This book rocks!.......2003-10-22

I've always been interested in geology but never educated in it. I hung with geology types in the caving club at the University of Missouri-Rolla but was never able to understand the significance when they'd remark on the Roubidoux sandstone or Gasconade Dolomite. I have an old copy of Vinyard's "Geologic Wonders and Curiosities of Missouri" and was always teased by his mention of those and many other formations throughout that book.

He and Unklesbay makes up for it in this book! All the rocks in Missouri, from bottom to top, are given their due -- what they are and how they got here, and what they're good for. And without having to try too hard, I even managed to memorize all the basic geologic ages, eras, and epochs that had always muddled me.

This book shows its age in some ways, though I'm not qualified to judge how badly. I have read about interesting research into the Weaubleau and Crooked Creek structures identifying them as potential meteor strikes, e.g., whereas this book identifies them as explosive in orgin. In fairness, some of that research is very new, if I recall correctly.

The section about economically important geologic resources is all about numbers and recoverability without any thought given to the ecologic and cultural damage widespread mining can cause. But in fairness, that's not the aim or purpose of this book, and neither are those concerns overtly slighted. Keep in mind the age of this book, too, when reading about Missouri mining industries. The lead belt still produces, but the Pea Ridge iron mine has been shuttered, or so says my Internet research.

Okay, now that I've shown balance by pointing out some shortcomings, I can now highly recommend that you read this book if you're curious but uninformed about the mid-continent region geology. It is exactly the book I was looking for.

Missouri Complete.......2000-06-25

I have quite a collection of regional geologies. This volume is, by far, the best organized and complete one I've seen. If you have any interest in the geology of Missouri or the mid-continent area, I'd strongly recommend it.

This second edition of Modeling and Computation of Boundary Layer Flows extends the topic to include compressible flows including the energy equation and non-constant fluid properties in the continuity and momentum equations. The necessary additions are included in new chapters, leaving the first nine chapters to serve as an introduction to incompressible flows that can be used as an introduction to computational fluid dynamics with emphasis on the solution of the boundary-layer equations and the modeling and computation of boundary-layer flows. It also provides readers with a good understanding of the basic principles of fluid dynamics and numerical methods. A variety of readers, including undergraduate and graduate students, teachers or scientists working in aerodynamics or hydrodynamics will find the text interesting. The subjects covered in this book include laminar and, turbulent boundary layers and laminar–turbulent transition. The viscous–inviscid coupling between the boundary layer and the inviscid flow is also addressed. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible flows are considered. Physical and numerical aspects of boundary-layer flows are described in detail and a large number of homework problems are included. The book is accompanied by computer programs to solve boundary layer equations, the Orr-Sommerfeld equation and to compute transitions. Those programs can be used for classroom work but also for industry applications. Additional programs for three-dimensional flows are available from the first author.

It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A608704. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Epitaxial n-type 4H-silicon carbide (SiC) is irradiated with 2 MeV protons to evaluate the dislocation damage effects on the optical and electrical characteristics of the material. The optical properties of the material are investigated using temperature-dependant photoluminescence (PL) and the effects of proton irradiation on the electrical properties are evaluated using current- voltage measurements and constant-voltage deep level transient spectroscopy (CV- DLTS). Subsequent high-temperature thermal annealing and recovery of the irradiated material is investigated over the temperature range of 900-1500 deg C. Proton-induced irradiation damage is apparent in the 4H-SiC material, affecting both the optical and electrical characteristics of the devices. The radiative behavior of the nitrogen-related near band edge transitions is significantly reduced as a result of the irradiation with partial recovery observed after high-temperature thermal annealing at 1500 deg C. A deeper trapping complex (EC-ET 380 meV) is detected as a result of irradiation and shows signs of activation due to thermal annealing. Initial indications taken from I-V measurements of the Schottky diodes reveal that proton irradiation followed by thermal annealing at 900 deg C may, in fact, enhance the rectifying device characteristics. Increasing the anneal temperature (TA = 1300 deg C) causes the device to fail entirely. Further annealing of the irradiated 4H-SiC at 1500 deg C demonstrates recovery in the rectifying behavior of the material.

Robert Louis Stevenson is best known for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but he also created a remarkably varied collection of short stories. This Dover Thrift Edition, titled The Body Snatcher and Other Tales, offers three tales: The Body Snatcher (1881), The Merry Men (1884), and The Bottle Imp (1890).

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century grave robbers provided stolen corpses to medical schools for dissection in anatomy classes. On occasion grave robbers took short cuts, apprehending and murdering individuals on lonely backstreets in London, rather than making a somewhat arduous and risky journey to a rural cemetery. The Body Snatcher is one of Stevenson's most popular short stories, and has been published in many anthologies, especially collections of horror stories.

The Merry Men are not inebriated revelers and party-goers, but a local name for fearsome, pounding breakers along the rocky cliffs of a Scottish isle named Aros. This isolated location is the setting for a tale of greed and lunacy.

The Bottle Imp is a clever tale of a genie trapped within a round-bellied, narrow-necked, milky white glass bottle. The imprisoned imp satisfies all that the bottle owner desires - love, fame, fortune. But there is a catch: for if a man dies before he sells it, he must burn in hell forever. Despite this ghastly premise, Stevenson has woven an intriguing tale of love and adventure, and of good and evil.

Stevenson manages to create in a short space a dark world in which characters do terrible things without being able to help themselves. Enjoy the story on a cold, rainy winter night.

A short and not-so-sweet story.......2004-12-14

This story was very short and not exactly what I feel should be called a classic.

This is the story of a man named Fettes, who was an anatomy professor's assistant when he was younger. He would wake up every morning at 4 a.m. to pay two men who delivered a dead body for the professor's anatomy class. Fettes soon discovered that all the bodies that are coming in were victims of murder. When the men refused to deliver bodies anymore to him, he and a fellow student, named Macfarlane, became the ones who murder or dig graves for bodies.

I do not see how this short, and rather blandly told, story could be a classic. The language and the way Stevenson tells the story is often-times confusing and uninteresting. It is neither scary, nor a mystery. Look elsewhere for good reading.
