Book Description
This book surveys the current knowledge concerning the expression and function of small stress proteins (sHsps) in different organisms, ranging from prokaryotes to humans. It provides an overview of the diversity and complex evolutionary history of sHsps and describes their function and expression in different eukaryote models. Additional chapters discuss the involvement of sHsps in pathological conditions and gene therapy approaches towards a control of sHsp expression levels.
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology, Part C, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
This study identifies stress proteins and antioxidant enzymes that may play a role in the survival strategies of the Florida red tide dinoflagellate, Karenia brevis. Heat shock protein 60 (Hsp 60), mitochondrial small heat shock protein (mitosHsp), chloroplastic small heat shock protein (chlsHsp), Mn superoxide dismutase (SOD), and Fe SOD were first identified by Western blotting. The induction of these proteins in laboratory cultures in response to elevated temperatures, hydrogen peroxide, lead, or elevated light intensities was next assessed. In parallel, F"V/F"M, a measurement of photosynthetic efficiency and common proxy of cellular stress, was determined. Hsp 60, Fe SOD, and Mn SOD were induced following exposure to elevated temperatures, hydrogen peroxide, or lead. MitosHsp responded only to heat, whereas chlsHsp responded only to H"2O"2-induced stress. The expression of stress proteins and antioxidant enzymes appears to be a more sensitive indicator of heat or chemically induced stresses than F"V/F"M. However, F"V/F"M decreased significantly in response to elevated light intensities that did not induce the expression of stress proteins. These results identify for the first time stress proteins and antioxidant enzymes in K. brevis, provide evidence for differential sensitivity of cellular organelles to various sources of stress, and confirm the presence of conserved stress responses observed across phyla in a dinoflagellate.

Customer Reviews:
Convection Heat Transfer.......2006-12-29
This is an excellent book. I have benefited a lot from this exceptional book for years. I have been using this book as a textbook in my Convective Heat Transfer course which I am offering constantly every year.
It is a well written and designed book stimulating creative thinking. I strongly recommend this book.
Bejan's CHT.......2006-11-10
Bejan's CHT book gives an innovative exposure to convective heat transfer. The Scaling analysis, which is explored throughout the text, unquestionably sets this book apart from its competitors. On top of that, the book also brings the latest developments in Constructal theory. I strongly recommend this book to grad and undergrad students interested in convective heat transfer.
Convection heat transfer made "streamlined".......2006-10-31
With this book, Bejan makes convection heat transfer "streamlined". Powerful --yet simple and handy-- tools such as constructal theory, scale analysis, intersection of asymptotes method, heatlines, etc., are presented and used in the book to provide readers with a deep understanding of how and why things are happening the way they are. The author's viewpoint on the field is refreshing and original. This is the one book that I would recommend to graduate students interested in convection heat transfer.
About "Convection Heat Transfer" by A. Bejan.......2006-10-25
A.Bejan gave to the field of thermal sciences a new breath. His particular touch and way of thinking leads to unexplored scientific and technical territories. Due to its original spirit for thermal sciences and, more generally, for physics, the book, «Convection Heat Transfer », presents the essential keys of the field for the engineering students but also for researchers. I usually recommend this elegant book to my students.
Runaway very fast if your professor is using this!.......2003-04-24
I am a grad student in ME specializing in thermal engineering, I've taken undergrad heat transfer and I have strong graduate level math and fluids background. Now that you know some of my credentials, let me say I HATE THIS BOOK! It skips steps and explanations! I am leaving this review to warn anyone who is learning this subject to runaway very fast from this book, you won't learn anything and you'll suffer... There are many better convective heat transfer books out there. The only good thing about this book is the numerous references to other books.
On a last note: If you're learing this subject don't believe the reviewers that gave this book five stars, they must be paying off a debt to Bejan or have 30+ years experience in convective heat transfer!

Dynamics of Fluids in Porous Media (Dover Books on Physics and Chemistry)
ASIN: 0387290966 |
Book Description
This book provides a user-friendly introduction to convection in porous media, such as fibrous insulation, geological strata, and catalytic reactors. The presentation is self-contained, requiring only routine classical mathematics and the basic elements of fluid mechanics and heat transfer. It will thus be of use not only to researchers and practicing engineers as a review and reference, but also to graduate students and others just entering the field. The Third Edition includes nearly 1000 new references and covers: convection in deforming porous media, "designed" porous media, the theory of deformable media, modeling viscous dissipation in hyperporous media, and more.
Customer Reviews:

This book provide a good review of literatura, and a discussion about main concepts of porous media.
Great.......2007-03-27
Nield has the best understanding of porous media analysis. He is a prolofic writer and contributor to the field and is most qualified to write this comprehensive text.
Outstanding book - reviewed by Prof. P. Vadasz.......2007-01-09
This is the best reference book available on Convection in Porous Media. It features the wide variety of topics that are encountered in this filed. The basic phenomena are well described and good references to state of the art research are being cited. A very easy to follow text and derivations make the reading a pleasure, but the book serves mainly as an excellent reference. Anyone who works in fluid mechanics and heat transfer in porous media should have a copy of this book.

Book Description
Optical Spectroscopy of Semiconductor Nanostructures extends the field of solid-state spectroscopy into the domain of semiconductor nanophysics. It reviews new trends and notable progress attained recently in various optical studies of semiconductor low-dimensional systems. The one- and zero-dimensional structures, quantum wires and quantum dots, are treated on equal footing, alongside of superlattices and two-dimensional systems, heterojunctions and quantum wells. Both phenomenological and the microscopical descriptions of the physical phenomena are performed with an emphasis on the symmetry analysis and the method of invariants. Subject treated are, for example, · Quantum confinement in low-dimensional systems · Exciton polaritons in nanostructures and microcavities · Resonant electro-and magneto-optics · Intersubband optical spectroscopy · Photoluminescence of low-dimensional systems · Optical spin orientation and spin-relaxation mechanisms · Fine structure of excitonic levels · Light scattering in nanostructures · Nonlinear optical phenomena · Circular photogalvanic and spin-galvanic effects

Book Description
In recent years the field of semiconductor optics has been pushed to several extremes. The size of semiconductor structures has shrunk to dimensions of a few nanometers, the semiconductor-light interaction is studied on timescales as fast as a few femtoseconds, and transport properties on a length scale far below the wavelength of light have been revealed. These advances were driven by rapid improvements in both semiconductor and optical technologies and were further facilitated by progress in the theoretical description of optical excitations in semiconductors. This book, written by leading experts in the field, provides an up-to-date introduction to the optics of semiconductors and their nanostructures so as to help the reader understand these exciting new developments. It also discusses recently established applications, such as blue-light emitters, as well as the quest for future applications in areas such as spintronics, quantum information processing, and third-generation solar cells.

Book Description
When Scarlett O'Hara fluttered her dark lashes, did she threaten only the gentlemen in her parlor or the very culture that produced her? Examining the "bad belle" as a recurring character, THE BELLE GONE BAD finds that white southern women writers from the antebellum period to the present have used treacherous belles to subtly indict their culture from within. Combining the southern ideal of ladyhood with the sexual power of the dark seductress, the bad belle is the perfect figure with which to critique a culture that effectively enslaved both its white and black women.
Betina Entzminger traces the development of the bad belle from nineteenth-century domestic novelist E.D.E.N. Southworth to contemporary novelist Kaye Gibbons. Coy and alluring like the traditional southern belle, the bad belle is also manipulative and knowing. By making the patriarch vulnerable to women who outwardly conform to the limiting conventions of womanhood but inwardly break all the rules, these writers challenged a society that stereotyped black women as promiscuous and forced white women onto pedestals while committing heinous acts in their name.
THE BELLE GONE BAD shows that even writers who have been critically dismissed as too domestic or conservative to be innovative did challenge southern institutions and conceptions about race, class, and gender. What united the dangerous belles created by several generations of women writing in the South, old and new, is their liberating potential.
