I enjoy gemstone lore and this is a nice addition to my collection. The language is a little dated, a little dry, and the pictures are not great, but the text is substantial. I enjoy reading it. I would recommend this book.

Excellent book, bad quality photo reproducing.......2007-02-06

The book itself is excellent, an important reference study and a very amusing book for the lover of gems. The author is a leading American scholar in his time, this one is his best: informative with sound statements and principal references. When you read it, you can touch the atmosphere of the great collections arranged by him and the greatest library on precious and semiprecious stones, which he had.

The only disadventage of this edition is the very poor photo reproducing of the original photos. The book contains many rare photos, but the reproducing is so bad, that they make you furious, if you see them.

So, 5 stars to the book itself and zero for the photo reproduction.

The foundation for the study of Gemstone Lore.......2006-10-06

This book ought to be required reading for all studying the occult aspects of gemstones, and even those that are interested in crystal healing. The material presented in this book is very informative, albeit outdated in some respects. Nonetheless, it is necessary to learn what the formative principles are in this field of study, and this book is an excellent look into the earlier work published solely on the topic of gemstones.

Classic on Gemstone Lore.......2006-09-17

I bought this book because Kunz's work has been the basis for much of what we know about ancient gemstone lore. Kunz's lifelong passion for rocks and gemstones began in childhood and as a gemologist and geologist, he was able to collect and organize vast amounts of gemstone lore. He was also a collector of stones, amulets and magical charms, many of which were donated to the American Museum of Natural History. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident and even though this book is nearly 100 years old, I found it surprisingly easy to read.

This is the book I would have written. This is a great work that aims to break modern man out of his hypnotic trances. Peter gives us a view that transcends our everyday triviality and exposes society for what it really is. This is a fairly comprehensive work especially considering it's only 230 pages.

mr. russell comes up with an academic yet understandable examination of earth's evolution, the rate of evolution on earth(on different levels) and a probable course of evolution.

Here is a satisfying, intellectual exploration of what is to come to pass for human kind's future.

pulsating real-life drama...........2007-05-25

Not a dull page in the book. Gary Gimore was executed in Utah, by the firing squad, in 1977 after the death penalty was reinstated. Norman Mailer in an incredibly researched book writes Gimore's compelling story. Gilmore grew up in a prison life and he knew that he would never change no matter how many people tried to help him. He could cope in prison but not in the real world as is true of so many prisonmates. He argued for the death penalty rather then rot in prison. He forced society to examine it's own laws and it's own conscience but it is not a sympathetic character study for he killed 2 people in a meaningless robbery. Read this incredible book then watch the movie with Tommie Lee Jones.

The Gary Gilmore Story (and a Pulitzer Prize Winner!).......2007-01-19

Let me tell you first that this is a LONG book -- about 1,200 pages. I read it throughout the past year while I was in between books.

The book tells the true story of Gary Gilmore, a convicted murderer. He was sentenced to death in Utah, a state where the death penalty was never actually carried out. Gary wanted to die rather than spend the rest of his life in prison, so he began petitioning the courts for his right to die. This became a huge media sensation at the time. I remember it well.

Normal Mailer used notes and tape recordings collected throughout the ordeal to write a very personal account of this story and the events surrounding it. Every page of the book is entirely believable.

...that is not to say that it's always interesting, though. The love story between Gary Gilmore and his 19-year old girlfriend is interesting. Gary's dialogue with just about anybody (family, lawyers, movie producers) is always interesting as well. On the flip-side, much of the information on the lawyers and producers and their personal backgrounds is quite boring, but probably necessary due to the level of detail in the rest of the book.

Overall, I recommend the book for the story itself and the thorough research. I did wonder after reading this 1200-page book whether I should have just watched the movie? I don't know -- I still haven't seen it yet.

Gary Gilmores eyes.......2006-09-29

This book is large in size and even more substatial in it's research and substance. I have to admit I was only interested in this book after seeing one mof Matthew Barney's Cremaster films. This book would leave me wanting more and more, and for several hundred pages it was very able to provide. After rading this book I would suggest trying to find the learning channel's documentary on Gary Gilmore so that you can see the actual charectors faces. I can't realy say much about this book that has not been said already. It has appealed to so many readers of different genre, that there is a safe chance that it will appeal to you. I would also reccomend reading "under the banner of heaven" as well. The two books though seperate in time frame and subject compliment each other on hte subject of Utah mormanism. I could not pu tthis book down and neglected many other projects to finish it.
If you are an aspireing journalist or writer, beware- this book will cause you to reconsider your vocation as you probably cannot write, research, interveiw, or compile a flowing timeline this well. Give up now.

A LENGTHY READ, BUT EXCEPTIONALLY WELL RESEARCHED AND DOCUMENTED.......2006-07-22

I am not an avid reader of true crime books but the publicity and size of this book intrigued me. Actually, I have just finished reading the book for the second time since it was first published. It is easy to understand why "The Executioner's Song" was a Pulitzer Prize winner. Norman Mailer completed an astonishing amount of research to bring this masterpiece to reality. Yes, the book is a very long one, but it still leaves the reader wishing there was more. The book is never boring and never skips a beat.

There was so much to Gary Gilmore, not just as a prisoner on death row, but his psychological development was a complex one. The author has the ability to help us see who Gary really was - his weaknesses, fears, insecurities and what actually made him tick. In spite of Gary's wrong doing, he was an intellectual and artistic individual. Mailer has an incredible way of presenting Gilmore's story in a factual, down-to-earth manner. As far as this book goes, I do not agree with some reviews of Mailer's works, stating that he has an egotistical writing style. I have not read all his books, so that may or may not be the case; however, this one certainly does not show any indication of a self-absorbed, self-centred mind.

If you find a fascinating book, it does not matter how many pages it contains, the reading is enjoyable. "The Executioner's Song" grasps the reader's attention from start to finish and is certainly an exceptional, well documented book.

Engaging from start to finish.......2006-07-09

This book was never boring, not on page 100 or page 1000. The research is phenomenal, and Mailer has done an excellent job of taking these real life events and turning them into a readable novel that feels like genuine historical fiction. Gary Gilmore is an incredibly memorable main character, and Mailer paints a fair picture of him. He's very human - full of anger, prone to incredibly poor judgment, but also surprisingly bright and loving and tender at times. He's an onion with lots of layers, and that's what makes him so interesting.

The writing turned me off at first, I have to admit. Personally I expected more from a Pulitzer Prize-winner. The informal prose, often devolving into incomplete sentences and full of awkward colloquialisms, I can only assume was meant to provide an authentic flavor to enhance the story. It didn't work for me, but fortunately the story stands on its own just fine. This is a fascinating look inside a real human being who commits an evil crime, and then fights for his right to die. All the characters that surround him, from his girlfriend to his lawyers to the movie producers and journalists who flock to his execution, round out this remarkable novel.
