The perfect Mikado.......2007-08-31

Well, I don't know if it is perfect or not. However, it does have bar numbers, which is more than can be said for most of the vocal editions out there. AND they match the published full scores.

When you are rehearsing or doing any type of serious work with the music, being able to reference bar numbers is invariable. "Second bar of third system on page #148", just doesn't cut it.

Great for learning both dialogue and vocal score for anyone who is taking part in this production or who is just considering auditioning.

Excellent Score.......2003-07-22

Being a serious fan of Gilbert and Sullivan's work and a performer in several of their collaborations, this is a wonderful score. It has every piece of dialogue, every song, and a great cover. If you are ever going to be in a production of 'The Mikado', buy this score!

Great Edition for Performer.......2001-10-17

As a performer, the most important asset of a score is legibility and freedom from errors. This PV is superb in that it is very legible and corrects errors from prior PV's. It is also inexpensive enough that a performer need not fear guilty about writing in the margins or breaking the binding. While not a critical edition, it has everything that a performer would want in a PV, and I would unhesitatingly recommend it over ANY other PV presently on the market, even those which have been "authenticated".

A grain or two of truth among the chaff.......2006-01-04

The biographical basic facts are no doubt correct but the book is ruined by an excessive amount of wild and fanciful theories and conclusions not supported by the facts. I suspect the only readers who would find this book interesting are the Lytton uber-groupies, of which I suspect Brian Jones is probably the only one left!

Quite laughably the back cover blurb states that the book is extremely valuable to academic institutions - quite why the author is vainglorious enough to think this is unclear but it isn't an opinion I would share.

The book is also grossly over-priced for what is it and is in no way an essential purchase for enthusiasts of the G&S operas. Had I been able to see this in a bookshop before purchase there is absolutley no way I would have ever bought it. For anyone interested in D'Oyly Carte biographies there is an excellent series of biographies published at a fraction of the price by Bunthorne Books. Much better vaue for money than the self important, over-inflated hyperbole and exageration you will find in the pages of this book!!

Indispensable.......2001-07-30

Any lover of this Gilbert & Sullivan masterpiece will gain a fuller appreciation of it by being able to follow the lyrics and dialog while listening to the operetta. The score also has a nicely written preface and synopsis of the story. Although knowing how to read music is not essential to the enjoyment of this Mikado full score, buyers that do read music will gain an even greater appreciation of it by being able to follow each instrumental line along with the lyrics of the songs. The Dover score is beautifully printed at a very bargain price to boot. Everyone can derive a great deal of pleasure from this score, no matter what level of musical training they possess. Highly Recommended! (P.S. I understand that the full score of The Pirates of Penzance is due for release this fall)

Gets Better with Repeated Viewings.......2007-09-25

I don't have much to add to the many comments already here, nor do I have a clue whether this and the other admirable Stratford G&S DVD's will ever be reissued. I just wanted to comment that there seems to be a lot of confusion about certain details of this Mikado; namely, who directed it (some say Campbell and some say MacDonald but who really cares?), what year it was taped (1982? 1993? can't be 1993 because the topical allusions are strictly 80's!), how good the sound is (mono but very clear and reasonably lifelike), and whether any of the sound track was dubbed (I can't tell, sometimes it almost appears so, usually not, but since there was a live audience the singers can't have just mouthed their words, no way!, and how do those who claim they did know? On the other hand, the closeups suggest the cameras were right onstage--too bad for the audience--or else the closeups were taped later). Anyhow, all this quibbling aside, all the Stratford G&S videos are warmly recommended--Iolanthe, Pirates, Pinafore, Gondoliers, even the black & white Trial by Jury--though these dance-intensive and a bit campy productions (much to their benefit) may take some getting used to for traditionalist D'Oyly Carte lovers (ain't many of those around any more!). Plus the Australian Opera Patience is very good too in a similar style.

Put it on your Little List.......2007-02-18

Despite the simplicity of staging, this has to be one of the most refreshing productions of "The Mikado" available. For instance, Koko is not the high-strung clown as is usually played, but is actually the straight man, reacting to the ill-assorted clowns around him, most notably a tall, willowy Pooh-Bah who is most likely gay, a group of amazingly clumsy samurai, three little maids who are quite silly, and a Katisha who looks like a demented Margaret Thatcher. Minor changes in lyrics and dialog can be forgive because the whole production is so filled with fun and charm that it is impossible not to like it. I haven't been able to watch it enough times. Don't miss it.

Memories of G&S in Stratford.......2006-07-28

I had the honor and pleasure of watching this 2 or 3 times at Stratford (including the night they taped this performance). Each time was even more entertaining and fun than the last. It was very evident while watching it both live and on tape/DVD that they were having as much fun performing it, as we the audience were watching it.Eric Donkin was a joy to watch and taken from us too soon. Richard McMillan as the grand Poh Bah was HILLARIOUS. Very enjoyable!!! :)

This performance is in the spirit of the original unlike the fancy BBC productions which I find stilted.

Great costumes, but scratchy sound and ugly additions.......2005-11-24

The costumes & staging are great. The orchestra is fine. Yet, this disappoints on several counts. The sound is monophonic and, while clear in most places, is scratchy on many male voices, as if the mics were not set up right. That is disappointing in operetta, where one wants to hear the words. Even more disturbing are the broad added stereotypes of Japanese culture, which I don't remember from other versions. The characters don't need to say "ahh so" for us to know they are Japanese! It adds nothing; the show uses more subtle humor to get its points across. And that, finally, is where this production fails for me. G&S were sly observers of society, and their observations are still sharp and funny today. When the piece is overloaded with crude stereotypes & the parts aren't played with even a modicum of serious acting (and I don't mean solemnity), the point is lost! So despite the beautiful sets and costumes, the acting in this production is far too hammy, broad, and crude to capture the true spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan.
