Book Description
The molecular structure of interleukin-2 (IL-2) and that of its receptor subunits provide a basis for understanding lymphocyte activation by IL-2 and the generation of effector cells capable of mediating cytotoxicity towards tumors. This book provides an up-to-date account of IL-2, its effect
on lymphocyte function, and clinical applications. Internationally know experts review the molecular aspects of cell signalling, giving insight on the in vivo pathways of activation likely to be important in determining clinical responses. They also examine the use of cytokines, particularly IL-2,
in the treatment of cancer, and describe the results of recent clinical trials using IL-2, as well as of adoptive cell therapy. Providing a clear account of recent progress, the book also reviews the problems involved in attempting to improve the therapeutic benefit of IL-2, along with the
importance of mechanisms which subverse IL-2 responses. This is the most up-to-date account of molecular research and clinical trials in this area, and will be of great benefit to students and researchers in immunology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and oncology who are interested in this vitally
important topic.

Book Description
Located 400 meters below sea level, at the tectonically active irregular boundary between the Mediterranean and Arabic plates, the Dead Sea is the site of many interesting phenomena. It provides a modern analog for ancient pull-apart basins and allows researchers to examine the process of evaporite deposition from deep water. It also offers insight into the adaptive ability of the life form living in the hypersaline brine. This book, based on a conference held in Tel Aviv in December 1993, focuses on the geophysics, geochemistry, hydrology, and climatology of the Dead Sea region.

Third Printing of the 1997 edition(?) or new Second edition?.......2006-01-19
Readers: This is the third printing of the 1997 edition of the book. Not sure why Amazon has this listed as a 2006 book. I own the 1997 first printing and it is excellent.
This may be a new 2006 second edition, and so perhaps the publisher has just temporarily shown us the cover of the 1997 edition --- as a placeholder for the new (?) edition. I certainly recommend this book to all professional geologists. It is a scholarly treatise and written at the university level; not meant for casual readers.
Dr. Tini Niemi received her PhD degree in geology from Stanford University with a dissertation on the San Andreas Fault at Olema (near Point Reyes). Dr. Niemi is now professor of geology at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She specializes in tectonic geomorphology and seismology.

Book Description
While it is still a mystery of how a low-energy-density sound wave can concentrate enough energy in a small enough volume to cause the emission of light, research in acoustic cavitation and sonoluminescence has lead to plausible theories in which the source of light can be experimentally sustained. It has also lead to promising applications, such as ultrasound cleaning and the directed delivery of drugs through the cell walls. Sonoluminescence is a comprehensive account of the subject from its discovery in 1934 to the present day, including experimental aspects and theoretical origins. The author explains how adiabatic heating achieved when the bubble collapses determines the intensity, length, and spectral properties of the light pulse. He also describes the many experiments carried out to further explain single-bubble sonoluminescence, such as measuring the length of time light is emitted, the size and stability of bubbles when light is emitted, and the effects of adding noble gases to increase light intensity. The final chapters of Sonoluminescence give suggestions for future work and applications in fluid physics, acoustics, pipelines, ultrasonics, sonochemistry, and medicine. Through his extensive studies of acoustic cavitation, the author discusses the multiple theories that have been put forward to explain sonoluminescence, condensing selected research from over 40 years of experience into one volume to explain how light can be produced from sound.

The principles of the modern physical theory of the effect of ultrasonic and other acoustic fields on chemical reactions are presented. Special attention is given to the influence of acoustic fields on chemical reactions in nonaqueous systems, catalytic processes and reactions involving macromolecules-processes which in recent years have been the object of intensive research. The presentation of the author's new electrical theory of cavitation phenomena and sonochemical reactions and sonoluminescence initiation makes this text particularly interesting and valuable.
Sonochemistry and cavitation is rapidly increasing in importance in modern chemistry as a result of many significant achievements made in recent years. These developments, as well as the fundamental concepts, are detailed and illustrated in this current and comprehensive text.

Book Description
This collection brings together the fundamental research in shock focussing and sonoluminescence. The authors report on their studies on shock focussing and related bubble dynamics, as well as their applications in medical science. The destructive action of cavitation bubbles collapsing near boundaries is treated with special reference to kidney stones, demonstrating the capacity of bubbles for causing damage to materials. It is also shown that the shock theory of sonoluminescence plays an important part, as do converging shock and thermal waves emanating from sonoluminescing gas bubbles and upscaling single-bubble sonoluminescence. The book also addresses the current status of shock measurement technique and correlated clinical findings. The interdisciplinary approach of this book makes it relevant for medical doctors, technical researchers of lithotripsy and gas dynamicists.

A Fine Book.......2000-10-21
I'm not sure if I can say that this book is better than Leighton's "The Acoustic Bubble", but I personally have found it to be more enlightening on certain topics (of course Leighton spends some more time on aspects not covered here, so the books really do compliment each other). Although there is not a rigorous treatment of all the versions of the RP equation, the derivation of its basic form is quick and elegant, and you may begin studying complex bubble dynamics right from the start. The less than basic forms of the equation are then introduced with some background on what the new terms accomplish. The section on sonoluminescence is now somewhat dated, but much of it would still be of interest to a newcomer. This is not a textbook, ie, there are no problems to work. Basic knowledge of PDEs is required and knowledge of basic fluid dynamics preferable.

Book Description
Sonochemistry is studied primarily by chemists and sonoluminescence mainly by physicists, but a single physical phenomenon - acoustic cavitation - unites the two areas. The physics of cavitation bubble collapse, is relatively well understood by acoustical physicists but remains practically unknown to the chemists. By contrast, the chemistry that gives rise to electromagnetic emissions and the acceleration of chemical reactions is familiar to chemists, but practically unknown to acoustical physicists. It is just this knowledge gap that the present volume addresses.
The first section of the book addresses the fundamentals of cavitation, leading to a more extensive discussion of the fundamentals of cavitation bubble dynamics in section two. A section on single bubble sonoluminescence follows. The two following sections address the new scientific discipline of sonochemistry, and the volume concludes with a section giving detailed descriptions of the applications of sonochemistry.
The mixture of tutorial lectures and detailed research articles means that the book can serve as an introduction as well as a comprehensive and detailed review of these two interesting and topical subjects.
Book Description
The “Gale Encyclopedia of Science” is written at a level somewhere between the introductory sources and the highly technical texts currently available. This six-volume set covers all major areas of science and engineering, as well as mathematics and the medical and health sciences, while providing a comprehensive overview of current scientific knowledge and technology. Alphabetically arranged entries provide a user-friendly format that makes the broad scope of information easy to access and decipher. Entries typically describe scientific concepts, provide overviews of scientific areas and, in some cases, define terms.
Book Description
Walt Whitman (1819-1892) contributed to the greatest prose of American letters with Democratic Vistas, now considered a classic discussion of the theory of democracy and its possibilities. In this essay he protests the unrestrained materialism, greed, corruption and spiritual failure of what, two years later, Mark Twain would label "The Gilded Age." Whitman criticizes America for its "mighty, many-threaded wealth and industry" that mask an underlying "dry and flat Sahara" of soul. He calls for a new kind of literature to revive the American population: "Not the book needs so much to be the complete thing, but the reader of the book does."
Whitman was one of the few writers to keep the Emersonian faith in individual and cultural regeneration after the Civil War.
Customer Reviews:
Vision of an American democracy of limitless promise.......2003-02-01
Whitman proposed, optimistically, that America's shortcomings would be overcome in time: "by recognizing the worth of common people, dramatized especially in the selfless heroism of the Civil War soldiers; by cultivating both individuality and social unity; by having faith in the electoral process ..; by permitting women to develop fully in many ways; by seeing that America is steadily developing through its current practical, business-oriented phase toward a time when great 'bards' will arise, producing a true democratic literature that will instill much-needed religiosity and moral conscience into American life."

Grandfather of American Poetry shares his Utopia.......2001-06-20
I will never have the right words to express my love for Walt Whitman's writing and mind. His, "Democratic Vistas", are a phenomenal piece of literature. He explores the concepts of a true democracy. He reminds us of the values of education, love, and unity. His democracy becomes a utopia for us all.
So far as his other writings. I found his short stories very interesting. I especially liked, Death of a Schoolboy. His journal entries are very moving. In particular his mentionings of the Civil War. The history Whitman saw in his lifetime was very dence. The perspective he gives among an explosion of change and advancment is enlightening. I think it should be a requirement for living in America, to read Whitman's Vistas.
