Pathogenicity Islands and the Evolution of Pathogenic Microbes: Volume I (Current Topics in Microbiology and Immunology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540426817 |
Book Description
It has been known for a number of years that not only pathogenicity islands but also plasmids and bacteriophages are able to carry genes whose products are involved in pathogenic processes. Accordingly, such elements and their products play an important role in pathogenesis due to the intestinal E. coli as well due to Shigellae. Another interesting aspect which is reflected in different articles is that genomes evolve by acquisition of new pieces of DNA following gene transfer, but also by genome reduction. Different mechanisms include the deletion of sequences or the elimination of functions by the accumulation of point mutations or rearrangements.

Karst Hydrogeology & Geomorphology
Derek C. Ford , and Paul Williams Manufacturer: Wiley ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0470849975 |
Book Description
Originally published in 1989, Karst Geomorphology and Hydrology became the leading textbook on karst studies. This new textbook has been substantially revised and updated. The first half of the book is a systematic presentation of the dissolution kinetics, chemical equilibria and physical flow laws relating to karst environments. It includes details of the many environmental factors that complicate their chemical evolution, with a critique of measurement of karst erosion rates. The second half of the book looks at the classification system for cave systems and the influence of climate and climatic change on karst development. The book ends with chapters on karst water resource management and a look at the important issues of environmental management, including environmental impact assessment, environmental rehabilitation, tourism impacts and conservation values. Practical application of karst studies are explained throughout the text.

Geometric Optics on Phase Space (Texts and Monographs in Physics)
Kurt B. Wolf Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540220399 |
Book Description
Symplectic geometry, well known as the basic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics, is also the foundation of optics. In fact, optical systems (geometric or wave) have an even richer symmetry structure than mechanical ones (classical or quantum). The symmetries underlying the geometric model of light are based on the symplectic group. Geometric Optics on Phase Space develops both geometric optics and group theory from first principles in their Hamiltonian formulation on phase space. This treatise provides the mathematical background and also collects a host of useful methods of practical importance, particularly the fractional Fourier transform currently used for image processing. The reader will appreciate the beautiful similarities between Hamilton's mechanics and this approach to optics. The appendices link the geometry thus introduced to wave optics through Lie methods. The book addresses researchers and graduate students.

The Geometric Phase in Quantum Systems: Foundations, Mathematical Concepts, and Applications in Molecular and Condensed Matter Physics (Theoretical and Mathematical Physics)
J. Zwanziger Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:

ASIN: 3540000313 |
Book Description
Aimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them.

Geometric Phases in Classical and Quantum Mechanics (Progress in Mathematical Physics)
Dariusz Chruscinski , and Andrzej Jamiolkowski Manufacturer: Birkhäuser Boston ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 081764282X |
Book Description
This work examines the beautiful and important physical concept known as the "geometric phase," bringing together different physical phenomena under a unified mathematical and physical scheme.
Several well-established geometric and topological methods underscore the mathematical treatment of the subject, emphasizing a coherent perspective at a rather sophisticated level. What is unique in this text is that both the quantum and classical phases are studied from a geometric point of view, providing valuable insights into their relationship that have not been previously emphasized at the textbook level.
Key topics and features:
• Background material presents basic mathematical tools on manifolds and differential forms.
• Topological invariants (Chern classes and homotopy theory) are explained in simple and concrete language, with emphasis on physical applications.
• Berry's adiabatic phase and its generalization are introduced.
• Systematic exposition treats different geometries (e.g., symplectic and metric structures) living on a quantum phase space, in connection with both abelian and nonabelian phases.
• Quantum mechanics is presented as classical Hamiltonian dynamics on a projective Hilbert space.
• Hannay’s classical adiabatic phase and angles are explained.
• Review of Berry and Robbins' revolutionary approach to spin-statistics.
• Problems at the end of each chapter.
Graduate students in mathematics with some prior knowledge of quantum mechanics will learn about a class of applications of differential geometry and geometric methods in quantum theory. Physicists and graduate students in physics will learn techniques of differential geometry in an applied context.

m Summer School in Analysis and Mathematical Physics 1998 Cuernavaca , Salvador Perez-Esteva , and Carlos Villegas-Blas Manufacturer: American Mathematical Society ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0821821156 |
Book Description
The first Summer School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Cuernavaca) offered graduate and advanced undergraduate students courses on modern topics in the overlap between analysis and physics. This volume contains the expanded notes from the lectures by Brian Hall, Alejandro Uribe, and David Borthwick. The articles introduce readers to mathematical methods of classical and quantum mechanics and the link between these two theories: quantization and semiclassical analysis. Hall writes about holomorphic methods in analysis and mathematical physics and includes exercises. Uribe's lectures covered trace formulae, in particular asymptotic behavior and the relationship between the asymptotics and the geometric properties of the classical system. Borthwick presents an introduction to Kähler quantization, including the moment map, the orbit method, and symmetry and reduction. The exposition in the entire volume is geared to introducing graduate students with a basic knowledge of mathematics into areas of active research.
