      Book Description

The Oxford Handbook of Midwifery is the first pocket-sized handbook to provide midwives with everything they need for successful practice. It contains concise, practical and expert guidance on all aspects of the midwife's role, from pre-conceptual advice to the final postnatal examination of the mother and baby. Giving a complete picture of the role of the midwife, the handbook's contents reflect the mother's journey through conception, pregnancy and birth. Helping you achieve the best possible results for your patients, the authors offer a wealth of recommendations, guidance and information from their years of experience. Whatever situation you are in, the Oxford Handbook of Midwifery will give you the information you need. The handbook covers the vast majority of scenarios you will ever encounter. The fundamentals of midwifery are divided into five main sections, covering antenatal care; normal labour and birth; complicated labour and birth; infant feeding and postnatal care. The handbook also gives information rarely covered in standard midwifery texts, including sexual health, complementary therapies, common blood values, investigations, and midwifery emergencies. Key interventions are laid out as algorithms to aid quick assimilation of the crucial facts. So you can find the information you need without delay, the book is clearly laid out with one topic per page, and written in an easily readable note-based style. Blank pages for writing notes, observations and local protocols allow your handbook to be customised to meet your specific needs. All this is available at your fingertips, in a pocket-sized handbook with hard-wearing plastic covers. Written by practising midwives and checked by subject experts, the Oxford Handbook of Midwifery is a unique and invaluable companion to practising and student midwives, lecturers, and to all those who need to understand the special issues associated with midwifery practise.

                      Book Description

In this book, the author applies non-associative algebras to physics. Okubo covers topics ranging from algebras of observables in quantum mechanics and angular momentum and octonions to division algebra, triple-linear products and YangSHBaxter equations. He also discusses the non-associative gauge theoretic reformulation of Einstein's general relativity theory. Much of the material found in this volume is not available in other works. The book will therefore be of great interest to graduate students and research scientists in physics and mathematics.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Okobo's Octonion and Other Algebras Volume.......2000-03-29

Of all the books on octonions, division algebras, Clifford algebras, and related fields, none is more precise, theoretically deep, mathematically clear and logically organized and coherent and concise than Okubo's book. It requires more mathematical sophistication than most books on the subject, but any reader should be able to hire a consultant or tutor specializing in mathematical physics or even advanced algebra to clarify in ordinary language or an approximation thereof what Okubo is saying. A reader of Okubo's book will obtain a deeper insight into the mathematics of these algebras than from any other book, including the relationships between different types of algebras such as Hurwitz and non-Hurwitz algebras. The book is a little short on physical applications, although there are enough to provide impetus for reading other books, but the mathematics is absolutely profound and should not be missed by anyone. I have cited Okubo in papers at conferences and publications of mine.

                        Book Description

There are some wonderfully bizarre ideas in physics, and it seems a pity to keep them locked up in small boxes, available only to an esoteric coterie of key holders. Brian Ridley's book sets out to survey in simple, nonmathematical terms what physics has to say about the fundamental structure of the universe. He deals with all the basic concepts of modern physics: elementary particles, black holes, gravity, quantum theory, time, mass, relativity and energy; this new edition also includes coverage of more recently emerging ideas, including strings, imaginary time and chaos. Ridley's clear and witty account gives an exciting introduction to the nonspecialist while offering a fresh perspective to scientists themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Read Between the Notes.......2007-03-24

The author seems very adept at bringing to light the fundamental essence of physics knowledge, particularly the unresolved questions. With his help, I was able to pinpoint what appears to be a surviving trace of Aristotle in physics, particularly in wave theory.

For some time I've sort of surmised that a wave is actually no more than a pattern or grouping of particles. As such, it is simply an object like any other object. Reading Ridley's book, it is clearly apparent to me that distinguishing between waves and objects has created a difficulty.

The soliton is an attempt to reconcile this difficulty. Differentiating it from waves and objects may simply be a persisting affinity for Aristotelian categorization with some Newtonian mechanics mixed in. (Thankfully, it is at least uncorrupted by probability theory?)

Opening the discussion of electomagnetic vs mechanical waves, the author states: "But then horrible questions arise. Mechanical waves cannot travel through space devoid of matter. They are a cooperative motion of atoms or molecules, and their velocity is determined by the properties of the matter in which they travel. ... "So what, materially, is vibrating in empty space?"

Well, this is rather interesting, you know? I mean, can it be more clear that by creating a philosophical divide between waves and objects, we are presented with such a problem? By recognizing that waves are simply patterns of particles, we escape from this problem, since it is no mystery that objects traverse empty space (if such even exists, at least outside the place reserved for Newton's actual accomplishments).

There's also the matter of the anomoly of diffraction of waves (Shroedinger) which, I believe, is hereby resolved. What's next? :-)

In any case, my hat's off to Ridley - he's amazing.

5 out of 5 stars An idea rich exciting book!.......2000-11-15

I'll never forget the excitement I felt when I first read an earlier edition of this book about 8 years ago. I know of no other book of comparable size which surveys so concisely and with such inspiration what physics has to say about the universe. All using little or no mathematics, in less than 200 pages!

This book brings to the reader a genuine wonder for the universe we live in. Ridley is very adept at pointing out not only what we understand, but also what we don't. ``Physics is about the simple things of the Universe,'' Ridley begins, and this so true! So many things we can only observe, puzzle over, and not have the slightest idea of how to understand on some deeper level. If you want to know what we do know, and get a glimmer of how much we don't---this is the book for you.

I find myself re-reading this book at least once a year, just for the sense of mystery, excitement, and awe it brings to me. I heartily recommend it!

There are so many popular science books out there, but only a few outstanding ones. This small book is so perfect in concepts and so well written that no one will be able to ignore his/her own fascination. Ridley writes so well and with so much understanding that you will want to read it again and again -- for pure and simple enlightment!

This deceptively slim volume, while an easy read, is so densely packed as to be nearly impossible to digest in a single reading. Ridley expertly illustrates fundamental concepts in a warm, humor-rich voice that in no way resembles the dusty monotone of the average classroom text. I plan to re-read it many times over.

I have always enjoyed Isaac Asimov's nonfiction books but this one is just too dry and too technical. While he usually excels at explaining difficult scientific concepts to the laymen, he lost this layman a lot. I did enjoy the historical parts of the book and the last chapter on longevity was worth reading the entire book to get to. It was its one shining moment.

                          2 out of 5 stars A rare non-fiction book from a sci-fi Grand Master........1997-05-11

This book is an exploration of a number of scientific related information that Asimov knows so well. It is a bit dry and not like his novels.

More of a textbook than anything else.

                              Book Description

How do things persist? Are material objects spread out through time just as they are spread out through space? Or is temporal persistence quite different from spatial extension? This key question lies at the heart of any metaphysical exploration of the material world, and it plays a crucial part in debates about personal identity and survival. Katherine Hawley explores and compares three theories of persistence -- endurance, perdurance, and stage theories - investigating the ways in which they attempt to account for the world around us. Having provided valuable clarification of its two main rivals, she concludes by advocating stage theory. Such a basic issue about the nature of the physical world naturally has close ties with other central philosophical problems. How Things Persist includes discussions of change and parthood, of how we refer to material objects at different times, of the doctrine of Humean supervenience, and of the modal features of material things. In particular, it contains new accounts of the nature of worldly vagueness, and of what binds material things together over time, distinguishing the career of a natural object from an arbitrary sequence of events. Each chapter concludes with a reflection about the impact of these metaphysical debates upon questions about our personal identity and survival. Both students and professional philosophers will find that this wide-ranging study provides ideal access to the lively modern debate about an ancient metaphysical problem.

4 out of 5 stars Fine book on the persistence of physical objects.......2006-07-19

This is a good book. Hawley writes very clearly, her book is authoritative and well-argued.

Hawley's strategy has two parts: first, with a "divide-and-conquer" method she wants to show that four-dimensionalism is more plausible than three-dimensionalism, and that her own version of four dimensionalism (stage theory) is better than perdurantism. Four-dimensionalism is the thesis that physical objects persist in virtue of having temporal (as well as spatial) parts. This is an elegant and popular solution of the problem of change. The problem is how to accommodate Leibniz's Law with the fact that things change. Four-dimensionalism says that since any Objects O persists from time t1 to t2 by having a part O(t1) and O(t2), and O(t1) and O(t2) have different properties, they are therefore different objects and don't violate Leibniz's Law.
Hawley's own version of four-dimensionalism is stage theory. Stage theorists hold that strictly speaking temporal parts don't make up a perduring object; when we refer to a physical object, we refer to an actual temporal part of it. Hence we cannot refer to the same object at two different times, at least not if 'the same' means 'identical'. Hawley's arguments for stage theory are based largely on considerations about the philosophy of language.

The second type of Hawley's arguments claim that from all theories of persistence, stage theory is the only one that doesn't commit one to restricted views about other metaphysical issues. For instance, stage theory is compatible with most theories of vagueness and modality. These are perhaps the most sophisticated and developed parts of the book.

interestingly the book doesn't start very promising, but towards the end it gets better and better. The only weakness is that sometimes she dismisses three-dimensionalist explanations too quickly. Hawley's views are often contraintuitive, but she is smart (in the good sense) in explaining philosophical worries away. I recommend this book for everyone interested in the metaphysics of persistence.

                                      Book Description

This anthology of translated short stories by Japanese writers captures the city of Tokyo through most of the twentieth century--a period of war, bombing, urbanization, and modernization, in short, constant change that has altered and continues to alter the very geography of the city. The eighteen stories, varying from literary sketches to popular fiction, picture everyday life in different parts of the city--in its nightclubs, department stores, bars, homes, and working-class neighborhoods. For the tourist, armchair traveler, or long-time resident, this book is a literary excursion into Tokyo illuminated by the evocative, and often ironic, words of its writers.
These expertly translated stories range from reflections on deaths in his family by Akutagawa Ryunosuke, the venerated master of the short story, written just before his own suicide; to a story of an all-too-brief affair in the old part of Tokyo by Hayashi Fumiko; to an unsettling tale of high politics and possible blackmail by the ever-popular Mishima Yukio. The volume also introduces the work of Ikeda Michiko and Inaba Mayumi, who have never been translated into English before.
Lawrence Rogers's introduction leads us on an intimate meditative stroll through the city's various districts--from the marble and mahogany of the business district to the skid row of San'ya--describing each in delightful vignettes. As an introduction to Tokyo and to the literary imaginations it has inspired, this engaging book will reveal something new about the nature of Japan's capital to all who wander through its pages.

This anthology of short stories is a brilliantly selected set of works. I was introduced to this novel because it was a required text for Rogers-sensei's Japanese Literature class. I opened the novel and was immediately intrigued; for every short story, Rogers includes an introduction that is very helpful in understanding the text. Rogers includes well-known authors such as Kawabata Yasunari and Ihara Saikaku, but also some pretty amazing writers I have never heard of. My favorite translation is Mishima Yukio's "Fountains in the Rain." I heartily recommend this short anthology to anyone interested in understanding Japanese culture through literary works.

5 out of 5 stars Sensei is brilliant........2005-08-26

I read this book before I enrolled in any classes with Dr. Rogers, before I ever moved to Hilo, Hawai'i to persue a Japanese Studies major. My opinion may still be biased, but I was highly enamoured from the very beginning, before even meeting or talking to him.

I really love the selection of authors. Some are well-known, although these pieces are not. Others are not well-known, at least in America. Sensei chose material that would be largely unfamiliar to an American audience, which suits me just perfectly. If I wanted things I'd already read, why would I bother? I had read none of these stories, however, and was unknowledgable with more than half of the authors.

The translations are highly readable. I'm impressed at what a good writer Sensei is. As I haven't read the Japanese originals, nor am I immediately capable of reading them, I can't comment on their accuracy, however, I am Dr. Rogers' student, after all, and I know his fastidious habits.

One of the best features of this text is the large introduction Sensei has penned. Interesting, insightful, readable and charming, it shows that Sensei is not just a translator and re-writer but a writer himself, and as I said above, I was delighted by his skill. I'd happily devour an entire book of his essays on Japan. I have so much to learn from him!

I couldn't recommend this any more highly. While the stories are readable and entertaining in their own right, they'll also give you insight into Tokyo, the main thrust of the book. Their organization by geography of the city is a cute bonus.
