Book Description
This book provides a broad and rich outline of the epigenetic mechanisms involved in cancer progression and the generation of metastasis. It describes the tumor suppressor genes undergoing transcriptional silencing by CpG island promoter hypermethylation in the different tumor types of the human anatomy and their association with tumoral behaviour. It also provides a comprehensive insightful look at the molecular players involved in DNA methylation, histone modification and chromatin remodelling complexes causing epigenetic lesions linked to the metastasic phenotypes. Finally, it explains how epigenetic lesions associated with cancer spreading can be targeted using new and potent chemotherapy drugs. The book is a state-of-the-art reference to all scientific researchers and clinicians interested in the understanding of the biological processes leading to tumor dissemination and to those that are keen to translate this knowledge to a better management of cancer patients. Each contributor is a specialist in their epigenetic area and their joint effort has created a unique view of the DNA methylation, histone and chromatin changes that define cancer metastasis.

Book Description
Epigenetic phenomena are increasingly recognized as having significant economic and medical relevance. For instance, certain human disease syndromes may be due to the inheritance of paternal-specific patterns of gene activity that are largely independent of DNA sequence. This book both assesses our current understanding of the molecular mechanisms that direct epigenetic phenomena, and discusses how future work should not only provide solutions for biotechnologists and medical researchers who are seeking to express genes, but should also uncover new and so far unexplored areas of molecular and cell biology. The authors use our extensive knowledge of basic transcriptional control as a foundation to explore the more complex and interesting levels at which genes can be regulated. They discuss the role of chromosomal domains in gene silencing, the parameters that determine the activity of transgenes in plants and animals, the host defence mechanisms that protect organisms from the danger of integrating foreign DNA into their chromosome, and the importance of genomic imprinting in development and human disease.

Customer Reviews:
Introduction to Groundwater Modeling.......2003-05-05
I found this text very valuable in explaining the differences between these two methods and how each handles the dependent variable (head) and its first derivative (flow). The text also discusses Laplaces equation, iterative methods including Gauss-Seidel/SOR. Chapters are dedicated to finite difference and finite element methods under steady-state and transient conditions. It also demonstrates how each element is handled separately using finite element method and then the equations are assembled into a conductance matrix.
This text is a very good complement to other modeling texts. However, if you want to learn how to set up your hydrogeologic conceptual model, what data is needed to develop a good model, how to choose your numerical model, verify, calibrate your model, interpret results and perform a post audit, this is not that text. For the purpose of model setup etc. I would recommend Applied Groundwater Modeling.
Outdated and of little value.......2001-12-09
I found this book somewhat outdated. Even though it was well-written if was of little value. There are several other books of better quality.
Highly recommended.......2000-03-31
I've used this book in two of my groundwater modeling classes. Despite the fact that it is a little outdated, it has the clearest explaination I've come across of the mathematics behind groundwater modeling. In addition, it contains very good example problems.
Book Description
The present textbook on nuclear structure takes a unique and complementary approach compared to existing texts on the topic. Avoiding complicated calculations and complex mathematical formalism, it explains nuclear structure by building on a few elementary physical ideas. Even such apparently intricate topics as shell model residual interactions, the Nilsson model, and the RPA analysis of collective vibrations are explained in a simple, intuitive way so that predictions can usually be made without calculations, essentially by inspection. Frequent comparison with data allows the relevance of theoretical approaches to be immediately evident. This edition includes new chapters on exotic nuclei and radioactive beams, and on correlations of collective observables. Completely new discussions are given of isospin, the shell model, nature of collective vibrations, multi-phonon states, superdeformation, bandmixing, geometric collective model, fermi gas model, basic properties of simple nuclear potentials, the deuteron, etc. With the amount of new material this new edition is essentially a new book.
Customer Reviews:
My advisor Dr. Mark A. Riley was right!.......2007-02-13
My PhD. advisor, Dr. Mark A. Riley, "strongly suggested" this book to me and he was right to do so. Dr. Casten's discussion of nuclear structure phenomina has been pivotal to my understanding of this topic. The field of nuclear structure can at first seem quite impenetrable but the manner in which Dr. Casten discusses this topic has made it much more accessible than many other texts that I have read. I consider it one of the most treasured books used in my nuclear physics education.

My students love this book!.......2006-06-30
This is a truly wonderful introductory text for anyone interested in or performing work in the domain of "low energy" nuclear physics. I strongly suggest (I don't like to insist) that my PhD students read closely through Dr. Casten's superb and insightful explanations concerning the magnificent variety of phenomena exhibited by the atomic nucleus. Without exception, ever since the first edition was published in 1990, my students have loved Casten's approach. They have even been known en-masse to "put their money where their mouth is" and have gone out and actually bought this book just so they can have their own copy always close at hand. It really is that good and that useful to them! Need one say more?
