    Book Description

Leukocyte adhesion molecules promise to be highly effective as antigens in the antibody-directed leucocyte elimination treatment prior to grafting or in cases of acute and chronic inflammatory disease. This comprehensive review of contemporary research provides thorough discussions of the structure of these molecules, their in vitro function, and the role that they play in vivo as evidenced by results shown in inflammatory models where antibodies against these molecules are given to inhibit their function. The blend of basic science and clinical applications provides clear evidence of the biological relevance of cell-cell interactions and the many potential clinical dividends afforded by understanding the molecular basis of cell adhesion.

            Book Description

Based on decades of research and written in clear, concise prose by one of the foremost geographers in North America, John C. Hudson's Across This Land is a comprehensive regional geography of the North American continent.

Clearly organized, the book divides the entire United States and Canada into six major regions, then further subdivides them into twelve smaller areas. Hudson emphasizes each region or area's distinguishing place-specific attributes, including -- to a larger degree than previous regional geographies -- political considerations. In this way, the book tells the story of each region, relying on a brisk narrative that reveals the dynamic processes of their distinctive characteristics.

The first extensive regional geography of the North American continent in over seventy-five years, Hudson's Across This Land will become the standard text in geography courses dealing with Canada and the U.S. as well as a popular reference work for scholars, students, and lay readers.

              Book Description

Paterson's geography of the United States and Canada has held its reputation as one of the best texts in regional geography through eight editions. It is noted for its breadth of view, analytic approach and readability. The new edition will retain the basic structure of the previous one, but more emphasis will be placed on urban development and environmental problems--without ignoring the importance of the more sparsely populated areas. Paterson examines the glaciation, climate, and soils of North America, before profiling its people and cities. He looks at governmental use of land and water resources, as well as agriculture and industry. After analyzing transportation methods, Paterson concentrates on specific regions: New England, the Canadian heartland, and Appalachia. He devotes further chapters to California, Hawaii, and the Spanish and Indian Southwest. Paterson studies every region of the continent in detail. A work of great breadth and scholarship, Paterson's book will benefit all undergraduate students of geography.

                        Book Description

Where else can that well-known phrase be better applied than to a study of the Finns in Sudbury? “Rock” defines the physical reality of the Sudbury setting: rugged hills, mines, farms and forests set in the Precambrian Shield. “Hard” defines the human setting: Finnish immigrants having to contend with the problems and stresses of relocating to a new culture, with livelihoods that required great endurance as well as a tolerance for hazardous conditions.

Since 1883 Finnish immigrants in Sudbury, men and women alike, have striven to improve their lot through the options available to them. Despite great obstacles, the Finns never flagged in their unwavering fight for workers' rights and the union movement. And as agricultural settlers, labour reformers, builders of churches, halls, saunas and athletic fields, Finns left an indelible imprint on the physical and human landscape. In the process they have played an integral part in the transformation of Sudbury from a small struggling rail town to its present role as regional capital of northwestern Ontario.

This penetrating study of the cultural geography of the Finns in the Sudbury region provides an international, national and local framework for analysis — a model for future studies of other cultural groups.

                        Book Description

Emergent Computation emphasizes the interrelationship of the different classes of languages studied in mathematical linguistics (regular, context-free, context-sensitive, and type 0) with aspects to the biochemistry of DNA, RNA, and proteins. In addition, aspects of sequential machines such as parity checking and semi-groups are extended to the study of the Biochemistry of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Mention is also made of the relationship of algebraic topology, knot theory, complex fields, quaternions, and universal turing machines and the biochemistry of DNA, RNA, and proteins.

Emergent Computation tries to avoid an emphasis upon mathematical abstraction ("elegance") at the expense of ignoring scientific facts known to Biochemists. Emergent Computation is based entirely upon papers published by scientists in well-known and respected professional journals. These papers are based upon current research. A few examples of what is not ignored to gain "elegance":

                        - DNA exists as triple and quadruple strands

                        - Watson-Crick complementary bases have mismatches

                        - There can be more than four bases in DNA

                        - There are more than sixty-four codons

                        - There may be more that twenty amino acids in proteins

While Emergent Computation emphasizes bioinformatics applications, the last chapter studies mathematical linguistics applied to areas such as languages found in birds, insects, medical applications, anthropology, etc.

Emergent Computation tries to avoid unnecessary mathematical abstraction while still being rigorous. The demands made upon the knowledge of chemistry or mathematics is minimized as well. The collected technical references are valuable in itself for additional reading.

Over three decades, Richard Selzer has brought his skills as a surgeon to the page, wrestling powerful descriptions of pain and deliverance into words. This collection gathers representative writings from the whole of his career, including set pieces like the four-part "Letter to a Young Surgeon" and frequently anthologized essays on such delicate matters as delivering the news of a death to loved ones (and what happens to the corpse afterward).

Death is a constant theme in these essays, for "only in literature do the dead have a voice." Selzer has a marked talent for removing some of the mystery and fear from what is, after all, an inevitable process. He is also superb at describing such routine events of the surgical theater as the scrubbing of hands, the proper and improper functioning of blood and organs, and the instantaneous decisions that a doctor must make during a normal day. Selzer's style is often ornate--"What heartbroken psoriatic, surveying his embattled skin," he writes, "would not volunteer for an unanesthetized flaying could it but rid him of his pink sequins, his silver spangles?"--and not to every taste, but his gentle reflections on human frailty afford a revealing view of the practice of medicine, which Selzer clearly loves. "Say what you will about writing," he notes, "there is no more thrilling an achievement than the successful completion of a difficult surgical dissection." --Gregory McNamee

Preface: I am a medical student and apparently not the target audience of this book.

I simply could not force myself to continue reading this book as the experience was not unlike stabbing myself over and over again with a pair of scissors. I am by nature a pragmatist and I prefer concrete things, but here's my take. This guy may have sold millions of books. He did the standard invocation of ancient greeks, the druids, God, etc, lots of fluffy words, to make himself feel erudite. But there's no there there. I would rather read a bad romance, which is what this book strives to be.

It is very easy to explain his writing style and why I hate it so much. One example: "Touch the great artery. Feel it bound like a deer." Another: "Press your ear against the body, .... as a child holding a seashell". My second favorite: "In the canals, cilia paddle silently, like an Iroquois canoe".

The all time best, about a regular Joe patient who "miraculously" healed: "Could such a man have felt the brush of wings?"

Get it? It's a harlequin for Yalies. I have newfound disrespect for both editorial writers and book award judges.

This book is not techinical, it is not emotional, it is poetic. You can't actually relate to any characters, there are none that I saw. If you like his writing, your favorite actors are William Shatner and Charlton Heston.

This is my first review. If you like this book, great. I just wanted to warn folks of what they're getting, not make a judgment about others reading preferences. Had I received this warning, I wouldn't have wasted my time.

This book is simply great. I have really enjoyed reading it--Selzer has a style unto himself, and he is a great writer. I have been reading an essay a night for a few weeks now and it is superb.
