Book Description
Introducing Biological Rhythms is a primer that serves to introduce individuals to the area of biological rhythms. It describes the major characteristics and discusses the implications and applications of these rhythms, while citing scientific results and references. Also, the primer includes essays that provide in-depth historic and other background information for those interested in more specific topics or concepts.
It covers a basic cross-section of the field of chronobiology clearly enough so that it can be understood by a novice, or an undergraduate student, but that it would also be sufficiently technical and detailed for the scientist.

Feedback from others the authors have received.......2006-08-17
As a co-author of the book "Introducing Biological Rhythms," I would like to share with potential readers some of the comments that we have received from others who have already received a copy. I hope this may help others who might be interested in some of the topics in our book. Thanks.
"I started immediately to read [the book] and also brought it with me on the train, in the plane and any place where I could sit and read. It is well written... To me it is the only book today that covers the whole field of Chronobiology, and you find everything there. It is a very useful reference that I will recommend to anybody that might be interested in the field. I will also get the institute to buy extra copies... I am really impressed by your work." Ole D. Laerum, PhD, Director, Stem Cell Research Group, The Gade Institute, Department of Pathology, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway.
"It represents an encyclopedic coverage viewed from Minnesota...; the infradian cover is particularly interesting." Hugh H. Simpson, MD, Division of Pathology, Royal Infirmary, Glasgow, Scotland.
"The book looks beautiful... Congratulations for this great amount of work, with an approach that is different from the one now `in vogue' in our field!" Francis Lévi, MD, Directeur, Cancer Chronotherapeutics, Hôpital Paul Brousse et Université Paris XI, Villejuif, France.
"I am impressed by the number of pages that you have written. It is not surprising that this work demanded several years. I will now read it with a great deal of interest." Bernard Millet, PhD, Botany Laboratory, Besancon University, Besancon, France.
"I just received your book, congratulations. I already have my students using it. It is great. What a marvelous accomplishment." Jayna L. Ditty, PhD, Dept of Biology, St. Thomas University, St. Paul, MN.
"Your book is magnificent. I very much respect your work and opinions about rhythms. I hope to give the book some serious reading in the near future. Will pass your book info on to other scientists." Helen V. Ratajczak, PhD, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Ridgefield, CT.
"I'd like to share, now as a reader, my very good impression of your book. I like it very much. It's written in a way I appreciate in books - with clear aims and clear messages. The Take-Home Message is a great thing. I like the style - friendly and simple (even when you're presenting complicated things!), with nice humor." Oleg Tsinkalovsky, MD, Centre of International Health, University of Bergen, Bergen, Norway.
"You have my sincere gratitude for undertaking the Herculean and useful task, for your scholarship in doing it, and for the broad scope of the book on which I congratulate you, and I trust that in reading it I can learn much more about the field and about the two authors." Franz Halberg, MD, Halberg Chronobiology Center, University of Minnesota, Mpls, MN.
Book Description
Introducing Evolution takes a fresh look at the often misunderstoof concepts of natural selection and the selfish gene. Drawing on the latest findings from genetics, ecology and animal behavior a string of examples reveals how the evidence in favor of evolutionary theory is stronger than ever.
Customer Reviews:
Kind of reminded me of HS biology class.......2007-06-14
Not a lot to say about this one. Some good information and an easy read, but really didn't tell me a whole lot about Evolution I didn't already know from HS biology.
One of the Best book on Evolution.......2006-02-24
This is one of the best books I have read on evolution. I bought the book day before yesterday, and believe me - I finished it in one sitting; I literally glued. If I could I would have given the book 6 star.
What I liked most of this book was the author covered philosophical aspects of theory of evolution and cutting edge theories concerning evolutionary psychology, evolution of culture, altruism and moral sentiments or even evolutionary robotics in addition to provide a basic idea on biological evolution. He quite convincingly established why Darwin's idea (evolution through natural selection) can be compared as "Universal Acid" (proposed by Daniel Dennett) and how Drwin's "dangerous idea" literally pushes Willium Paley's God literally out of window. I know many will be uncomfortable with the bold approach of the author, (just as one of the previous reviewer who gave one star) but hey - accept the reality! We can indeed explain our existence and complexities in living things by the theory of natural selection! Laplace truly uttered, we do not need that (God) hypothesis (anymore)!!!!
I basically agree with Steven Weinberg (American elementary particle physicist; Nobel Laureate of 1979) who said, Biological Evolution refutes the idea of an interested God much more decisively than physics does. And this is only because of Darwin and his Universal Acid - theory of evolution thru natural selection.
Novice readers, who have not started reading evolution yet, can try this. This book will be real fun to read. Bonus is Howard Selina's excellent artworks.
Excellent Primer for pre teens.......2005-05-24
(...)
This book is a primer for the youngster of about 10 to 16. It is written with illustrations on every page making it a lot like a comic book. It is very well done and detailed and this reviewer suspects it would be appealing to a young crowd who has an interest is science. It appears that it may also inspire and interest in science. The explanation of how evolution works and how integral to science this theory is, becomes the strong point of the book.
The fact that the authors proclaim that once evolution and natural selection is understood, the reader would have to abandon all religious thoughts. While that seems obvious to me it may imperil this book from a wider audience. Given that there are many people who understand and support the theory of evolution and maintain religious idealogy simultaneously I think the book may limit its audience to the "choir".
A better book would explain the theory, the obvious conclusions that sensible people see as a result of that theory and let the reader (student) decide for themselves whether this requires or negates a supreme being.
Tries to prove evolution and disprove God but fails at both........2005-03-12
`Introducing Evolution' is an embarrassment to pro-evolution literature. The book gives a rough guide to what the theory of evolution states but does not back any of its statements up with evidence. The author's (who is not a scientist) line of thinking is that the theory of evolution is believed by most scientists therefore it is correct. Lay people do not need to see the `evidence' but should just accept it because Richard Dawkins and others say that it is correct. If you are looking for a book that gives evidence for evolution then this is not for you.
Of course, the book is full of anti-Creationist comments. A few pages are devoted to attacking Creation Science where it informs us that it is religious dogma dressed up as science. The book informs the reader that the only tactic Creationists use is pick holes in the fossil record (not true of course). The book informs the reader that there are plenty of transitional fossils without even mentioning one. The book then gets onto the subject of teaching evolution in Kansas and that is when the authors truly shows his `research' skills. The author claims that the theory of evolution was banned from being taught in schools in the state of Kansas. This is completely false. The state board of education in Kansas decided that they were not going to test children at a state level on evolution. The theory of evolution was still to be taught but school board could decide if they wanted to test children. What the author stated was wrong. At best it can be seen as sloppy research and at worst it can be seen as deliberately lying to support his views. The author ends that particularly chapter by saying `the battle between science and superstition continues' showing his dislike for religion in general.
What is even more disturbing is the obvious atheistic bias throughout the book. The author claims that Natural Selection proves that God does not exist. A few quotes from the militant atheist Richard Dawkins are used to back this up. As this is supposed to be a book to `introduce evolution' to the average person who knows little about the subject, it is disturbing that the author tries to persuade people that evolution is a fact that disproves the idea of God.
Overall, this book is atrocious. Both evolutionist and the undecided should avoid wasting their money on this book.

Book Description
In this text, Shigeji Fujita and Salvador Godoy guide first and second-year graduate students through the essential aspects of superconductivity. The authors open with five preparatory chapters thoroughly reviewing a number of advanced physical concepts-such as free-electron model of a metal, theory of lattice vibrations, and Bloch electrons. The remaining chapters deal with the theory of superconductivity-describing the basic properties of type I, type II compound, and high-Tc superconductors as well as treating quasi-particles using Heisenberg's equation of motion. The book includes step-by-step derivations of mathematical formulas, sample problems, and illustrations.
Book Description
Rooted in the medieval ballad tradition and recounted to the author by a Spanish goatherd, The Three-Cornered Hat relates a madcap series of romantic misadventures. The basis of Manuel de Falla's popular ballet of the same name, it appears here with Captain Poison, a witty "taming-of-the-shrew" tale. Original Spanish with English translation.
Customer Reviews:
A dual-language gem.......2006-08-03
This book, and all the titles in this series, will prove of great value to all who want to become better acquainted with Spanish language and literature.
Book Description
Based on a story by Alarcón, this staple of both the ballet and orchestral repertoires is full of wit and vitality, enhanced with the flavor of Andalusian folk music that permeates Falla's music of the period. Reproduced from authoritative English score published in 1921. Synopsis.

Book Description
One of the best–loved Spanish novels of all time,
The Three–Cornered Hat is a hilarious tale of lust, intrigue, and corruption set in 18th–century Andalusia. The musical compositions inspired by this masterpiece have become staples of both the ballet and orchestral repertoires.
When the hideous and lascivious corregidor Don Eugenio takes a fancy to the formidable— and formidably desirable—Señora Frasquita, the wife of the local miller, the couple sets about foiling his plans for a seduction. There ensues a fast–paced comedy of moonlight flits, clothes swapping, mistaken identity, and slapstick mishaps as the characters struggle in vain to maintain both dignity and marital harmony. Calm is eventually restored in a scene of unmasking and mutual forgiveness of truly operatic proportions. Pedro Alarcón (183391) is one of Spain’s most prominent writers. He is chiefly remembered for his subtly ironic plots and quintessentially Spanish settings and characterizations.
Customer Reviews:
Somewhat humourous Spanish folktale........2006-11-13
The three-cornered hat is based on an old folktale involving a small village in Andulasia, with the romantic complications of an ugly but lovable miller, his wise and beautiful wife and the corrupt and foolish mayor who becomes smitten with the miller's wife. Misunderstandings lead to bedroom shenanigans, but all ends well for the good guys and the mayor gets his.
A wild night in Andalusia.......2004-10-22
This book is like a comedy of errors told as a short novel. It is about a very happy couple, a miller and his beautiful wife, who live in a pretty mill-house in Andalusia, Southern Spain, in the early 1800's. Everybody in town has a crush with the miller's wife, including the town's principal political figure, a disgusting, lascivious old man. When this man tries to seduce the woman, all hell breaks loose in a crazy tale of mistaken identities, nocturnal escapades, horseriding and farce. It is a very easy to read book and it will give you a couple of hours of good-written entertainment, just like if you had gone to the movies, only here you get to decide the faces, places and color of everything.
An amusing tale of morality in a 1800's Spanish community:.......1998-03-24
The Three Cornered Hat is an amusing tale of mistaken identities and moral folkways in the Spain of early 1800's. Though the plot is not an entirely original one (the reader can recall similar stories such as Chaucer's Reeve's Tale), the story is written in an original way, describing the Andalucian countryside and colorful examples of local characters.
Alarcón is an author unknown in most of the world outside of Spain, but I recommend the book as an easily readable and largely enjoyable example of his work.

Amor, celos, suspenso, humor.......2000-09-07
