Book Description
The Biochemistry of Cell Signalling deals in depth with the principles of cell signalling, concentrating on structure and mechanism. It will serve as a reliable map through the maze of cell signalling pathways and help the reader understand how malfunctions in these pathways can lead to disease. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 describes the machinery of signal transduction starting with the properties of signals, receptors (including receptor activation), regulators, and the molecules that link receptor and regulator. The design of signalling cascades is explained by describing central signalling pathways: the Ras-regulated MAPK and PI-3 pathways; the Rho/Rac/Cdc 42 pathway controlling chemotaxis and regulating the cytoskeleton; the G protein coupled receptor cascades in response to sensory and hormonal signals; signalling by TGF-ss in morphogenesis; cytokine signalling that controls haemopoiesis. There is also a discussion of the insulin response. As phosphorylation - dephosphorylation is involved in nearly all cellular regulatory processes, Part 1 concludes with a synopsis of its role in signalling. Part 2 describes the implementation of the signalling cascades focusing on the effect on gene transcription. After a brief description of the transcriptional machinery the regulation of transcription by cytokines and growth factors in the control of cell growth and the mechanisms and sites of control are discussed in detail. The regulators discussed include Jun/Fos, NF-AT, SREBPs, and STATs. The next two chapters cover gene regulation by nuclear receptors, including both the steroid hormone receptors and non-steroid nuclear receptors e.g. the retinoic acid receptors RAR and RXR. Part 3 studies the global cellular regulatory programs for the control of cell growth and proliferation. The first chapter concerns the regulation of the cell cycle and the role of the cyclin-dependent kinases, telomerase, Ran, and cell cycle checkpoints. The next topic is the signalling pathways in apoptosis: the TNF-receptor family death receptors, caspases, and the intracellular apoptosis signals and the role of apoptosis in the lifecycle of cells. Part 3 ends with a discussion of the signal pathways involved in the immune response, focusing on the involvement of cell-cell interactions. Part 4 considers loss of regulatory control and its consequences with respect to the molecular basis of cancer. It first describes the cellular regulatory proteins that have oncogenic potential, how they can become oncogenic and cause the transformation of normal cells to cancerous cells. Next is an analysis of the loss of developmental controls, the APC protein, ss-catenin, and the Wnt pathway, that lead to mature terminally differentiated cells reverting to immature embryonic cells. The book ends with a summary of the molecular and cellular causes of cancer and an outlook for novel therapies. Throughout the text, the emphasis is on structure and mechanism and is well illustrated with 200 figures. The Biochemistry of Cell Signalling will be an invaluable companion to all graduate students studying cell signalling.
Book Description
Signalling within and between cells is an essential part of many biological processes, from the development of the body, to the activity of our immune system. Recent advances in molecular cell biology have allowed us to identify the components of signalling pathways, and examine how they interact to form the carefully orchestrated and controlled networks on which the complexity of a living organism is built. Cell Signalling presents a carefully structured introduction to this intricate subject, introducing those conserved features which underlie many different extra-and intracellular signalling systems. Starting with an overview of cell signalling, highlighting its importance in many biological systems, the book goes on to explore the key components of extracellular and intracellular signalling mechanisms, before examining how these components come together to create the signalling pathways, which are so crucial to the survival of many living organisms. Online Resource Centre Includes figures from the book available to download to facilitate lecture preparation
Customer Reviews:
Simple and direct........2000-07-11
The book is to the point without being too light. I read this cover to cover fo a course. I found the diagrams simple and easy to follow. The text includes simple descriptions of pathways and mechanisms of cell signaling. It also included some small pieces of information that were related and made the subject matter more memorable. It is a quick read with good points.

Really Fast.......2007-10-09
The book was delivered the second day after booked on the net, and in a fair price.
Operating compatability.......2007-09-15
A well priced product and from its description ideal for lecture purposes.
Unfortunately it does not work using Windows Media Player, Nero Showtime or Open Source media player on my computer using Windows XP.
Amazon returns system worked well with full refund but I would have liked a version that worked.
review on STUDY GUIDE.......2005-10-10
after being utterly discusted with this poor excuse of a study guide, i thought i would read some horrible reviews on the guide to make me feel better. to my dismay, people can't read and they only posted reviews for the text book, which is actually good but those reviews should be posted elsewhere.
You know there is something wrong with this guide when you see them call CH3-CH3 methane (pg 3 not to mention they got linoleic and linolenic mixed up) or on the multiple choice on page 19 has ribosomes as one of the right answers for proteins involved in transcription.
i have not done a lot of the questions in the book and all ready i see errors on every second page. i wonder if i will actually recieve lower grades if i study from this poorly written book.
I love study guides and have used them for stewert's calculus, campbell's biology and bruice's organic chemistry in college. were there some occasional mistakes... yes but overall they were good. this study manual however seems to have been written by a tribe of wild monkeys pounding on a keyboard. Save your 23 dollars
Inferior in every way.......2005-08-18
The Alberts text (Molecular Biology of the Cell, Fourth Edition) is superior to this text in every way. It is clearer, more precise, and contains more information. This one manages to make simple concepts become quite difficult.
Excellent but starting to get outdated.......2005-03-06
Excellent. Hands down the best book out there for cell biology. Gives a thorough look at the exciting unraveling of the cell. Figures are exceptional. However, being now ~3 years old and due to the intense output and growth of scientific literature this book is starting to get outdated. There have been several advances in a number of transport systems (i.e. Nuclear transport and regulation of gene expression). A new edition in the next year or so would hopefully address these issues.

Book Description
This is the first comprehensive and detailed textbook to focus on signal transduction. Covering a wide variety of mechanisms in an unusually well-balanced manner, Noel Morgan illustrates both the diversity and uniformity that exist between different types of cell signaling systems, provides detailed analyses of a large number of processes, and shows how different systems are integrated within the cell to generate a coordinated response to extracellular messages. He also demonstrates the fundamental role of transduction processes in the regulation of cell growth, metabolic activity, secretion, and other aspects of cell activation.
Ideal as a primary text for senior undergraduate and graduate courses in neurosciences and cell signalling, the work can also supplement basic courses in cell biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and endocrinology. Because CELL SIGNALLING analyzes the experimental literature to show how our present understanding of transduction mechanisms developed, researchers unfamiliar with this line of investigation will also find the book of value.

Book Description
This well-established series was successfully re-launched by Portland Press in 1991 with a new format and a new direction, returning Essays to its original concept of a book for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and their teachers. Essays in Biochemistry provides undergraduates and first year postgraduates with a single source of information on the latest research in rapidly moving areas of biochemistry and molecular biology. Particular attention is given to topics which perhaps because of recent developments are poorly covered by standard texts. Each chapter is written by an expert on the area of research and is a self-contained summary of the state-of-the-art of that topic. Essays in Biochemistry is published in a new format which makes extensive use of illustrations, diagrams and tables, which enhances its accessibility. This highly readable volume will also serve as a valuable teaching aid to lecturers in biochemistry and molecular biology.

Book Description
Cell signalling lies at the heart of many biological processes and currently is the focus of intense research interest. In multicellular organisms, it is central to how different types of cell communicate with each other and how they detect and respond to extracellular signals. Intercellular communication is vital to single-celled organisms as well, allowing them to respond to environmental cues and signals.
To date, much of the understanding of signalling mechanisms has come from research on specific cell types (eg mouse lymphocyte and cardiomyocyte) or on organisms in which communication systems such as nervous and endocrine systems are well established. This volume therefore aims to 'fill the gap' by concentrating on 'simple organisms' where the elements of those signalling systems first evolved. Many of the groups covered contain important pathogens or parasites, and the potential for manipulating signalling pathways for therapeutic intervention will be highlighted.
Book Description
This is an invaluable textbook, prepared by the Open University team and designed so that it can be read on its own or as part of the OU course. This second edition has been fully revised and updated including new colour illustrations increasing the striking spread of full colour diagrams throughout the book. The clarity of the text has been improved, providing comprehensive coverage of the evolution of ocean basins and their structure in a clear, concise manner aimed specifically at the student market.
In this second edition the technological advances in fields as diverse as:
- deep-towed instruments for `sniffing' hydrothermal plumes
- mapping the sea-floor by sophisticated sonar techniques
- three-dimensional imaging of crustal structure by seismic tomography
- the use of satellites for navigation, and for making precise measurements of the height of the sea-surface
The first chapters describe the processes that shape the ocean basins, determine the structure and composition of oceanic crust and control the major features of continental margins. How the 'hot springs' of the oceanic ridges cycle chemical elements between seawater and oceanic crust is then explored. Sediment distributions are examined next, to demonstrate how sediments can preserve a record of past climatic and sea-level changes. Finally, the role of the oceans as an integral part of global chemical changes is reviewed.
High quality full colour diagrams
Substantial chapter summaries ideal for revision

Symmetry and the Beautiful Universe
ASIN: 0198536887 |
Book Description
In fifty-four colour plates, Symmetry in Chaos illustrates the many varied and beautiful pictures that may be produced when the seemingly contradictory ideas of symmetry and chaos are combined. The mathematical ideas behind these pictures are presented in an elementary fashion, and computer programs are provided in appendices. These programs allow the reader to generate on a home computer black and white versions of the many and varied patterns shown throughout this book. The authors had two reasons for writing this book: to present the surprisingly beautiful and intricate pictures that are produced by combining symmetry and chaos, and to present in as elementary a way as possible the mathematical ideas that lead to these pictures.
Customer Reviews:
Fresh approach!.......2001-09-10
How is this book different from all the other fractal/chaos books on the market? Because of the emphasis on symmetry! Most fractal/chaos books are similar in the sense that they contain the same pictures. But even if you are fed up with Mandelbrot sets, you can safely open this book. You will love the fractal wallpapers.
The book is written by mathematicians, too, so it's factually correct, and has some real insight.
Just read it!
Symmetry: a powerful concept.......2000-07-09
This looks like another book of cool fractal pictures, but it's much more than that. The concept of symmetry is subtle and useful in the hard sciences as well as in literature and philosophy. This book provides a solid mathematical treatment of it, with excellent graphical examples. This book is great fun for math nerds, but can also entertain a more general audience that has some interest in fractals or in visualizing mathematical concepts.
A visually delightful book!.......1996-05-23
Not only is this book filled
with eye-catching colorful pictures, it also does a
wonderful job of explaining how they were generated.
They also draw many interesting parallels between
the computer-generated pictures and the structures
that occur in nature or are man-made. Check out their
Symmetric Chaos site at

Book Description
A Reference Grammar of Dutch is aimed at English-speaking students of Dutch at beginner/intermediate level. It is designed to be practical and user-friendly: it is arranged alphabetically to allow for quick and easy access and linguistic terminology is kept to a minimum, with a glossary provided. Examples are taken from modern, everyday Dutch, and numerous charts and tables help the student focus on the main points. Each entry is linked to a set of exercises, and a key to the exercises and a comprehensive index are provided.
Customer Reviews:
Modern Dutch Grammar.......2000-05-24
I would recommend this grammar to anyone who has some background knowledge of Dutch and who needs an easy-to-use reference work. The grammar is clearly explained, the exercises are adequate. All examples are provided with English translations, and the book distinguishes between beginning and intermediate learners of Dutch. As a result, it tells the reader what is essential and what is more sophisticated knowledge. The book tries to be "user-friendly:" This means that grammatical terminology has been kept to a minimum. The only part that I did not like about this book is that the topics are arranged alphabetically. So, if you are interested in, say, the present tense formation of Dutch, you look it up under "present tense", the past tense is located under "past," etc. Such an organizing principle does not give a clear overview of the verbal system in Dutch. The same can be said about pronouns, adjectives, etc. This organization of topics also defeats the need for an index at the end of the book. But, in spite of this shortcoming, this is a good tool for intermediate learners of Dutch.
