    Book Description

Backscattered scanning electron microscopy (BSE) reveals the minerals, textures, and fabrics of sediments and rocks in much greater detail than is possible with conventional optical microscopy. Backscattered Scanning Electron Microscopy provides a concise summary of the BSE technique. This comprehensive guide uses abundant images to illustrate the type of information BSE yields and the application of the technique to the study of sediments and sedimentary rocks. The authors review the use of this petrographic technique on all the major sedimentary rock types, including sediment grains, sandstones, shales, carbonate rocks, rock varnish, and glauconite. They also describe image analysis techniques that allow quantification of backscattered scanning electron microscope images. Heavily illustrated and lucidly written, this book will provide researchers and graduate students with the most current research on this important geological tool.

2 out of 5 stars Good book, bad reproduction.......2006-07-06

If you are going to buy this book, I strongly recommend spending the extra money on the hardcover addition. I have seen both, and the image reproduction in the softback addition is borderline criminal. Photocopies of the images in the hardcover would look better than the images in the softback. This is a book in large part about images and how to interpret them and having such poor reproductions of what were originally good images significantly detracts from the book's usefulness.

Although I give the paperback addition a 2 star rating due to the poor image reproduction, I would give the hardcover 4 or 5 stars. That version is an excellent review of BSE imaging of rocks by experts on the subject.

Perhaps a digital version with decent reproductions of the images will be available in the future.

    4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Test - 8yr old Grandson.......2000-06-28

I gave this book to my 8yr old Grandson on an outing with Grandma this past week. I handed it to him as we began our 35 min trip by car. He leafed slowly through the pages and for the next 20 mins. we discussed each image.

The author chose to color the images which makes it easier to identify each object relative to the text. And makes it fun to look at. However, one or two actual grayscale photos with arrows would have been nice. I kept wanting to explain to him that the carpet beetle wasn't really day-glo colors, etc. Hopefully, the next book out in hardcover will show a few real images. For the adults, I'll add that my engineer at home enjoyed the photos as well.

    Book Description

This book describes the important techniques of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), as used in many branches of geology, including mineralogy, petrology, palaeontology and sedimentology. Topics discussed include: principles of electron-target interactions, electron beam instrumentation, X-ray spectrometry, general principles of SEM image formation, production of X-ray ‘maps’ showing elemental distributions, procedures for qualitative and quantitative X-ray analysis (both energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive), the use of both 'true' electron microprobes and SEMs fitted with X-ray spectrometers, and practical matters such as sample preparation and treatment of results. Throughout, there is an emphasis on geological aspects not mentioned in similar books aimed at a more general readership. The book avoids unnecessary technical detail in order to be easily accessible to novices, and forms an up-to-date text on EMPA and SEM for geological postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, as well as those working in industrial laboratories.

This book is great for someone who has a little background in physics and calculus. It gives a good breakdown of how the probe works and what kinds of analyses it works best for. This is not an in-depth book on quatitative analyses, but rather, an excellent place to start!

              Book Description

Paleomagnetism is the study of the fossil magnetism in rocks. It has been paramount in determining that the continents have drifted over the surface of the Earth throughout geological time. The fossil magnetism preserved in the ocean floor has demonstrated how continental drift takes place through the process of sea-floor spreading. The methods and techniques used in paleomagnetic studies of continental rocks and of the ocean floor are described and then applied to determining horizontal movements of the Earth's crust over geological time. An up-to-date review of global paleomagnetic data enables 1000 million
years of Earth history to be summarized in terms of the drift of the major crustal blocks over the surface of the Earth.
The first edition of McElhinny's book was heralded as a "classic and definitive text." It thoroughly discussed the theory of geomagnetism, the geologic
reversals of the Earth's magnetic field, and the shifting of magnetic poles. In the 25 years since the highly successful first edition of Palaeomagnetism and Plate Tectonics (Cambridge, 1973) the many advances in the concepts, methodology, and insights into paleomagnetism warrant this new treatment. This completely updated and revised edition of Paleomagnetism: Continents and Oceans will be a welcome resource for a broad audience of earth scientists as well as laypeople curious about magnetism, paleogeography, geology, and plate tectonics.
Because the book is intended for a wide audience of geologists, geophysicists, and oceanographers, it balances the mathematical and descriptive aspects of each topic.

              * Details the theory and methodology of rock magnetism, with particular emphasis on intrepreting crustal movements from continental and oceanic measurements
              * Outlines Earth history for the past 1000 million years, from the Rodinia super-continent through its breakup and the formation of Gondwana to the formation and breakup of Pangea and the amalgamation of Eurasia
              * Provides a comprehensive treatment of oceanic paleomagnetism
              * Provides a set of color pateogeographic maps covering the past 250 million years
              * Written by two internationally recognized experts in the field

There was a desparate need for a book pitched at the general audience -- until now.

The 1st edition of McElhinny's book was heralded as a "classic and definitive text". It thoroughly discussed the theory of geomagnetism, the geologic reversals of the Earth's magnetic field, and the shifting of magnetic poles. In the 26 years since the highly successful first edition of Palaeomagnetism and Plate Tectonics (Cambridge, 1973) the many advances in the concepts, methodology, and insights into paleomagnetism warrant this new treatment. This completely updated and revised edition will be a welcome resource for a broad audience of earth scientists as well as laypeople curious about magnetism, paleogeography, geology, and plate tectonics.

I particularly enjoyed the set of Chris Scotese's color paleogeographic maps covering the past 250 million years.

                Book Description

The overall goal of this calculus-based text is to provide an introduction to physics with a modern point of view. It emphasizes the atomic nature of matter, macro-micro connections, and modeling complex physical systems. The approach is designed to go beyond low-level physics and to build upon readers' prior preparation.

The second volume deals with electricity and magnetism, and with physical optics in terms of the classical interaction of light and matter. Atomic models of matter are again a major theme. A key feature is the unified treatment of electrostatics and circuits in terms of electric field and microscopic models of matter.

                Book Description

The curriculum has been restructured so that students will have the necessary fundamental understanding of charges and fields before going on to more complex issues. Qualitative reasoning and quantitative analysis are discussed equally in order to provide a meaningful conceptual framework within which the quantitative work makes more sense. Atomic-level analysis is stressed and electrostatics and circuits are unified. Desktop experiments can be conducted at home or in the classroom and are tightly integrated with the theoretical treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Spoon Feeding EM.......2004-11-18

I like this book a lot as a lowed division physics introduction to electromagnetics. It's quite unique due to the interactive work that the reader is asked to do & to the thoroughness & "spoon feeding" of the subject material. It's clear that a lot of work & careful thought went into the writing of the book which results in a great starter text in what can be a rather difficult subject.

Apparently written by physicists to be used in a physical sciences curriculum, I'm sure anyone majoring in physics would be well served by this work. Speaking from the EE prospective, often it seems the required lower division physics classes include Newton's laws, machines, fluids, gases, heat & light, but a disproportionate small amount of fundamental electrical theory involving the electric & magnetic characteristic of matter. And when they do accent the electrical component, it usually includes delving into circuit analysis & design, which may not be the best way to spend a limited amount of time.

This book, as is stated in the preface "focuses on electric & magnetic interactions on the structure of mater". This is exactly what the EE needs so when they start their EE classes with Ohm's Law, they'll know where it came from. This book works through (with very little math) electric fields, forces & currents in matter, Coulomb' law, electric potential, what is voltage, Gauss's law, magnetic fields, forces & induction, Biot-Savart law, Faraday's law, inductors/capacitors & electromagnetic radiation including a integral set of Maxwell's equations. This is done while always relating back to what really going on inside the conductor regarding to the basic electric & magnetic fields.

Be aware, you are not likely to find a clean transition from this work into your upper division electromagnetic classes. The primary reason for this is the lack of math used here. Also this is a notorious subject for authors using "creative license" to attempt to present their work in a somewhat different form. And in some cases, even renaming classic equations & laws. So if you have been through your calculus including vector analysis & are comfortable with dot/cross products, divergence, gradient, curl, Laplacian, different coordinate systems & the differential form of Maxwell's equations, you may not need this book. But if not, use this work to get clear on the basic interaction of the electric & magnetic fields with mater & don't worry too much about the math now. But be aware, you'll see all this again in quite a different format, and maybe you'll have a better basic understand of what's going on in the circuits.

5 out of 5 stars The best theoretical explaination.......1999-11-10

This book has the best theoretical explainations for almost everytin regarding current, charge and magnetism. It goes to the very deep of what happens inside the wire when current flows throug it. U should have it !

                        Book Description

In the quest for higher data density in information technology manipulation of magnetization by other means than magnetic fields has become an important challenge. This lead to a startling revival of the magnetoelectric effect, which characterizes induction of a polarization by a magnetic field or of a magnetization by an electric field. The magnetoelectric crosslink of material properties opens just those degrees of freedom which are needed for the mutual control of magnetic and electric states.

The book gives a state-of-the-art review on magnetoelectrics research, classifies current research tendencies, and points out possible future trends. Novel compounds and growth techniques and new theoretical concepts for the understanding of magnetoelectric coupling phenomena are introduced. Highlights are the discovery of "gigantic" magnetoelectric effects which are strong enough to trigger electric or magnetic phase transitions; the concept of magnetochirality; and development "structural" magnetoelectric effects in artificial multiphase compounds. The book is addressed to condensed-matter physicists with a particular focus on experts in highly correlated systems.

This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A637553. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The objective of this thesis is two-fold. The first goal is to expand the operational capabilities of the Ship's Service Converter Module control algorithm for a DC-to-DC converter using the Universal Controller. The second goal is to investigate the use of the Universal Controller to implement a closed-loop control algorithm for an Auxiliary Resonant Commutated Pole (ARCP) power inverter. These power electronic devices are central to the development of a DC Zonal Electric Distribution System (DC ZEDS) that is scheduled for application in the twenty-first century surface combatant (SC-21). The development of appropriate control algorithms is a key element to this design process. The Universal Controller is a digital controller that was developed by personnel at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Annapolis, Maryland. The basic operation of the Universal Controller and the Texas Instrument TMS32OC3O microprocessor architecture are described, with emphasis placed on the system control algorithms. Previous studies have encoded and successfully tested a closed-loop control algorithm for a DC-to-DC converter. In this research endeavor, this control algorithm is expanded to include various protection circuits and a Master/Slave paralleling scheme. Finally, a closed-loop control algorithm for the ARCP inverter is encoded and recommendations for future research are outlined.

                                Book Description

Volume II/24 presents the spectroscopic data on diamagnetic and paramagnetic molecules as well as on molecular ions and radicals up to date considering the publications up to and partly including 1997. The spectroscopic information collected in this volume has been obtained principally from gas phase microwave measurements. In addition, gas phase data have been included derived from methods related to microwave spectroscopy by employing a coherent radiation source. These are molecular beam techniques, radio frequency spectroscopy, electron resonance spectroscopy, laser spectroscopy, double resonance and saturation techniques. Some other methods are considered if the accuracy of the derived molecular parameters is comparable to that of microwave spectroscopy owing to a good statistics in the analysis of data, and no microwave data are available. Examples would be Fourier infrared spectroscopy or laser induced fluorescence.

                                4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction.......2004-10-29

I had been trying to locate an edition of Chatterton's poems for quite awhile. This seems to be the only edition in print as of now, and though it is a relatively scant volume, I suppose it will suffice. It features a thorough biographical introduction, as well as explanatory notes. Essential for Romantic scholars and enthusiasts, but be aware of what you are ordering before you pay more than the cover price.
