Book Description
Finite element model updating has emerged in the 1990s as a subject of immense importance to the design, construction and maintenance of mechanical systems and civil engineering structures. This book, the first on the subject, sets out to explain the principles of model updating, not only as a research text, but also as a guide for the practising engineer who wants to get acquainted with, or use, updating techniques. It covers all aspects of model preparation and data acquisition that are necessary for updating. The various methods for parameter selection, error localisation, sensitivity and parameter estimation are described in detail and illustrated with examples. The examples can be easily replicated and expanded in order to reinforce understanding. The book is aimed at researchers, postgraduate students and practising engineers.
Book Description
Introduction to sequential decision processes covers use of dynamic programming in studying models of resource allocation, methods for approximating solutions of control problems in continuous time, production control, decision-making in the face of an uncertain future, and inventory control models. A prior course in operations research is prerequisite. 1982 edition.

Book Description
This volume is devoted to some of the most biologically significant control problems governed by continuous age-dependent population dynamics. It investigates the existence, uniqueness, positivity, and asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of the continuous age-structured models. Some comparison results are also established. In the optimal control problems the emphasis is on first order necessary conditions of optimality. These conditions allow the determination of the optimal control or the approximation of the optimal control problem. The exact controllability for some models with diffusion and internal control is also studied. These subjects are treated using new concepts and techniques of modern optimal control theory, such as Clarke's generalized gradient, Ekeland's variational principle, Hamilton-Jacobi equations, and Carleman estimates. A background in advanced calculus and partial differential equations is required.
Audience: This work will be of interest to students in mathematics, biology, and engineering, and researchers in applied mathematics, control theory, and biology.

Book Description
This volume, devoted to variational analysis and its applications, is made up of refereed contributions, which provide an outline of the field. New results, which enlarge the field of applications in variational analysis, are presented; they deal with vectorial analysis, time dependent variational analysis, exact penalization, high order derivatives, geometric aspects, distance functions and logquadratic proximal methodology.
The new theoretical results make it possible to improve, in a remarkable way, the study of significant problems arising from the applied sciences, such as the continuum model of transportation, unilateral problems, multicriteria spatial price models, network equilibrium problems and many others. Moreover, the progress made in the field also makes it possible to handle problems whose equilibrium conditions are not obtained by the minimization of a functional. These problems obey a more realistic equilibrium condition expressed by a generalized orthogonality (complementarity) condition, which enriches our knowledge of the equilibrium behavior.
Book Description
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 28th International Conference on Applications and Theory of Petri Nets and Other Models of Concurrency, ICATPN 2007, held in Siedlce, Poland, in June 2007.

Book Description
Equilibrium is a concept used in operations research and economics to understand the interplay of factors and problems arising from competitive systems in the economic world. The problems in this area are large and complex and have involved a variety of mathematical methodologies.
In this monograph, the authors have widened the scope of theoretical work with a new approach, `projected dynamical systems theory', to previous work in variational inequality theory. While most classical work in this area is static, the introduction to the theory of projected dynamical systems will allow many real-life dynamic situations and problems to be handled and modeled. This monograph includes:
- a new theoretical approach, `projected dynamical system', which allows the researcher to model real-life situations more accurately;
- new mathematical methods allowing researchers to combine other theoretical approaches with the projected dynamical systems approach;
- a framework in which research can adequately model natural, financial and human (real life) situations in competitive equilibrium problems;
- the computational and numerical methods for the implementation of the methods and theory discussed in the book;
- stability analysis, algorithms and computational procedures are offered for each set of applications.

Book Description
1995 marked the 50th anniversary of Stefan Banach's death. Until now, the general English speaking public has had no access to an in-depth life story of a mathematician whose name is one of those most often encountered in modern mathematical research. This small volume, originally written in Polish by a well-known reporter, is an effort to fill that gap in the biographical literature. It is based on original archival sources, dozens of interviews with people who knew and remember Banach, and conversations with mathematicians who are familiar with Banach's work and its impact on modern mathematics. The author presents engaging descriptions of Banach's personality and the unusual milieu in which he worked. Further, Chapter V focuses on the famous Scottish café, which like Banach himself, has achieved a mythical dimension in mathematical lore. The English edition has been revised to include new materials and many photographs, and to reflect the interests of a broader international audience.

Appleton & Lange Review of Mammography
ASIN: 0275981886 |
Book Description
Writing to be understood by the layreader, Dr. Finkel shows how breast cancer develops and explains the controversy surrounding mammography. How valid are the screenings? Who should be screened? How frequently? At what age? Should women be screened at all? This book dissects the issues to help discern answers. Above all, says Dr. Finkel, women need to make informed decisions, and to do what they need to understand the potential benefits and potential harms accompanying mammography. This book includes a timeline showing changing public advice on mammography across the years. Listings explain how to see federal reports on mammography facilites and how to find and contact support groups. Dr. Finkel details the development of breast cancer and its various types of tumors, the treatment options, and the psychological effects. Also provided are techniques for--and questions to ask when--communicating with your doctor in order to make informed decisions.
Customer Reviews:
Very accessible and interesting!.......2006-02-20
This book is very well written and weaves an interesting dialog about the cross-over between science and politics with regard to patient health issues. I found it very useful! You don't have to be a doctor or medical professional to understand what Dr Finkel is talking about, which makes it one of the few books about health that has widespread appeal along with being very informative. Definitely buy this book if you want to learn more about an important topic and its treatment in today's society.
Book Description
In this lively and engaging history, Madelon Powers recreates the daily life of the barroom, exploring what it was like to be a "regular" in the old-time saloon of pre-prohibition industrial America. Through an examination of saloongoers across America, her investigation offers a fascinating look at rich lore of the barroom—its many games, stories, songs, free lunch customs, and especially its elaborate system of drinking rituals that have been passed on for decades.
"A free-pouring blend of astonishing facts, folklore and firsthand period observations. . . . It's the rich details that'll inspire the casual reader to drink deep from this tap of knowledge."—Don Waller, USA Today recommended reading
"A surprise on every page."—Publishers Weekly
"Here we get social history that appreciates the bar talk even while dissecting its marvelous rituals."—Library Journal, starred review
"Careful scholarship with an anecdotal flair to please even the most sober of readers."—Nina C. Ayoub, Chronicle of Higher Education
Customer Reviews:
Pour Yourself a Pint and Curl Up With This Book.......2000-11-01
As Powers states in her introduction, much of the historical literature dealing with drinking and saloon culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries has been drawn from the reports of temperance advocates and middle-class progressives, who had a decidily negative view of the "poor man's club" and the activities that went on within them. In Faces Along the Bar, Madelon Powers turns this narrative around by allowing the workingmen to speak for themselves. Through the careful analysis of popular literature, songs, and traditional sources, the author has crafted a solid work of social and cultural history that places saloons and drinking in the proper context of the everyday lives of the urban working class. Her examinations of the origins of the "free lunch," "treating," and "clubbing" are insightful, and should challenge each and everyone of us who takes the many facets of our collective culture for granted. Highly recommeded.
Book Description
Perfect Acts of Architecture presents six sets of highly inventive drawings by contemporary avant-garde architects Rem Koolhaas and Elia Zenghelis, Peter Eisenman, Bernard Tschumi, Daniel Libeskind, and Thom Mayne. Created between 1972 and 1988, when many architects turned to teaching because economic conditions had drastically curtailed building commissions, these works reflect the period's intellectual debates and demonstrate graphic experimentation as a proactive mode of research. Each suite of drawings, fully illustrated with superb reproductions, offers great insight into the creative processes of six young designers, who have since gone on to establish major international reputations. To put this "paper architecture" into a broader historical context, Jeffrey Kipnis and Terence Riley provide introductory texts as well as concise commentaries on each of the projects.
Customer Reviews:
Optimistic visions of what architecture "could be".......2005-10-01
First what this book is not. This is not a book about buildings, in a traditional sense, although all the architects with work represented in the book are actually far busier these days building real buildings than creating the sort of explorations seen here. Don't confuse this book for anything other than avant-garde drawing exercises.
So what this book IS -- well, the possibility that these avant-garde drawings can be a good thing, even a visionary and optimistic thing, that they can inspire, and finally can stretch the possibilities of what we mean by architecture. The title calls these "acts" of architecture, which really is just a bit of jargon meaning ravishingly beautiful drawings that are riffs on architectural ideas. These ideas don't always boil down into words (you could for instance skip most of the text), or comprehensible buildings, but are irreduceably visual and all exciting.
The collection presented here is a work of a generation of visionary architects now our elders and respected and all that means (like building real stuff now), but at the time this work was done these architects were effectively scribbling in their attics with no real commissions. The group as a whole was, and continues to be, enormously influential. It's also interesting to see the development of such famous architects as Rem Koolhaas or Tom Mayne (although hard to single them out amongst this group) compared to their mature and more "mainstream" production now.
One star is cut from the rating for the quality of reproductions. This is a catalogue for the MoMA and Wexner show, and the original drawings at the show were far more subtle and ravishing that the printing here. Especially the Mayne and Libeskind work suffers. Finally, Terry Riley's introduction is pitch-perfect, as one would expect.
No Substance.......2004-05-08
Notwithstanding that these projects (thankfully) were never built, they shatre the commonality of lacking any substance. The drawings are obtuse and match the pretentious texts that typify what passes for academic writing today. In the main, however, they have nothing worthwhile to say. This book might best be described as a collection of self-important musings by architects who have made questionable contributions to the cities we live in.
Perfect Acts of Indulgence.......2004-04-26
The author notes that these works were produced in an economic slump when many architects were forced to turn to drawings and teaching to suplement their incomes. In a way, that period was the beginning of the end of architecture too. In place of real design, intelligent solutions, an interest in housing and other real-world problems, the architecture of academia took root. For some, this took precedence over real building and design. What we have here is a series of absurd propositions that Kipnis (perhaps he too was in an economic slump and needed to write a book), finds more fascinating than they really are. This was the period when it became popular (amongst a self-styled academic elite), to produce incomprehensible drawings as a way of distinguishing oneself from the pack. Great claims were made about the newness of this architecture and like much of what went before, we are suffering bthe urban degredation that Eisenman, Tschumi, Libeskind et al have reaped on cities across the globe. - Flack lackey Kipnis does little more than ingratiate himself into the circle. Like his subjects, however, he has little to offer sensible architectural commentary. Avoid.
Great drawings but limited explanations.......2001-09-29
The book shows exceptional stratigical drawing from a selection of famous achitects. Although some explanations about the projects is short, this book is great for architectural students because it simply provokes thought.

Book Description
"For years, I cried, not over my own losses, but at the movies. When bad things happened to me in real life, I didn't react. I seemed cool or indifferent. Yet in the dark and relative safety of the movie theater, I would weep over fictional tragedies, over someone else's tragedy."
At age nine, Madelon Sprengnether watched her father drown in the Mississippi River. Her mother swallowed the family's grief whole and no one spoke of the tragedy thereafter. Only years later did Sprengnether react, and in a most unlikely place: in the theater watching the film Pather Panchali, by Satyajit Ray.
In this fascinating memoir, Sprengnether looks at the sublime connections between happenings in the present, troubling events from the past, and the imagined world of movies. By examining the films she had intense emotional reactions to throughout her adult life--House of Cards, Solaris, Fearless, The Cement Garden, Shadowlands, and Blue--Sprengnether finds a way to work through her own losses, mistakes, and pain.
Book Description
"This autobiographical reminiscing started more than ten years ago," wrote German-American philosopher Paul Arthur Schilpp at the age of ninety-five. "After my retirement in 1981," he continued, "I began dictating fragmentary memoirs off and on. Belatedly I was realizing how useful it might have been to have kept personal journals over the long span of my lifetime."
"But in years of wonderful vitality, which miraculously had continued into my eighties," Schilpp explains, "I was caught up with living life from moment to breathless moment. Rush there and lecture someplace. Rush home and write or edit against the next impending deadline. The professional merry-go-round was ever enchanting. The days whirled by. And now; in the quieter years between eighty-four and ninety-five, I have recalled what seems most important from the recesses of my mind."
And the record is indeed important. Schilpp knew the greatest minds of this century.
Widely recognized as a scholar and teacher, he created the Library of Living Philosophers—called the greatest work in philosophy during this century—and served as editor for forty-two years.
Schilpp also served as president of the American Philosophical Association and was consultant in philosophy to the Encyclopædia Britannica for over thirty years. He enjoyed a long and distinguished career as both teacher and scholar, primarily at the University of the Pacific, Northwestern University, and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.

Customer Reviews:
Statistics.......2007-03-26
This book is written for PhD level students. It is not an easy read, even for someone who has had statistics before. I would not recommend this text to anyone except experienced statistics students.
fooled me!!.......2007-01-18
I believed this was the text book by the exact same name instead it turned out to be the study guide for the text book. I do not have the text book so this book is useless for me. I think I am done doing business with Amazon!!
Statistical Methods for Health Care Research.......2003-06-01
A very well-written and helpful statistics book. It was required reading for a course in Quantitative Nursing Research last semester. Overall, the concepts such as t-tests, correlation and regression were explained in relatively simple terms. Examples with answers were found at the end of each chapter and the book came with a data disk. This was the most user-friendly statistics book that I have used so far!
Great book.......2000-03-14
I had a chance to review this book. I think the authors can make us much better understand, particularly one who is about to learn the concept of statistics. You can apply this book with the SPSS program in order to interpret the results. Anyway, I still like the calculation parts which are removed in this edition (3rd) compared with the last one. I think they can help someone, who is very interested in statistics, to understand better before go ahead to use the computer. It's a great book for the beginner.
A very user friendly approach to understanding statistics........1999-01-04
An excellent beginning reference book for anyone in need of understanding or interpreting univariate and multivariate statistics. Geared toward health care research, with many examples. A data set is provided with the book for students to use with different analyses. Reading audience is upper division undergraduate or graduate student.
