        Book Description

The innovation and refinement of the techniques and concepts of sequence stratigraphy has been one of the most exciting and profound developments in geology over the past thirty years. Since then seismic stratigraphy has become one of the standard tools of the geoscientist, and there is a pressing need for an introductory text on sequence stratigraphy. This new book sets out to define and explain the concepts, principles and applications of this remarkably influential approach to the study of sedimentary strata. The authors take a rigorous objective stance in evaluating the techniques and interpretation of sequence stratigraphy - basing the text on an internal training course developed by BP.

        Book Description

This book provides a unique survey of the worldwide database of sequence stratigraphy, reviews the methods for describing sequences and assessing causes of sequence generation, and provides an in-depth analysis of the mechanisms of sequence development. The book reviews the present status of global cycle correlation and the hypothesis of global eustacy, and examines the applications of sequence stratigraphy to studies in practical petroleum geology. Students, lecturers, researchers, and practitioners are provided with a critical, but balanced, appraisal of modern concepts in this rapidly developing and controversial area. Ideas and concepts originating from a wide range of individuals and "schools" of thought are discussed and evaluated. A very extensive bibliography is included.

5 out of 5 stars Foundation for sequence stratigraphic analysis.......1998-11-30

This text, combined with the work by Vail et al. (AAPG, Memoir 26) and Haq et al. (Science, v235, pp 1156-1167) form the foundation for sequence stratigraphic analysis. Miall is a skeptic of most far-reaching sequence stratigraphic interpretations, but this book is modern (1997) and provides a balance treatment of the topic. While certianly not the only source for the study of sequence stratigraphy, it is a recommended addition to any library on the subject.

                    Book Description

In recent years there has been a huge expansion in studies using high resolution sequence stratigraphic techniques. Sequence stratigraphy has evolved from the original concepts of seismic stratigraphy to a scale above seismic resolution. Concepts developed at outcrop are now being successfully applied to sub-surface data sets and are providing a greatly improved understanding of facies geometries and reservoir architecture. This has resulted in the reappraisal of the geology of regions which have been studied for many decades and sequence stratigraphy has developed into a powerful, predictive facies analysis tool for both the hydrocarbon industry and academic research. The papers in this volume illustrate the depth and breadth of current sequence stratigraphic research. Studies are included on many aspects of sequence stratigraphy, from both outcrop and subsurface data with examples from a wide range of countries.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent selection of papers.......2005-12-09

This book contains about 20 papers pertaining to high resolution sequence stratigraphy, a tool used primarily by the oil industry for basin analysis and eustatic prediction. If you don't understand what that means, this book is very likely not for you...start with Coe's excellent "The Sedimentary Record of Sea-Level Change" instead, followed by the classic American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) Memoir 26. I personally found Armentrout's paper on the Plio-Pleistocene Gulf of Mexico biostratigraphy very pertinent; Figure 12, the Chronostratigraphic chart of Plio-Pleistocene depositional and biostratigraphic events is most useful.

4 out of 5 stars A Brief Interlude Between Two Towering Classics........2006-09-20

Nestled between the Cult of the Unwritten Book storyline and the Flex Mentallo/Pentagon epic, the storylines of "Down Paradise Way" offer a brief side-track. The Doom Patrol encounters alien civilizations locked in an endless war as they attempt to rescue Rhea (Lodestone), a former team member altered by the Gene Bomb (from DC's "Invasion" crossover). But what Rhea has become will shock you - and rock the Doom Patrol to their very core.

While not quite up to the impossibly high standards of the volume before and after it, "Down Paradise Way" still surpasses most of the comic-book fare out there, now or at the time it was published. Well worth the purchase price.

                      4 out of 5 stars Yep.......2006-06-17

I love Grant Morrison Doom Patrol soo much, but this one is not as good as Tha Painting that Ate Paris is. Buy that one first, then this one if you can.

The little bit at the beggining with them at group therapy is one of my favorites though. Danny the Street is cool, but maybe a bit too random w/o purpose, and the alien designs and overall story from Persephone onwards is really creative and cool, but lacks luster as far as the detials go.

                      I would recommend it though.

you can see morrison is still perfecting his craft at this early stage of his writing career.... not quite as good as the first two books....

                      4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-02-13

This story line is not my favorite from Grant Morrison's Doom Partol run, but it's still very good.

I gave up on comics around the time Grant quit Doom Patrol, Shade the Changing Man made it to issue 50 and The Sandman plodded to it's long winded end. While Preacher and the Invisibles were excellent series', nothing compares to Grant's Doom Patrol.

Fans of the strange should do themselves a favor and grab this book. Although I believe that The Painting That Ate Paris trade paperback is a superior collection.

Hopefully DC will continue to pound out these Doom Patrol collections.

                      Book Description

The dramatic lives of two bold, independent adventurers--Paul Gaugin and his grandmother Flora Tristan, a trail-blazing women's suffragist--as imagined by "one of the master storytellers of our time" (Chicago Tribune Book World)

In 1844, Flora Tristán embarked on a tour of France to campaign for workers' and women's rights. In 1891, her grandson Paul Gauguin set sail for Tahiti, determined to escape civilization and paint primitive masterpieces. Flora died before her grandson was born, but their travels and obsessions unfold side by side in this deft, utterly absorbing novel.

Flora, the illegitimate child of a wealthy Peruvian father and French mother, grows up in poverty, and after fleeing a brutal husband, journeys to Peru to demand her inheritance. On her return, she makes her name as a popular writer and a champion of the downtrodden, setting herself the arduous task of touring the French countryside to recruit members for her Workers' Union. Paul, struggling painter and stubborn visionary, abandons his wife and five children for life in the South Seas, where his dreams of paradise are poisoned by syphilis, the stifling forces of French colonialism, and a chronic lack of funds, though he has his pick of teenage Tahitian lovers and paints some of his greatest works.

Affectionate, astute, and quietly caustic, this double portrait is a rare study in passion and ambition, as well as the obstinate pursuit of greatness in the face of illness and death, from Mario Vargas Llosa, whose previous novels, The Feast of the Goat, "pushed the boundaries of the traditional historic novel [in] a book of harrowing power and lasting resonance" (The New York Times).

                      4 out of 5 stars One Goal.......2005-11-14

You probably already read some of the previous (great) reviews. I do agree with most of what was written so I will not be repeating that information. But I do give you a tip; buy, or borrow a book of Paul Gauguin's art, and read this novel watching the paintings. Then you will realize the great descriptions Mr. Llosa gives of the paintings and their meaning. It's Stunning.

As for the second person references, it isn't that anoying, although at the end they are a little too common; but somehow they give you a link with Flora and Paul, maybe an empathic link.

The characters are very well researched, realistic, with lots of flaws (like everyone) and hopes, past mistakes, glorious victories... but with one common goal - the search for paradise.

                      3 out of 5 stars Paradise.......2004-10-01

A book in the genre of "Agony and Ecstasy" and "Lust for Life", this part-fact and part-fiction story (or novel?) is based on the life of the painter Paul Gauguin and that of his grandmother Flora Tristan.

The book's chapters alternate between the lives of Gaugin and Tristan trying to draw a common thread between their seemingly uncommon lives.

Though Gauguin is obviously better known of the 2 characters, Llosa's novel does well to bring to light the life and work of his illustrious socialist grandmother who devoted her life to the upliftment of the women.

Each of the two central characters (adventurers in their own sense) are searching for paradise - the grandmother by trying to change the world and the grandson by escaping from his world. The question the reader is forced to ask is "Did both of them discover their respective paradises?"

An extremely fast and engrossing read though it took me three chapters to figure out the writers style of writing (referring to the characters in second person) and his oscillation between the events in the lives of the two protagonists. As always, I am sure the original untranslated version made a better read than the translated-into-English version.

                      5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2004-08-25

Excellent book, following the narrative style of "La fiesta del Chivo" but with a totally different topic, Vargas Llosa beautifully describes the thoughts and lives of two completely different minds but equally strong personalities (must be in their blood, as they are related): the painter Gauguin and his feminist/socialist grandmother Flora Tristan. And, if you like art, I think that Vargas Llosa makes a wonderful job describing the thoughts that originate some of Gauguin's paintings... it is just sublime. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of Vargas Llosa's Best.......2004-08-17

I am great fan of Vargas Llosa, having read all his novels. While others have criticized his style, I find it works exceptionally well in this particular novel. The non-linearity of each of the protagonist's stories adds to a much fuller understanding of Koke and Flora. You appreciate each more after learning what choices they made to become who they are, when you already know them in their "prime". Unlike many other reviewers, I found Vargas Llosa's style of interjecting comments by the protagonists added an itimacy and immediacy to the stories.
And now to do my own research on Flora and Paul....
For any of you who have not read Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter, it is perhaps his best and most enjoyable novel. Feast of the Goat also a great read. Though my personal favorite is The War at the End of the World, another historical novel, though about much more arcane subject.

                      3 out of 5 stars A false paradise.......2004-08-07

At first glance, The Way To Paradise is a classic example of Mario Vargas Llosa's style: interesting and unusual characters, colorful settings, poetic prose. The book even uses Mr. Vargas Llosa's preferred device of switching between narratives in alternating chapters as he did with such great success in Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter and The Feast of the Goat, among others.

But in the end, I think, the story falls well short of those other two wonderful books, for a variety of reasons that left me puzzled.

First, I'll add my name to the chorus of reviewers who were left confused by Mr. Vargas Llosa's decision to pepper his narrative with second-hand comments from the book's two main characters (especially with Flora Tristán, who seems to ask herself at least once every page something like "but you could not have known that, could you, Flora?").

More importantly, the style of alternating chapters between the story of Ms. Tristán, a 19th century social reformer, and her grandson Paul Gauguin, the painter, doesn't work nearly as well here as it does elsewhere. That is mostly because the two stories have very little to do with each other. Ms. Tristán and Mr. Gauguin were related -- though they never met each other -- but aside from a few passing and insignificant comments by Mr. Gauguin about his grandmother, one story line never crossed. Are you interested in the story of Ms. Tristán's epic battle to mobilize workers in France in the 1840s? Then read the odd-numbered chapters. Do you prefer the story of the famous painter of Tahiti and Tahitians around the turn of the 20th Century? Then skip the odd and read only the even-numbered installments.

The one common thread between the two narratives is hinted at in the title: in their own way, both Ms. Tristán and Mr. Gauguin spend their lives trying to reach a certain kind of paradise. In the case of the former, it's through trying to create a kind of workers' paradise in which women and laborers are protagonists. In the case of the latter, it is through fleeing the closed art world of Paris in the 1880s for the paradise of Tahiti, where Mr. Gauguin felt the savage and pure soul of mankind was still bare to see. But in the end, all both characters find is frustration and, of course, death.

Days after finishing the book, it is both characters' deaths that stick with me the most. Mr. Vargas Llosa describes their physical declines with horrible consistency. The biting and consuming gut pains that crippled Ms. Tristán upset my own stomach. And the periodic descriptions of the insects attracted to the foul-smelling puss dripping from Mr. Gauguin's syphilis sores more than once left a bitter scowl on my face.

Mr. Vargas Llosa does deserve kudos for the way he brings two distant and distinct historical characters to life, his second consecutive historical novel in which mounds of research make the actual history seem at once central and effortless. If you are a fan of Mr. Vargas Llosa's work, you'll no doubt find plenty to enjoy in The Way To Paradise. But to everyone else, I'd recommend one of the author's real top-shelf efforts. There are plenty to pick from.
