Book Description
Ethical questions arising from developments in modern biology, such as If we are genetically determined, where is free will? Is it right for humans to create new foods? and Should organizations be allowed to hold the keys to the production of vast amounts of food globally in the form of a patent? are discussed in this collection of presentations from the 2004 European Commission sponsored conference "Modern Biology and Visions of Humanity." Organized into four sections, the contributions from this event reflect on the complex relationship between science and society and touch on such subjects as what are the benefits of science, who decides its uses, and how science relates to other areas of human creativity. Leading figures in the worlds of science and the arts take sides in these essays in either promoting the products and services biology provides, challenging biology's vision of humanity, or questioning the whole approach of Western science from a political perspective.
Book Description
The Cat and company travel by hot air balloon up and into various weather phenomena including rain, snow, thunder, tornadoes, and (yikes!) even hurricanes! Along the way they learn about thermometers, anemometers, wind vanes, cloud formations, humidity, fog, smog, weather folklore, and how to stay safe in lightning. Written and illustrated in Seussian style, this a great addition to the Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library!
Customer Reviews:
Happy Grandson.......2006-07-08
My grandson was very happy with this book. He loves reading books by Dr. Seuss and knows when he comes to Grandma's house a new one will be waiting for him. The book was presented as "used" but it looks brand new! Delivery time was as promised. Only negative comment for all the used books I have purchased thus far is that the postage charged has been far more than the book.
Excellent intro to weather concepts.......2004-10-25
I think this is one of the best of the books in Cat in the Hat's Learning Library. In this book, the rhymes are crisp and interesting. Some of the concepts introduced/covered include: meteorologists, weather maps, clouds, evaporation, condensation, snow, rain, thunder, lightning, tornadoes, and climatology. This book covers a lot in the simple and effective Cat in the Hat style.

Book Description
Highly readable and nontechnical, this illustrated survey explores the nature and causes of lightning. Topics include ball lightning, St. Elmo's Fire, the workings of lightning rods, the effects of lightning on trees and buildings, the formation of thunderstorms, how to photograph lightning, and other fascinating subjects.
Customer Reviews:
inspirational.......2007-06-08
it was a good present for my uncle who has been struck by lightning.
Very informative.......2005-09-09
If you want to learn about lightening without too much science this is a great book. Very well written by a top scientist in the field.
Good information source.......2005-09-07
An excellent little book on lightning, especially for its price. Fairly non-technical, it gives a fine overview of nearly all the known characteristics of different types of lightning, and many hints of how to protect oneself from its effects. Answers nearly all the common questions about lightning. An excellent book for any person to read who lives in lightning country, which means just about anyone, anywhere.
Best book to learn about lightning and related subjects.......2002-04-08
Within my awareness, this is the best author on the physics of lightning (voltage, current, charge, speed, event sequence, frequency of occurrence, length/width of channel, temperature, etc). Related subjects such as injuries, death rate, damage, protection, thunderstorms, harnessing power, etc are also discussed. The book could use updating with data acquired in the last 16 years (1986-2002). An improvement to the book could be more info on lightning protection. Another book by Uman, 'Lightning', is less general and more technical about the physics of lightning.
Interesting book........2000-10-21
I recommend this book to all who have any interest in natural science. I was personally surprised at how interesting of a read this book was. Ulman did well brining to "light" topics that have plagued me about lightning since my childhood. He also satiated my engineering taste for technical aspects of the electrical phenomena. Photographs and diagrams add well to the text and support the facts presented without overburdening the reader with too much information.
Book Description
Among the most popular subjects in preschool curriculum, this basic early-childhood concept comes to life in this sturdy board book that allows even 2-year-olds to ³look inside² and find out interesting facts through easy-to-understand captions and stunning, photo-realistic paintings.
Customer Reviews:
What's the weather like outside?.......2003-02-09
This little board book is one that really young children love and introduces them to differernt weather patterns at the same time. There really isn't a story, but the book's colorful pictures follow a family as they enjoy a day at the beach, leave because of a storm, follow them home, and watch the family play at home in the winter. The lift-up flaps are a real plus and kids love flipping those up, especially the one of lightning and the one with the rainbow behind it.
Book Description
Out and About introduces children to the many different kinds of weather and outdoor words such as "sun," "rain," and "cloud."
Customer Reviews:
cute board book for baby.......2004-02-08
Out and About is a colorful board book that teaches children to weather and outdoor words. There is one picture and word per pages. This keeps even the youngest babies attention while being read aloud. Big study board pages make it easy for small kids to turn.
We read this to our 9 month old daughter. She enjoyed being able to turn the pages herself. She seemed to enjoy the bright and colorful artwork in the book.
Our family would recommed this book for children ages 6 months to 2 years. Children in this age bracket will enjoy sharing this book with their family. This book is a fun and easy way to introduce basic concepts and words.
Product Description
This thematic book provides you with full-color stories and ready-to-use activities to teach skills and concepts across the whole early childhood curriculum. The skills presented support preschool programs, kindergarten classrooms, day-care centers, home-school programs and ELL for primary grades. Grades PreK - K

Book Description
This monograph stems from the lectures given during the summer course at the University of La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain. It includes the main characterization techniques useful nowadays for ceramics, glasses, and glass-ceramics, and reviews the new microscopes for characterizing materials, and gives an overview of inorganic materials such as zeolites. The theory for XRD texture analysis and analytical methods are also covered. The book is not only up to date on these techniques but also on applications to inorganic materials, both amorphous and crystalline, such as glasses, glass-ceramics, and ceramics.

Book Description
Successful colloidal processing requires an understanding of all the relevant forces that can affect the formation of a stable slurry (free from strength-limiting agglomerates). These papers discuss the pros and cons of various techniques one can use to characterize particle interactions and the forces involved in selected suspensions. Actual techniques, not experiments and results, are covered in detail. This truly is a practitioner's handbook of characterization techniques.

Book Description
The measurement of particle size and charge in liquid dispersions is critical to a broad spectrum of laboratory and industrial applications. Recent advances in theory, hardware design and methodology have stimulated the development and commercialization of ultrasonic and dielectric techniques for particle characterization in suspensions. This New handbook documents the most recent advances in these emerging measurement techniques that are based on the use of high-frequency acoustic or electric fields. An international group of leading scientists, engineers and product developers describes specific materials applications in practical terms, ranging from advanced ceramic processing to food colloids. Also discusses the utilization of ultrasonics for on-line process control and other industrial applications.
