4 out of 5 stars A nice book to learn about Ethology and Animal Behavior.......2000-10-13

I'm glad I found this book. It is a very good text to start learning abou animal behavior and ethology. I had the impression tha this book is easier to read and more organized than other books about the subject, especially if you have a Psychology background, since it's approach to the subject dosen't require a lot of Zoology knowledge from the reader, as other books on the subject do.

    Book Description

Studies of animal behavior often assume that all members of a species exhibit the same behavior. Geographic Variation in Behavior shows that, on the contrary, there is substantional variation within species across a wide range of taxa. Including work from pioneers in the field, this volume provides a balanced overview of research on behavioral characteristics that vary geographically. The authors explore the mechanisms by which behavioral differences evolve and examine related methodological issues. Taken together, the work collected here demonstrates that genetically based geographic variation may be far more widespread than previously suspected. The book also shows how variation in behavior can illuminate both behavioral evolution and general evolutionary patterns. Unique among books on behavior in its emphasis on geographic variation, this volume is a valuable new resource for students and researchers in animal behavior and evolutionary biology.

        Book Description

Why do animals play? Play has been described in animals as diverse as reptiles, birds and mammals, so what benefits does it provide and how did it evolve? Careful, quantitative studies of social, locomotor and object play behavior are now beginning to answer these questions and shed light on many other aspects of both animal and human behavior. This unique interdisciplinary volume brings together the major findings about play in a wide range of species including humans. Topics about play include the evolutionary history of play, play structure, function and development, and sex and individual differences. Animal Play is destined to become the benchmark volume in this subject for many years to come, and will provide a source of inspiration and understanding for students and researchers in behavioral biology, neurobiology, psychology and anthropology.

4 out of 5 stars great review on play.......2006-11-04

Very good approach to play behaviour. Lots of information on ontogeny, proximate mechanisms and function of different types of play behaviour over a wide range of animals, including humans. Would suit psychologists, anthropologists, zoologists, neurologists and behaviourists in general, undergraduates or academics. Fluid enough as review but plenty of information on more detailed subjects.

          Book Description

Despite the depiction of nature "red in tooth and claw," cooperation is actually widespread in the animal kingdom. Various types of cooperative behaviors have been documented in everything from insects to primates, and in every imaginable ecological scenario. Yet why animals cooperate is
still a hotly contested question in literature on evolution and animal behavior.
This book examines the history surrounding the study of cooperation, and proceeds to examine the conceptual, theoretical and empirical work on this fascinating subject. Early on, it outlines the four different categories of cooperation -- reciprocal altruism, kinship, group-selected cooperation and
byproduct mutualism -- and ties these categories together in a single framework called the Cooperator's Dilemma. Hundreds of studies on cooperation in insects, fish, birds and mammals are reviewed. cooperation in this wide array of taxa includes, but is not limited to, cooperative hunting,
anti-predator behavior, foraging, sexual coalitions, grooming, helpers-at-the nest, territoriality, 'policing' behavior and group thermoregulation. Each example outlined is tied back to the theoretical framework developed early on, whenever the data allows. Future experiments designed to further
elucidate a particular type of cooperation are provided throughout the book.

5 out of 5 stars Great content - not a durable book, though.......2006-02-01

Okay, let me get a few things out of the way up front. First off, I generally hate textbooks. I've been in college 6 years and counting, and it's fair to say that most textbooks (regardless of subject) are written and edited in a very clueless fashion. Second, though I have many personal interests in the realm of science (quantum mechanics, string theory, and so on), it's often a major chore to study 100-level science at a university. Doubly so if it's a scientific subject you have no interest in - which in my case would be geology.

Back to the topic at hand, this book counters all of what I just said. This is an outstanding textbook by any standard. I'd even recommend it for non-students who have an interest in geology and earth science. Combined with a good instructor, this book makes an excellent resource and a surprisingly enjoyable read. I had virtually no personal interest in geology going into the class, but this book communicates a good deal of practical knowledge as well as just plain interesting trivia.

I do have some issues with the book in a physical sense. Content-wise, /How Does Earth Work/ is fantastic. But the design of the book is troublesome. It's large, unwieldy, and the cover is very flimsy. A book this size should really be hardcover, because the glossy pages are just too vulnerable to folds and tears even with careful use. I take good care of my books, and don't just randomly slop them into my backpack. Even with all my efforts to keep the book in tact, it already has minor creases in the cover, bent corners on pages, and other slight damage. This is after just two weeks of class, folks.

The book looks great, with all the color photos and such... But the physical design of it is not at all realistic for college use. Make peace with the fact that you're not going to be able to re-sell this book for near new price at the end of the semester. Beyond that, /How Does Earth Work/ is a great resource, and one of the very few college books I'd highly recommend to students and non-students alike.

How Does Earth Work? covers the traditional breadth of topics of the introductory geology course, but takes the non-traditional and highly-effective approach of emphasizing conceptual learning of process rather than rote memorization of facts.

There are a variety of models which can be used to study nuclear structure and dynamics. This book gives a comprehensive overview of these various models, concentrating in particular on a description of deformed and rotating nuclei. Following a treatment of the semi-empirical mass formula and nuclear stability, the liquid-drop and simple shell models are introduced and described. The spherical nuclear one-particle potential is introduced and developed to cover the case of deformed nuclei. The latter chapters of the book are devoted to discussions of barrier penetration, fast nuclear rotation, nucleon-nucleon interactions and the pairing interaction. Many problems and solutions are included, which help to illustrate key concepts. The book will be invaluable to graduate students of nuclear physics, and to anyone engaged in research in this field.

The book gives a very understandable exposition of advanced nuclear physics. Introductory books on quantum mechanics and nuclear physics might talk qualitatively about various models of the nucleus. Like the liquid drop.

But the book attempts to address the relative lack of a text that takes the discussion to the next level. Where quantitative quantum calculations are done, for such effects as the electric quadrupole moment. Some of the derivations in the text are not dissimilar from those done at the atomic or interatomic level. From those, which perhaps the student might already have met, there are such things as the ever-present spherical harmonics, and the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for mapping to new "good" quantum numbers.

Of course, there is much in the text which pertains specifically to the nucleus. So fission and alpha decay are modelled as barrier penetration effects; ie. quantum mechanical tunnelling through such a potential barrier. Leading naturally to examples of radioactive decay chains. Another effect much studied in the book is fast rotation nuclei. A fascinating and complex subject in its own right.

                        Book Description

This book focusses on basic science, but it also addresses engineers interested in new materials. Experiments on metal clusters are reviewed in two long pedagogically written articles. The theoretical courses cover three main domains: (1) electronic properties of metallic clusters and nanostructures, (2) phases and phase changes of small systems, and (3) chemical processes in nanoscale systems. Furthermore, interested readers, researchers as well as graduate students will find articles on density functional theory, magnetic properties of clusters, and computer simulations of cluster dynamics. In addition, the book addresses chemical processes, pairing correlation effects and also biological systems.

                                  Book Description

Very recently it has become possible to produce and characterize large clusters containing an exact, predetermined number of atoms. Through these efforts it has become clear that clusters containing even as many as 20,000 atoms cannot yet be considered as being tiny crystals. Their structure is often icosahedral. Their electrons are organized into shells rather than bands. In many respects the clusters behave more like giant atoms than solids. The interest in clusters has grown explosively in the last few years and there has been no lack of conferences devoted to clusters in general. However, only a few groups have begun to develop the experimental and theoretical techniques needed for the study of clusters containing 100 or more atoms. In this book, representatives from these groups have contributed tutorial chapters explaining the methods they have developed. Audience: Scientists with little experience in clusters as well as cluster experts who wish to initiate experiments on large clusters.

                                    Book Description

The Nuclear Shell Model evolved from a course on theoretical nuclear physics taught at the university of Gent. The theory is developed from tensor algebra of the angular momentum, the independent-particle model, and the state of the art of self-consistent calculations. No less than 100 problems, worked examples throughout the text, and a MS-DOS diskette including simple FORTRAN programs of numerical applications allow the student to become familiar with the methods in this field.

This collection of the work of Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) is an essential introduction to the work of one of the most original European poets of the twentieth century. It includes translations of a broad selection of his poems and his extraordinary prose, as well as some of his original English writings. A major introductory essay by Octavio Paz, a critical anthology, two posthumous "interviews," and archived illustrations are also included, revealing the world of Pessoa in all its richness.
