Customer Reviews:
Good book but a bit dated.......2005-03-06
Ive only had has this book a short time but I like it. There are lots of color images and text book like explanations.
However, the examples are somewhat dated as the book was published in 2001. Most of the sample images are showing some low poly objects, or discussing ways of representing trees which are frankly out of date. No mention that I saw so far of Vue D'esprit, which is far superior to some of the software discussed, such as VistaPro.
The authors need to update it with newer images and discuss some of the newer software, a lot of changes in 3d rendering have emerged in the last 4 years.
I doubt somebody who has been using WCS, Vue, Terragen, Maya, or any advanced 3D landscape artist would find a whole lot of use for this book, but it would be good to give an overview and explain some terminology for a beginner.

Book Description
In this imaginative and generously illustrated book, Tadahiko Higuchi applies a methodology to landscape that is similar to that developed by Kevin Lynch for investigating the extent to which urban settings are legible and "imageable" to their inhabitants. He identifies features such as landmarks, boundaries, paths, and nodes that enable people moving through a landscape to piece together a reliable mental map of their surroundings, beginning with major structural elements and filling in with successively finer detail.
Tadahiko Higuchi is Associate Professor of Environmental Engineering at Yamanashi University.

In the Land of Moab
Photographs & Essays by Tom Till
Internationally celebrated Moab Utah photographer Tom Till presents In the Land of Moab, a book of photographs and essays championing the endangered Canyon Country of the Southwest. Focusing on the rivers, mesas, canyons and mountains of one of America's most spectacular wilderness areas, In the Land of Moab is a heartfelt tribute through images and words to the slickrock landscape surrounding Moab Utah. Till's essays, accompanying the photographs recall a life spent exploring Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, BLM wilderness, the La Sal Mountains, and the Colorado River.
In the first photography book ever done on the Canyon Country by a resident, celebrated photographer Tom Till turns his lens solely on the landscape that has inspired his career.
In over 80 images, most never before published, this book reveals an endangered land that most visitors to Moab never see.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre publication.......2006-03-27
While Tom Till is a wonderful photographer - I stop by his shop every time I'm in Moab - it is unfortunate that he prefers to use a local publisher for his books. Many images in the books are printed with garish colors and poor focus. I've seen the original photos, and this mediocre publication does not do them justice.

Book Description
This book provides the first comprehensive review of the available information on the ecology of recently-deglaciated terrain and critically evaluates the methodology currently employed in such studies. The theme developed is that the ecology of these regions can only be fully understood by giving due consideration to the role and interaction of both physical and biological processes in the development of the landscape. By adopting this geoecological approach, the spatial variation and dynamics of vegetation and soils is considered in relation to other aspects of the landscape such as topographic variation, climate, and geomorphic processes. A geoecological model is thus outlined that provides both a framework for interpreting the varied ecological nature of glacier forelands found throughout the world, and also an agenda for future research.

Kansas in Color: Photographs Selected by Kansas! Magazine
ASIN: 0700607277 |
Book Description
This luminous volume offers a rich feast of words and images depicting nature's unexpected beauty in Kansas. With a keen ecological sense, O. J. Reichman and Steve Mulligan present a breathtaking reminder of the state's remarkable natural heritage.
Reflecting the marvelous alchemy of earth, wind, fire, and water enacted over countless centuries, Reichman's meditative text and Mulligan's stunning color photographs reveal a wondrously diverse state. Ranging across both widely known and unfamiliar forests and prairies, rivers and lakes, geological formations and botanical splendors, they celebrate this diversity.
Featured in these pages are the sunlit bluffs of the Arikaree River, the Red Hills beneath a winter sky, the meandering Chikaskia River, Castle Rock, Pillsbury Crossing, Keyhole Arch in Monument Rocks National Landmark, Breidenthal Reserve's oak and hickory forests, sweeping waves of Big Bluestem and spring fires on Konza Prairie, Cimarron National Grasslands, the Mill Creek waterfall, Shermerhorn Cave, the wetlands of Cheyenne Bottoms, and a vast array of blooming phlox, columbine, larkspur, butterfly milkweed, dogwood, and wild rose.
More than any previous work, Living Landscapes of Kansas captures the essence of a state alive with natural beauty.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best Geomorphology texts.......2004-01-03
I always thought that this was the best written, most comprehensive, yet concise, geomorphology text that I ever found. When time came for me to drastically weed out my library, this was the only book on the subject that I kept. It is a scholarly treatment, but not a mathematical one.
The chapter structure is as follows: 1. Introduction to Geomorphology, 2. Weathering and Mass Wasting, 3. Stream Growth and Valley Development, 4. The Development of Stream Eroded Landscapes, 5. Geomorphic Systems- Theory and Philosophy, 6. Glaciers and Glaciated Landscapes, 7. Wind, Waves, Ground Water, and Volcanism.
All subjects are excellently illustrated by full page portions of actual topographic maps, as well as, crisp cross-sections and diagrams.
This one volume seems to cover just about all the basics of the field. Anything in more depth would probably have to be more of a mathematical/engineering approach. As it is, this slim volume gives a comprehensive appreciation of the structures and processes that form our dynamic, intelligent, planet.
Indeed, not only will you understand the processes that mold the landscape anywhere on earth, but these same principles have been shown to be applicable in the field of planetary geology.
Book Description
This updated and revised fourth edition covers all topics in mechanics from elementary Newtonian mechanics, canonical and rigid body mechanics to relativistic mechanics and nonlinear dynamics.
In particular, symmetries and invariance principles, geometrical structures and continuum mechanics play an important role. Scheck’s
Mechanics enables the reader to develop understanding of the general principles from which equations of motions may be derived, to appreciate the importance of symmetries as a basis for quantum mechanics and to get practice in using theoretical tools and concepts that are essential for all branches of physics.
The book contains numerous problems with complete solutions, and some practical examples. This will be appreciated in particular by students using the text to accompany lectures on mechanics. The book ends with some historical remarks on important pioneers in mechanics.
Customer Reviews:
A very complete book.......2006-05-11
Although I agree that one might be scared by the presence of sophisticated chapters like the one devoted to differential geometry, I find that this book is the best for an undergraduate level. It begins with Newtonian mechanics (some knowledge on linear algebra and calculus assumed) and covers all the fundamental points of modern mechanics in a rigorous and straightforward way, including a chapter in special relativity and another on dynamical systems and chaos. As it emphasizes the relevant concepts and formalism of simmetries, it naturally leads to quantum mechanics and can be used by advanced undergrad or graduate students interested in the geometrical foundations of mechanics.
Even though it is certainly not the easiest book available, if you have to buy just one, buy this!
Excellent, but not as a first contact with Mechanics.......2001-11-20
I would agree on the rather high quality of the present
book, as pointed out in the other review.
However, the books seems not appropriate for a first contact
with Newtonian mechanics.
While the book makes every effort to introduce the reader to
modern concepts used in Mechanics, notably its setting in a
differential geometric context and an introduction to nonlinear
dynamical systems, the very basis of vector mechanics receives
only attention from one chapter.
This is clearly inadequate and a thourough understanding of
elementary vector mechanics and a good round of problem solving
is certainly essential before addressing even the simplest
Lagrangian mechanics.
The reason I want to point this out, is that the book is used
at an early level in German universities.
That is scary. I can well imagine people attempting to walk
through tangent spaces, but not able to integrate a simple
dynamics problem in R^2.
Please be careful!
The greatest undergratuate book in Mechanics........1999-11-28
This book is the greatest there is for a study of mechanics on an undergratuate level. This book covers alot of subjects with a unique combination of strictness and easyness. It's a must for all physics and mathematics students. It's index: 1.Elementary Newton Mechanics 2.The Principles of Canonical Mechanics 3.The Mechanics of Rigid Bodies 4.Relativistic Mechanics 5.Geometric Apsects of Mechanics 6.Stability and Chaos 7.Continuous Systems

Book Description
The present second edition is now identical to the fourth German edition and includes both small additons (e.g. in Chap. 2 on canonical mechanics, in Chap. 3 discussing the tippe top, and in Chap. 7 on continuous systems) and revisions of details. Moreover, new problems have been added, and complete solutions to all problems are presented. This will be appreciated in particular by students using the text to accompany lectures on mechanics. The main features of the book remain unchanged: the coverage extends from elementary Newtonian Mechanics to the discussion of deterministic chaos and continuous systems. The book ends with a mathematical appendix, a guide to the literature and some historical remarks on important pioneers in mechanics.
Customer Reviews:
Fast paced but clearly written.......2003-05-10
For the listed price of $38US this book is indeed a bargain. It is clearly written with a rational organization of topics and most sections are accompanied with meaningful examples. I especially enjoyed the development of the Hamiltonian. On the other hand, this is not an easy text - you may not be able to watch Jerry Springer as you read it; a basic familiarity calculus, vector analysis and physics will be needed to make any head way at all. I wish I had used this text in college.

Customer Reviews:
"...useful overall, but lacking in some regards.".......2003-05-24
The Haynes Repair Manual for the 1993-1997 Chrysler LH cars is useful overall, but lacking in some regards. I bought this manual as a complete beginner to the mechanics of automobiles. I only know the primary basics, and only in minimal detail. I thought this book would be a great way to get to know my 1997 Dodge Intrepid in a more intimate way. To an extent, I now can. The manual does lack in a few areas though, mainly in description and illustration. While there is basic instruction for all the repair and maintenance jobs covered, detail is scant. The pictures and illustrations are sometimes marginally helpful, but are usually of poor quality. Sometimes the pictures seem to not even correspond to what the task at hand is.
The manual can also become frustrating when you cannot find a certain repair or other task you'd like to read about. For example, nowhere in this manual can I find information about the reverse light that is located in the center of the rear lights cluster on my Dodge Intrepid. Another instance of frustration occurred for me when I was reading about the wheel and tire sizes for my vehicle. The manual briefly discusses tire size, quote "All vehicles covered by this manual are equipped with metric-sized fiberglass or steel belted radial tires (see illustration)". Upon examining the illustration, where it gives a tire size of P185/80R13, confusion is easily encountered. After talking with other Intrepid owners, and e-mailing Haynes Publishing Group, I was able to determine that the illustrated tire size was just an example and was not intended to indicate the actual tire size of the vehicles covered in the manual. In case you're wondering, the actual stock tire size for the Dodge Intrepid is either P225/60R16 or P205/70R15, depending on the trim (base or ES). The manual doesn't say this though, and I have yet to see where it discusses wheel (rim) size at all.
So if you're planning to buy this manual, I hope I have given you a little insight on how it reads. In my opinion it was worth the money I spent on it, even if I found it a little lacking for someone of my skill level. More pictures and better detail, and maybe some color, would have made this a five star manual for me. As it is, I can give it a solid 3.5.

Great Book on Celtic Spirituality.......2001-05-31
David Adam writes on Celtic spirituality from a biblical point of view, inspired on the old hymn "Be Thou My Vision", based on the Celtic Christian tradition. Every chapter begins with one line or phrase from this hymn, which Adam uses to develop his main theme. For those interested in Celtic spirituality, the book deals with issues like our relationship with God's criation, spiritual wilderness, stillness, fellowship with God, faith and confidence, God's protection, God's love, His presence, etc, which are the favorite themes of this tradition. After each chapter there are suggested exercises to help the reader experience the subject of that chapter. The author's purpose is to stimulate the reader to worship God. Among these exercises there are many prayers that Adam himself has written or colected from others and "tried and tested with small groups from his own parish and on retreats". David Adam is an authority on Celtic Christianity, and has written at least seven other books on this issue. He used to work as a miner and for over twenty years he was the Vicar of Danby in North Yorkshire. For the fans of the Irish band Iona, it might be intesting to know that their album "Jorney into the Mourn" was inspired by this pleasent and deep book.

A Journey in Native Spirituality told as fiction.......1999-10-25
A truly great story offering an insight into the deplorable conditions imposed on the original Americans and their religion by the dominant society. We follow Kyle Charging Shield on his return from air combat in Vietnam and his return to his peoples' traditional religion. Meet many truly great Holy men and have their ceremonies explained. This is truly a great learning book that is at the same time fun to read.
Open your mind and heart........1999-06-10
I enjoyed this book. The fiction woven in with the non-fiction. To me it takes a brave person to stand alone and fight for what they truly believe in. Charging Sheild fought in an unpopular war (Vietnam), then came home for fight for his People, their religion, beliefs, customs. Charging Sheild (Eagle Man) truly deserves the title Warrior. When you read this book, please read it with an open mind and heart.
McGaa FICTION!!!! Priceless!!.......1999-05-26
Keep in mind this story is written as FICTION. The story line speaks the "Thread of Truth". Those familiar with McGaa's non-fiction works will easily see the similar threads. A nice change of pace, easy reading as most novels are. A story that will definately change the way you view your world. A good love story for those "fiction" love story readers. Buy it for your Gram-expose her to the Natural Way....in a Good Way!!
A total immersion in the kaleidescope of human existence!.......1999-05-25
This book accomplishes something many writers try but few succeed in doing. Historical fiction has traditionally provided a way for writers to weave real "factoids" together with personal recollection and fantasy. McGaa goes beyond that by weaving factual historical events into the visionary life-world of Native Americans. Even more remarkably, however, he is able to weave personal and historical recollection, vision, and dreams through time without losing the reader! As McGaa tracks the path of a modern-day warrior living his personal vision along the historical path of his ancestors, the reader is at once in today and yesterday, in both the "real" and the visionary world. This IS Mitakuye Oyasin! McGaa and his story are related and connected to the lived world of the Native American in a profound way that literally gives flesh and breath to history.
"Eagle Vision" is a vital chapter in American Indian history.......1999-04-16
Ed McGaa, Eagle Man, has provided historians and spiritual seekers an invaluable, first-hand account of renewing the spirituality of the American Indian. Although told as fiction, "Eagle Vision" is nonetheless an important historical document. Most Americans don't realize that after the American Indian Religious Crimes Act of 1889, the constitutionally guaranteed Freedom of Religion was denied to American Indians. It required an act of true heroism for a few individuals to defy authority and bring these important religious ceremonies back into the open. "Eagle Vision" will become a classic in the years to come, and I sincerely hope that one day it will be made into a movie. Charging Shield's story has much to teach us about our freedoms and about spirituality.

Very touching, great for all ages........2000-08-01
This book was given to a friend of mine as a gift. I read it and soon began giving it to others too. It has a very heartwarming story of a group of Lakota people traveling all over to spread the spiritual wisdom of Black Elk's vision. It's fun because you can follow the travellers on a map at the beginning of the book as they go all over the world and celebrate with indigenous people who they find share the same basic ideals as them. I bought a copy for my nephew, and my father as well. Too bad it's out of print, but amazon found me two copies.

Excellent for Ann Arborites and visitors!!.......1999-06-11
Contains some of the most beautiful photos I've seen of our picturesque town. I grew up in Ann Arbor and now live in nearby Saline, and found most of the places I was looking for. Dale Fisher, being a local photographer, has captured all that we love about this diverse town. The book does an excellent job of covering many areas of Ann Arbor, as well as the surrounding communities. Makes a great gift for graduations, birthdays, or any occasion.
