    Book Description

Continuous cultures, i.e. chemostats with an continuous dilution rate, are model ecosystems for the study of general regulation principles in plankton communities. Further to an introduction, general continuous culture methods and especially the characteristics of rotifer continuous culture systems are presented. Sections on metabolism and energetics in chemostats, growth models, competition and predator-prey interactions, as well as the application of rotifer continuous cultures to ecotoxicology and their use in aquaculture are included.

            Description:
Several studies have suggested that plants are able to control the development of specialist herbivorous invertebrates, but not that of generalists. Plants are alleged to have evolved tolerance against specialists in order to suppress the development of more damaging generalists through competition. Here, we tested whether specialist plant parasitic nematodes in the root zone of the natural dune grass Ammophila arenaria are able to suppress the development of a generalist plant parasitic nematode and therewith protect the plant. We added a generalist ectoparasite (Tylenchorhynchus ventralis) and specialist endoparasites (Heterodera arenaria, Pratylenchus penetrans, Meloidogyne maritima) in different densities to A. arenaria. We also tested whether sequential inoculation of the specialists had an additional competitive effect on T. ventralis. Our results show that the specialist endoparasitic nematodes indeed suppressed the development of the generalist T. ventralis, but only when the specialists were added to the plant in relatively high densities that exceeded the field density of the specialist endoparasitic nematodes. Therefore, we conclude that competition by specialist nematodes is not a likely mechanism for the regulation of the generalist plant parasite T. ventralis. Sequential inoculation of endoparasites did not influence the development of T. ventralis more than inoculation at the same time. Despite their inhibiting effect on the development of T. ventralis, the endoparasites did not counteract the negative effect of T. ventralis on plant biomass. On the contrary, they themselves had a negative effect on shoot biomass of A. arenaria, although no effect was found on root biomass. We discuss our results in relation to other mechanisms that may regulate the population density of T. ventralis.

              Description:
Ivy (Hedera helix L.) favours moist nutrient-rich substrates of the floodplains of Western Europe. In this study we investigated ivy dynamics in two forest reserves of the upper Rhine. The aim was to determine the influence of flooding on ivy development following the cessation of cuttings at two forest sites of contrasting flooding regimes: the Rhinau Reserve is currently flooded while the Erstein site has not been flooded for 30 years. We also examined the impacts of severe storms in 1993 and 1999 and a long-lasting flood that occurred in 1999. Our results show that the population of Rhinau was smaller and younger because ivy is severely limited by long periods of anoxia, even though it is favoured by regular short-period floods. Indeed, juvenile growth was more rapid at Rhinau where nutrient and moist conditions are more favourable than in Erstein, but mortality was higher because of the long-lasting flood of 1999. At Erstein, the ivy showed a tendency to clump around several big trees, especially oaks and ashes, which may make the host tree vulnerable to windfall. Uprooted or broken ivies were found to survive better than the fallen host tree but could not climb to another trunk highlighting a strong dependence of ivy on its hosting tree.

3 out of 5 stars Not really World History.......2007-04-01

The latter half of this book is clearly a "Western" History Almanac. It basically discusses other countries' involvements in western countries' affairs. Also, there was too much info on domestic issues in the U.S.-- that information should be reserved for the U.S. almanac!! I gave it 3/5 b/c the beginning was informational.

                5 out of 5 stars Great Reference.......2006-11-20

I learned more from this book than all my history classes. It compresses the history of humans from the beginning telling facts using diagrams and maps. It tells us how the human world evolved from nothing to what it is today.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Reference Book.......2006-02-03

National Geographic Almanac of World History is a wonderful resource. The Chronological Chapters, Maps, Time-lines and Introductory Threads are easy to use. A very nice addition to add to your library.

As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. I ended up buying the Oxford Atlas of World History. Here are my picks and rankings.

Listed by My ranking, #1 is the best, #2 is a creative alternative but no substitute.

                1. Atlas of World History, Oxford University Press 2002, 368 pages, (...), 13.5" x 10.3" x 1.62" ranked 46,632 on Amazon.com. Hands down winner - professional - good text descriptions, outstanding maps and drawings, covers most things from the cave man forward. Negatives: Big and heavy. If you want to save a few dollars buy the "concise" version.

                2. Creative alternative: The Penguin Atlas of World History, Penguin Books 2004, (...), just a paperback sized, just published, 304 pages. Surprisingly impressive, lots of text and pictures mixed together and it is easy to carry around. A nice quick alternative but it will be printed in two volumes.

                3. Timelines of World History, DK Publishing 2002, 666 pages, (...). 10.0" x 1.6" ranked 25,800 on Amazon.com. Second with lots of value but in some ways not as comprehensive.

                4. National Geographic Almanac of World History, National Geographic 2003, 384 pages, (...), 9.6" x 7.8" x 1.17" ranked 24,426 on Amazon.com. Similar to but less impressive than Oxford books. More text, narrower coverage, fewer maps and drawings.

                5. DK Atlas of World History, DK Publishing, 352 pages,(...), 10.96" x 14.66" x 1.28" ranked 10,716 on Amazon.com. My last place book seems like a giant comic book. I love the DK travel books but this seems like one step beyond DK's area of expertise. Superficially it is similar to the Oxford book and it is cheap, and some might like it but it tries to be politically correct and fails.

                6. Oxford Dictionary of World History, Oxford University Press, 704 pages, (...), pocketbook sized, sales rank 330,000. Mainly terms, people, and dates but has a few maps also. Limited use but an alternative. I prefer the new Penguin book but this is the best history dictionary to buy.

                        Book Description

After a brief outline of magnetohydrodynamic theory, this introductory book discusses the macroscopic aspects of MHD turbulence, and covers the small-scale scaling properties. Applications are provided for astrophysical and laboratory systems. Magnetic turbulence is the natural state of most astrophysical systems, such as stellar convection zones, stellar winds or accretion discs. It is also found in laboratory devices, most notably in the reversed field pinch.

                        Download Description

This book presents an introduction to, and modern account of, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence, an active field both in general turbulence theory and in various areas of astrophysics. The book starts by introducing the MHD equations, certain useful approximations and the transition to turbulence. The second part of the book covers incompressible MHD turbulence, the macroscopic aspects connected with the different self-organization processes, the phenomenology of the turbulence spectra, two-point closure theory, and intermittency. The third considers two-dimensional turbulence and compressible (in particular, supersonic) turbulence. Because of the similarities in the theoretical approach, these chapters start with a brief account of the corresponding methods developed in hydrodynamic turbulence. The final part of the book is devoted to astrophysical applications: turbulence in the solar wind, in accretion disks, and in the interstellar medium. This book is suitable for graduate students and researchers working in turbulence theory, plasma physics and astrophysics.

                          Book Description

Fluid flow research is a rapidly growing technological field, with extensive research in many areas. This compilation of technical papers explores recent avenues of research in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows—and the different aspects of both electroconductive and nonconductive fluids—in one complete volume. Drawing from the Eighth Beer-Sheva International Seminar on MHD Flows and Turbulence, Branover and Unger review more than 65 technical papers covering such topics as turbulent flows, energy conversion, and hydrodynamic and MHD flows. Held every three years since 1975, the Beer-Sheva seminars are widely recognized for their research-oriented focus as well as for the forum for information exchange throughout the international community. Each chapter presents a concise and comprehensive picture of experimental and theoretical research presently moving the field. Progress in Fluid Flow Research: Turbulence and Applied MHD provides a strong reference for any reader with a desire to follow the latest trends in this burgeoning area.

                                Book Description

This book gives the first comprehensive overview of turbulence modelling from both the conventional and statistical-theoretical viewpoints. The mathematical structures of primary turbulence models such as algebraic (turbulent-viscosity-type), second-order, and subgrid-scales ones are elucidated, and the relationship between them is shown systematically. This approach is extended to turbulent or mean-field dynamo that plays an important role in the study of the generation and sustainment mechanisms of magnetic fields in astro-geophysical and fusion phenomena. Finally, turbulence modelling is shown to be a concept possessing a wide range of applicability in both the practical and academic senses. Readers are expected to have a basic knowledge of fluid mechanics at a graduate level and beyond. The important properties of turbulence necessary for turbulence modelling, however, are explained in a self-consistent manner. This book is therefore suited for both graduate students and researchers who are interested in turbulence modelling and turbulent dynamo.

                                    Book Description

This book is of interest to researchers in astrophysics and the planetary sciences. It surveys the current knowledge on the propagation of nonlinear waves and the development of a turbulent dynamics in magnetohydrodynamic flows. The authors emphasize how the theoretical understanding of MHD waves and turbulence is related to the description of media where the presence of an ambient magnetic field is known to play an essential role. These effects are important in the physics of various space plasmas such as the magnetosphere, the solar wind, the solar corona, the interplanetary and interstellar media, etc. The authors treat fundamental aspects as revealed by asymptotic analysis, numerical simulations, and observations in the solar wind.

                                        Book Description

Small-scale structures in turbulent flows appear as a subtle mixture of order and chaos that could play an important role in the energetics. The aim here is a better understanding of the similarities and differences between vortex and current dynamics, and of the influence of these structures on the statistical and transport properties of hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic turbulence, with special concern for fusion plasmas, and solar or magnetospheric environments. Special emphasis is given to the intermittency at inertial scales and to the coherent structures at small scales. Magnetic reconnection and the dynamo effect are also discussed, together with the effect of stratification and inhomogeneity. Book Description

The present set of lectures is devoted to magnetohydrodynamic turbulence in astrophysics with strong emphasis on numerical simulations. The book strives for a balance between state-of-the-art reports and a tutorial approach. It is thus particularly suited as an introduction to the field for nonspecialist researchers and postgraduate students, while experienced scientists will find the book to be a comprehensive source of reference for their research.

                                          Book Description

The cast of this unabridged version of Hamlet includes Anton Lesser who plays Hamlet, Edward de Souza, Susan Engel, Emma Fielding and Heathcote Williams.

                                          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Hamlet, Prince of Denmark CD set.......2003-03-09

It's hard to believe the producers of this version could have allowed it to continue much beyond Anton Lesser's first appearance on the parapets. While the rest of the cast comes up with credible performances, his Hamlet is perhaps the worst I have ever heard. He has but two means of projecting his character: either by emoting faster than a speeding bullet or whispering his lines as indistinctly as possible. I alone am at fault for buying this CD set but in the future I'll be very careful whenever I see his name as part of the cast and will make sure I have permission to return it before purchasing. Dreadful!
