this class is rediculous. its hard and most likely you will get a one on the exam. no worries. the book helps, but i'm too lazy to read it.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!.......2006-07-07

I took AP Biology in my sophmore year. Over the year in the Biology class, I hardly understood anything and had many difficulties. I did not learn much biology in the class because my teacher apparently did not know how to teach and I'm not sure if she knew what she was talking about. Time passed by and I knew that the AP exam was coming up and that in order to do well on it, I had to study myself. Three weeks before the exam, I started studying . I bought this book and finished it off in a week. I then read the Princeton Review AP Biology book, which was not nearly as helpful as this one was. I finished off by reading the Cliff Notes AP Biology which was slightly better than this book. Anyway, thanks to all that reading, I got a 5!

This book has excellent practice questions and practice exams. The section after each chapter was also helpful. My suggestion--get this book and the cliff notes ap biology book and that's all you need to ace the exam. You may also want to get one other book to get some extra practice. Good luck!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars GOOD.......2007-05-30

Very good prep, you will probably get a 3 or 4 just reading this book cover to cover. It has good uncomplicated review. If possible buy Cliffs too and use both. They go hand in hand.

3 out of 5 stars Poor in diagrams.......2006-04-28

If you don't want to refer back to your school textbook for each topic as you are going through your AP book, don't buy Barron's. This book includes half of the necessary diagrams. You may have to imagine what a mitotic spindle is and what shape the cell takes at each stage of mitosis, because no diagrams are included in the mitosis section! Same with other topics. I already know most of the AP Biology topics, so I am only reviewing, however I still have to have my school textbook ready every time I open Barron's. My suggestion, buy it only if you have always been a good biology student and you need the questions, not the subject review part of the book.

4 out of 5 stars This book is a winner as long as..........2005-12-30

...you have already checked out the Princeton Review and Cliffsnotes books. Much of the material is presented in an extremely comprehensive organized manner, with GREAT diagrammatical representations (fancy for "picures"), especially for Cell Respiration. I KNOW that people have various learning styles, so be sure to check out the P.R. and Cliffs books. P.R. is more "in your face" (with their aggressive test-taking strategies, etc.) tailored with humor so if you are that kind of learner, then go with the Princeton Review. Cliffsnotes has some of the best review sections, with great diagrams as well. Barron's has no humor in their books, and takes a more "plain-ol'-science approach", while offering the best organization on the market. Another great thing about this book is FOUR practice exams at the end of the book BUT they arent written in College Board format, though it contains pretty similar content. Just keep these pointers in mind when choosing what book to help you ace the AP exam. Peace and good luck

5 out of 5 stars not as bad as they say it is.......2005-12-24

people always say the cliffnotes version is better, but that's not entirely true. This one is much more organized and has lots of graphics. I am using both to study for my unit exams, and i have a 97% in the class. don't bother with the textbook because it's long and impossible to comprehend.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2005-09-12

This book was so helpful for me. I bought it for summer review and it was SO worth it. Unlike text books it gets right to the point and it was very easy to use and read. I haven't tooken my IB test yet but I know I will use this book for studying!

3 out of 5 stars Good but some very important material missing.......2003-11-04

This book was basically all I used to prepare for the AP Biology exam--my school didn't offer the course, so I did an independant study. The book did a great job condensing all of the information and making it quite understandable. If that was all I was considering, I would have given the book five stars. However, when I took the AP Biology Exam in May 2003, one of the four free response questions dealt entirely with the chi-square statistical test--something not even MENTIONED in this book. Although I had done quite a few practice tests and used websites that had preparation for this exam, the chi-square test was never even remotedly mentioned in this book or elsewhere. While this book claims to list all of the possible topics covered on the test, be careful, as you could be in the same place as me, relying solely on this book to prepare for the exam. Just know that this book DOES NOT cover all testable material. On a better note, this book did help me pass this test, I just wasn't able to achieve that "5" I'd been hoping for--moral of this story, it's a great book, buy it, study it, prepare with it--just don't use it as your sole source of knowledge for the exam preparation.

        Book Description

Earth science comes alive for children 6 to 9 through 60 engrossing games, activities, and experiments. Kids “core sample” a filled cupcake and discover plate tectonics by floating graham cracker continents on a molten mantle of molasses. They learn how heat changes rocks by seeing how separate ingredients disappear when they bake Rice Krispie Treats. More activities show what causes earthquakes and what kinds of buildings resist their force. Growing sugar and salt crystals, “fossilizing” plastic insects, and modeling a variety of volcanoes add to the learning and the fun. Eight of the activities are tasty as well as informative. Silly songs help children remember new words and concepts, and a resource section gives inexpensive sources for rocks, minerals, and fossils. All the projects have been tested in homes and schools to make sure they are safe, effective, and fun.

          Book Description

This volume combines an illustration of the theory of tensors and the foundations of continuum mechanics. Firstly, a detailed tensor analysis is developed in Cartesian and general coordinates. Definitions, propositions, and examples relative to operations on tensors, canonical isomorphism, Euclidean vector spaces, exterior algebra, point spaces, metric element, Christoffel symbols, covariant and absolute derivatives, adjoint, differential operators, and many other concepts are introduced in a rigorous and practical way. The topic is not merely viewed as an autonomous mathematical discipline, but as a preparation for theories of physics such as general relativity theory, fluid-dynamics, engineering, and differential geometry. Secondly, developed in symbiosis with tensor analysis, continuum mechanics thoroughly covers Lagrangian and Eulerian descriptions, deformations, kinematics of continua, fundamental laws, principle of virtual work, linear elasticity and more. This work lays the groundwork for more technical subjects as strength of materials, plasticity, viscoelasticity, and nonlinear continuum mechanics. The material is presented with great pedagogical care, a summary of formulae and a glossary of symbols are provided, as well as ninety-five solved problems. The book is suitable as a text for third year students of mathematics, physics and engineering, and for anyone wishing to acquire insight into the mathematics of mechanics, the mathematics of physics, the mathematics of engineering, continuum mechanics, elasticity and viscoelasticity, linear and multilinear algebra, or matrix theory.

          Book Description

Vectors and Tensors in Engineering and Physics develops the calculus of tensor fields and uses this mathematics to model the physical world. This new edition includes expanded derivations and solutions, and new applications. The book provides equations for predicting: the rotations of gyroscopes and other axisymmetric solids, derived from Euler's equations for the motion of rigid bodies; the temperature decays in quenched forgings, derived from the heat equation; the deformed shapes of twisted rods and bent beams, derived from the Navier equations of elasticity; the flow fields in cylindrical pipes, derived from the Navier-Stokes equations of fluid mechanics; the trajectories of celestial objects, derived from both Newton's and Einstein's theories of gravitation; the electromagnetic fields of stationary and moving charged particles, derived from Maxwell's equations; the stress in the skin when it is stretched, derived from the mechanics of curved membranes; the effects of motion and gravitation upon the times of clocks, derived from the special and general theories of relativity. The book also features over 100 illustrations, complete solutions to over 400 examples and problems, Cartesian components, general components, and components-free notations, lists of notations used by other authors, boxes to highlight key equations, historical notes, and an extensive bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introductory book on tensors.......2000-12-11

I've not come across another book that introduces tensors successfully to non-mathematics graduates. It would not be easy to appreciate and comprehend every part of the book as it covers a wide range of physics & engineering applications. (not many of us are experts in all fields) However, the book is an excellent platform to start learning about tensors, after which one can go on to read the classics on tensors. I'd recommend the book to any senior or graduate engineering student (physics and maths students might find the book "less challenging").

4 out of 5 stars Vectors and tensors in engineering and physics.......2000-04-02

It's a good-level book in tensors' algebra and calculus. Besides, physical examples help you better understand the mathematical concepts. On the other hand, I think it does not have enough applications about vector calculus (Frenet formulas, scalar potentials, Maxwell equations...).I would have also preffered it to contain more about general tensor theory: pseudotensors, curvilineal coordinates, and also about Riemann spaces. Despite this, it's an excellent book where you can see mathematics aplied to science; this is the important thing for physicist and engineers

            Book Description

This book focuses on the requirements of a specific group of readers, structuring the book so that calculus is presented as a single subject rather than a collection of topics. With a user-friendly approach that keeps the reader in mind, the material is organized so that vector calculus is thoroughly covered. Approaches the theoretical aspects of calculus with the belief that, at the introductory level, it is important to understand the geometric basis for theorems and develop an intuitive understanding for the statements of the theorems and their implications. Emphasizes the power of calculus as a tool for modeling complex physical problems in order to present the methods of differentiation and integration as necessary skills needed to solve problems that arise from mathematical models. Excellent as a refresher for those in fields requiring a strong mathematical background.

            Book Description

An indispensable reference tool for engineers, mathematicians, and physicists, this book offers details on previously unpublished methods of treating and presenting vector and dyadic analysis. Along with pointing out various fundamental misunderstandings in the presentation of concepts to
date, Tai presents original findings on a new symbolic method with the aid of a symbolic vector. Additional features include: detailed derivations of theorems identities; coverage of new topics such as surface vector analysis and dyadic analysis; and a concise but rigorous treatment of a symbolic
            vector.

5 out of 5 stars long awaited book.......2001-12-29

If you ever came across the need of expressing vector operators in curvilinear coordinates, while writing numerical codes or solving PDEs in generalised coordinates, then you might have felt the need of a rigourous presentation of the subject.
Rigorous yet usable, I would say. This is not a book for pure mathematicians (the theorem you need is at pag. 435 consisting of one line saying the proof follows from the 2000 previous Lemma-theorem-corollary scattered all around...). The author has the physical problems well in his mind (he's Emeritus at Univ of Michigan, dept of Electrical Engineering) and makes frequent references to where in physics or geometry you will encounter such mathematical entities.
Chapter 8, devoted to the history of vector analysis, makes you clear why you haven't been able to find a neat rigorous presentation so far. This digression (I'm reluctant to use this expression for it's not a minor chapter in my opinion) gives you an even sharper feeling of what's the core of the matter by comparing critically different approaches.
The first introductory chapters on geometry, coordinate systems, dyadics provide a sound general background, presenting derivatives of vectors in generalised coordinate system from the beginning, resulting in a powerful and unifying exposition of the matter. All is extremely clear, a characteristic of the book in its whole.
The author always stress upon the transformation properties of the objects which have been defined, thus clarifying their meaning and mathematical character.
The appendix on vector analysis in the special theory of relativity is enjoyable and makes you clear how E and B can be treated as vectors even if they transform like the components of a tensor (OK, you already knew that, but you were using tensor analysis from the start, didn't you?).
There is much more in this book, which I would suggest to keep as a reference to any physicist, applied mathematician, biologist, engineer, numerical people and (even!) mathematician (developing communication skills...). First years students, which are always a bit confused on why one should use vectors at all and having accepted that think that everything is a vector, which is not, should definitely start with this book. Next time I will be asked to teach anything related to mechanics, I will adopt this book for the fundamental mathematics (but also check the excellent Biscari-Poggi-Virga Mechanics Notebook, 1999 Liguori ed. Napoli (IT) ).
It's also an excellent way to approach what you want next, which is likely to be tensor analysis which this book, unfortunately, cannot cover (can you hear me, Professor Tai?...).

              Book Description

This book emerged from courses taught at the University College of Dublin, Carnegie-Mellon University and mostly at Simon Fraser University. This is a modern introduction to the theory of tensor algebra and tensor analysis. It discusses tensor algebra in Chapters 1 and 2. Differential manifold is introduced in Chapter 3. Tensor analysis, differential forms, connection forms, and curvature tensor are discussed in Chapter 4. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 investigate in great detail Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian manifolds. Throughout the book, examples and problems are furnished from the theory of relativity and continuum mechanics.

The extensive presentation of mathematical tools, examples and problems make this book a unique text for the pursuit of both the mathematical relativity theory and continuum mechanics.

                Book Description

This text is an introduction to the use of vectors in a wide range of undergraduate disciplines. It is written specifically to match the level of experience and mathematical qualifications of students entering undergraduate and Higher National programmes and it assumes only a minimum of mathematical background on the part of the reader. Basic mathematics underlying the use of vectors is covered, and the text goes from fundamental concepts up to the level of first-year examination questions in engineering and physics. The material treated includes electromagnetic waves, alternating current, rotating fields, mechanisms, simple harmonic motion and vibrating systems. There are examples and exercises and the book contains many clear diagrams to complement the text. The provision of examples allows the student to become proficient in problem solving and the application of the material to a range of applications from science and engineering demonstrates the versatility of vector algebra as an analytical tool.

When I picked this book up in my school library I was sceptical, I was expecting it to be an over passionate look at some minor blip on the radar of history. I was wrong. 'The Silent and the Damned' brought to light a monstrous double crime and put it in context, without diminishing importance of the case. It details the tragic murder of Mary Phagan, a young factory worker brutally slain in the early 1900s and of Leo Frank, the man unjustly accused of killing her, tried in an atmosphere of anti-Semitism and mob rule, and his subsequent lynching. The book presents the facts of the case with fairness and attention to detail and looks at the case from several angles. This is one of the few books that has made me cry.
