Book Description
A large-scale outbreak of red tide along coastal areas is becoming a global marine hazard, which is associated with fish and shellfish mass mortalities through poisoning. The Seto Inland Sea, the largest semi-enclosed sea in Japan has suffered from red tide outbreaks since the late 1950's.
This book discusses the red tide phenomena throughout the world, which includes biological research results on taxonomy of cyst and vegetative cells of red tide organisms and ecological and physiological studies using ecological modeling.
This book is undoubtedly useful for scientists and students in the field of biological oceanography, marine environment science and aquaculture, as well as governmental researchers working for the conservation of marine coastal environment.

Book Description
Something has been set loose in the city -- an airborne horror that leaves a tunnel full of corpses below the streets of Seattle just as experts from fifty nations are gathering at a downtown hotel for an international symposium on chemical and biological weapons. Terror has hit the West Coast with a vengeance -- as a deadly tide sweeps into Frank Corso's town.
"Disgraced" rogue journalist and reclusive bestselling author Corso is at an exhibition showcasing the photographs of his best friend and ex-lover Meg Dougherty when terror strikes.
The deeper he immerses himself in a shadow world of senseless violence and unconscionable evil, the stronger the connections appear that tie one brutal death with the impending destruction of thousands -- perhaps millions -- of innocent lives. And suddenly Corso is caught up in a deadly conspiracy where the nightmarish consequences dwarf anything normally spawned by vengeance, greed, or bloodlust.
From the critically acclaimed author of Fury and A Blind Eye comes a gripping tale of unrelenting suspense that promises to lift G.M. Ford permanently into the uppermost tier of contemporary crime novelists. Gritty, explosive, timely, and terrific, Ford's Red Tide will carry readers away on a ride they will never forget.

Terror has hit the West Coast with a vengeance -- leaving a tunnel full of corpses beneath the Seattle streets, with a dark promise of far, far worse to come. Despite official attempts to keep the catastrophe under wraps, rogue journalist Frank Corso refuses to remain idle, immersing himself in a shadow world of senseless violence and unconscionable evil. For a strange connection that seems to tie one exceptionally brutal death with the impending destruction of thousands -- perhaps millions -- of innocent lives is pulling Corso and his best friend and ex-lover, photographer Meg Dougherty, deeper into the heart of a hideous conspiracy. And its nightmarish consequences will dwarf anything ever spawned by simple jealousy, greed, or bloodlust.
Customer Reviews:
I'm...Trying....To.....Finish......It............2007-01-21
I really enjoy G.M. Ford's writing. I love his characters, I love his sense of humor, and I love the underlying darkness that flows through his Corso series. I gotta tell you, though, I'm about 3/4 way through this book and I'm struggeling to finish.
Is it the massive number of characters? I didn't know I'd need to keep notes on this one. Each time a new chapter or sub-chapter starts, I have to read a line or two, then try to remember who that person is, where they fit in the story. Is it the fact that this is more "espianage" (sorry, spelling is not my strong point) and less "mystery"? Is it that there is just something tedious about the writing? Is it the mysterious woman who keeps showing up and disappearing (really tiring plot device after the first 4 to 6 times)?
I knew in the beginning of the book, when two characters from his first Corso book came back......but shouldn't have. One had been shot in the head and killed in Fury, but in this book, he had been shanked in prison. The other had shot is own jaw off in Fury, but that wasn't even alluded to. So maybe I've just had an attitude about this since the first chapter. I hate it when something in a book takes me out of the "reality" of the story.
So, I'm back to trying to slog my way through the rest of it, because I hate to leave it unfinished, but frankly, after I finish, I plan on thinking of this book like the "it was all a dream" episode in Dallas. I'll pretend it never happened, and enjoy the rest of the Corso series in full.
Another great ride from GM Ford.......2005-10-06
When you start buying books in hard cover rather than waiting for the paperback, you know you're hooked. GM Ford has grown from his comic-mysteries, featuring the lovable bums, to more noirish and grimmer productions, featuring Corso and his tattooed lady. Well written, hold your attention, scare the bejeezus out of you sometimes. I wait with anticipation for each new model.
Let's keep it real, not personal.......2005-09-25
This is my first GM Ford book and I will read more. It is well written and as any mystery-adventure-thriller needs to be, it is exciting and well paced.
Frank Corso, the angry but brilliant center of other Ford endeavors, get's drawn into the horrific bio-terrorism scene when more than 100 of Seattle's commuters are killed in the Pioneer bus tunnel. The book travels quickly mixing sufficient portions of fear, outrage, police procedures and science to keep most readers interested. There are three areas that I found tedious.
I don't think that the fictional novel genre is the right place for personal political commentary. Whether you're Oliver North or GM Ford, I think (at least for me) that what you want to do by reading fiction is to spend a few hours in the theater of your mind, not being yelled at by the author's and his/her personal vendetta on given subjects. Corso's outrage maybe appropriate but if you want that you need to go over to the NON FICTION section of Borders. I'm not interested in it in a novel and I find it bordering on pandering.
Secondly, it is the anger. An outburst here, an outburst there is OK. Constant mecurial explosions remind me of a family member you are fearful of inviting to a child's birthday party because you just don't want to hear (again) how 'the cops are pigs and we're all being crushed under the thumb of George Bush.' Again, that's in a different section of Borders. It's right next to the Michael Moore insightful text on life in America.
Finally, too much of the book makes new readers dependant upon previous personal facts and history of the main characters.
I'll read Ford again but I had difficulty with some of these passages. 3 stars. Larry Scantlebury
Science Fiction or Mystery?.......2005-07-25
I love Ford's Leo Waterman series and the first 2 Frank Corso's, but he starting losing me on the 3rd book and I had to start skipping through Red Tide. It isn't that I don't believe bio-terrorism is possible and maybe that really isn't why I didn't like the book, but that topic is just not what I thought I would be reading about picking up a G. M. Ford. Isn't it enough we have to hear/read about this every day, I wish the mystery writers would leave it alone. I had a hard time keeping all of the officials straight until almost the end of the book and Frank Corso seemed like just another character. The whole book just felt like an author's break from writing a series and attempting a stand alone.
3.5 stars - Needed a better end........2005-04-10
It was nice to see Corso working with the police, for a change. And there were a couple other very good characters in the policeman Hart and reporter Sexton. The pace is tense and fast and keeps you turning the pages late into the night. Although I was disappointed with the very end of the book, I shall certainly be first in line for his next one.

Customer Reviews:
Barcomb captures the Magical feel of SW FL.......2006-04-07
I bought this book because I'm from Sarasota and now live in GA and I have to admit I sometimes get homesick. I was hoping for a book that would catch the wonderful feeling of my hometown and describe the beautiful places I miss. Barcomb's book does not only that but also has interesting characters involved in an entertaining and plausible murder mystery.
Barcomb writes of what has happened countless times before...a Northerner visits Sarasota and falls in love with the place and the interesting mix of people. Developers, marine scientists, little old ladies that make and follow condo owner rules, and more are all found in this great story.
What doesn't happen everyday is that the main charater Sam Wallace gets involved in investigating a murder of someone he just met upon arriving in town. Several suspects with various motives keep you guessing throughout the book.
This is a great first book in what will hopefully be many more that are about Sam Wallace's adventures in Sarasota. In Barcomb's next book, Undercurrent, Wallace gets his Private Investigator License.
If you have been to Sarasota, this book will take you back. If you haven't been to Sarasota, you may find yourself booking a trip in the near future.
P.S. With apologies to Randy Wayne White, I think I have found my new favorite Florida mystery writer.
The Perfect Vacation Book.......2003-12-08
Have a plane trip to take? Or a few days of relaxation planned? Then "Blood Tide" is the perfect book to take with you. The characters and places depicted in the novel are as believable at the descriptions are accurate. Living Sarasota, Florida where all the action takes place, you feel you are right there with Sam as he unravels the secrets of Sarasota "Society". This would make a great holiday gift for the mystery buff on your list.
So much more than a well-written mystery.......2003-11-04
Blood Tide is a wonderful mystery full of interesting characters, including the most adorable dog I've ever met in print. Sam, the main character, is a likeable fellow who happens upon Sarasota, Florida after a bad turn of luck in his home city. Once he's here, he meets up with many of Sarasota's unique residents (author Barcomb hits the nail on the head in this respect; I know many people just like the ones he writes about). In the book as in life, this diverse group of people needs each other to survive, though many of them would never admit it. The mystery part of the book moves along and keeps you guessing until the end. There are two other elements of the book that I personally found interesting: it's almost like a Sarasota area travel book, mentioning real locations and taking the reader on a tour of this beautiful city as the mystery progresses; and it offers a curious way to learn about red tide, which, if you live in this area, you know can be devastating to human and animal life. Blood Tide offers an insight into another way red tide can wreak havoc, one I never thought of. All three of these elements are beautifully combined in one fascinating book. I found Blood Tide hard to put down.

Book Description
When my 12 year old neice lived her last year in a hospital bed, she still traveled the world through art.She learned about family loyalty, universal truths and famous paintings. Forgetting that she was sick and probably dying, the artists showed her all that was beautiful and tragic, like herself. She came to realize that she was a part of nature's grand scheme, not some rotten and unholy person who got cancer. Before she was diagnosed with leukemia, Amber played like all the other kids in the summer-swimming and running up the boardwalk to her grandfather's Wharf Casino restaurant. But it was her discovery of the Cap'ts treasure map, in the attic studio, that turned her into a bloodhound-and she had to know everything. Yes, her life was far too short, still she taught us to be strong, but kind, truthful and curious-loving more than yourself. I wrote this book as a memorial to her, and to give others a chance to appreciate the healing powers of art.

Devlin Waugh : Swimming In Blood

Book Description
Foundations of Biogeography provides facsimile reprints of seventy-two works that have proven fundamental to the development of the field. From classics by Georges-Louis LeClerc Compte de Buffon, Alexander von Humboldt, and Charles Darwin to equally seminal contributions by Ernst Mayr, Robert MacArthur, and E. O. Wilson, these papers and book excerpts not only reveal biogeography's historical roots but also trace its theoretical and empirical development. Selected and introduced by leading biogeographers, the articles cover a wide variety of taxonomic groups, habitat types, and geographic regions. Foundations of Biogeography will be an ideal introduction to the field for beginning students and an essential reference for established scholars of biogeography, ecology, and evolution.
List of Contributors
John C. Briggs, James H. Brown, Vicki A. Funk, Paul S. Giller, Nicholas J. Gotelli, Lawrence R. Heaney, Robert Hengeveld, Christopher J. Humphries, Mark V. Lomolino, Alan A. Myers, Brett R. Riddle, Dov F. Sax, Geerat J. Vermeij, Robert J. Whittaker
Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive and thorough.......2007-07-30
This is a comprehensive collection of papers cleverly compiled by the editor. A very interesting aspect is that it covers a wide range of topics within biogeography along with an equally wide range of study organisms. Articles from several decades of research are available in one book which enables readers to see how the field has evolved over time. It is an excellent supplement to Brown and Lomolino's or Glen McDonald's Biogeography textbooks. I would consider adding it as a required book for a class in Biogegraphy.
A biogeographer's bible (but also good for the amateur naturalist).......2005-12-28
Biogeography is a vast subject and in the introduction of this mammoth volume of almost 1300 pages it is argued that it should be treated as a separate major discipline within the framework of life sciences. Foundations charts the history of biogeography from Linnaen roots in the 18th century to the mid 1980s by collecting together and reproducing in whole or in part classic papers, articles and book chapters that represent innovation, refinement and expansion in the horizons of this subject. The selection overall represents the corpus of material upon which modern biogeographic studies flourish. The burden of choice in the selections used has rested on the shoulders of the editors and a small army of recognisable experts individually appointed to take care of each of the seven parts of the work dealing with separate themes in a roughly chronological framework. Each part begins with an introductory section which relates the items selected to the theme under consideration - representing both a commentary and a corrective to the "historical" material to follow.
To a large extent biogeography is a linkage of evolutionary and speciation studies to Earth history and geography in the contexts like climates, barriers and habitats. From key innovators there is a roll call of some of the best known workers encompassing geology, zoology botany and palaeontology.
In 1858 the ornithologist P. L. Sclater defined the zoogeographic realms still largely accepted to this date. Darwin, Wallace and J. D. Hooker amongst a coterie of sadly lesser known botanists argued out and complimented each others ideas of evolution in relation to geography. The identification of the ice ages and subsequently plate tectonics via A. Wegener and the synthesis of resulting thought probably represents the historical highlight of Foundations. The role call continues with G. G. Simpson, W. Hennig, L. Croizat, E. Mayr, D. Lack, E. O. Wilson and J. M. Diamond representing just a selection of the authors signposting a radiation of ideas.
Foundations is very much a multidisciplinary spread and not just a historical progression. Important concepts are highlighted and explored within further themes such as Vicariance and Dispersal, Diversification, Islands, Assembly rules and Gradients asking why there are so many species in the tropics.
The work is no primer and would take quite a lot of study unless an eclectic approach is taken to start with. It contains some of the most important papers in the field ever written - eminently quotable and often inaccessible and complex mathematical theory in parts. There could be some argument about the selection and potential biases. Overall the format represents a highly collectible reference of scriptural proportions to naturalists and historians alike and the work will enhance future research. As broached in the introduction the format is repeatable making this an important edition of a larger historical enterprise.
Biogeography papers.......2005-07-27
This series of papers provides an in depth background to the field of Biogeography. Many of the papers reprinted here are difficult to obtain else where.
Excellent, like like the rest of the "Foundations of..." series.
An excellent sourcebook.......2004-12-04
This collection is a worthy companion to Chicago Univ. Press' earlier FOUNDATIONS OF ECOLOGY. Spanning the period (literally) of Linnaeus to MacArthur BIOGEOGRAPHY presents a wealth of key sources (many now hard to find)which, when coupled with the Commetaries can form the core of a solid course on Biogeography. While some folks may complain that the collection stops too soon (early 1970's) I think the editors have been wise to really restrict themsleves to classics with real staying power, rather than run the risk of being more "contemporary" by including things that may be little more than 9 days' wonders. I would STRONGLY reccomend this book for any grad student or professor interested in ecology, biogeography, or evolution. I doubt my copy will spend much time on the shelf!

Handbook of Optical Constants of Solids, Author and Subject Indices for Volumes I, II, and III
ASIN: 012544415X |
Book Description
This set of five volumes, four volumes edited by Edward D. Palik and a volume by Gorachand Ghosh, is a unique resource for any science and technology library. It provides materials researchers and optical device designers with reference facts in a context not available anywhere else. The singular functionality of the set derives from the unique format for the three core volumes that comprise the
Handbook of Optical Constants of Solids. The
Handbook satisfies several essential needs: first, it affords the most comprehensive database of the refractive index and extinction (or loss) coefficient of technically important and scientifically interesting dielectrics. This data has been critically selected and evaluated by authorities on each material. Second, the dielectric constant database is supplemented by tutorial chapters covering the basics of dielectric theory and reviews of experimental techniques for each wavelength region and material characteristic. As an additional resource, two of the tutorial chapters summarize the relevant characteristics of each of the materials in the database.
The data in the core volumes have been collected and analyzed over a period of twelve years, with the most recent completed in 1997. The volumes systematically define the dielectric properties of 143 of the most engaging materials, including metals, semiconductors, and insulators. Together, the three Palik books contain nearly 3,000 pages, with about 2/3 devoted to the dielectric constant data. The tutorial chapters in the remaining 1/3 of the pages contain a wealth of information, including some dielectric data. Hence, the separate volume,
Index to Handbook of Optical Constants of Solids, which is included as part of the set, substantially enhances the utility of the
Handbook and in essence, joins all the Palik volumes into one unit. It isthen of great importance to users of the set. A final volume rounds out the set. The
Handbook of Thermo-Optic Coefficients of Optical Materials with Applications collects refractive index measurements and their temperature dependence for a large number of crystals and glasses. Mathematical models represent these data, and in turn are used in the design of nonlinear optical devices.
* Unique source of extremely useful optical data for a very broad community of scientists, researchers, and practitioners
* Will be of great practical applicability to both industry and research
* Presents optical constants for a broadest spectral range, for a very large number of materials: Paliks three volumes include 143 materials including 43 elements; Ghoshs volume includes some 70 technologically interesting crystals and many commercial glasses
* Includes a special index volume that enables the user to search for the information in the three Palik volumes easily and quickly
* Critique chapters in the Palik volumes discuss the data and give reference to most of the literature available for each material
* Presents various techniques for measuring the optical constants and mathematical models for analytical calculations of some data
Customer Reviews:
Erudite and encyclopedic but extremely expensive.......2001-07-17
I've used Palik & Ghosh as an occasional reference work for years, because it's very good, and has chapters on most of the materials I've needed to work with--metals, silicon, and oxide dielectrics of one sort or another. Obviously a lot of work went into it, and it's a pretty specialized business, measuring and tabulating optical properties. I'd give it 5 stars for content, no doubt about it--an orchid for the editors: for their part of the deal they deserve our praise and thanks.
The set gets about one star for value, because it's priced like a last-minute airline ticket--those who need it sufficiently badly will pay. The publishers want something getting on for a grand for 5 books, and *two and a half grand* for the same thing in software, which costs nothing to reproduce! For most people, the abbreviated tables in recent editions of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics are better than good enough, though it would be great to be able to afford Palik and Ghosh.
If the price ever comes down by a factor of three, I'd probably buy the books, but it would take a factor of 10 before I'd consider the software.
