        Book Description

In this book, seven chapters describe studies aimed at understanding and exploiting the key features of such molecular RNA and DNA devices. In the first section of the book, four chapters are devoted to artificial nucleic acid switches and sensors. These chapters introduce the concept of allosteric ribozymes as molecular switches and sensors; describe nucleic acid enzymes that are switched by oligonucleotides and other nucleic acid enzymes that are switched by proteins; and illustrate how switching elements can be integrated ration-ally into fluorescently signaling molecular sensors made out of nucleic acids. In the second section of the book, three chapters show that nature has been as crafty a molecular-scale engineer as any modern scientist via evolution of natural nucleic acid switches and sensors. RNAs have been found whose activities are modulated either by proteins or by small-molecule metabolites, and both kinds of system are described. Finally, the notion of exploiting naturally occurring RNA switches for drug development is discussed.

            Book Description

In recent years, unprecedented advances in many aspects of the molecular biology of nucleic acids have been witnessed. The area of RNA chemistry has undergone a kind of explosion, with a huge interest in RNA-mediated catalysis. At the same time, our structural understanding of DNA-protein interactions has increased enormously, and the related area of RNA-protein interactions is beginning to gather pace. This softcover edition from the successful series Nucleic Acids and Molecular Biology is devoted to the structure and mechanism of ribozymes, and their potential exploitation. The subject has both important evolutionary implications and potential practical application in the development of therapeutic agents for diseases such as AIDS.

              Book Description

The past decade has witnessed a burst of activity and interest in the discovery and design of drugs that cleave DNA and RNA with sequence specificity. This class of compounds can be used as therapeutic agents, especially in the treatment of cancer and viral diseases. Novel mechanisms have also been discovered, allowing such agents to be used as tools in the study of the structure and function of nucleic acids. The major advances have been achieved with enediyne antibiotics and their synthetic analogues, bleomycin-metal complexes, metal-drug complexes, ribozymes and their mimics, and antisense and antigene oligonucleotides. This, the first book devoted to the area, contains 25 chapters produced by experts on DNA cleavage by enediyne molecules, the mechanism of action of bleomycin, the paradigm of DNA cleavers site-specific DNA and RNA cleavage and its mechanism, RNA cleavage by RNase H, RNA hydrolysis by ribozymes and metal complexes, and redox regulation of the human immunodeficiency virus.
Audience: Chemists, biochemists, pharmacologists and molecular biologists involved in the development of new research approaches in the area of DNA and RNA cleavage.

                Book Description

General inspection of a role performed in the cell by RNAs allows us to distinguish three major groups of transcripts: I. protein-coding mRNAs, II. non-coding housekeeping and III. regulatory RNAs.

The housekeeping RNAs include RNA classes that are generally, constitutively expressed and whose presence is required for normal function and viability of the cells. On the other hand, a group of regulatory RNAs includes RNA species that are expressed at certain stages of organism development or cell differentiation or as a response to external stimuli and can affect expression of other genes on the levels of transcription or translation.

Non-coding RNA transcripts form a heterogeneous class of RNAs that can not be characterized by a single specific function. Initially, the term non-coding RNA (ncRNA) was used primarily to describe polyadenylated and a capped eukaryotic RNAs transcribed by RNA polymerase II, but lacking long open reading frames. Now, this definition can be extended to cover all RNA transcripts that do not show protein-coding capacity and is sometimes used to describe any RNA that does not encode protein, including introns.

This book is an in-depth look at the function of Non-Coding RNAs and their relationship to Molecular Biology and Molecular Biology.

236 pages, 75 figures, 21 tables, hardcover This book is for understanding the essential methods for developing therapeutic applications of ribozymes to disease genes. Detailed protocols are used to design, synthesize and apply Ribozymes to knock out disease-associated genes. The primary target for ribozymes is on cancer genes, however, the application can be used for any type of gene. These methods will help facilitate the use of ribozymes to define the specific role of any gene in the etiology of disease.

                      Book Description

Clay minerals are one of the most important groups of minerals that destroy permeability in sandstones. However, they also react with drilling and completion fluids and induce fines migration during hydrocarbon production. They are a very complex family of minerals that are routinely intergrown with each other, contain a wide range of solid solutions and form by a variety of processes under a wide range temperatures and rock and fluid compositions. In this volume, clay minerals in sandstones are reviewed in terms of their mineralogy and general occurrence, their stable and radiogenic isotope geochemistry, XRD quantification, their effects on the petrophysical properties of sandstones and their relationships to sequence stratigraphy and palaeoclimate. The controls on various clay minerals are addressed and a variety of geochemical issues, including the importance of mass flux, links to carbonate mineral diagenesis and linked clay mineral diagenesis in interbedded mudstone-sandstone are explored. A number of case studies are included for kaolin, illite and chlorite cements, and the occurrence of smectite in sandstone is reviewed. Experimental rate data for clay cements in sandstones are reviewed and there are two model-based case studies that address the rates of growth of kaolinite and illite. The readership of this volume will include sedimentologists and petrographers who deal with the occurrence, spatial and temporal distribution patterns and importance of clay mineral cements in sandstones, geochemists involved in unraveling the factors that control clay mineral cement formation in sandstones and petroleum geoscientists involved in predicting clay mineral distribution in sandstones. The book will also be of interest to geologists involved in palaeoclimate studies basin analysis.

                              Book Description

Graduate text/monograph on polarization, alignment, and orientation effects in atomic collisions, induced by electron or heavy particle impact. The first part of the book presents introductory chapters on light and particle polarization, experimenatal and computational methods, and the density matrix and state multipole formalism. Examples and exercises are included. The second part of the book includes case studies of electron impact and heavy particle excitation, electron transfer, impact ionization and autoionization. Last chapter discusses related topics and applications. The book will include ssome selected seminal papers from the early history of the field of tutorial value. The book is intended as an introductory text for both experimental and theoretical students and researchers. It can be used as a textbook for graduate courses, as a primary source for special topics and seminar courses, and as a standard reference.

                                Book Description

What were the best novels written by Americans during the twentieth century? Does "best" necessarily mean the most influential at the time of publication, or that the book was a best-seller or held the highest standard of writing from purely an academic point of view? Eleanor Gehres, former Director of the Denver Public Library's Western History Department, was assigned the task of evaluating the field of American literature in the twentieth century and came up with this book. Novels recommended by others were discarded if they did not pass Eleanor's criteria: First, was the book important; and, second, was the book still a good read in the current day?

Entries range from masterpieces, such as Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, Nabokov's Lolita, and Potok's The Chosen, to such modern classics as Pat Conroy's The Great Santini, James Dickey's Deliverance, and Toni Morrison's Beloved. Organized chronologically by decade, offering anywhere from four to twenty-five chosen novels for each decade, Eleanor's notes on these distinguished books will make you want to rediscover, or read for the first time, the key ingredients to what made these books claim the title "best" of the past 100 years.
