all intertwined through their potlucks which bring a sense of togetherness to the story.

Once again, I had a grand time while reading this book. It was funny, the characters were fleshed out more, annoying characters made no so annoying anymore, and lots of good food mentioned throughout. People are more open in this book and not afraid to speak what's on their mind. I was really glad that Lisa Leann's daughter put her foot down to her mother's advice column. I felt like it was about time someone put a stop to her gossiping ways and especially from someone who Lisa Leann would actually listen to. It might get confusing at first about who's who, but each character's story is every bit delicious as the recipes they offer. In the last book, I had complained about how Clay felt like an unnecessary character in the story. In this book, he's more apart of the story as we learn more about his personality. In fact, the reader becomes sympathetic towards him and his unrequited feelings toward Donna. The problem with the love triangle is that you want Donna to end up with Vonnie's son but you want Clay to feel happy too. I also wish that Goldie would be able to be free to move on with her life, but I don't think Jack will allow that. You definitely need some goodies while reading this book, because it will give you the munchies. Can't wait for the third!

I was very pleasantly surprised to find that the second book of the Potluck Club was even better than the first! The characters are very well rounded and interesting, deep and thoughtful. The ladies go through realistic trials and tribulations and progress and grow in realistic ways. I like that there are not "pat" answers to all the problems, but the ladies learn to trust God more in the midst of all the complications. I'm looking forward to the next installment!

Reading this delicious and savory sequel to The Potluck Club was like being drawn to a banquet table because of the glorious smells. Each character serves up a new, tasty dish to enjoy. Vonnie, Evie, Goldie, Lisa Leann, Lizzie, and Donna are the main course at this banquet table of life, with minor characters providing the appetizers and desserts. The characters are full of secrets, loves unrequieted, and on different journeys that require serious re-examination of their faiths, their pasts, and their desires. What Linda Evans Shepherd and Eva Marie Everson manage to cook up in this engaging story of the women of The Potluck Club is a story that is truly a buffet of flavors--someting there for everyone to dish up on their plate. You'll be inspiried at how these six diverse women deal with real life issues, employing faith, forgiveness, family and love.

My mouth is already watering for the third installment of The Potluck Club, as I'm certain we'll get the chance to feast on the news of whose going to win Donna's heart. Wont' we?

4 out of 5 stars Some disconnectedness, still good Christian read.......2006-08-15

The Potluck Club: Trouble's Brewing by Linda Evans Shepherd and Eva Marie Everson is the second book in the Potluck Club series. This book picks up shortly after the first one left off. Evie and the sheriff are still dating (but not for long), Donna is trying to hide her deepest secret, Clay is still trying to get up the courage to ask Donna out (and starts a weight-loss plan), Lizzie's married son has moved home, and everyone else's lives are in equal chaos. Even the club itself seems to be falling apart. And that does seem to be the weak point of this book. While we get to see each woman's struggles, there are few scenes of the women all together working as a team which was a real strength in the previous book. Maybe the author intended to create the sense of disconnection between the women. There are only two times in the book when all the women get together. The book was definitely an enjoyable read, and the teaser at the end of this book for the next one will make you tear out your hair until the third comes out.

Recipes are basic, simple to prepare. Mixed with Texas humor and wit. Ingredients can be found at most grocery stores, even small town. Quite a large selection of recipes from wives, as well as husbands. Just plain good reading! Also available, is Potluck on the Pedernales-Second Helping.
