    Book Description

The Upper Paleolithic fossils of the Mladec caves, South Moravia, excavated at the end of the 19th century, hold a key position in the current discussion on modern human emergence within Europe and the fate of the Neanderthals. Although undoubtedly early modern humans - recently radio carbon dated to 31.000 years BP - their morphological variability and the presence of archaic features are indicative to some degree of regional Neanderthal ancestry. The beautifully illustrated monograph addresses - for the first time - the complete assemblage of the finds, including the human cranial, post cranial, teeth and jaw fragments of several individuals (most of them stored at the Natural History Museum Vienna) as well as the faunal remains and the archaeological objects. Leading scientists present their results, obtained with innovative techniques such as DNA analysis, 3D-morphometry and isotope analysis, which are of great importance for further discussions on both human evolution and archaeological issues.

      Book Description

This book examines a selection of philosophical issues in the context of specific episodes in the development of physical theories and presents scientific advances within their historical and philosophical contexts. Philosophical considerations have played an essential and ineliminable role in the actual practice of science. The book begins with some necessary introduction to the history of ancient and early modern science, but emphasizes the two great watersheds of twentieth-century physics: relativity and quantum mechanics. At times the term "construction" may seem more appropriate than "discovery" for the way theories have developed and, especially in later chapters, the discussion focuses on the influence of historical, philosophical and even social factors on the form and content of scientific theories.

5 out of 5 stars a very good reading .......2006-05-26

The perfect balance between physics and philosophy, getting to the social dimension of scientific quest its deserved place (usually ovelooked by many scientists, advocates of a (too) strong concept of rationality in science). I liked especially the chapters dedicated to modern physics, underdetermination and theory ladenness are really big problems for modern science, in no case are we entitled to underestimate them (I don't think that Bayesianism, objective or subjective, is enough to reject them). Overall a good reading, especially for those having some previous knowledge of physics, it shows clearly that one must go well beyond the usual cliche that science is only inductive and that we have enough probabilistic justification for the view that it surely approach at least approximate Truth.

      2 out of 5 stars Lots of Physics...No Philosophy.......2006-03-27

This work reads more like a general overview of the history of ideas regarding the physical universe rather than a philosophical treatment of the ideas behind physics. The book merely presents in a linear fashion the major ideas that revolutionized our views of the physical world but goes no further than presenting the theories as matter of fact. There are no discussions into the interplay between the philosophy of ideas and the actual modeling of the physical world using the scientific method. It reads similar to Stephen Hawking's "On The Shoulders of Giants"(a much more interesting work).

4 out of 5 stars More like History of Physics.......2001-06-20

My be I was expecting more from the book based on the title of the book but after all I was satisfied. Author provides a good history of Physics from Greeks to Quantum Theory. In Quantum theory you feel some Philosophical discussions but otherwise it is a science book and a good one with formulas, schematics like a text book. What I liked most was the excerpts from the original writings as the author was making his point. Paragraph from Newton's, Kepler's , Maxwell's, Bohr's, Bell's writings, all those fellows. It is serious book and requires serious reading. Also there is good references for further readings.

4 out of 5 stars good historical overview.......2000-04-01

This book summarizes the history of scientific developments from antiquity to quantum physics. No prior knowledge of science or philosophy is assumed, except the general high school education. The author is a physicist interested in philosophy, but the philosophical dimension of the book is much less obvious than the scientific-historical aspect. It is a clear and nice read, but it is physics rather than philosophy.

      Book Description

The first book to capture both the arms and family history of the old Irish Septs, and the newer 'settler' families from Scotland and England. Documented with Locations, Dates and Sources. The actual Color Coats of Arms and Blazons are included for many of the families, and many others are displayed in black and white exactly as they are found in the old works in the Irish Archives. Seats of power; forfeited arms; Extinct lines; Noble orders; Badges; and Peeresses are included, making this the most complete work of its kind.

4 out of 5 stars Irish Book of Arms.......2007-09-26

Overall this is a very good source on Irish heraldry dating back some time. True it is in black and white and the images seem to be scanned in from other sources, but that is precisely the point. It is a compilation of arms from several Irish sources scanned into one collection and alphabetized for the reader.

It is a worthwhile book for anyone interested in Irish armory at all levels and certainly aids those who do heraldic artwork, such as myself, in finding emblazons from long ago so future clients can create their own arms based off of, though different from, the existing arms of these names from specific places.

Overall I give it 4 out of 5 stars. The only reason it is not 5 out of 5 is that I wish the blazons for some of the arms, which are not included, would have been; i.e., the arms of the Tribes of Galway is an excellent feature, but the blazon for the crests and arms is not there ... you have to dig them out of the text where they are available there, though not all are.

5 out of 5 stars Proven original arms and families from the 1700's onwards!.......2002-09-17

This book has salvaged original arms from works as early as the 1700s in Ireland, and ties many of the arms to specific individuals - seldom done in other works. Some originals were from the 1700's, it is no wonder that they are not 'perfectly' glossy. They are very real. Those unfamiliar with the printing process may not understand that ink will fade over the centuries. All the originals have been reproduced exactly as they appeared in the dusty, salvaged volumes in the Irish Archives. Many appear nowhere else in print. Some novices may like arms that have been redrawn by a modern 'artist' in modern colors- this book includes over a hundred of those, but also includes hundreds of orginals that are found in no other work today- which makes it very unique

In addition - genealogy notes which appear nowhere else in print appear in several hundred entries. They name the holder of the arms, the name of father or descendant, and the SOURCE from which the information is taken, i.e. the Peerage of Ireland, The Irish Compendium, etc...dating back to 1722 a.d.. It is, bar none, the largest collection of Irish arms with commentary.

In short, any serious student of Irish heraldry will appreciate this work and its historical context.

2 out of 5 stars Home printing at its worst.......2001-10-18

If you are thinking of buying this book, save your money. Neither the research into this subject nor the quality of the printing is worth it. The book appears to be a cut-and-paste collection of images that appeared in antique books. The quality is so poor that many of the black-and-white images are blurry (low resolution on computer scanner?)and show black lines at the edges like a poor photocopy. Nor is the book comprehensive. All in all this book seems to have been published at home....

      5 out of 5 stars Really Good.......2001-08-17

This book taught me alot. Nothing else explains the old Irish and also the families that settled in Ireland from Scotland, England and Wales etc... It includes the Roll of Arms for Irish septs..circa 1690 and also 300 years of Arms issued in Ireland under the British. Lots more to read, genaology notes can run from one sentence to serveral detailed paragraphs. I recommend it!

Do the traitors think, cried Wallace, "that by robbing Scotland of her annals, and of that stone, that they really deprive her of her palladium? Fools! fools! Scotland's history is in the memories of her sons; her palladium is in their hearts; and Edward may one day find that she remembers the victory of Largs, and needs not talismans to give her freedom."

5 out of 5 stars "God Armeth the Patriot".......2006-06-20

This classic should be read by all. It is a story of great courage and conviction, a story in which good brave men fight the scoundrels, and sweet strong ladies stand by their men. There is so much to be drawn from a book like this. I intend to read it several more times before my life is over and make it required reading for my children one day. We need more men as William Wallace and Robert the Bruce, boys such as the faithful Edwin, wives and daughters such as Isabelle and Helen. If Scottish Patriots filled the pews of our churches, the Church would rise up in a great way.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2005-12-01

I so enjoyed reading this book. It was beautifully written, although it took a little while to get used to the way they spoke then. It can not really be compared to the movie Braveheart, because although both the book and the movie are about William Wallace, the story line is different. This book is not just a quick way to learn the story line. You have to appreciate the old dialect, and the talent with which Jane Porter incorporated so much detail. This is truly a classic story and has become one of my favorite books.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but very long.......2005-07-13

I enjoyed Scottish Chiefs. The plot was interesting, and it certainly helped me really get to know William Wallace, the main character. The book was exciting and well-written. I would certainly recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about William Wallace, the Bruces, and Edward I of England. But Jane Porter, the author, was not perfectly historically accurate. She added in some new characters that probably never existed--like Helen Mar, for example. This turned out okay, but readers should not assume that this is a perfect biography of Wallace. One thing I really did not like was the way all the women in the book were constantly fainting for no reason. I'm not sure if this was really the way people were than, but it annoys me. also, Porter portrayed Wallace as an extremely perfect person, more like an angel that a human, which was certainly wrong. The book is also very long, and sometimes hard to follw. But it was good overall. Also, my mother, who read it to me, my brother, and my sister as a part of our home education this past year, said thast it was a difficult book to read out loud, aned that it was not as accurate historically as it could have been.

5 out of 5 stars Fine Family Fare.......2002-11-12

This tale of Scots resistance against English King Edward is essential to those who grew up with "Scots wha hae wi' Wallace bled" in their ears. Others may enjoy it more for its romance. What pleased me most was seeing the medieval (turn of 13th-14th century) history through the focus of the English author Jane Porter, whose text was published in 1809, and the 1921 edition's illustrations by N.C. Wyeth. Atheneum's reissue is well bound and printed; the book feels pleasant to the hand. Most of all, Porter's latinate sentences beg to be read aloud. Although sold for ages 9-12, the text would be difficult for many of my college freshmen. Lucky the child with a parent to read it aloud! Lucky the adult with a child to read it to, or, failing that, to have these 500+ pages on the bedside table to peruse at day's end.

3 out of 5 stars Horrible Story, Waaaaaaaay too much detail.......2002-06-21

I read Scottish Chiefs, and I swear, it was the most boring story I have ever read! (Don't get me wrong, I've read The Broken Arrow, which has 2004 pages, five times.)
For one thing, who gives a [heck] about "He wore the green and brown checkered kilt with silver brooch over his shoulder. He had his iron sword grasped in his iron fist in a grip so tight his knuckles turned white, etc.
Frankly, if you wish to read a book on medieval battles and action, read Broken Arrow or any other book about that kind of subject.
Mrs. Porter gives way too much detail. She manages to turn something like "Braveheart" into a book as boring and drab as a granola bar.
One more thing. WHERE IN THE HELL IS ALL THE OTHER CHARACTERS? She has totally gotten rid of John De Balliol (The former king of Scotland and one of the key players in the Scottosh War for Independence), Angus (William's brother) and several others.
If you want action, good drama, and romance, watch Legends of the Fall or hell, even an old flick like The Longest Day.

5 out of 5 stars A Lesson in the Importance of Genealogical Standards .......2007-05-27

      [..]
Mr. Murphy's book was a fascinating read, well written, thoroughly documented, and a devastating analysis of the failures of the Genealogical Office of Ireland to adequately regulate its own policies and practices when recognizing Gaelic chiefs, registering foreign arms, and granting and confirming arms. Mr. Murphy has, what I am sure is displeasing to his critics, the irritating habit of confronting absurd claims with brutal facts.

For years I have followed his efforts on rec.heraldry and his website to resolve the discrepancies created by the inadequacies of the Genealogical Office and its procedures when it came to recognizing Gaelic chiefs. His opponents in these efforts attack him with gusto, but their attacks are of the personal variety and not based on a critic of his genealogical methods or findings.

All-in-all I found it amazing that the Genealogical Office simply did not apply standard genealogical principles to review requests for the recognition of a Gaelic chiefs. These standards are customarily employed by registrars for hereditary patriotic societies here in the USA, like the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Society of Colonial Wars, etc., and are both well known and documented. This is simply inexcusable for an office purporting to be involved in the business of genealogy to ignore the principles of genealogy.

It is no wonder that the Genealogical Office's legal standing in the granting of arms is now in question given the shenanigans that went on in recent administrations. It is going to take decades for the Genealogical Office to recover from all this folly.
I did find references Mr. Murphy makes to himself in the text somewhat awkward at points, for instance, when he mentions the costs he incurred during his researches into false claims or the discrimination against him from the Genealogical Office. However, as he played a key role in the downfall of Terrence McCarthy and in reviewing the operations of the Genealogical Office, I can understand why he also plays so large a part in the story he has to tell.

In sum, I highly recommend this book as a sound warning to stick to standard genealogical practices, to avoid flights of ancestral fantasy, and as simply a good read about the exposure of genealogical fraud and folly.

As attacking Mr. Murphy appears to be a sporting event for some, and writing a positive review of his book might make me open to attacks, I think I should point out that I have no business, social, or other relationship with Mr. Murphy. I simply admire the man's work, his tenacity, and his determination to employ genealogical standards in the evaluation of claims. Ireland is indeed fortunate to have such a scrupulous and conscientious "self-appointed saviour of Irish genealogy."

4 out of 5 stars Demonstrates the importance of knowing and meditating on God's Word.......2007-05-26

I've been looking forward to reading this book for years ever since I read Bunyan's classis Pilgrim's Progress, I've wanted to read Grace Abounding to learn more about his incredible man of faith. I also recently read The Hidden Smile of God by John Piper who introduces the reader to three incredible men of God including Bunyan. So actually reading the journey of Bunyan himself in his own words was thrilled...but difficult at the same time. Bunyan struggled greatly with the concept of grace; he wrestled with understanding how God's grace could be sufficient to save a sinner as great as he. Grace Abounding is a peering into the soul of Bunyan as he goes through this deep personal battle wanting to believe that God was able to cleanse him of all unrighteousness, but constantly confronted with the holiness of the divine.

Just over half way through the book, Bunyan surrenders to the will of God in his life. He finally and fully grasp that the grace of God was truly sufficient. Then his heart is set aflame to share this grace with others and he becomes one of the great preachers and writers of all time, even though he goes on to spend a dozen years confined to prison for preaching contrary to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Personally, it was interesting to see the cultural battle Bunyan faced at the time looking back from my vantage 500 years later to see that America is the beneficiary of his great struggles with the prevailing church of the day. As Bunyan sat in prison, he wrote about the great journey from a metal worker to a pastor of the gospel of Christ - in allegory form for the Pilgrim's Progress and in autobiographical form in Grace Abounding.

I can understand why many believe this book is a classic - the thoughts and insights that Bunyan has into the Word of God were profound and significant. It was amazing to read how Scripture flowed through his mind irrigating every thought so that his life bore much fruit. I wouldn't recommend the book to a younger reader, it is a difficult read, but well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars Grace abounding is a great book.......2007-04-03

Grace Abounding....is an excellent autobiography of John Bunyan and his spiritual struggle to obtain assurance of his salvation in light if his belief that he had committed the unpardonable sin. Recommended to anyone who may be facing the same struggle with this question. Each paragraph of the text is numbered and, thus, it is easy to put the book down at any point and pick it back up later without losing train of thought. Since the book was written over 300 years ago, it is interesting to have insight into the thoughts of a Christian who lived during that time and to compare with current Christian thinking.

5 out of 5 stars There's hope for you too in God's Abounding Grace.......2004-08-04

A lot of us are familiar with John Bunyan as the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, whose influence in Christendom is second to the Bible. Bunyan was a preacher, a prolific writer and a shining saint for God. However when we read this book we find out that he was an atheist and infidel in his youth, enjoying sin and rebellious towards God. Inwardly he suffered from tormented nightmares of demons and judgment, but outwardly he went on pretty much as any other sinner, taking delight in sin and being the ringleader of mischief. Several times he nearly lost his life, and even though there were several close calls, still he did not turn to God. After his marriage, he participated in religious activities, went through the motions of attending church and generally lived as he pleased, each time successfully shrugging off pangs of guilt. One day, after church, while playing a sport, a voice seemed to call out to him from heaven to his soul, which said, "Wilt thou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" Bunyan was convinced it was the Lord Jesus looking down on him in displeasure. What follows details his sinking into despair, his desparate attempts at working his way into God's good graces, and his struggles with temptation and doubt. In a strange sort of way, it is comforting to read about Bunyan's struggles and identify with them because you can see how he turned out so greatly used by God. He rationalized, made excuses and tried every way to justify himself. Bunyan did not try to gloss over his motivations but gave an honest account of his struggles from avowed sinner, to religious hypocrite before he was finally converted. He describes in great detail his doubts and despair, his yearning to be converted to Jesus Christ, and then being assured of his salvation by reading the Bible and praying. Reading this book will help you realize how God's grace can abound and save even the most wretched of sinners and gives us abounding hope.

      5 out of 5 stars A great theologian.......2001-12-07

I can't say that I have read this book...yet, but what I can say is that anyone who endeavours to read any work of Dr. Haykin is in for a real treat. He was my prof. for Church History, and a man whom I am thoroughly impressed with. He is a humble, diplomatic, professional person with a strong heart for God and His glory.
His knowledge on Church History is incredible, especially his understanding of the Reformation, the Puritans, and the Particular Baptist movements. But he cannot be limited there even. I could literally listen to him speak for hours.
I strongly recommend anything by Dr. Haykin as you will become well informed on the topic that he writes about, whether it's Cromwell, Bunyon, Edwards or anyone else.

      God bless and enjoy.

      5 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT.......2001-05-03

The Pilgrim's Progress is the 2nd most famous book in the world. John Bunyan is a genious and the arguments in the book are very convincing and hard to deny. Anyone who believes in "free will" would be turned around if they read this book. It clearly explains that we do not choose God, He chooses us, or rather, he CHOSE us before the foundations of the world. Everything in his book is scriptual and I love it!
