QCD and Collider Physics (Cambridge Monographs on Particle Physics, Nuclear Physics and Cosmology)
R. K. Ellis , W. J. Stirling , and B. R. Webber Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521545897 |
Book Description
One of the triumphs of modern particle physics has been the extent to which Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) has successfully accounted for the strong interaction processes observed at high-energy particle colliders, for example the production of heavy quarks and jets of particles, and the short-distance parton structure of the proton. This book gives a detailed overview of collider physics with special emphasis on the study of QCD. After a general description of the QCD Lagrangian, and the properties of asymptotic freedom and colour confinement which derive from it, the most important applications at high-energy colliders are described in detail. These include the production of jets, heavy quarks, electroweak gauge bosons and Higgs bosons. The various methods of measuring the strong coupling constant are summarised. Many of the theoretical results are calculated from first principles, and the book will be both a textbook and a valuable source of reference material for all particle physicists.Customer Reviews:

Book Description
This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM covers the RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is a world-class scientific research facility that began operation in 2000, following 10 years of development and construction. Hundreds of physicists from around the world use RHIC to study what the universe may have looked like in the first few moments after its creation. RHIC drives two intersecting beams of gold ions head-on, in a subatomic collision. What physicists learn from these collisions may help us understand more about why the physical world works the way it does, from the smallest subatomic particles, to the largest stars. Current RHIC experiments. Current experiments using the facility include BRAHMS, PHENIX, PHOBOS, and STAR.Established in 1947, the Brookhaven National Laboratory is a multi-program national laboratory operated by Brookhaven Science Associates for the U.S. Department of Energy. Located on Long Island, New York in Upton, BNL employs 3000 scientists, engineers, technicians and support staff and over 4000 guest researchers annually conduct research. Five Nobel Prizes have been awarded for discoveries made at BNL. BNL's role is to produce excellent science and advanced technology by carrying out basic and applied research in long-term, high-risk programs at the frontier of science. Coverage features dramatic color photography and extensive experimental reporting.

This up-to-date electronic book on CD-ROM covers the Proton Source, Neutrino Factory, and Muon Collider Studies at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.Fermilab, the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, a United States Department of Energy Laboratory located in Batavia, Illinois, features scientists carrying out research in high-energy physics to answer the questions: What is the universe made of? How does it work? Where did it come from? Fermilab conducts basic research into particle physics, investigating the building blocks of matter separated by the smallest distances that science has ever explored, trying to learn more about these fundamental particles and understand the forces that hold them together or force them apart. Fermilab conducts its investigations by making these particles collide. Fermilab's four-mile Tevatron, the world's highest-energy particle accelerator, can reach an energy level of 0.980 trillion electron volts (TeV) for each of its particle beams: clockwise-circulating protons and anticlockwise-circulating antiprotons. The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel: From Richardson to George Eliot
Leah Price Manufacturer: Cambridge University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0521539390 |
Book Description
The Anthology and the Rise of the Novel brings together two traditionally antagonistic fields, book history and narrative theory, to challenge established theories of "the rise of the novel." Covering British novelists from Richardson to George Eliot, this study asks why the epistolary novel disappeared, how the book review emerged, and how editors' reproduction of old texts has shaped authors' production of new ones. This provocative book promises to change the way we think about the future of intellectual property, and the role that anthologies play in the classroom.
