Book Description
This engaging introduction to the human prehistoric past presents the chronicle of human physical and cultural evolution. Rather than an encyclopedic, all-inclusive survey of the human evolutionary story, this text presents human prehistory within a framework of themes, issues, and debates.
Customer Reviews:
Strong on Fossil Forms, Weak on Latter-Day Cultures.......2006-01-19
I have used this book for about three years in my archaeology class, discontinuously I must admit. It's good for those who want a strong biological perspective in humankind's cultural evolution, but it comes up short when it comes to regional civilizations. Treatment of the state-level societies in each region (e.g., Mesopotamia, Egypt, China, Mesoamerica, Andean America) could be more detailed, and the book would be easier to follow if it used a sequence of culture model for each region from its Neolithic to florescence to decline. In treating fossil hominids and their material culture, from the earliest human and humanlike forms through the Lower Paleolithic to the Mesolithic traditions and their makers, however, this is a solid presentation.
Putting more than the past into perspective.......2000-03-31
Kenneth Fader's "The Past In Perspective" is a book designed for those who wish to learn the basics regarding the field of archaelology. Focusing on the cultural evolutions of mankind, Fader never lapses into the jargon so popularly found in some textbooks. This is a book designed to introduce over five million years of human evolution, so naturally it is best for those who are new to the topic. Although I used this book for my archeology class, it contains information that could interest anyone with a flair for history. All in all, it is easy of to follow and does its best to represent all sides of arguments that are presented, although at times it seems to stress a war between religous and evolutionary ideas that may, or may not exist as much as the author would like them to.

A very good book if you read it through..........2003-06-23
This book by Paul Shewmon is very good and thorough. However, it is frustrating to use if you just want to read certain sections and pick up small parts here and there. There seemed to always be some variables which were defined elsewhere in the book and never mentioned again!
A good one for both students and researchers.......2003-01-22
The first chapter deals with the basic equations of diffusion; the second chapter widely describes the atomic theory of diffusion before, in the subsequent chapters, focusing on diffusion in dilute alloys, in a concentration gradient, in non-metals. The 6th chapter is really interesting as it focuses on the effect of dislocations, grain boundaries and free surfaces on diffusion and even including, in the last chapter, diffusion mechanisms under electric current or heat flux.
All the chapters are independent of one another.
In almost all chapters the author describes both theory and experimental measurements (including some results) and then discusses the results with some left open questions.
A set of problems is included at the end of each chapter with the answers for many of them.

Book Description
Fractal structures are found everywhere in nature, and as a consequence anomalous diffusion has far reaching implications in a host of phenomena. This book describes diffusion and transport in disordered media such as fractals, porous rocks and random resistor networks. Part I contains material of general interest to statistical physics: fractals, percolation theory, regular random walks and diffusion, continuous time random walks and Levy walks, and flights. Part II covers anomalous diffusion in fractals and disordered media, while Part III serves as an introduction to the kinetics of diffusion-limited reactions. Part IV discusses the problem of diffusion-limited coalescence in one dimension. This book will be of particular interest to researchers requiring a clear introduction to the field. It will also be a valuable source to graduate students studying in areas of physics, chemistry, and engineering.
Customer Reviews:
A fantastic introduction to the field..........2001-06-22
I am a graduate student in statistical physics with a primary interest in diffusion-limited reactions. I have found the above book to be invaluable, so much so that I'm disappointed that I didn't know about it earlier, as I'm sure it would have accelerated my understanding. It is, in my opinion, the best introduction to the field of diffusion-limited reactions that I'm aware of and certainly makes the research literature in this area much more accessible. I have also found the other sections of the book to be particularly illuminating and essential background reading, with Part I covering many of the principles of statistical physics. Each chapter contains a list of exercises to enhance understanding of the material and a list of "Open Challenges" which provoke new avenues of research. I personally think that the book references the research literature extremely well (indeed the authors have themselves made substantial contributions to the field) which makes it easy to pursue further details on areas of interest. I regard the book as essential for anyone wishing to develop an understanding of anomalous diffusion in disordered media and to be particularly accessible to graduate students and young researchers. It has certainly made it easier for me to make the transition from student to researcher in this area of statistical physics.

Book Description
This book offers a modern treatment of diffusion in solids, covering such core topics as the transport of mass through the lattice of a crystalline solid. Part I of the book develops basic concepts in diffusion field theory and illustrates them with several applications, while Part II focuses on key solid-state principles needed to apply diffusion theory to real materials.
Customer Reviews:
A fine modern book on a good old topic at last !!!.......2005-08-20
To the curious minds of today and tomorrow:
I've recently gotten this book as a present and read a few chapters of it to date. As I am well versed in diffusion, I presume it's ok for me to comment on the book without having fully read it.
After reading a few chapters, and perusing over the entire volume, I was most impressed with Dr. Glickman's text. He's to be commended for having done a very fine job.
Diffusion is inherently a very mathematical subject. Yet, without a proper presentation of the important aspects of the physical phenomena it is barrren and simply reduced to solving partial differential equations. Glickman's book, seems to succeed at providing the physical picture of diffusion with utmost clarity, while maintaining mathematical rigor. Furthermore, it is up to date and exposes the reader to recent developments in the study of diffusion phenomena. The treatment is primarily on the phenomenology of diffusion. If you fancy to learn more about diffusion kinetics, I recommend the book by Khachaturyan (Theory of Structural Phase Transformations in Solids).
As someone who learned diffusion from Physical Metallurgy books, Shewmon's and Carslaw's books, I find Glickman's very refreshing for it's modern, rigorous and comprehensive.
I highly recommend it.
Cheers,
Dr. E.

Not a random walk............2003-02-25
...but a coherent and organized text on diffusion.
This is a complete text on the subject of diffusion. Similar to Shewmon's original "Diffusion in Solids", but Glicksman is more complete and modern. Glicksman is worth purchasing even if you already own Shewmon.
Finally, a complete explanation..........2000-04-06
I have found that mathematically intensive books frequently leave out many of the steps that are critical to a complete understanding of the fundamental equations. Diffusion in Solids does a wonderful job of taking you from start to finish in each problem presented. It is a complete tome worth every dollar spent. Thanks Marty!

Book Description
This second edition is extensively revised from the author's successful "A Primer of Diffusion Problems" (Wiley, 1988), and includes new exercises, three new appendices, and a new chapter on surface rate limitation and segregation. The goal of
Diffusion Phenomena remains the same, which is to teach basic aspects of and methods of solution for diffusion phenomena through physical examples. In this introductory text, the emphasisis placed on modeling and methodology that bridge the gap between physico-chemical statements of certain kinetic processes and their reduction to diffusion problems. This concise and readable, yet authoritative book will appeal to physicists, chemists, biologists, and applied mathematicians studying diffusion regardless of origin of the phenomena or application.

Book Description
In this vivid and comprehensible introduction to materials science, the author expands the modern concepts of metal physics to formulate basic theory applicable to other engineering materials, such as ceramics and polymers. Written for engineering students and working engineers with little previous knowledge of solid-state physics, this textbook enables the reader to study more specialized and fundamental literature of materials science. Dozens of illustrative photographs, many of them transmission electron microscopy images, plus line drawings, aid developing a firm appreciation of this complex topic. Hard-to-grasp terms such as "textures" are lucidly explained - not only the phenomenon itself, but also its consequences for the material properties. This excellent book makes materials science more transparent.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE RESEARCH LAB TYNDALL AFB FL MATERIALS AND MANUFACTURING DIRECTORATE report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A826443. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This study evaluated the fire threat associated with the use of JP-8 as compared to the fire threat associated with the use of JP-4 during normal hangar aircraft maintenance operations. Evaluations included fuel ignition sources, flame spread, flat-plate fuel spills and fire energy releases. JP-4, JP-8 and JP-5 fuels were tested in the analytical chemistry facility walk-in hood to determine the ignition characteristics for each when exposed to an electrical arc and a flame. The fuels were tested for vapor ignition height above the surface of a fuel spill. Flame spread rate tests were also conducted in the walk-in hood. Flame spread tests were conducted in a controlled temperature V-shaped trough. Fuel temperatures were varied from 80 to 160 deg F for all of the above tests. JP-4 and JP-8 were evaluated at Test Range I and Test Range II for ignition characteristics when exposed to hazardous electrical tools and equipment, welding and acetylene cutting operations, electrical arcs and ignited matches. Flat-plate fire intensity tests were conducted inside of a Third-Generation Aircraft Shelter, with a 30 foot high ceiling. Fuels were spilled and burned inside a 20' X 18' steel test pan on an 18' X 18', four inch thick concrete pad. These tests evaluated JP-4, JP-8 and JP-5 flat-plate fuel spills and fires. Temperature and heat flux data was collected and analyzed to compare fire intensities.
Book Description
This collection of articles gives a nice overview of the fast growing field of diffusion and transport. The area of non-Browman statistical mechanics has many extensions into other fields like biology, ecology, geophysics etc. These tutorial lectures address e.g. Lévy flights and walks, diffusion on metal surfaces or in superconductors, classical diffusion, biased and anomalous diffusion, chemical reaction diffusion, aging in glassy systems, diffusion in soft matter and in nonsymmetric potentials, and also new problems like diffusive processes in econophysics and in biology.

Book Description
III-V semiconductors, of which gallium arsenide is the best known, have been important for some years and appear set to become much more so in the future. They have principally contributed to two technologies: microwave devices and optoelectronics. Recent advances in the production of thin layers have made possible a whole new range of devices based on multi-quantum wells. The heat treatments used in the manufacture of semiconductor devices means that some diffusion must take place. A good understanding of diffusion processes is therefore essential to maintain control over the technology. Atomic Diffusion in III-V Semiconductors presents a lucid account of the experimental work that has been carried out on diffusion in III-Vs and explores the advanced models that explain the results. A review of the III-V group of semiconductors outlines the special properties that make them so attractive for some types of devices. Discussion of the basic elements of diffusion in semiconductors provides the theory necessary to understand the subject in depth, and the book gives hints on how to assess the published data. Chapters on diffusion of shallow donors, shallow acceptors, transition elements, and very fast-diffusing elements provide a critical review of published works. The book also presents the neglected subject of self-diffusion, including a section on superlattices. Atomic Diffusion in III-V Semiconductors will be of interest to research workers in semiconductor science and technology, and to postgraduate students in physics, electronics, and materials science.
