i can t beleive this is a text book.......2007-05-12
well just take my word . if u plan is to hate E&M field and T lines ,this book will do the job . i suffer for 2 semester with this book , not just me but at least a dozen of students with me and i m glade its over and done with .
i don t want to scare u but field theory and transmission lines are not that easy and with such a text book the semester will be very long for u
Fast Shipment!.......2006-11-15
Received the book in the promised time. Will buy from this seller again.
Are You Kidding Me?.......2006-11-05
This is the worst textbook I have ever used is any class. The coverage of the topic is unclear and the practice questions are poorly worded. I can only hope that my school will find another text for teaching this subject.
Awful, just plain awful........2006-10-16
I find this to be a very interesting course, but it is made quite difficult by a single small problem: It is very hard to get an understanding of a field which is built upon a solid foundation of mathematics when the book you're using skips over this most crucial aspect.
It is great that I have answers to the odd problems and the in section examples, but with no work to guide me I am left frustrated and exhausted. Combined with 4 other classes, this leads to a tough time trying to figure out even simple concepts.
Find a better book unless you already have a thorough understanding of this material, you will NOT regret it.
Major, major problems.......2006-08-03
I originally started with the 6th edition...but there were no answers in the back, even for the odd-numbered problems. I asked the publisher and they said it was a policy. OK, that's dumb, but whatever.
Then I went to the 5th edition and got fairly far, but eventually got to a point where I couldn't solve one of the problems and the worthless examples weren't helping. (The examples are worthless because the question and answers are given, but the work isn't shown. Uh, hello--that's the point of examples.) The book has a certain surface readability but doesn't really explain the underlying issues very well. Chapter one is a good example of this: I knew cylindrical and spherical coordinates a lot better before this book confused me.
Then I got the 7th edition. I got as far as problem #17 in chapter one and found *4* errors (One simple typo in a problem, one answer somewhat off and two answers just out of the ballpark, flat out *wrong*).
The original author died 20 years ago--it is time for this book to be scrapped.
Book Description
"Engineering Electromagnetics" is a "classic" in Electrical Engineering textbook publishing. First published in 1958 it quickly became a standard and has been a best-selling book for over 4 decades. A new co-author from Georgia Tech has come aboard for the sixth edition to help update the book. Designed for introductory courses in electromagnetics or electromagnetic field theory at the junior-level and offered in departments of electrical engineering, the text is a widely respected, updated version that stresses fundamentals and problem solving and discusses the material in an understandable, readable way. As in the previous editions, the book retains the scope and emphasis that have made the book very successful while updating all the problems.
Customer Reviews:
Not that bad........2007-06-18
Actually I kind of liked this book. I was in the department of mechanical engineering when I took an introductory EM course using this textbook (sixth edition) about six years ago (I became the teaching assistant for that course afterward). Everything worked out well. Both the instructor and the book explained things well and I worked out many of the end-of-chapter problems.
Best book on this topic........2004-04-25
This is the best book I ever found on this topic. Its assumes you a beginner and takes you to the engineering level. William Hayt has an outstanding way of communication with the reader. All you require is concentration and imagination power.
Chapters are as follows;
1- VECTOR ANALYSIS
2- COULUMB'S LAW AND ELECTRIC FIELD INTENSITY
3- ELECTRIC FLUX DENSITY
4- ENERGY AND POTENIAL
5- CONDUCTORS, DIELECTRICS AND CAPACITANCE
6- EXPERIMENTAL MAPPING METHODS
7- POISSON'S AND LAPLACE'S EQUATINS
8- THE STEADY MAGNETIC FIELD
9- MAGNETIC FORCES, MATERIALS AND INDUCTANCE
10- TIME VARYING FIELDS AND MAXWELL'S EQUATIONS
11- THE UNIFORM PLANE WAVE
12- PLANE WAVES AT BOUNARIES AND IN DISPERSIVE MEDIA
13- TRANSMISSION LINES
14- WAVEGUIDES AND ANTENNA FUNDAMENTALS
The book is well structured. First five chapters are specially of interest for beginners. End of chapter problems are challenging and tune up the concepts you learned in that chapter.
I strongly recommend this book to those who are interested in fundamentals of telecommunications.
A Very Poor Textbook........2003-12-13
In taking an Engineering Electromagnetics course, I was very disappointed with the instruction of the course; therefore I turned to this textbook for help. Unfortunately, this book is packed with errors, both in the text, and more commonly the end of chapter problems. For such a theoretical subject, the explanation is lacking, and example problems are few and far between. In addition, there are no answers in the back of the book, and the answers available online or on CD-ROM are not all correct, according to my professor. Sigh. All in all, these factors combined to make this a very difficult course, the worst that I have had in my 3.5 years of engineering education.
This is by far the worst text book I have ever used........2003-12-06
As an introductory level textbook, this is terrible. There are barely any examples and the problems are badly worded. Be warned: There is an addendum that goes with the book, because there are a significant number of mistakes.
A disgraceful book trying to explain a beautiful subject........2003-10-27
My engineering professors amaze me. The get the most ridiculous books ever created for a course, then they expect the students to solve the end of chapter problems that they cannot even solve themselves. My teacher spent forty mintues on the board trying to solve a end of chapter problem in this book. The bad part was that he had to keep refering to his solution manual to see how the problem was solved. The guy has a BS and MS degree in physics and a PHD in EE.
It's a bit of na shock if someone with a physics degree cannot solve problems in a text designed for an undergraduate course.
Bottomline: SOlving the problems in this book are impossible. My whole class complains left and right about the end of chapter problems. All the teacher can say is to practice more problems. Yeah that's all nice, but how the in the heck will you know if a solution is correct if you have no soultions at the end of the chapter. And to make matters worse, I don't think he can even solve those problems himself.
Other problems with this book:
-SOme of the theory is okay, but alot of it the author explains in a confusing way.
-Mistakes one after another for certain problems.
I want to learn the subject because I like physics, but I want to learn the subject. Not hate the subject because of a useless book.
I don't recommend this book.
Book Description
Bridging the gap between electric circuits and electronmagnetics, Ulaby's book leads readers from familiar concepts into more advanced topics and applications. A new, interactive CD-ROM accompanying the book allows users to gain physical intuition about electromagnetics.
Earlier and heavier emphasis on dynamics permits coverage of practical applications in communication systems, radar, optics and solid state computers. Chapter titles include Waves and Phasors, Transmission Lines, Vector Analysis, Electrostatics, Magnetostatics, Maxwell's Equations for Time-Varying Fields, Plane-Wave Propagation, Radiation and Antennas, and Satellite Communication Systems and Radar Sensors.
For use in the study of electromagnetics.
Customer Reviews:
Not a very good book.......2006-12-05
I think Ulaby spent more time getting pretty pictures and diagrams than he spent having the book well-written. It was lacking key concepts, and it was all in a terrible order. (e.g. Transmission lines are in the beginning of the book) Yes, he tries to cover transmission lines before students know anything about electromagnetics.
I recommend David K. Cheng's "Field and Wave Electromagnetics." I actually do not know of any E-mag books. It takes a combination of a few books to learn enough to have useful knowledge, but Cheng's book is by far the closest.
I would probably actually give Ulaby two stars, but this book has way to many stars right now. This is probably from him rating himself or something.
Engineering Student Perspective.......2006-06-01
Admittedly, I have little experience with other electromagnetic theory textbooks; however, I have spent a lot of time reading various engineering books. In this text Ulaby explains the various phenomena and mathematical expressions rather clearly with examples that can really help a reader grasp key ideas and solution methods (that being said e-mag theory can still get very complicated in its derivations). The book has a "just right" amount of color, highlighting key terms and amplifying illustrations, to make the book a little more enjoyable to read. The CD, I was surprised to find out, was a very useful tool as well. On it are PDFs of solutions to several problems from the end of each chapter as well as more detailed solutions to in text examples and exercises. The CD also has some helpful animations that help illustrate concepts a little better than paper can. Unfortunately, like many other engineering text books, several of the end of chapter problems are very difficult to solve with the scope of the example problems. Lastly, this textbook is a very handy reference tool due to its thorough index and highlighting.
Best E&M Book for Quick Reference.......2006-01-28
I took EE101 using this book, it covers transmission lines, smith charts, Maxwell's Eqs, the basics... Now I use this book all the time for quick referencing in my other physics and EE courses. I think it's detailed enough for a first course, but probably best paired with a larger volume. The visual design of this book is wonderfull; it has clear, large graphs and diagrams. The example problems are spot on, but maybe a few more would be nice for a beginning EE student.
Simple and Clear - Good Backup for Physics Majors.......2005-04-17
Good coverage of the basic concepts of E+M. I found this text very useful as a backup for Griffiths E+M (standard undergrad text for physics majors). The math is simple (not a legendre polynomial in sight) and the concepts are clear. The coverage of static fields in materials is especially easy to understand. You're not going to find the dielectric tensor covered here, just the basics layed out in an intuitive format.
Worst EMF book ive seen.......2005-02-12
This has got to be the worst book on EMF's I've ever seen. I had to borrow a number of other books on the topic to complete my work. The presentation of topics is awkward at best, and leaves much to be desired. A book that proposes to be teaching the fundamentals should do that, but this book just lists a smattering of facts about EMF's and wave propogation without any semblance of order or reason. Apart from the shoddy treatment of the material itself, the index appears to be for a completely separate book. Not one item listed in the index could be found within ten pages of the supposed location. There was an average of about plus or minus fifteen pages for most entries, and some weren't even in the book at all.

This book is designed to present the fundamental concepts of electromagnetic field theory as they relate to modern engineering applications. As an up-to-date reference it can be used by practicing engineers, or as a text/supplement in standard university courses in electromagnetics. The accompanying CD has a fully functional version of QuickField software and MATLAB simulations, with several from industry. The book has been designed for self-study with a problem-solving approach. Numerous examples with complete, solutions guide the reader through the concepts under discussion. Beginning with a review on vectors, the book covers basic Coulomb's law in vector form up through the propagation of the electromagnetic wave in wave guides. Maxwell's equations are developed from the historical approach wherein relevant experimental laws are gradually introduced and manipulated with the help of steadily increasing knowledge of vector calculus. These equations are identified as and when they occur for static and time varying fields. In the last two chapters these equations are then explored in a collective way. Customer Reviews:
Not for the regular guy.......2007-09-13
I've taken physics 1 with a different book (University Physics 11th Ed.) and had a A. Now in physics 2 I'm having a hard time because of this new book. The previous book was easy to understand, had plenty of examples and was entertaining to read for a physics book. I have to use that book to understand the class material. I have nothing good to say about this book, however. From page one it starts sentence after sentence of worthless facts and poorly explained ideas. Many people in my class feel that we will be switching back to the other book and the book store is stocking the other book for next semester instead of this one. I'm sure Wolfson can teach physics in person but for a writer he kinda sucks. Don't bother writing another edition, we aren't going to use it at NMT.
Incredibly easy to learn from.......2007-08-19
I took summer courses in introductory physics over the summer, and the two volumes of this book were the prescribed textbooks. Never have I found it as easy to learn material from a textbook as with these two books. Most everything is explained in a clear manner (even if some figures are a little confusing), and mathematical justification is given for most of the claims in the book. It's also good about making sure you get the right idea of what's being learned right off the bat, introducing vectors and light calculus usage early. Honestly, I think these books even helped my understanding of Calculus grow, and I've already taken several upper division math courses. I would highly recommend these volumes (or, if they ever come together in one book, that) to anyone looking to learn introductory physics.
Not even close.......2007-02-22
I have nothing but hatred for this poorly constructed book. I am a second year EE student with some prior Physics experience. This book has brought me nothing but frustration. Easy concepts are explained in detail, while advanced concepts get a short blurb. The information is poorly organized and structured and often takes other sources to understand the concept fully. I also found an error in Chapter 2 in one of the derivations of the equations. Though insignificant, it begs the question, what else was overlooked? In addition our professor has opted to use the "Mastering Physics" online tool as a daily homework assignment. This review will not delve into the infinite obscenities reserved for that component, as it is not part of the book as a reference, but let it be noted that it does nothing to save this book from the feelings I have already. If it's possible to avoid this book, I advise one to do so.
content matches the title.......2006-11-13
some odd 25 years ago i took an undergraduate course in physics based on the 3 volumes of Alonso-Finn "Fundamental university physics".
Keen to brush up on my rusty knowledge of classical physics i've been browsing the market searching for a present-day introductory university course on physics. This book more than fulfilled my expectations.
It's comprehensive, concise, well-structured, a joy to read, and above all, from an educational point of view, the best book on physics i've ever read. It's so easy as a student to get the wrong conceptions in your head, and once they're there, they usually stay there for a very long time. Richard Wolfson brilliantly avoids this pitfall - he knows exactly where students are likely to misinterpret certain equations or ideas in physics, and he does a splendid job making sure the students get all "the big ideas" right from the start.
I would not only recommend this book to students of physics, but to everyone interested in the most beautiful of all sciences. If only there were more educators the likes of R. Wolfson.

Book Description
This English version of Klail City y sus alrededores, the pivotal novel in the Klail City series, won the prestigious prize in Latin American fiction, Casa de las Américas, for the best Spanish American novel in 1976.
Book Description
Welcome to Klail City, in Belken County, along the Mexico border in Texas' Rio Grande Valley. In the weeks leading up to the Democratic primary, Jehu Malacara chronicles the political rabble-rousing of Klail City's wealthiest citizens in letters to his cousin Rafe Buenrostro. Led by Arnold "Noddy" Perkins, the who's who of Belken County create a complex web of relationships. Wrangling bank loans, club memberships, and local politics, Perkins dominates the political and economic landscape of the community.
When Malacara turns up missing, and the writer, P. Galindo, begins interviewing the citizens, tales of deceit and betrayal float to the surface. From Jehu's knockout girlfriend Ollie to up-and-coming socialite Becky Escobar and even to old man Perkins himself, Hinojosa offers a feast of quirky characters and misdeeds.
Part epistolary, part mystery novel, the population of Klail City makes an indelible impression. With an introduction by Hinojosa scholar Manuel Martín-Rodríguez, a professor at University of California - Merced, this volume combines for the first time the English and Spanish-language versions of the novel that creates a fictitious community that The New York Times compared to Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha and Marquez's Macondo.
Book Description
This novel in Hinojosa's Klail City Death Trip Series of novels, which follows generations of Anglos and Mexicans in the fictional Klail City, Texas, focuses on a character who has previously not taken the limelight: Becky Escobar.

The Valley.......2006-05-19
Rolando Hinojosa, born in Mercedes Texas, in 1929, is one of the best-known contemporary Chicano writers....Hinojosa's work depicts the autonomous Chicano culture of the Rio Grande Valley and its modes of coping with the separate Anglo world. Our author is a master portraitist whose deft and concise use of language enables him to describe events, personages, and mores. His style makes strategic use of documents to create a fiction of alleged veracity. Ultimately, the conflicts that the author exposes and develops are resolved with his characteristically wry, ironic humor.
