Book Description
This book covers environmental chemistry, toxicology, and efficacy of biopesticides and certified organic pesticides. The book examine hazards of currently certified organic pesticides and potential exposures after use. The book will start with an overview of the process used by the National Organic Materials Standards Board to judge the acceptability of products for certification. The decision making process of the NOMSB will be compared to the risk assessment paradigm used for all pesticides. Biologically derived pesticides that are candidates for certified organic status will be discussed from the perspective of development, mode of action, and potential limitations to certification.
Book Description
This book presents an introduction to geostatistics stressing the multivariate aspects for scientists, engineers or statisticians. Geostatistics offers a variety of models, methods and techniques for the analysis, estimation and display of multivariate data distributed in space or time. This book presents a brief review of statistical concepts, a detailed introduction to linear geostatistics and an account of three basic methods of multivariate analysis. The third edition of this very successful textbook contains an advanced presentation of linear models for multivariate spatial or temporal data, of nonlinear models and methods for selection problems with change of suppport as well as an introduction to non-stationary geostatistics with special focus on the external drift method. Applications from very different areas of science, as well as exercises with solutions, are provided to help convey the general ideas.
Customer Reviews:

Description:
In this work the content of seven heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn) and other parameters (the pH, organic matter, carbonates and granulometric fraction) in agricultural topsoil in the Ebro basin are quantified, based on 624 samples collected according to an 8 by 8km square mesh. The average concentrations (mg/kg) obtained were: Cd 0.415+/-0.163, Cr 20.27+/-13.21, Cu 17.33+/-14.97, Ni 20.50+/-22.71, Pb 17.54+/-10.41, Zn 17.53+/-24.19 and Hg 35.6+/-42.05@mg/kg. The concentration levels are relatively low in areas of high pH and low organic matter content concentration. The results of factor analysis group Cd, Cu, Hg, Pb and Zn in F1 and Cr y Ni in F2. The spatial heavy metals component maps based on geostatistical analysis, show definite association of these factors with the soil parent material. The local anomalies (found in Cu, Zn and Pb) are attributed to anthropogenic influence.

Description:
Land evaluation is sensitive to the effects of variability of ecologically complex phenomena. A probability map incorporating some of these phenomena is proposed to account for local uncertainty of areas affected by soil degradation in the Apennines of south Italy. To be useful, a method for assessing soil degradation should integrate several kinds of data. We present here an overview of the geostatistical approach to solving this problem: non-linear estimation. The following factors have been considered: the soil erosion by water (geomorphologic indicator), the station aridity (bioclimate indicator), and top-soil depth (pedologic indicator). We convert the continuous data values of each variable at each location using a binary variable indicator transform based on critical thresholds. The indicator transform values for individual variables are then integrated to form multiple variable indicator transform (MVIT) to evaluate the degree of soil degradation. Areas suited to soil degradation maps delineated by geographical information system (GIS), showed that the joint probabilities of meeting specific criteria indicator Kriging were influenced by the critical threshold values used to transform each individual variable and the method of integration. So, the understanding of soil vulnerability to degradation is increased to providing a way to classify degraded regions. On the basis of this information different land uses strategies could be identified to develop sustainable assessment models of soils. For example, many countries of these disadvantaged areas, should have agro-forestation programmes that increase the heterogeneity in vegetation cover contrasting hydrological properties, thus promoting a self-regulating system for runoff and erosional soil degradation control.

Description:
Exposure characterization is a central step in Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA). Exposure level is a function of the spatial factors linking contaminants and receptors, yet exposure estimation models are traditionally non-spatial. Non-spatial models are prone to the adverse effects of spatial dependence: inflated variance and biased inferential procedures, which can result in unreliable and potentially misleading models. Such negative effects can be amended by spatial regression modelling: we propose an integration of geostatistics and multivariate spatial regression to compute efficient spatial regression parameters and to characterize exposure at under-sampled locations. The method is applied to estimate bioaccumulation models of organic and inorganic micropollutants in the tissues of the clam Tapes philipinarum. The models link bioaccumulation of micropollutants in clam tissue to a set of environmental variables sampled in the lagoon sediment. The Venetian lagoon case study exemplifies the problem of multiple variables sampled at different locations or spatial units: we propose and test an effective solution to this common and serious problem in environmental as well as socio-economic multivariate analysis.
Book Description
The Handbook's coverage of sensors is extensive, ranging from simple photodiodes to complex devices containing components in combination. It offers hard-to-find reference data on the properties of numerous materials and sensing elements and emphasizes devices that are less well-known, whose technology is still being refined, and whose use permits the measurement of variables that were previously inaccessible.

Book Description
This text presents a unified and up-to-date discussion of the role of atomic and molecular orbitals in chemistry, from the quantum mechanical foundations to recent developments and applications. Abundantly illustrated, the volume critically establishes the relationships between the more formal quantum mechanical formalisms and the traditional chemical descriptions of chemical bonding. It is mathematically less demanding than most traditional quantum chemistry texts, yet still retains clarity and rigor. This volume is an ideal textbook for any course in which chemistry is a significant part.

physical chemistry.......2005-04-22
I'm currently struggling through the quantum mechanics portion of a physical chemistry course. "Orbitals in Chemistry" is invaluable in explaining the concepts behind the complex derivations and cryptic explanations found in Levine's "Physical Chemistry". Nothing can make physical chemistry easy. This book included. But it is a book definitely written for students.
Easier to understand for chem students.......2004-07-31
To many chemistry students, orbitals are often things you just have to memorise. You take them as a given. This might arise because the students are often put off by the full blown quantum mechanical treatment in physics courses that might actually rigourously derive the orbitals. Either the chemistry students avoid those courses, or they have trouble following them.
Gil offers you an alternative. He strikes an intermediate note, by giving less mathematical formalism. But, especially through the well drawn diagrams, he shows clearly where the standard chemical orbitals come from, in quantum mechanics. Hopefully, students will have an easier with this.

Modern Technical Physics (6th Edition).......2005-10-02
I find the book to be a little dated and visually unappealing, but so far in my college course, I am doing well with it. The instructor is very comfortable with delivery of its contents and is skilled in getting the students to learn the concepts. I like the fact that the odd problem answers offer formulas along with the correct answers.
Excellent Physics Text.......2003-10-31
Modern Technical Physics is suitable for a technical physics course such as Electrical Engineering Technology students might take. It is exceptionally well written and straightforward.
BAD TEXTBOOK!`.......2001-01-28
I am currently using this book for a college physics course and I am very dissapointed in it. There equations given are difficult to understand becuase few or no example problems are given to show how to use the equation. Also, the answers in the back of the book seldom correlate well with the information given in the chapter. Finally, no solutions manual is provided with the book. Since the chapters themselves are lacking you'd think they would at least provide a solutions manual to help explain, but no. These and many other reasons make this book a poor choice. Shop around and find another one.
Modern Technical Physics...A poor excuse for a physics book........2000-04-20
Hmm...where do I start. This book is absolutely terrible. Just as one of the other reviewers of this text, I too was required to use this book in a college physics course. The book lacks in many aspects. The first problem is that this book is only black and white...there are no color illustrations--the use of color illustrations and pictures would be very helpful in illustrating and describing certain concepts. Also, the book is very lacking in example problems. The example problems shown in the book are nothing like the practice problems at the end of chapters. There are many cases in which a section of a chapter gives no example problems, yet at the end of the chapter there are practice problems for that particular section. Apparently Arthur Beiser doesn't realize that example problems are helpful and sometimes necessary to complete the end-of-chapter problems. All these factors, combined with the relatively high price, make this book an extremely bad choice for reference, or in my case, as a use as a collge physics text. If I could have given this book 0 stars I would have done so.
Terrible Physics book...DO NOT BUY!.......2000-02-15
I was required to use this book for Physics class in college and was extremely dissapointed with it. The problems explained in each chapter do not at all reflect the difficult problems in the end-of-chapter exercises. Also, this book is very weak in explaining vecor addition, which is a very important principle in Physics that is frequently required to do the end of chapter problems. All this, combined with weak illustrations, makes this a TERRIBLE book for anyone interested in learning physics. This book leads me to believe that Beiser is a terrible author. This book is not worth even the paper it's printed on...DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK!

Book Description
By delivering concentrated information in three different volumes, the editors of the Practical Aspects of Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry mini-series present in-depth reviews on mainstream developments in each active and popular area. Contributing authors provide concise reports illustrating successful approaches to difficult analytical problems across the basic scientific disciplines. Ion Trap Instrumentation, the second volume in the series, conveys an appreciation of the ion trap as a versatile instrument which is used successfully in research and in applications, often in tandem with other instruments or components, such as external ion sources and lasers. The book begins with a discussion of high resolution mass spectrometry and mass measurement accuracy. It then demonstrates that trajectories of high kinetic energy ions can be controlled so that such ions are confined. It provides applications of lasers to the study of trapped ions the laser photodissociation of gaseous ions confined within the ion trap. The book concludes with physics applications of the ion trap, in particular, the Penning trap and the Paul trap.

A book not just for "Sullen Baptists".......2007-08-28
Robert Flynn is a wonderful storyteller. The book contains essays that are sometimes laugh out funny, and sometimes deeply thought provoking. To be able to write both, and to find both in a single volume, is a treat.
People who grew up in religious homes -- whether or not they are from Texas or the South -- will find the humorous stories remind them of their experiences in some way. My impression is that Flynn writes with a deep appreciation for aspects of his religious heritage while also acknowledging its sometimes narrowmindedness. One needs to have an appreciation for one's past in order to appreciate more deeply their present.
Flynn doesn't come across as having all the answers. I like that. I like books that invite me to ponder the questions the author is thinking about, and more of my own.
