5 out of 5 stars Where in the World Am I?.......2007-02-08

Geography: Realms, Regions and Concepts is an excellent text which provides the student with all information relevant to understanding geography on a whole; its regions and landforms, climate, politics and people. There is adequate information for every area of the world, and I am very pleased my instructor required this text.

I would highly recommend this book or any other editions of the author, de Blij, to teachers and students alike!

5 out of 5 stars Looked Brand New.......2007-01-25

It was great to buy a book so cheap and look brand new. Instead of going to the bookstore to buy a 113 dollar book.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Maps!.......2006-03-23

I had to use the book for a geography class. Didn't really read it a whole lot, but the maps are OUTSTANDING!!! Tons of maps, full color, really well detailed. If you are looking at it for a class, GET IT!!! The maps are great!

4 out of 5 stars Concepts and Regions in Geography..........2006-02-25

Seems like the typical geography text book but it's neither dumbed down nor intimidating. The CD and website are very very helpful and interesting. The Amazon new price when I bought it was cheaper than the used price at bookstores.

2 out of 5 stars Authors biased towards India........2004-01-06

In the chapter about South Asia, the authors have written quite a lot about the "Kashmir problem" but not once have they mentioned the ethnic cleasing of 350,000 Kashmiri Hindus that took place in 1990. I just cannot believe that they don't know about this.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Textbook I Own.......2007-07-09

This text is my favorite textbook that I have ever owned, in any subject, from four colleges and universities. It is a tall book--it doesn't fit on any shelf. However, the size allows for many more graphs, maps, tables, and pictures. The paper and colors make for a visually appealing text, and the text does an excellent job of highlighting key terms and concepts.

Professor de Blij is a recognized expert on Geography education in the U.S. and his textbook demonstrates his mastery on every page. He covers physical geography, climate, history, politics, anthropology, economics, and every other relevant subject in the region. The entire package is correlated well, without getting mired in details or glossing over important subjects.

There are many features in this text that you will not find anywhere else. My favorites are the drill-downs on the world's great cities, providing interesting information and a map of Mexico City, Saigon, and many others. Another feature is the "Regional Issue" textbox that presents both sides of a current issue for a region, such as "Who Needs Democracy?" for South America. A final feature I like is his "Field Notes" section that is a paragraph or so of his travelogue and a picture as he continues to research our changing world.

This text was a valuable resource in my Geography class, is still a great reference tool as I continue my international studies, and is a fun book to flip through during "down time".

5 out of 5 stars Expensive but well worth it.......2003-08-30

I paid quite a bit for this textbook, but in my opinion it is well worth it. The book is highly detailed with lots of nice diagrams and maps. It was pretty easy to follow/understand, but contains so much information that you can be overwhelmed easily if you do not enjoy Cultural/World Geography.

5 out of 5 stars Good learning had a price, be it time and money!!.......2003-08-20

I just finished my college course "Geography of the World" using this book. Personally I found the 10th edition book very useful and entertaining. If you want to LEARN SOMETHING, get "edumacated" has one of my friends who graduated Sumna Cum Laude from Berkeley would say, buy this book. Pony up the money, bite the bullet and enjoy the reading.

This book is for knowledge and education, it is NOT for the slacker who complains because he has to read 10 pages of text every week for his GEO class. I agree that this book might be a little pricey BUT the quality is there. If you can't afford a new one, buy a used one. The book is very well structure and easy to understand, you get out of it what you put in reading it.

I read this book and determined that the world is entirely too big! Yeeesh! Also the book was way over priced. It has a lot of info, but often talks in a menagerie of metaphors!

        Book Description

Geography: Realms, Regions and Concepts 2000 This Ninth Edition of Geography: Realms, Regions and Concepts reports the state of the world as well as the state of the discipline of geography at the end of the twentieth century. To understand our fast-changing world you need a geographic perspective, and this book contains some 230 maps depicting topics ranging from environmental conditions to intensifying globalization. But geography is changing too, and our coverage ranges from classic spatial models to modern viewpoints-all placed in their regional settings. To mark the turn of the century, we have included a foldout map of the world as it was 100 years ago. It can be laid out to compare to any map in the text, and to reveal how greatly the regional geography of our world has changed in just one century. And global transformation continues. While it is not yet possible to define the outlines of the "New World Order" that has been the topic of so much discussion during the 1990s, we can discern some of its geographic components, including the growing role of countries facing the Pacific Ocean. Will a Pacific Century follow the Atlantic Century just concluded? Here you will find insights to help you organize your thoughts.

                    Book Description

Springer Handbook of Condensed Matter and Materials Data provides a concise compilation of data and functional relationships from the fields of solid-state physics and materials in this 1200-page volume. The data, encapsulated in over 750 tables and 1025 illustrations, have been selected and extracted primarily from the extensive high-quality data collection Landolt-Börnstein and also from other systematic data sources and recent publications of physical and technical property data. Many chapters are authored by Landolt-Börnstein editors, including the prominent Springer Handbook editors, W. Martienssen and H. Warlimont themselves.

The Handbook is designed to be useful as a desktop reference for fast and easy retrieval of essential and reliable data in the lab or office. References to more extensive data sources are also provided in the book and by interlinking to the relevant sources on the enclosed CD-ROM.

Physicists, chemists and engineers engaged in fields of solid-state sciences and materials technologies in research, development and application will appreciate the ready access to the key information coherently organized within this wide-ranging Handbook.

                    From the reviews:
"...this is the most complete compilation I have ever seen... When I received the book, I immediately searched for data I never found elsewhere..., and I found them rapidly... No doubt that this book will soon be in every library and on the desk of most solid state scientists and engineers. It will never be at rest." -Physicalia Magazine

Mine is clearly a minority opinion, but I think this novel is actually more complex and interesting than many other critics and readers do. I remember first reading it in a college British literature class and finding Greene's juxtaposition of a typical crime novel, the backdrop of international intrigue and the paranoia conspiracy of traitors everywhere, Raven's disfigurement, and what was for me a very moving relationship between Raven and Anne a wonderful and engaging read. I just reread it for a critical study I've been doing and, while I agree there are holes in the plot, I'm not sure they are anymore distracting than the series of coincidences that drive Brighton Rock. I read BR recently also, for the first time, and I see why critics rate it higher--the psycho-sexual pathology of Pinkie, the moral-religious issues of his "Roman" identity, but I have to say I find lonely Raven a more memorable character in many respects.

An assassination takes place in the 1930s. Britain is at risk of involvement in another European war as a result. The assassin, Raven, is on the run from the police, but is also out for revenge on his paymasters, who have double-crossed him.

I thought that this was a very dated thriller, a creaky old potboiler, in which Greene makes a preposterous use of coincidence to keep the plot going. Greene is by no means at his best - it has a contrived and very unconvincing feel to it.

Perhaps the chief interest of "A Gun For Sale", as in so many of Greene's early works, is that it reveals an England in which social tensions and violence were never far beneath the surface. The desperation of ordinary people being matched by the amorality and corruption of the wealthy.

Other than that, little to write home about.

4 out of 5 stars unlikely noir thriller.......2000-10-19

Murder didn't mean much to Raven. It was just a new job. You had to be careful. You had to use your brains. It was not a question of hatred. He had only seen the minister once : he had been pointed out to Raven as he walked down the new housing estate between the little lit Christmas trees--an old rather grubby man without any friends, who was said to love humanity. -Graham Greene, This Gun for Hire

Raven is a hired killer with a harelip. His profession and his deformity combine to give him a passion for privacy. But when he's hired to kill a socialist minister who's active in the peace movement and ends up also shooting an elderly woman from his household staff too, he's suddenly one of the most sought after men in England. And when the man who hired him, Mr. Cholmondeley, pays him off in counterfeit notes, he becomes an easy man to track. In addition, his strong sense of professional ethics lead him to try and find Cholmondeley and whoever's behind him, rather than simply hiding out.

Through a circuitous set of circumstances, Raven is helped in his search by a young woman, Anne, whose boyfriend just happens to be the lead detective on his case. She recognizes how dangerous Raven is, but feels sorry for him and, with Europe sliding into war, thinks she can use him to strike back at the shadowy forces who wanted the peace loving minister dead.

Though it lacks the universal moral tension of some of Greene's better work, this is an entertaining noir thriller. The plot depends on a few too many fortuitous twists, but if you take it in the spirit of say The 39 Steps or a Hitchcock movie, the implausabilities aren't unbearable. Perhaps the most interesting reading of the book is as a forecast of the central ethical dilemma of WWII. Think of Raven as the USSR and of Anne as the Allies. She accepts Raven out of sympathy for his physical and spiritual deformities and assumes that he, despite his amorality, can be twisted to serve her own noble purposes. In the end, a lot of folks die as a result of her naiveté.

4 out of 5 stars Flawed, but frequently sensational early Greene........2000-10-11

'A gun for sale' is considered a minor Graham Greene work, two years before his acknowledged first masterpiece, 'Brighton Rock'. Admittedly, the book is hugely flawed - the plot becomes increasingly implausible; the dialogue is sometimes false; the characterisation, especially in the central relationship between Raven the runaway hitman and Anne, sometimes doesn't quite ring true. But there is so much that is excellent - the mixture of dusty, fish and chips realism with almost whimsical fantasy, precise detail clashing with a nightmare-world of physical grotesques; the brilliant control of language, in which a deliberately limited vocabulary is used to imprison characters in a social and implicitely metaphsical destiny. The first half is a superb, almost intolerably nerve-wracking, thriller, and the second, as Raven seeks revenge during a practice gas raid, is dottily surreal. The allusions to fairy tales, history , poetry, popular music, drama, philosophy etc. open the book from its generic base, and makes it infinitely richer than it first appears. It should be read anyway by anyone who loves the cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville, who based his masterpiece 'Le Samourai' on it. A flawed, yet fascinating work.

3 out of 5 stars Not particularly engaging.......1999-08-22

This seems more to be a book of psychology than actions. I found it difficult to become interested in the plot, which had continuity but lacked spark. Greene emphasizes the inner bitterness of the main character, but the personal transformation was not as touching or dynamic as it should have been. The grossness of Raven's deformity sticks with the reader, and the scenarios are painted expertly, as usual, but this one just lacks...Oomph.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but not his best........2001-12-24

The "Three Entertainments" are exactly that, entertainments. They would be very suitable as movie scripts and to some extents are written as such. They are not Greene's best stuff, for the most part that came later. But they do exhibit most of the characteristics of his later, greater, works. Unheroic heroes, seedy surroundings, real villains. His characters have depth and insight into the human situation. The difference in these works is that the heroes pursue their goal relentlessly, the women are unquestionably attractive and intelligent, and the endings are mostly happy.

In his later works things become more ambiguous, more mature, more real. He does this without loosing the clarity, the sharpness of the dialogue, or the strength of his characters. He does not defocus the image but rather makes it even sharper so that we see more facets to the characters and the situations. Still these three works are highly enjoyable and a good introduction to Greeneland.
