Book Description
The field of genomics has seen dramatic expansion in the years following the publication of the prokaryotic genome. Must of the present effort in genomics lies in sequence production, annotation, and other bioinformatic analyses and in the beginnings of genetic and biochemical characterization of ORFs.
Organization of the Prokaryotic Genome contributes to the field by examining the importance of the gene organization in the genome and its role in the shaping of life. Intended to review and direct progress in our understanding of genome organization, this book explores the way in which genes interact with their neighbors.
Organized hierarchically, it addresses four major areas: description, forces that shape the genome, the genome's influence on gene expression, and future directions. Chapters within each section address more focused topics and guide the reader toward a broader perspective of viewing the genome as an integrated system.

Book Description
Lindenmayer Systems are a mathematical formalism which was proposed by Aristid Lindenmayer in 1968 as a foundation for an axiomatic theory of development. This book presents the application of Lindenmayer Systems and Fractal Geometry to graphics-based plant modelling, a fascinating approach to visualizing growth functions in plants. For life scientists, mathematicians and computer scientists alike, this book will provide a unique and stimulating view at an interdisciplinary field of science.

Lecture Notes in Biomathematics??.......2000-09-19
Well this gem of a book is hidden away in the biology section of my local library. Not the easiest of places for somebody interested in computer graphics to find.
This book is a great place to start if your looking for an introduction to 2D and 3D plant/organism structural modelling using computer graphics, such as modelling plant and leaf structures as well as bacteria and the like. It discusses the various types of Lindenmayer Systems and has some program code in the appendix, though the code is of poor quality.
Most of the information contained in this book is also available in "The Algorithmic Beauty of Plants (The Virtual Laboratory) by Przemyslaw Prusinkiewicz, Aristid Lindenmayer". Which covers much more, such as plant organs, such as fruit and flowers.

Book Description
This volume delineates the use of fractal patterns and measures of fractal dimensions in describing and understanding general aspects of biology, particularly human physiology. After describing the ubiquitous nature of fractal phenomena, the authors give examples of the properties of fractals in space and time. Proceeding from mathematical definitions, they develop detailed practical methods for assessing the fractal characteristics of wave forms varying with time, tissue density variation, and surface irregularities. Most importantly, the authors show how fractal variation defines internal spatial or temporal correlations within the fractal system or object. Simple, recursively applied rules can give rise to complex biological structures by a variety of methods. This suggests that genetic rules govern the general structuring of an organism, while rules implied by interactions at the biochemical, cellular, and tissue levels govern ontogenic development and therefore play the major role in the growth of an organism. Chaos, or non-linear dynamics, is introduced as a stimulating way to examine biological behavior at the cellular and whole animal levels, even though proof of the chaotic nature of normal physiologic events is as yet meager. The later chapters give sets of examples of structural and behavioral fractal phenomena in nerve and muscle, in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems and in growth processes. Why molecular interactions and complex systems give rise to fractals is explored and related to the ideas of emergent properties of systems operating at high levels of complexity.

Book Description
In this introductory text, Dr. Birdi demonstrates experimental methods and analyses of fractal dimensions in natural processes. In addition to a general overview, he discusses in detail problems in the fields of chemistry, geochemistry, and biophysics. Both students and professionals with a minimum of mathematics or physical science training will learn to find and model shapes and patterns from their own everyday observations.
Customer Reviews:
A breakthrough in the use of fractals !.......1999-04-12
After having read this book I have changed my mind regarding fractals. I have always thought of fractals as a "smart" way of making maths popular. But Professor Birdi's book really links maths, Chemistry an Physics together in an new way. If you are a student, or if you work with related subjects you will benefit from the visionary point of view in the book.

Book Description
This book discusses the application of the concepts of fractals and chaos to biomedical phenomena. In particular, it argues against the outdated notion of homeostasis; using biomedical data sets and modern mathematical concepts, the author attempts to convince the reader that life is at least a homeodynamic process with multiple states - each being capable of survival. Although relying heavily on the new mathematical ideas, the author has attempted to make the book self-contained. The mathematics is developed in a biological context and mathematical formulation for its own sake is avoided. In this book, the phenomena to be explained motivate the mathematical development rather than the other way round.
Customer Reviews:
important history in a lace stocking.......2005-03-18
While renovating an old house, a person found a lace stocking filled with love letters from a woman to a man. Also enclosed is a photo of a black woman. Instead of being correspondence between two blacks, it turns out that these letters were written by an Irish-American woman to her black male lover.
History buffs and amateur genealogists should love this book. Outside of the interracial context, this book answers how do you find more information when you come upon a historical artifact. The answer is to look at old census documents, old maps, old magazines. Also, let people know what you found and see if someone may know helpful third parties. Just as modern techniques show that we leave our DNA everywhere, for approximately 150 years or so, Americans have left photographs and writings everywhere. Your reality can be found, even a century after the fact.
The editor of this book said that the contributors knew this book must be a collaboration from the start. I actually think a historian with a background in women's history, African-American history, and local Massachusetts history could have written this book all by her- or himself.
The extant letters were written by Alice to Channing; there is no existing two-way correspondence here. However, the book stated that when relationships fell apart, women often asked their paramours for their letters back. So while I thought that Channing may have kept these letters, it was actually Alice who did so. In that same vein, the book uncovers much more about Alice than Channing. In fact, it stands out that the chapter devoted to her is deep whereas the one devoted to him is scant. Still, you gotta work with whatcha got.
This book is inspiring in that it proves such relationships did exist before Loving v. Virginia. However, that is where the inspiration ends. This relationship was riddled with abuse, jealousy, "gold digging," and misogyny. Just as Frederick Douglass wed a different white woman than the one to whom he wrote love letters, Channing never divorced his white wife to marry Alice. Patricia Hill Collins has soundly condemned the idea that this pairing is Root's "love's revolution." That stands out here. In fact, modern census figures show that couples co-habit interracially much more than they wed interracially.
While this book does mention Smith College at several points, it never brings up that Northampton is now nicknamed "Lesbianville, USA" by its own residents. Greenwich Village was known for its tolerance toward interracial couples and gay couples. The authors here never state whether Northampton residents of that era would have been equally open-minded.
This book does leave some questions unanswered. Alice was 32 when she wrote to Channing and 40 when she married another man. Did she pursue Channing because she didn't want to be an "old maid"? Channing was obviously literate, but the authors never suggest how he learned to read. They mention several times that the Civil War was a close memory for all involved. During the slavery era, it was illegal to teach blacks to read. This book never answers how Channing became one of the exceptions.
Critics have complained that books don't bring up issues of race, class, gender, and sexuality enough. Well, this book juggles all of those balls. In fact, this book spells out ways that the interracial component of this duo may have been the smallest worry of the couple's concerns. Alice never brings up race in her letters, but the authors suggest that clearly race was a salient issue at this time. I am pleased that I found this book.
