    Book Description

The Mediterranean climate, with its mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, gave rise to a gardening style that is very much in vogue today. Not only do Mediterranean-style gardens offer gorgeous, fragrant, soothing sanctuaries that are wonderfully easy to maintain, but water-saving planting is environmentally sound and enormously appealing whatever one's region or climatic zone. This lush, seductive volume showcases the distinctive beauty of some 25 gardens in France, Italy, Spain, and California that employ drought-tolerant plants such as agaves and other succulents, wisteria, lavenders, geraniums, and even some roses-and design features such as terraces, arbors, hedges, pergolas, topiary, statuary, decorative tile, and terra-cotta containers-that are hallmarks of the sun-drenched garden aesthetic.

Lucinda Lewis's 200 color photographs, made especially for this book, take the reader through a variety of private and public gardens, some grand and some intimate, while extended captions provide the practical information that gardeners want to know, as well as design ideas that will help them create their own place of escape or enchantment.

5 out of 5 stars olive grove in greece.......2007-08-07

Having bought an olive grove in greece, we are now setting about making a garden and found that this book gave us lots of ideas and enjoyed it thoroughly. It will be read a lot.

    5 out of 5 stars Vibrating Sun-Drenched Gardens.......2007-05-26

Sunshine is the most defining element of a mediterranean garden. Pliny the Younger (AD 61-113) wrote of the detached room in his own garden with its cool marble floors. It was open on all sides and covered with vines. He loved to rest in the airy green shade.

In a bright and arid climate, the contrasts provide a breathtaking visual and sensory experience that this book passionately and successfully conveys.

It features ideas such as those based on a French tese with a shady tunnel of green clipped shrubs that function as doorways to sequential rooms, - Italian gardens sliced out of terracing and covered with alluring ancient pietra dura, - niches with terra-cotta figures, grottos, and Southern Californian water features.

The lavishly, and skillfully photographed book is divided into chapters that demonstrate how to achieve the mediterranean look in plantings, introduce shade and water features, create structure with various types of enclosures, design with clipped and pruned greenery, and adroitly use gravel, stone, and other paving materials instead of lawns.

The book is an inspiration and sensory delight.

4 out of 5 stars Good reference book. Wide spectrum of gardens shown.......2005-11-03

This book is serving as a good reference material for me. Living in the a sub-tropical region, where water is short and the hot/dry season is similar to a mediterrean climate I have been successfully using some of the garden ideas to landscape my own garden. I would recommend this book for the garden enthusiast who wants to start a garden where the soil is not idea and water is scarce, or just for some
one who wishes to grow plants which will thrive in subtropical regions.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of the mediterranean garden.......2005-03-09

Living in Colorado, sun-drenched, low-water gardens are pretty much required (at least in my yard: I have about 10 sq. ft. of shade). This book provides an attractive overview of the Mediterranean garden style using some textual descriptions and many photos, with an emphasis on pics of Italian and southern California gardens. Even though many of the classic Mediterranean garden plants are not hardy for me, this book is still useful for studying the structure and design elements of a Mediterranean garden. My only complaint is that the photos appear washed out. I'm sure this was deliberate --- these are "sun-drenched" gardens, after all --- but it makes the detailed structure and the individual plants difficult to discern.

4 out of 5 stars Defines the Aesthetic.......2004-02-26

This an important work for those concerned with garden design. There are many examples of the Mediterranean Style, with emphasis on French, Italian, and Californian interpretations. The volume is light on text and heavy on pictures (and they are of exceptional quality). At times, the captions neglect to inform the reader of the dominant plant's identity. This is a good introductory volume for the hobbyist and would be a valuable tool for designers to use with clients to clarify and illustrate the style. Great advocacy for use of drought tolerant plants.

5 out of 5 stars Great ideas for the Med........2005-09-18

Gildermeister goes into detail on several subjects when doing gardening in Mediterranean climates. This book is a great complementary book to her book "Mediterranean Gardening" because it expands on some of the ideas she fist presents in that book but, "Gardening the Mediterranean Way" stands well alone because it looks at specific gardening situation in such a way that the reader will not find it lacking. This is a delightful book that gives both novice and expereinced gardener a better understanting of med. gardening. The book has wonderful illustrations, photos and great ideas that, in her own words, makes one's garden a 'personal Eden'.

              Product Description

What is the importance of carbon on Earth?

Carbon is the chemical element that is the main building block of living organic matter.

It is essential in all biological processes and in a great variety of mineral and inorganic processes near the EarthÆs surface.

In the form of carbon dioxide, it is a greenhouse gas and its atmospheric concentration is demonstrably tied to climate.

Its recent growth in the atmosphere due to human activities is believed to be responsible for the enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming of the Earth.

The title of this book, Carbon in the Outer Shell of the Earth, conveys our view that the naturally occurring chemical compounds of carbon and, in particular, carbon dioxide always played an environmentally important role in the different parts of the Earth that comprise its outer shell, from the base of the lithosphere, -150 km below the surface, to an altitude of about +30 km. The outer shell includes the lower atmosphere, continental, subsurface, and oceanic waters, the biosphere, and the minerals in the sedimentary and crystalline lithosphere.

                  Book Description

The book introduces the topic of geochemical modeling of fluids in subsurface and hydrothermal systems. The intention is to serve as a textbook for graduate students in aqueous, environmental and groundwater geochemistry, despite the fact that its focus is on the special topic of geochemistry in hydrothermal systems, it also provides new insights for experienced researchers with respect to the topic of reactive transport. The overall purpose is to give the reader an understanding of the processes that control the chemical composition of waters in hydrothermal systems and to highlight the interfaces between chemistry, geothermics and hydrogeology.

                  From the reviews:

"..is a nice, compact introduction to the principles of modeling coupled fluid flow and fluid-mineral reactions in active geothermal systems, as used for heating and electricity generation." ( Christoph A. Heinrich, ECONOMIC GEOLOGY, June 2004)

This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A596023. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Accurate and reliable prediction of macromolecular structures has eluded researchers for nearly 40 years. Prediction via energy minimization assumes the native conformation has the globally minimal energy potential. An exhaustive search is impossible since for molecules of normal size, the size of the search space exceeds the size of the universe. Domain knowledge sources, such as the Brookhaven PDB can be mined for constraints to limit the search space. Genetic algorithms (GAs) are stochastic, population based, search algorithms of polynomial (P) time complexity that can produce semi-optimal solutions for problems of nondeterministic polynomial (NP) time complexity such as PSP. Three three refined GAs are presented: A farming model parallel hybrid GA (PHGA) preserves the effectiveness of the serial algorithm with substantial speed up. Portability across distributed and MPP platforms is accomplished with the Message Passing Interface (MPI) communications standard. A Real-valved GA system, real-valued Genetic Algorithm, Limited by constraints (REGAL), exploiting domain knowledge. Experiments with the pentapeptide Met-enkephalin have identified conformers with lower energies (CHARMM) than the accepted optimal conformer (Scheraga, et al), -31.98 vs -28.96 kcals/mol. Analysis of exogenous parameters yields additional insight into performance. A parallel version (Para-REGAL), an island model modified to allow different active constraints in the distributed subpopulations and novel concepts of Probability of Migration and Probability of Complete Migration.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A054693. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The innovative idea of distributing the functionality of current larger satellites among smaller, cooperative satellites has been sincerely considered for assorted space missions to accomplish goals that are not possible or very difficult to do with a single satellite. Additionally, the utilization of smaller satellites is maximized within formations and clusters to conduct missions such as interferometry and earth-sensing. This paper presents a methodology to describe, populate and analyze numerous formation designs employing the use of Hill's equations of motion to describe a formation's dynamics. These equations of motion are then programmed into a MATLAB code to produce Cartesian elements for input into a Satellite Tool Kit(Trademark) (STK) simulation that demonstrates numerous possible cluster formation designs. These simulations are then used to determine delta V requirements for overcoming LEO- type perturbations that were modeled within STK's High Precision Orbit Propagator (HPOP). Finally, components from two subsystems Attitude Determination and Control (ADCS) and Propulsion, using the delta V calculations from the simulation analysis and current advances in MicroElectroMechanical systems (MEMs) and nanosatellite technology, are presented based on a mass constraint of 10kg for the entire satellite.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Both locally (San Francisco Bay Area) and nationally, evidence is mounting that particulate matter poses a serious health risk. Locally, concentrations of 10 micron particles are highest on cold nights, during the months of December and January. Analysis of the composition of these 10 micron particles suggests that a large percentage is wood smoke. Currently, there are no adequate ways to estimate the number of lit fireplaces on a given night. NASA Ames Research Center, the Naval Postgraduate School and San Francisco Bay Area Air Quality Management District performed a joint research project to determine the feasibility of using thermal imagery to detect lit fireplaces. This thesis addresses the use of an airborne multi-spectral remote sensing system to detect lit fireplaces. The focus will he on the remote sensing equipment used for fireplace detection, the development of the test plan, airborne data collection, ground truthing and data analysis.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A950724. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the effectiveness of the Indoor Simulated Marksmanship Trainer (ISMT) as a tool to train shooters in the fundamentals of marksmanship. Key concepts explored in the research are verification of skills transfer resulting from practice and the predictive value of simulated performance to proficiency at real task performance. There was no statistical difference in the scores of recruits trained in the ISMT versus a control group that was not trained in the ISMT. Scores on simulated firing were not a strong predictor of live fire performance. In a second experiment subjects were evaluated on their proficiency and improvement during un-coached practice at the task of simulated precision fire on a target at a simulated known distance of 300 yards from the shooters. After comparable amounts of practice in the ISMT, subjects who had not previously received formal marksmanship training failed to demonstrate levels of proficiency comparable to those subjects who had previously received formal marksmanship training in the military. Consequently, the research found no evidence to suggest the ISMT qualifies as a black box training apparatus capable of imparting skill through practice without the added presence of expert instruction or an existing knowledge of marksmanship techniques.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating, Fun Collection for lovers of proverbs and Japanese Culture.......2006-02-09

What does "the ocean does not choose its trash" mean? When might you advise a friend that "beans grow even in the shade"? Have you ever observed that "the more you wear, the colder you feel?" Where might you tell yourself, "nothing if not seven habits"?

This concise collection combines 100 earthy Japanese proverbs with vivid pen and ink drawings that invites readers to speculate on the exact meaning of each poetic phrase. Each proverb also has a pronunciation guide above the proverb, and the equivalent Western expression listed in the back.

Intelligently organized and beautifully displayed, this small collection stands out in my small library of proverbs as a precious find. While some proverbs can easily be guessed giving them a more universal and perhaps practical appeal, I appreciated the number of paradoxical proverbs that made me think.

Proverb addicts, students of Japanese culture, and tourists will find "Even a Stone Buddha Can Talk" a fascinating, fun book. A wonderful gift for friends studying Japanese or planning a trip to Japan.

PS. If you want to know the answers to the questions posed in the first paragraph, I suggest that you buy the book!
