                Book Description

                These proceedings continue the series edited in the framework of the traditional triennial International Conference on Electrical Bio-Impedance (ICEBI), the most important platform for presenting recent scientific achievements in the area of electrical bio-impedance. The XIII ICEBI was held from Aug. 29th – Sept. 02nd 2007 at the Graz University of Technology in Graz, Austria. As already in previous years the 13th ICEBI was held together with the 8th Conference on Electrical Impedance Tomography, the annual meeting for biomedical impedance imaging. Consequently, the proceedings also contain many contributions from this very important and challenging branch of bioimpedance research.

                When compared to previous ICEBIs we notice a slight reduction of publications dedicated to purely theoretical models of bioimpedance phenomena while there was a significant increase of presentations on non-contacting and multimodal imaging technologies, cellular applications and specific biomedical applications. Among the latter pulmonary monitoring, multi-segmental BIA and cellular applications should be especially mentioned as obviously being in the transition from basic research to clinical usefulness.

                The growth of interest for bioimpedance research is also reflected by two additional facts, namely the foundation of the International Society for Electrical Bio-Impedance (ISEBI) at the preceding conference 2004 in Gdansk and the kind endorsement of the 13th ICEBI by the IFMBE and its offer to publish scientific papers in the series of IFMBE proceedings.

                    Book Description

                    Applications of Plant Cell and Tissue Culture Chairman: Y. Yamada 1988 Interest in all aspects of plant cell and tissue culture is expanding rapidly as the technologies available improve and the commercial potential of these processes becomes apparent. This book covers basic plant physiology and cytology and extends to the practical exploitation of plants, both as crops per se and as sources of useful compounds produced as secondary metabolites. The reduction of plants to single cells or tissues that can be maintained in culture facilitates their manipulation by the techniques of molecular biology. Genes encoding desirable traits, for example herbicide or pathogan resistance or early flowering, can be introduced into domesticated crops by transformation of normal plant cells using a natural vector such as Agrobacterium, by the uptake of DNA into protoplasts using techniques developed for animal cells, or by direct injection of DNA into intact cells with cell walls. Application of these technologies to forest trees is especially important because the long lifespan of these species makes their improvement by conventional breeding programmes very slow. Problems of commercial exploitation considered include the storage of genetically engineered material until progeny evaluation has been completed, the stability of traits in culture, and the feasibility of adapting laboratory methods to large-scale production plants. There is also some discussion of the sociolegal aspects of genetic engineering of crop plants, and of the difficulties of marketing `natural' compounds produced by cells under artificial conditions. 4 out of 5 stars Into The Polar Zones.......2003-12-09

                    In my youth, I became fascinated by the Antarctic when I saw documentaries on the International Geophysical Year exploration and study of the southern continent on Disneyland, the flagship television show of Walt Disney in those years. I remember most the snow vehicles traversing the ice and the concern over hidden crevasses in the ice. And although I fancy myself a warm-weather lover with an aversion to prolonged cold and snow, I have kept that fascination with the polar regions through my life.

                    In The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Arctic and Antarctic, author Jack Williams, editor of the USA Today weather page and author of The USA Today Weather Book and co-author of Hurricane Watch: Forecasting the Deadliest Storms on Earth, I was able to again revisit those frontier regions. I have enjoyed William's other works and looked forward to another well-written, informative book. I was not disappointed.

                    The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Arctic and Antarctic is an overview of the two opposite ends of the Earth functioning as a specialized encyclopedia of information on the polar regions from history, geography, science and even employment and tourist opportunities. The book is divided into six parts:

                    * Meet the Polar Regions Life in the Polar Regions
                    * Going to the Ends of the Earth
                    * The Polar Regions Today
                    * Today's Polar Science
                    * The Polar Regions and the Rest of the World

                    Each part contains a number of sub-chapters looking in greater depth at particular topics relevant to the main topic at hand for both the Arctic and Antarctic. The book can be read straight through or by jumping around to topics of interest. Thus, it will prove useful as a reference book for many polar topics. The book is liberally spiced with sidebar tables, definitions of terminology right where the terms are used, and useful illustrations (though not of the quality of The USA Today Weather Book). History buffs will find the exploration history overviews sending them out to read more detailed accounts of the searches for polar passages or the quest for the glory of being the first to stand at the ultimate global ends.

                    The book falls within the series The Complete Idiot's Guides, each of which stands as an educational work with the foremost intent of introducing the subject to those not currently knowledgeable in the topic. The "Complete Idiot" portion of the series title is a bit tongue-in-cheek and a good marketing gambit in our self-deprecating world. However, having read Williams' treatment of the subject in The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Arctic and Antarctic, I think you could be a nearly complete idiot and still understand his writing, coming away with a new-found knowledge base. Even for those who consider ourselves on the opposite end of the knowledge spectrum, there is much to learn here, and Williams does not bore us with oversimplicity.

                    With the polar regions so often in the news these days, whether through ozone depletion, climate change, new discoveries, or daring rescues of ill members of the Antarctic research colonies, you are well-advised to consider reading this book as background material. You may even find you too are a polar enthusiast and will begin to search out other, more detailed works.

                    The Complete Idiot's Guide to the Arctic and Antarctic is the best overview of the polar regions I have read since Isaac Azimov's The Ends of the Earth, and likely better in its breadth. It will be at close reach on my reference shelf. I highly recommend it to all my readers.

                    Book Description

                    Following the style of The Physics Companion and The Electronics Companion, this book is a revision aid and study guide for undergraduate students in physics and engineering. It consists of a series of one-page-per-topic descriptions of the key concepts covered in a typical first-year "mathematics for physics" course. The emphasis is placed on relating the mathematical principles being introduced to real-life physical problems. In common with the other companions, there is strong use of figures throughout to help in understanding of the concepts under consideration. The book will be an essential reference and revision guide, particularly for those students who do not have a strong background in mathematics when beginning their degree.

                    I purchased the book, because it was required for a class (among other books) that I am attending in the graduate school (a refreshment course for people that has been away from college for a while). The definitions are short and to the point; clear and precise. So far I have found two typos, but I guess that means that the refreshment is working. In sumary, It is a great book, highly recommended.

                      Book Description

                      One of Doyle's favorite novels, set in medieval England beginning in 1348. A young squire, Sir Nigel, wishing to revive his ancestor's traditions vows to perform three noble deeds before claiming the hand of his love. The book is full of adventure, and lots of historical detail, such as the fact that forks had not yet been invented in 1348.

                          Each poetically descriptive sentence is as a brushstroke that paints a colorful, lively picture of the scenery, landscape, characters, and events. You can picture everything very vividly in your mind. The characaters were each unique and fascinating. The story unfolded quite differently than I would have expected for a book about a war. It was a beautifully constructed story; an education about chivalry and how wars used to be fought. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this book, and hope to re-read it in the future.

                          2 out of 5 stars Of another time.......2007-03-08

                          An 18th century author writing about the dark ages. It reads more like incidents within a narrative rather than a single story. I found the ending abrupt and not credible. I expected more of the creator of Sherlock Holmes.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff!.......2006-09-05

                          I loved this book as a kid, and found new depths to it when I came back to it as an adult. A must-read! The breadth of imagination and the color and vividness of the descriptions are hard to match, and the characters are memorable -- Samkin Aylward the master-archer is my favorite.

                          5 out of 5 stars Thank you Louis Lamour .......2006-05-23

                          I discovered the White Company while reading Louis Lamour's "Education of A Wondering Man". It was included in Lamours reading list from the 1930's. On a lark i checked it out.

                          What a gem this book is! I simply could not put it down. The language, the characters, the history and the humor simply crackle off the pages.

                          If you have a son, here's your next gift.

                          5 out of 5 stars Never drags-lots of excitement- great YA or even older book.......2006-04-28

                          I can't remember how I happened on this book- probably Amazon herded me to it- but I'm quite glad. I'm more of a fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories, but I found this as enjoyable as The Black Arrow or Robin Hood or any other medieval book that I've read, and I'd never even heard of it before. The protagonist is a young man raised at the monastery who joins a band of rough but good hearted archers and follows their exploits as they head to war in France and Spain. The old agnostic (Doyle) weaves in more respect for the Catholic church than one usually sees from so-called church leaders today, combined with some common sense insights of true morality. For Doyle chivalry not only is not dead, it'll cut off the head of anyone who says otherwise. In other words, a man's word was worth something, and a man's actions were worth even more. Lots of swordplay, a little (very little) romance, some interesting and well developed characters, and an undercurrent of humor. Not as clever as the Holmes books, but a lot more action, and one learns a little English history at the same time. I'd highly, highly recommend it for kids, or anyone really, and I am amazed that it's fallen through the cracks to this point- at least for me.
