    Book Description

This is an ideal textbook for both advanced undergraduates and graduate students. It contains valuable coverage of the optical properties of minerals, as well as up-to-date descriptions of common rock-forming minerals. The chapters on optical theory include discussions of the nature and properties of light, the petrographic microscope, and the behavior of light in isotropic materials and in uniaxial and biaxial anisotropic materials. Thoroughly revised to include recent developments in the field, the book includes step-by-step procedures to guide students through the determination of all optical properties by which minerals are routinely identified with a petrographic microscope. Readers will find descriptive information on over 125 common rock forming minerals, and many photomicrographs and illustrations. The book also includes a flow sheet to guide students through the process of identifying an unknown mineral.

Another fine, informative book that is truly helpful in gemology, as well as the intended geology studies.
    Well worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars The Handy Dandy Guide.......2002-04-11

This is a definate must have for all you Geologists out there. No matter what year of school you are in or even if you are no longer in school, but need a bit of reference now and again, this is the book to have. Nesse does an excellent job of clearly explaining and illustrating the optical properties of minerals. He includes all of the essential bits of information that any geologist will need. I highly recommend this book as a great reference tool that any geologist or aspiring geologist should add to their collection of references.

    5 out of 5 stars A student's view.......2000-02-06

As a student of Geology, I have used Nesse as my bible for all petrology courses. It is complete, comprehensive and easy to use. A must for all geologists, student or not.

    5 out of 5 stars Great book.......1999-12-04

Finally we have a mineralogy text book that will compete with Klein and Hurlbuts's Manual of Mineralogy. The line drawings are outstanding. I am using this text book the next time I teach mineralogy.

5 out of 5 stars Good undergrad college textbook for optical mineralogy........1997-11-17

Remarkably lucid yet accurate presentation of a subject often found difficult by students.

The first third of the text deals with the properties of light, the use and care of the petrographic microscope, and the optical properties of minerals and how to use these to identify mineral grains in thin sections.

Much of the text contains detailed descriptions of the commoner rock-forming minerals from the standpoint of the petrographer. Descriptive diagrams and photographs, and capitalized section headings, separated paragraphs, and all typeface (font) easy to read. Paper is quality glossy and easy to use.

Appendices include Identification Tables based upon various optical properties, tables which have proved their use to students taking the course. Also includes the standard fold-up Interference Color Chart, on quality glossy paper, and on its reverse a table of birefringence versus relief (difference in refractive index).

The author retains consideration for students, including photos of such non-minerals as may confuse the tyro, such as textile fibers, bubbles, and grinding compound, all of which get into thin sections (petrographic slides).

Excellently laid out and organized, it also contains a good Index. This text was written for college students taking petrography and optical mineralogy, and has been kept, rather than sold, even by some students who never expect to use a petrographic microscope again. College instructors take notice, as for a junior to senior level petrography course this text probably rates a 9 or a 10. [DMM]

    Book Description

Introduction to Mineralogy consolidates much of the material now covered in traditional mineralogy and optical mineralogy courses and focuses on describing minerals within their geologic context. It presents the important traditional content of mineralogy including crystallography, chemical bonding, controls on mineral structure, mineral stability, and crystal growth to provide a foundation that enables students to understand the nature and occurrence of minerals. Physical, optical, and X-ray powder diffraction techniques of mineral study are described in detail, and common chemical analytical methods are outlined as well. Detailed descriptions of over 100 common minerals are provided, and the geologic context within which these minerals occur is emphasized. Appendices provide tables and diagrams to help students with mineral identification, using both physical and optical properties. Numerous line drawings, photographs, and photomicrographs help make complex concepts understandable. Introduction to Mineralogy not only provides specific knowledge about minerals but also helps students develop the intellectual tools essential for a solid, scientific education. This comprehensive text is useful for undergraduate students in a wide range of mineralogy courses.

    Book Description

Atlas of rock-forming minerals in thin section This full-colour handbook illustrates the appearance of common rock-forming minerals as seen in thin section under the polarizing microscope. It is not intended to replace a mineralogy textbook — rather it is designed to be used as a laboratory manual alongside the standard texts, by all students of earth sciences from sixth form to honours degree level. The book contains over 200 photomicrographs accompanied by short descriptions and summaries of the optical properties of the various minerals. The photographs are taken in either plane-polarized light or under crossed polars, and are carefully chosen to show the features by which the minerals can most easily be recognised.

I am Earth Sciences student too. This book is really great for petrology. As I am 1st year student and don't know mineral well so this book give me a guide to classify those minerals.

4 out of 5 stars Superb color photographs.......1999-04-23

I have taken a course in Optical Mineralogy and Petrography, and although the text used was Nesse, I believe that this Atlas was adjunct to the course. Although I do not have a petrographic microscope, I recently saw this title in a used book shop near a college town, and could not resist buying it (for about $6 I think). What a bargain. However, such an occurrence is rare indeed.

Hi, I'm a Chinese and living in Hong Kong. I studied in Earth Sciences for the second year. To me, this book safe me from the lost world in petrology. The colourful, sharp photos in the book illustrated what you'll see under microscope and greatly raise my interest. And, clear notes about the minerals or rocks you looking at have been given. They can give reader both visual and wordful memories. Some other books of this author are also good. They kept the good quality in expressing the information. This book especially good for starter in petrology.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent book.......2005-10-03

The book is written in a consise and well laid out manner. As the previous writer stated, the colour photos are priceless and are exactly as you would see looking through a petrological microscope both in crossed polars and thin section

4 out of 5 stars Covers polarised and cross-polars nicely.......2004-05-20

I believe this book is ideal for a second year University student to learn to identify rocks and common forming minerals under the microscope.
Regardless of earlier critics, this book is only intended as a help to identify common minerals and nothing else. I personally found it very useful, the colour images are worth more than a thousand printed words.

    1 out of 5 stars Avoid confusion!.......2003-12-31

I agree with the reviewer from Fairbanks: this book should not be confused with the Mackenzie and Guilford atlas. The Atlas of *Rocks* and Minerals tries to be too comprehensive (by including both rocks and minerals) and in doing so has lost all of the information about less common and accessory minerals that was in the Mackenzie and Guilford text. Of course, much of what's in both books is now available on the Web, but it's still hard to find large format color photos like the ones in Mackenzie and Guilford.

Another (less expensive) alternative is A.R. Philpotts' "Petrography of Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks." In my experience as a student and then a TA in a mineralogy course, Philpotts' book does a better job of pointing out the distinctive characteristics of minerals than do the photographic atlases.

1 out of 5 stars MacKenzie produced a better text with C. Guilford.......2002-05-03

This book is overpriced and almost useless. It only serves as eye candy for someone with exposure to the petrographic microscope. Outside of pictures it contains terse explanations and alot of blank wasted space.

      Book Description

More than half of the world's petroleum is found in carbonate rocks — for example, in the Middle East, the former USSR and in North America. These rocks show a bewildering diversity of grains and textures, due in part to the wealth of different fossil organisms that have contributed to carbonate sedimentation, and in part to a wide variety of diagenetic processes that can radically modify textures and obscure the depositional fabric. Careful petrographic study with a polarising microscope is a key element of any study of carbonate sediments — as a companion to field or core logging and as a necessary precursor to geochemical analysis. This atlas, which illustrates in full color a range of features not attempted in any general textbook, is designed as a laboratory manual to keep beside the microscope, and as an aid to identifying grain types and textures in carbonates. It will appeal alike to under-graduate and graduate students and to professionals in teaching institutions, research laboratories and industry. This CD is an atlas of images of minerals as seen in thin section using a polarizing microscope. Minerals are listed according to structure and composition using a sequence following the Dana system. There is also an alphabetical index. From either of these lists, the user can access any page in the atlas by clicking on the mineral or topic name. The first section deals with seven fundamental optical properties, followed by sixty-five minerals and images of alteration textures. Each page includes the mineral name, chemical formula, two to four images, and explanatory text. All images can be enlarged to near-screen size. An Atlas of Minerals in Thin Section is an ideal supplement for undergraduate laboratory courses in optical mineralogy, petrology, and earth materials.
