                        Book Description

An important contributor to our current understanding of critical phenomena, Ma introduces the beginner-especially the graduate student with no previous knowledge of the subject-to fundamental theoretical concepts such as mean field theory, the scaling hypothesis, and the renormalization group. He then goes on to apply the renormalization group to selected problems, with emphasis on the underlying physics and the basic assumptions involved.

Read and cited by scientists worldwide, Advanced Book Classics are works that continue to inform today's groundbreaking research efforts. Redesigned and newly released in paperback, these graduate-level texts and monographs are now available to an even wider audience. Written by the most influential physicists of the twentieth century, these Advanced Book Classics promise to enrich and inspire a new generation of physicists.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Introduction to an Interesting Field.......2005-07-05

This is a great introduction to the modern theory of phase transitions. The typesetting, while dated, is not much of a distraction, and the text is remarkably clear and written for the autodidact in all of us. It starts out by describing the macroscopic theory of phase transitions created by Lev Landau, and draws what conclusions it can from the theory. It then analyzes the flaws in the theory, and makes a very good intuitive and mathematical arguement for the existence of the renormalization group, and starts drawing results from it. If you're interested in phase transitions and critical phenomena, this book is a must-have.

2 out of 5 stars Very poor typsetting.......2003-12-22

I was very disappointed on receiving this book because of its poor quality typesetting. It uses a very old-technology typesetting program which is mostly courier with integral and summmation symbols added. The typesetting reminded me of the old Chi-writer version from graduate school days. It just turned me off. It would be easy enough for the author to rewrite the book with Latex which would improve it considerably. It may seem to be a shallow reason, but one gets use to seeing pleasing typesetting which facilitates reading. I would not have ordered this book if I was able to view some inside pages.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to RG and critical phenomena.......2000-04-22

This is a very pedagogical introduction to critical phenomena, and the techniques to study it. In particular, Ma really explains the conceptual aspects of the renormalization group, and provides enough steps in the calculations of some standard theories that you can fill in the lines. This book has really been my first exposure to this topic, and I am definately applying it in my graduate studies!

                          Book Description

The relationship between liquids and gases engaged the attention of a number of distinguished scientists in the mid 19th Century. In a definitive paper published in 1869, Thomas Andrews described experiments he performed on carbon dioxide and from which he concluded that a critical temperature exists below which liquids and gases are distinct phases of matter, but above which they merge into a single fluid phase. During the years which followed, other natural phenomena were discovered to which the same critical point description can be applied - such as ferromagnetism and solutions. This book provides an historical account of theoretical explanations of critical phenomena which ultimately led to a major triumph of statistical mechanics in the 20th Century - with the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics

                                Description:
Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics are related to one another through the so-called ''thermodynamic limit'' in which, roughly speaking the number of particles becomes infinite. At critical points (places of physical discontinuity) this limit fails to be regular. As a result, the ''reduction'' of Thermodynamics to Statistical Mechanics fails to hold at such critical phases. This fact is key to understanding an argument due to Craig Callender to the effect that the thermodynamic limit leads to mistakes in Statistical Mechanics. I discuss this argument and argue that the conclusion is misguided. In addition, I discuss an analogous example where a genuine physical discontinuity-the breaking of drops-requires the use of infinite idealizations.

                                  Book Description

Confused and uncertain about life, death, sex, and music, in about that order, Rudy comes of age the summer before his final high school year in Galt, a town as dust-bowl depressed as its 1,800 citizens. Church pulpits on Sundays preach hope and eternal rewards to impatient youths and resigned elders who, during the rest of the week, engage their secular natures in Hollywood’s escapist movies and express sinful instincts at dances and intermissions. To support himself and his widowed mother, Rudy works for those forces of escapism and sin by playing nights in a pickup dance band and janitoring days for the town’s movie theater.

He wants to play the sax better, make out with girls, avoid fights at home, and not have so many of his friends leave Galt or die. Thieves murder his Indian friend, Jack, for a silver belt buckle. An after-dance car wreck kills classmate Elgin. Illness wastes cousin Lana, the object of his school-boy crush. Rudy’s mother leaves town to re-marry. His passionate partner in crying room trysts moves away.

In autumn 1940 Rudy reflects on his self-absorbed, poignant personal life and realizes that all the sad departures and dying were just the beginning as he and Galt awaken to an impending world war.

5 out of 5 stars delightful story of a small town boy in the midwest.......2003-09-26

I highly recommend this book. The author is very gifted at getting and keeping your attention. His description of a drought stricken small town and its inhabitants is right on. Your heart will be with Rudy through all his adventures. The O. Henry ending will surprise you.

5 out of 5 stars The Crying Room is a Completely Engaging Book.......2001-06-24

I expected to enjoy reading The Crying Room, but I did not anticipate I would enjoy it so completely. This is an engaging, well-written book that examines "coming of age" with introspection and understanding. The writing is honest and the characterizations (fictional and historic) "work" to provide the reader with a fascinating view of small towns and late adolescence in the 1940's.

The concept of "the crying room" (the local movie theater's locked and private space for mothers to take noisy babies during films) was used provocatively by the author. The layered meaning behind the "crying room" added another dimension to this already excellent book. I did not want this story to end. A good read.

5 out of 5 stars The Crying Room - delightful, poignant, thoughtful.......2001-06-05

The teenagers who grew up to become Tom Brokaw's "Greatest Generation" come to life in this book through the teen-age Rudy trying to get along in a fictional dusty small town in the Dakotas. The author tells a poignant story of the joys and heartbreaks of Rudy's loves and losses, as he plays his saxophone in a dance band one summer and dreams of how much better things will be in 1941 once this year is over.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful coming of age story.......2001-03-19

Life in a dust-bowl pre-Depression era comes across dramatically in Rudy's story like you were there to join the town's grief when a car wreck kills his best friend, when his favorite cousin dies of "the consumption" and as Rudy grimly copes with his selfish widowed mother. You share his unashamed pleasure in making music with an undistinguished seven-piece band in dance halls so predictably familiar on hundreds of middle America's unpaved main streets. A memorable story of a kid born into impressively hard times and how he survives.

When the small church in my hometown announced they would be building a “crying room”, I had never heard of such a thing. As it turns out, a crying room is a room off the main church where crying children can be taken so that they don't disturb the other churchgoers, but the name was so evocative that it inspired me to write about one with a more sinister purpose.
