Book Description
Fungi of Southern Australia is the fruit of a partnership between a leading mycologist and one of Australia's best botanical artists. One hundred and twenty five species of fungi are superbly illustrated in colour, in their natural surroundings, complemented by a detailed text and scientific line drawings. Comprehensive chapters describe what they are, where to find them, how to collect and study them and how to identify them. A special feature is a glossary cross-referenced to illustrations in the text, adding to the book's utility for scientists, naturalists, teachers, artists and others.

Description:
A large-scale ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungus inoculation program was conducted in plantation forest tree nurseries in Australia and China over a period of 2 years. These experiments used a wide diversity of fungi (90 isolates belonging to 23 genera), most of which were obtained from Australian eucalyptus plantations or forests. These trials compared the effectiveness of mycelial slurries (homogenised liquid fungal cultures) and spore suspensions (ground dried fruit bodies) as inoculum forms in nurseries with widely differing management regimes. The success rate of inoculation was moderate, regardless of nursery management regime (38% overall). However, there were substantial differences in overall performance between fungal genera, with agaricoid genera, such as Descolea and Laccaria, and hypogeous (truffle-like) fungi performing better than sequestrate genera, such as Pisolithus and Scleroderma. Comparison of congeneric fungal isolates from different climatic regions did not show significant differences in the performance of fungi from regions where climatic conditions were most similar to nursery conditions relative to those from disparate climatic regions (tropical, temperate, or mediterranean). There was a higher overall success rate for inoculation with spore suspensions (49%) than for mycelial slurries obtained from liquid cultures (35%). Spore-based inoculum was also easier to use and much less expensive to produce than mycelial slurries. It is recommended that future studies investigate the use of mixtures of fungi and attempt to optimise spore germination to increase the reliability of eucalypt seedling nursery inoculation. culation.

Medical Geology, Volume 2: Effects of Geological Environments on Human Health (Developments in Earth and Environmental Sciences)
ASIN: 0126363412 |
Book Description
This authoritative reference volume emphasizes the importance and interrelationships of geological processes to the health and diseases of humans and animals. Its accessible format fosters better communication between the health and geoscience communities by elucidating the geologic origins and flow of toxic elements in the environment that lead to human exposure through the consumption of food and water.
For example, problems of excess intake from drinking water have been encountered for several inorganic compounds, including fluoride in Africa and India; arsenic in certain areas of Argentina, Chile, and Taiwan; selenium in seleniferous areas in the U.S., Venezuela, and China; and nitrate in agricultural areas with heavy use of fertilizers. Environmental influences on vector borne diseases and stormflow water quality influences are also featured. Numerous examples of the environmental influences on human health from across the globe are also presented and discussed in this volume.

The bible, full of knowledge that will protect public health.......2005-03-22
There is nothing else that compares to this concise introduction to the subject. I have no doubt it will help to increase your awareness of the importance of the interaction of mammalian systems with our natural environment. Highly accessible and nicely illustrated -- it is evident that a team of dedicated medics and geoscientists invested long nights editing and minimizing jargon. For this the world should be thankful! This 800+ page full-color tome highlights some of the significant interfaces of medicine and earth science. Most of the topics are fascinating, such as Skinner's review of the 'Mineralogy of Bone'. If you forgot what geophagy is, look no further than Peter Abrahams chapter. So finally there is an accessible primer for medical schools, I might predict that several institutions will begin using Selinus for courses in medical geology. The book's organization has laid a nice foundation for this emerging transdisciplinary study. The seven editors and some 50 contributors should be congratulated for sharing a common vision to its fruition. At 12 cents a page, I love it!!!!
FYI - Lastly, you should be aware that there is another book published by L-severe that has the title 'Medical Geology' (by Komatina). It is not worth a nickel and should be recycled, as it was poorly translated and largely ambiguous and full of errors. The translator should be taken out to the back and shot.

Shakespeare Audio Style.......2005-04-15
This recording of Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Nights Dream"
is part of a series of recordings on the Naxos Audiobooks label.
Slowly they are putting together some very good to excellent
recordings of the plays and sonnets of the "Bard of Avon"
This recording perfectly captures the spirit of the play and
the music in the background brings a new feeling to the play.
All the perfoming versions of the plays released so far are based
on the Cambridge Shakespeare Edition. All can be easily
recommended.

Book Description
When Oberon, king of the fairies, uses his magic to cast a spell on four runaway lovers in a midsummer wood outside Athens, chaos ensues. The result is a lively and anarchic comedy, which can only be resolved by an elaborate disentangling of spells.

Avoid.......2005-08-07
Unlike every other entry in the Arkangel series, this chooses to depart from playing a strict interpretation of the work, and mysteriously features all of the Fairy characters with pronounced and often difficult to understand African accents. Its no doubt innovative and maybe even refreshing in a modernist way, but do not purchase this item if you are seeking a purist interpretation. Look instead at the Cadmeon series, which though much older and of slightly inferior production quality, delivers the goods the way its been delivered for 400 years already.
Book Description
Seven of Shakespeare's most celebrated plays have been specifically adapted to introduce young listeners (and reintroduce adults) to his works. Based on the homespun storytelling of a literary turn-of-the-century mom, these classic retellings capture the drama and flavor of each original play, while simplifying plot and detail. Winner of a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album for Children, included in this cassette version are: King Lear read by Jim Belushi, As You Like It read by Linda Hamilton, A Midsummer Night's Dream read by Robert Davi, Pericles read by Tate Donovan, Hamlet read by Bill Pullman, Romeo and Juliet read by Daphne Zuniga, and The Winter's Tale read by Patrick Macnee.
Customer Reviews:
Shakespeare for kids fun for any age.......2007-09-17
This book is loads of fun! I bought it for my third grader, who is taking a field trip to see "Romeo and Juliet." I wanted him to have some familiarity with the storyline so he wouldn't be yawning cluelessly by the end of Act I. He loved it so much he wanted to discuss it! Even my husband who hates to read the stuff enjoyed it.
In short, the book is well done. It shortens the plays into a very long story-summary without the dramatic language that can be somewhat of a distraction. We're not talking Cliff's Notes here folks. This is just a handful of pages per play written on a level anyone can understand and enjoy. The book is not long so it's not intimidating. (Have you seen any books containing Shakespeare's complete works, lately? Mine could be used for a doorstop! It's huge!)
We paired this book with the comedy of "The Reduced Shakespeare Company's" version of Romeo and Juliet. My son is actually looking forward to the trip!
Fantastic introduction to Shakespeare for younger children.......2004-03-21
I read and reread this book as a youth. The stories read much like classic fairy tales with tragedy, irony, and moral lessons. The writing is very accessible and encouraged me to seek out the full length "stories" in their original (play script) form once I was old enough (6th/7th grade) to really read them.
For a child who has a love of literature, these retellings of the great plays may start a life-long interest in Shakespeare's art (as they did for me).
Lorenzo Schiavo and Felipe Gravier.......2002-08-10
Romeo and Juliet
Felipe Gravier and Lorenzo Schiavo review:
We think that Romeo and Juliet tells the story of two star-crossed lovers whose families are in a terrible fight which prevents them from coming together. How far the couple will go to be together becomes the focus of the story. Of his richest poetry. The opening and closing choruses are some of his most outstanding work. Romeo's It is a brilliant love story but not much more. It still possesses however some wooing of Juliet is fabulously written. The Friar gets the best lines. Mercutio is one the best friends of Romeo. It is not as good as Shakespeare has written but it's still a fabulous book and up there with his best work. One part of the play we didn't like was that for the tow families get arrange there two kids had to die.
The English language wasn't finally finished so Shakespeare had the liberty to create words and play with the language, as he liked. That's why It was so difficult to understand what each character wanted to express so the teacher had to explain us each of that words and teach us all the words in that age and told us which were the words in the English of today.
Interesting Storys.......2000-06-24
This book provides lots of Shakespeare's Storys like "A Midsummer's Night Dream" and "Hamlet" with a children's fairy tale twist. The storys are the same as Shakespeare's, but easier for children to understand. My favorite story was Hamlet because I had just seen the play. A while after we read Children's Shakespeare and it helped me to understand Hamlet better.
Shakespeare is for children too!.......2000-06-19
Shakespeare is for kids and adults in E. Nesbit's creative mind. I always liked fairy tales, but I couldn't read Shakespeare very well. In Children's Shakespeare E. Nesbit turned his work into fairy tales without changing the story and morals. This book is not much like Nesbit's other books because it was written by Shakespeare, but I bet there are some simularities.
This book was a overall well writen book and I beleive E. Nesbit put a lot of hard work into her books in her life-time. I'm sure if she were alive now she would still be writing good books to this day.

Wonderful new audio version that everyone should own.......1998-08-21
Wow! Anyone who thinks Shakespeare is inaccessible should settle down with Arkangel's new series of the complete plays on audio tape. The most magical of the Bard's comedies sounds as if it's happening right in your living room! Better than Seinfeld -- better than Friends -- one of the best stories ever has been reinterpreted by a new generation of brilliant young actors, and made available to all. What a great introduction to Shakespeare. I can't wait for the rest of the plays to come out!
