Good information but you have to be careful becasue it bounces between kilometers and miles, from chapter to chapter. However overall it is a good source of information but I also noticed it missed a few dates: for example when the Crime Buffer was first theorized, it tells you who theorized it but not an approximate date of whe.

5 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to the State of the Art.......2005-08-19

Crime definitely has a geographic component. The crime happens at a place with a geographical location, and the criminal must have come from some place (home, school, work) to get to the crime site, and he must have gone somewhere afterward. As early as the 1930, the 'Chicago School' began analyzing crime by sticking pins into maps on walls. By the 1970's sociologists began researching more deeply into 'mapping crime.'

Beginning in the 1960's Graphical Information Systems began to be developed for various applications, and was given a big boost by space based imagery systems.

In recent years the dramatic reduction in the price of computer processing power and the understanding of how crime mapping can be used to predict/prevent/solve crimes.

In the last very few years many of the major technical/social problems in crime mapping have been either solved or great strides have been made in finding a solution.

This book presents the state of the art in using GIS for Crime Mapping. It starts most chapters with tutorials devoted to some particular aspect, and concludes most chapters with a case study illustrating where these techniques are actually in use.

This book is a general, overall introduction to GIS and Crime Mapping. It will be of use to departmental officials and to academics beginning to work in this area. It is well written, well researched and up to date (Published: July 22, 2005).

With chapters titled "Death Tracks," "Ill Winds," and "Nuclear Nightmares," Mark Monmonier's book Cartographies of Danger is sure to appeal to anyone interested in natural or manmade disasters. But make no mistake--this book is not just another attempt to profit off of a scary topic. Mark Monmonier is a professor of geography at Syracuse University, and Cartographies of Danger is an in-depth look at the little-known science of hazard-mapping. As Professor Monmonier demonstrates, hazard-mapping is as much art as science; detailed seismic-hazard maps of California, for example, failed to indicate the potential for the disastrous Northridge earthquake of 1994. Yet despite its imperfection, hazard-mapping is a valuable exercise and one that will undoubtedly improve in the coming decades.

Cartographies of Danger doesn't restrict itself to natural hazards such as floods, earthquakes, or volcanoes; Professor Monmonier also covers crime, pollution, and radon using the same principles of hazard-mapping. His examples of hazard maps demonstrate the relationships among mapping, scientific understanding of hazards, and the perception of risk. In addition, the book gives practical advice on how to avoid geographic hazards.

    Book Description

No place is perfectly safe, but some places are more dangerous than others. Whether we live on a floodplain or in "Tornado Alley," near a nuclear facility or in a neighborhood poorly lit at night, we all co-exist uneasily with natural and man-made hazards. As Mark Monmonier shows in this entertaining and immensely informative book, maps can tell us a lot about where we can anticipate certain hazards, but they can also be dangerously misleading.

California, for example, takes earthquakes seriously, with a comprehensive program of seismic mapping, whereas Washington has been comparatively lax about earthquakes in Puget Sound. But as the Northridge earthquake in January 1994 demonstrated all too clearly to Californians, even reliable seismic-hazard maps can deceive anyone who misinterprets "known fault-lines" as the only places vulnerable to earthquakes.

Important as it is to predict and prepare for catastrophic natural hazards, more subtle and persistent phenomena such as pollution and crime also pose serious dangers that we have to cope with on a daily basis. Hazard-zone maps highlight these more insidious hazards and raise awareness about them among planners, local officials, and the public.

With the help of many maps illustrating examples from all corners of the United States, Monmonier demonstrates how hazard mapping reflects not just scientific understanding of hazards but also perceptions of risk and how risk can be reduced. Whether you live on a faultline or a coastline, near a toxic waste dump or an EMF-generating power line, you ignore this book's plain-language advice on geographic hazards and how to avoid them at your own peril.

"No one should buy a home, rent an apartment, or even drink the local water without having read this fascinating cartographic alert on the dangers that lurk in our everyday lives. . . . Who has not asked where it is safe to live? Cartographies of Danger provides the answer."—H. J. de Blij, NBC News

"Even if you're not interested in maps, you're almost certainly interested in hazards. And this book is one of the best places I've seen to learn about them in a highly entertaining and informative fashion."—John Casti, New Scientist

4 out of 5 stars DO MAPS TELL ALL.......2006-04-10

I wouldn't describe this book as one that "I couldn't put down" as they say, but it made some interesting points. Maps of dangerous areas can mislead, for example, by giving the impression that a danger is especially great in one area because it is concentrated there, even though it may actually be worse elsewhere where population density is greater. Readers may also overreact to obvious and publicized hazards, such as a power plant, while ignoring more common threats such as auto accidents. Anyone who likes maps or uses them extensively for information will get something from this publication.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book about Emergency Planning.......2004-12-12

I use this book as additional reading for my Technology in Emergency Management course. This is a great book connecting mapping, hazards, and technology. It is written so non-technical types, like me, can understand. If you are interested in disasters, hazards, vulnerability assessments, or familiar with CAMEO, ALOHA, FEMA and NRC, etc. this book should be on your bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Check this out if you like Edward Tufte (Envisioning Info.).......2000-06-15

A great overview of how to convey information through cartography. The author chooses to focus on mapping environmental hazards to demonstrate this; their may be other topics that would lend itself to the exercise but the chosen subject seems a perfect fit. Entertaining and accessible.

5 out of 5 stars A useful tool for evaluating environmental risk........1998-03-05

Monmonier, a professor of geography at Syracuse University, discusses the art and science of hazard-zone mapping, "a momentous adaptation of electronics and numerical analysis", in this clearly-written explanation of the possibilities and limitations of the new cartographic genre.
Assuming no special cartographic knowledge on the part of the reader, the author begins with the basics of scale in map-making, and proceeds to explore the ways in which tornadoes, earthquakes, environmental pollution hazards, crime, and other risks are analyzed and translated into usable graphical form.
Noting that "it is wise to question the map maker's motives", Monmonier also encourages the reader to view risk-maps with some healthy skepticism as "partly rhetorical,,,social constructions" which "can always be manipulated".
With numerous charts, graphs, and maps, Monmonier's work is highly recommended as a clear exposition of geographic hazards and a useful tool for evaluating one's own level of risk.

          Book Description

One of the key methods of reducing and dealing with criminal activity is to accurately gauge and then analyse the geographical distribution of crime (from small scale to large scale areas). Once the police and government know what areas suffer most from criminal activity they can assess why this is the case and then deal with it in the most effective way. Crime mapping and the spatial analysis of crime data have become recognised as powerful tools for the study and control of crime. Much of the emerging demand for more information and detailed crime pattern analysis have been driven by legislative changes, such as the UK's new Crime and Disorder Act which has placed a joint statutory duty on Police Forces and Local Authorities to produce crime and disorder audits for their areas. The book sets out methods used in the fields of Geographical Information Systems and highlights areas of best practice, examines the types of problems to which spatial crime analysis can be applied, reviews the capabilities and limitations of existing techniques, and explores the future directions of spatial crime analysis and the need for training. It centres on a series of case studies highlighting the experiences of academics and practitioners in agencies centrally involved in the partnership approach to crime prevention. Practitioners and academics not only in the UK but also worldwide should be interested in the book as an up-to-date information resource and a practical guide.

                Book Description

This book treats three topics of electronic quantum transport in mesoscopic semiconductor structures: the conductance in strongly interacting and disordered two-dimensional systems and the metal insulator transition, electron transport through quantum dots and quantum rings in the Coulomb-blockade regime, and scanning probe experiments on semiconductor nanostructures at cryogenic temperatures. In addition it gives a brief historical account of electron transport from Ohm's law through transport in semiconductor nanostructures, and a review of cryogenic scanning probe techniques applied to semiconductor nanostructures. Both graduate students and researchers in the field of mesoscopic semiconductors or in semiconductor nanostructures will find this book useful.

                Book Description

Transport in Nanostructures reviews the results of experimental research into mesoscopic devices, and develops a detailed theoretical framework for understanding their behavior. The authors discuss the key observable phenomena in nanostructures, including phase interference and weak localization. They then describe quantum confined systems, transmission in nanostructures, quantum dots and single electron phenomena. Separate chapters cover interference in diffusive transport and temperature decay of fluctuations, and a chapter on nonequilibrium transport and nanodevices concludes the book. Throughout, Ferry and Goodnick interweave experimental results with the appropriate theoretical formalism. Profusely illustrated, the book will be of great interest to graduate students taking courses in mesoscopic physics or nanoelectronics, as well as to researchers working on semiconductor nanostructures or the development of new ultrasmall devices.

4 out of 5 stars quantum phenomena are arising in small devices.......2006-02-24

As device sizes shrink on chips, earlier assumptions made in modelling electron and hole transport are starting to break down. Ferry explores the many consequences of this. Now that we can use lithography and associated techniques to make devices less than 0.1 micron, quantum effects can arise.

These might include a two dimensional electron gas, where one spatial dimension is essentially suppressed by the heterostructure. Perhaps under the gate of an experimental transistor. Other contexts might be fluctuations in the atomic distribution seen by a transport electron or hole. This might importantly include fluctuations in how dopants are arranged. Leading to regions of differing conductance.

Ferry investigates these and other phenomena like quantum wires and dots, at a level well placed for the graduate student or researcher.
