    Book Description

As any police officer who has ever walked a beat or worked a crime scene knows, the street has its hot spots, patterns, and rhythms: drug dealers work their markets, prostitutes stroll their favorite corners, and burglars hit their favorite neighborhoods. But putting all the geographic information together in cases of serial violent crime (murder, rape, arson, bombing, and robbery) is highly challenging. Just ask the homicide detectives of the Los Angeles Police Department who hunted the Hillside Stranglers, or law enforcement officers in Louisiana who tracked the brutal South Side rapist. Geographic Profiling introduces and explains this cutting-edge investigative methodology in-depth. Used to analyze the locations of a connected series of crimes to determine the most likely area of offender residence, geographic profiling allows investigators and law enforcement officers to more effectively manage information and focus their investigations. This extensive and exhaustive work explains geographic profiling theories and principles, and includes an extensive review of the literature and research in the areas of criminal profiling, forensic behavioral science, serial violent crime, environmental criminology, and the geography of crime. For investigators and police officers deployed in the field, as well as criminal analysts, Geographic Profiling is a "must have" reference.

    5 out of 5 stars a must-have for investigators.......2006-08-20

For those who don't know the name, Rossmo is the detective / mathematician whose pioneering work on criminal profiling in Canada has helped re-shape the way investigators worldwide track down serial offenders. By mathematically studying the location and distribution of crimes, Rossmo developed a way of pinpointing the most likely location of the offender's home base. This book explains his work.

Written as a textbook, "Geographic Profiling" is clearly organized, packed with well-documented research, and is both theoretical enough to satisfy university researchers and practical enough to inform the rest of us. The book can at times be dense and a little tough to wade through, but it's worth it.

Even though you might gulp when you see the inexplicably high price tag on this book, if you're interested in understanding geographic profiling and the different ways that temporal and spatial crime distribution can assist in investigation, pick up a copy. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Ground breaking and well researched.......2002-05-17

This book is a real innovation in the field of crime research. The area of criminal profiling is populated by no shortage of Walter Mittys with no empirical grounding, so is it refreshing to find a text that cements the theories of this complex and fascinating area with empirical analysis of real cases. The text is well written and opens up a new area of criminal behaviour analysis to students and police officers alike. This book will undoubtedly become a key text in the field of criminal profiling and a welcome replacement to the long list of dull criminal psychology books that do not tell you anything useful, because the ivory tower authors have no practical experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Complete Guide to the Subject.......2001-12-22

This book is packed with information and offers a complete summary of pertinent research on serial arson, serial homicide, rape, and crime paths. It is the bible of geographic profiling. You won't find a more informative, well-researched, or complete book anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A Book That Students Actually Read!.......2001-08-03

I use this book in my Geographic Profiling course and the students read it and keep it(they don't sell it after the final exam). The bibliography alone is worth the price of the book. Rossmo presents an excellent piece of cutting-edge research that is written to effectively communicate with a broad audience.

5 out of 5 stars Innovative and Comprehensive.......2000-02-03

Dr. D. Kim Rossmo has done an excellent job of presenting the theories and practice of criminal profiling in general, and geographic profiling in specific. His book is thoroughly researched and based on empirical studies which demonstrate he is a true pioneer in criminology. It should be noted that geographic profiling can only be tested on solved cases, since it is essential to know where the criminal lives to prove of the validity of any geographic profiling methodology. Dr. Rossmo has proven that geographic profiling is a useful tool to support investigations of serial crimes. Well-written, comprehensive, and innovative--this work could be used as a textbook in any criminology class covering the field of criminal profiling.

          Description:
The aim of the current article is to review the theoretical, empirical, and practical issues related to the spatial behavior of sex offenders. After describing three theoretical models related to geographic profiling, empirical studies are presented that investigate the links between offender characteristics, modus operandi variables, and the distances traveled by sex offenders. Different spatial typologies of sex offenders and investigative strategies that take into account the spatial component of criminal behavior are discussed.

5 out of 5 stars From Ising To Gauge Fields and Strings.......2001-11-22

This book manifests the author's unique perspective on physics.
The author claims that the profound aspect of quantum gauge fields is that they can almost be regarded as the theory of strings. These strings are in essence the Faraday flux lines.
The deeper understanding of quantum physics involving gauge fields demands the study of dynamics of quantum strings.
Quantum strings turn out to produce the graviton thus can
give a theory of quantum gravity.
These are all pioneered by the author for past three decades and
                neatly explained in this book.

This volume is intended as a systematic introduction to gauge field theory for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in high energy physics. The discussion is restricted to the classical (non-quantum) theory in Minkowski spacetime. Particular attention has been given to conceptual aspects of field theory, accurate definitions of basic physical notions, and thorough analysis of exact solutions to the equations of motion for interacting systems. Two theories covered by the book in great detail are the Maxwell-Lorentz electrodynamics and Yang-Mills-Wong theory.

                  Book Description

Based on a highly regarded lecture course at Moscow State University, this is a clear and systematic introduction to gauge field theory. It is unique in providing the means to master gauge field theory prior to the advanced study of quantum mechanics. Though gauge field theory is typically included in courses on quantum field theory, many of its ideas and results can be understood at the classical or semi-classical level. Accordingly, this book is organized so that its early chapters require no special knowledge of quantum mechanics. Aspects of gauge field theory relying on quantum mechanics are introduced only later and in a graduated fashion--making the text ideal for students studying gauge field theory and quantum mechanics simultaneously.

The book begins with the basic concepts on which gauge field theory is built. It introduces gauge-invariant Lagrangians and describes the spectra of linear perturbations, including perturbations above nontrivial ground states. The second part focuses on the construction and interpretation of classical solutions that exist entirely due to the nonlinearity of field equations: solitons, bounces, instantons, and sphalerons. The third section considers some of the interesting effects that appear due to interactions of fermions with topological scalar and gauge fields. Mathematical digressions and numerous problems are included throughout. An appendix sketches the role of instantons as saddle points of Euclidean functional integral and related topics.

Perfectly suited as an advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate text, this book is an excellent starting point for anyone seeking to understand gauge fields.

This work, which is not so well-known, gives a good
introduction in gauge field theory. Starting from scalar
fields quickly more advanced subjects such as magnetic monopoles, the higgs mechanism and spontaneous symmetry breaking are discussed.
The work contains nice overviews of the mathematics of Lie groups and Lie algebras and has a number of useful exercises.

5 out of 5 stars This book is a gem!.......2005-07-06

If you are reading this review you are probably familiar with field theory and learned it in a quantum field theory class or book. If not go ahead and read THIS book, it is a must BEFORE a QFT a class. I wish I had it a few years ago, I would learn QFT much easier. Still it clarified a lot of things and recommended for every theoretical physics student. You will at least recognize what is related to quantum aspects and what is not.

                    Book Description

In this book the authors develop and work out applications to gravity and gauge theories and their interactions with generic matter fields, including spinors in full detail. Spinor fields in particular appear to be the prototypes of truly gauge-natural objects, which are not purely gauge nor purely natural, so that they are a paradigmatic example of the intriguing relations between gauge natural geometry and physical phenomenology. In particular, the gauge natural framework for spinors is developed in this book in full detail, and it is shown to be fundamentally related to the interaction between fermions and dynamical tetrad gravity.

                    Book Description

This book is a systematic study of the classical and quantum theories of gauge systems. It starts with Dirac's analysis showing that gauge theories are constrained Hamiltonian systems. The classical foundations of BRST theory are then laid out with a review of the necessary concepts from homological algebra. Reducible gauge systems are discussed, and the relationship between BRST cohomology and gauge invariance is carefully explained. The authors then proceed to the canonical quantization of gauge systems, first without ghosts (reduced phase space quantization, Dirac method) and second in the BRST context (quantum BRST cohomology). The path integral is discussed next. The analysis covers indefinite metric systems, operator insertions, and Ward identities. The antifield formalism is also studied and its equivalence with canonical methods is derived. The examples of electromagnetism and abelian 2-form gauge fields are treated in detail.

The book gives a general and unified treatment of the subject in a self-contained manner. Exercises are provided at the end of each chapter, and pedagogical examples are covered in the text.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of quantum gauge theory.......2000-08-20

Anyone interested in how to quantize gauge theories and BRST cohomology will want to read this book. The authors do a fine job of motivating the problem and discussing in depth where the essential problems arise. The book starts naturally with a discussion of constrained Hamiltonian systems, and this chapter is especially well written as it sets up the geometry for later discussions on quantization. Most of the discussion in the next few chapters is on geometrical constructions in classical gauge field theory. The authors do a fine job of explaining how Grassman algebra constructions come into play in classical field theory. To a beginner in the subject the appearance of "spin" degrees of freedom in classical field theory may be strange at first, but the chapter on Fermi degrees of freedom alleviates any skepticism on why one should proceed this way. BRST constructions occupy the next few chapters, and here one sees the role of ghosts as being a sort of "Lagrange multiplier" in the quantization of constrained systems. The authors discuss path integral quantization in the last chapters of the book, and do so in a way that is mostly formal, given that path integrals are not well defined from a mathematical standpoint. By far the best part of this discussion is on the Koszul-Tate complex and how it is related to the Schwinger-Dyson equations. It would take a lot of searching in the journal literature to obtain the knowledge gained from the reading of this book. Definitely a fine addition to the literature on this very difficult topic.
