For individuals interested in one text providing comprehensive coverage of both sedimentology and stratigraphy.
Customer Reviews:
principles of sedimentology.......2005-09-21
this book was not at all like new, it was watermarked, ripped cover and crappy highlighting.
Probably one of the better sed-strat books around.......2005-09-01
I used this book in my sedimentation and stratigraphy course two years ago, but I still have it hanging around on my bookshelves after three moves and a new school. Why? Because it's incredibly useful!
Boggs is probably one of the better organized sedimentology books I've had the pleasure to come across. I've come away from reading it with a better understanding of depositional environments than I could have gotten otherwise. The illustrations were quite clear to me, and fit into the text well.
In conclusion, Boggs makes a relatively complicated subject much easier to grasp for an undergraduate without dumbing it down to the point where the book is useless to anyone else. This is just as good of a reference as it is a text!
Interesting to the interested.......2005-08-05
This is a no-nonsense, well-organized, and detailed introduction to sedimentology and stratigraphy. In a nutshell, it covers 1) the origin and transport of sediments, 2)physical properties of sedimentary rocks, 3) classification of sedimentary rocks, 4) depositional environments, and 5) the principles of stratigraphy. Though most may aquire it as a text for a sed-strat course, it would make a useful reference for any interested person.
Regarding a previous review here, a book should not be judged by how it will not be useful for an upcoming exam. That may instead be an indicator of some deeper issues with the student, the instructors, and the course. Also, when someone says something is "unclear" and "bogged down in details", I would assume they are not too interested in the subject matter to begin with. If one has made it as far as sed-strat and finds it "boring", I would highly recommend switching majors before more time and money are wasted. It will only get harder, not to mention graduate-level study or actual professional work. Since the review was written five years ago, I guess the die has already been cast.
A clear, well written text.......2004-11-30
Principles of Sedimentology and Stratigraphy is a clear and well written text. Excellent pictures and drawings add to the clarity and enhanced my enjoyment.
Solid as a rock.......2000-08-29
Although Boggs dispenses with the multicoloured pictures and obligatory CD-Rom favoured by many modern textbooks, this is not to his detriment. It results in a more concise textbook with clear and simple sketches used effectively to illustrate the text. Perhaps the book may appear somewhat `boring' to certain students, but I prefer to think of it as a `solid' textbook that says what it needs to in a generally clear and understandable manner. For those undergraduates who are more interested in quality rather than flashy appearances, this textbook will prove invaluable in your study of geology.

Principles of Sedimentary Basin Analysis
ASIN: 0444515682 |
Book Description
Principles of Sequence Stratigraphy provides an in-depth coverage and impartial assessment of all current ideas and models in the field of sequence stratigraphy. Even though widely popular among all groups interested in the analysis of sedimentary basin fills, both in academia and in the industry, sequence stratigraphy is yet a difficult undertaking due to an overwhelming jargon and the persistence of conflicting approaches as to how the sequence stratigraphic method should be applied to the rock record. This textbook examines the relationship between such conflicting approaches from the perspective of a unifying platform, demonstrating that sufficient common ground exists to eliminate terminology barriers and to facilitate communication between all practitioners of sequence stratigraphy.
This work is not only a review of past and current literature, but also includes key original viewpoints and is illustrated with new graphic material and numerous field examples of outcrop, core, well log and 3D seismic data in full colour. The book is addressed to anyone interested in understanding and applying the method of sequence stratigraphic analysis, from students to geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers. Sequence stratigraphy remains the most recent paradigm in the broad field of sedimentary geology, with tremendous potential to deciphering the record of global change and to improving the success of economic exploration.
* Offers theoretical guidelines of how the facies and time relationships are expected to be under specific circumstances such as subsidence patterns, sediment supply, topographic gradients, etc.
* Contains numerous high-quality and full-color diagrams, photographs and illustrations, virtually on every aid in comprehension of the subject
* Features a dedicated chapter on discussions and conclusions incorporating all previous chapters with references, basic principles and strategies
* Provides an extensive list of references for further reading, as well as an author and subject index for quick information access

Book Description
Over the past five years there have been many advances in the field of basin analysis. Developments such as the publication of new stratigraphic codes; new research in fission-track dating; evolution of thought regarding the importance of tectonic versus eustatic controls of regional and global cycles; and refinements of geophysically-based, basin-subsidence models have necessitated the publication of a second edition of
Principles of Sedimentary Basin
Analysis. Like the first edition, this book emphasizes the stratigraphic evidence which geologists can actually see in outcrops, well records, and core samples and can gather using geophysical techniques.
Principles of Sedimentary
Basin Analysis is both an excellent text for students and a practical handbook for professional geologists.

Ground-penetrating radar and its use in sedimentology: principles, problems and progress [An article from: Earth Science Reviews]
A. Neal
Manufacturer: Elsevier
ProductGroup: Book
Binding: Digital
ASIN: B000RR082G |
Book Description
This digital document is a journal article from Earth Science Reviews, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Ground-penetrating radar (GPR, also referred to as ground-probing radar, surface-penetrating radar, subsurface radar, georadar or impulse radar) is a noninvasive geophysical technique that detects electrical discontinuities in the shallow subsurface (
<50 m). It does this by generation, transmission, propagation, reflection and reception of discrete pulses of high-frequency (MHz) electromagnetic energy. During the 1980s radar systems became commercially available, but it was not until the mid-1990s that sedimentary geologists and others began to widely exploit the technique. During the last decade numerous sedimentological studies have used GPR to reconstruct past depositional environments and the nature of sedimentary processes in a variety of environmental settings; to aid hydrogeological investigations, including groundwater reservoir characterisation, and to assist in hydrocarbon reservoir analogue studies. This is because in correctly processed radar profiles, and at the resolution of a survey, primary reflections usually parallel primary depositional structure. Despite the wide use of GPR, a number of fundamental problems remain in its application to sedimentary research. In particular, there are a wide range of approaches to the processing of radar data and interpretation techniques used on the final subsurface images vary widely, with little consensus over a common methodology. This review attempts to illustrate that methods for the collection, processing and interpretation of radar data are intimately linked and that thorough understanding of the nature, limitations and implications of each step is required if realistic sedimentological data are to be generated. In order to extract the maximum amount of meaningful information, the user must understand the scientific principles that underlie the technique, the effects of the data collection regime employed, the implications of the technique's finite resolution and depth of penetration, the nature and causes of reflections unrelated to primary sedimentary structure, and the appropriateness of each processing step with respect to the overall aim of the study. Following suitable processing, a radar stratigraphy approach to reflection profile interpretation should be adopted. New or modified terminologies and techniques to define a radar stratigraphy are also recommended, in order to make the interpretation process more transparent and to avoid confusion with related methodologies such as seismic stratigraphy and sequence stratigraphy. The full potential of GPR in sedimentary research will only be realised if more thorough and systematic approaches to data collection, processing and interpretation are adopted.

Experimental aspects and laboratory details are highlighted in separate panels that enrich text and emphasize recent developments.
Notably, new material in the third edition includes sections on important devices, aspects of non- periodic structures of matter, phase transitions, defects, superconductors and nanostructures.
Students will benefit significantly from solving the exercises given at the end of each chapter. This book is intended for university students in physics, materials science and electrical engineering. This edition has been thoroughly updated to maintain its usefulness as modern text and reference.
Customer Reviews:
i disagree.......2006-07-03
i dont have it in front of me for a more detailed review, but the text is popular with german students and only after it became more widespread was it translated into english and redistributed. it's a fine introductory text (and better than kittel in my opinion, which reads more like a recipe-book).
Seems very incomplete.......2001-03-19
We used this text in an introductory solid state course. Overall, it seems that the text is far too brief and doesn't thoroughly explain the material enough for an introductory course. There are very few examples/applications. The problems in the chapter require research outside of what is in the text. It leaves out a lot of important details. I would really suggest looking elsewhere for a good solid state introduction.
Limited audience.......2000-02-23
I used this book in a course which was supposed to be an introduction to solid state. Know some basic ideas in crystal structure, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, advanced and partial differential equations and Fourier anlysis and then you'll begin to be ready to understand this text. Kittel's Solid State text is slightly more helpful (but only slightly). The book is completely devoid of examples, yet there are sections at the end of each chapter involving current applications and experiments in condensed matter physics and materials science. Exercises require a leap of understanding from the contents of the chapter before them. Some experience with a computer language may also be necessary. I wouldn't recommend this book for most undergrads.

Book Description
This famous book, representing some of the finest thinking and writing about the history of American labor in the twentieth century, is now revised to incorporate two important recent essays, one surveying the historical study of the CIO from its founding to its fiftieth anniversary in 1985, another placing in historical and comparative perspective the declining fortunes of the labor movement from 1980 to the present. As always, Brody confronts central questions, both substantive and historiographical, focusing primarily on the efforts of laboring people to assert some control over their working lives, and on the equal determination of American business to conserve the prerogatives of management. Long a classic in the field of American labor history, valued by general readers and specialists alike for its brilliance of argument and clarity of style, Workers in Industrial America is now more timely than ever.
