Venice Against the Sea: A City Besieged

"Venice is in trouble," writes John Keahey. The city is sinking into the sea. It has lost six feet over the last millennium and soon will lose more. The problem has become so bad that hotel concierges routinely distribute rubber boots to guests, and tourists cross historic squares on elevated boardwalks. Long-time residents flee not only the rising water, but also the rising cost-of- living and the rising industrial pollution. Venice, according to Keahey, "is evolving into a crumbling museum." Once, of course, it was an economic powerhouse with global reach; later it became the repository of some of the finest art and architecture in the world. Now it's sinking, largely due to the remorseless facts of geography, but also because the city's residents have abused their underground water resources. In Venice Against the Sea, Keahey offers a detailed description of what's gone wrong--and explores how the city might be saved, at least temporarily, through innovative engineering. This is a book anybody who has fallen in love with Venice will want to read, yet it issues a stark warning for people in coastal cities all over the world. If sea levels continue to rise, Venice's bleak fate may also be their own. --John MillerBook Description
Venice is sinking - six feet over the past 1,000 years. The reasons for this are many.Although there is a natural geologic tendency for some sinking, humans have exacerbated the problem by exploiting on a massive scale underground water resources for industrial purposes.Coupled with these events - and perhaps most significant - are climatic changes all over the globe. The heating of the atmosphere after the last ice age, dramatically speeded up by humans, has led to a steady, continuing rise in sea level. This global warming is likely to persist beyond human control for hundreds, if not thousands, of years.Venetians, other Italians, and many in the world community are locked in debate over Venice's plight. Venice Against the Sea explains how the city and its 177 canals were built and what has led up to this long-foreseen crisis. It explores the various options currently being considered for "solving" this problem and chronicles the ongoing debate among scientists, engineers, and politicians about the pros and cons of each potential solution.Through extensive research and interviews, award-winning journalist John Keahey has written the definitive book on this fascinating problem. No matter what the experts decide to do, one thing is for certain - Venice's art, its buildings, and its history are too important to the planet's cultural identity to let it slip beneath the rising waters of the Adriatic.AUTHORBIO: John Keahey, a veteran newspaper journalist, is an Idaho native raised in Nampa, Idaho. He has degrees from the University of Utah, and lives in Salt Lake City with his wife, book designer Connie Disney. He is also the author of A Sweet and Glorious Land.Customer Reviews:

Coastal Lagoons: Ecosystem Processes and Modeling for Sustainable Use and Development
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1566706866 |
Book Description
An effective decision-making process that will consider the hydrodynamic and ecological conditions of coastal lagoons is critical for handling development and protection of these sensitive ecosystems. In the first book of its kind, Coastal Lagoons: Ecosystem Processes and Modeling for Sustainable Use and Development describes the concepts, models, and data needed to design and implement sustainable management programs for the long-term sustainability of coastal lagoons. Based on a project conducted under the auspices of NATO-CCMS (North Atlantic Treaty Organization - Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society), the authors show that by understanding the physical, biogeochemical, and ecological processes and the impact of human land and water uses, policies can be designed and implemented to allow for balanced and sustainable coastal lagoon management. The authors use case studies from their own experience and step-by-step methodologies that illustrate what short- and long-term changes can be expected, based on nutrient inputs and water renewal rates. By integrating science and management, this book emphasizes the basic processes and criteria to be considered in any modeling task, thus creating a framework for adaptive management and sustainability. Conceptual illustrations and tables with equations, rates, and coefficients used in major processes are presented. Coastal Lagoons: Ecosystem Processes and Modeling for Sustainable Use and Development a valuable tool for managers designing a sound, ecosystem-oriented, model-based sustainable development solution to resource management.

Intertidal Deposits: River Mouths, Tidal Flats, and Coastal Lagoons (Crc Marine Science Series)
Doeke Eisma Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849380499 |
Book Description
Intertidal Deposits: River Mouths, Tidal Flats, and Coastal Lagoons combines the authors personal and professional experience with the mass of available literature to present a cohesive overview of intertidal deposits and the widely diverse conditions of their formation worldwide. This includes the strong influence of water movements, climate, sediment particle characteristics, vegetation, fauna, and man. Intertidal areas are important for many reasons both scientifically and economically and recently, a growing concern for conservation of these fragile regions strives to preserve and protect their natural balance. This book, written by an international expert in the field, concentrates on the more important intertidal areas distinguished by size and morphology, tidal range, the degree and type of vegetational cover, the amount and type of benthic fauna, the extent of human exploitation, and the degree of previous study.

Lagoons and Coastal Wetlands in the Global Change Context: Impact and Management Issues: Selected papers of the International Conference "CoastWetChange", ... April 2004 (Developments in Hydrobiology)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402060076 |
Book Description
This interdisciplinary volume comprehensively reviews recent developments in wetland science and global change. The aim is to identify gaps, problems and successes in the integration of scientific issues into lagoon and coastal wetland management. The major strength of this volume is that it integrates several fields of research including climatology, hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and biology. By adopting such a structure, the reader is provided with an updated insight of impacts, changes and alteration of coastal lagoons and wetlands deriving from local anthropogenic pressures and global processes, e.g. coastal erosion, sea level rise, flooding and biological invasions. The recent evolution of lagoons and coastal wetlands is analysed, including population and community dynamics, biogeochemical processes and pollution, key biological elements and related indicators. Significant issues, as flooding and ecological risk assessment, are framed into coastal dynamics considering local specific and more general situations. Lagoons and wetlands are also analysed as sentinel ecosystems for developing coastal observations of global change. This book will therefore provide a reference work for wetland scientists, as well as for policy and decision makers involved in coastal lagoons and wetlands management.

The 2006 Economic and Product Market Databook for Latakia, Syrian Arab Republic
Philip M. Parker Manufacturer: ICON Group International, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0497808285 Release Date: 2006-12-11 |
Book Description
In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have occasionally been asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services in Syrian Arab Republic. The purpose of this study is to understand the density of demand within Syrian Arab Republic and the extent to which Latakia might be used as a point of distribution within The Middle East. From an economic perspective, however, Latakia does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries, rather, it represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for Latakia over the next five years for hundreds of industries, categories and products. The goal of this report is to report the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by Latakia when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in Latakia used by the space industry to launch satellites. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by the area served by Latakia. Without Latakia, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the population in Syrian Arab Republic, The Middle East, or the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both The Middle East and Latakia. The data presented are the result of various spatial econometric and time-series forecasting models which, for each category presented, are applied to forecast and allocate demand across all countries of the world and major distribution centers or centers of dominant influence within each country. This is accomplished knowing that economic fundamentals (e.g. income) generally vary from one city to another within a given country over time. In this report, I report the allocation for each category for Latakia as an area of dominant influence in Syrian Arab Republic and, potentially, The Middle East. Important Caveat. Category definitions may overlap. The sum of multiple categories, therefore, may double count.
