    Book Description

Recent attempts to unify linguistic theory and brain science have grown out of recognition that a proper understanding of language in the brain must reflect the steady advances in linguistic theory of the last forty years. The first Mind Articulation Project Symposium addressed two main questions: How can the understanding of language from linguistic research be transformed through the study of the biological basis of language? And how can our understanding of the brain be transformed through this same research? The best model so far of such mutual constraint is research on vision. Indeed, the two long-term goals of the Project are to make linguistics and brain science mutually constraining in the way that has been attempted in the study of the visual system and to formulate a cognitive theory that more strongly constrains visual neuroscience.

The papers in this volume discuss the current status of the cognitive/neuroscience synthesis in research on vision, whether and how linguistics and neuroscience can be integrated, and how integrative brain mechanisms can be studied through the use of noninvasive brain-imaging techniques.

        Book Description

This concise, much-needed guide takes readers step by step through planning and executing field work associated with many different types of remote sensing projects. Remote sensing texts and research reports typically focus on data-analytic techniques while offering a dearth of information on procedures followed in the field. In contrast, this book provides clear recommendations for defining field work objectives, devising a valid sampling plan, finding locations using GPS, and selecting and using effective measurement techniques for field reflectance spectra and for studies of vegetation, soils, water, and urban areas. Appendices feature sample field note forms, an extensive bibliography on advanced and specialized methods, and online metadata sources.

          Book Description

Although it is our most successful physical theory, quantum mechanics raises conceptual issues that have perplexed physicists and philosophers of science for decades. This book develops a new approach based on the proposal that quantum theory is not a complete, final theory, but, in fact, an emergent phenomenon arising from a more profound level of dynamics.

            Book Description

This book addresses methodological issues of production ecology, and contains scientific contributions written by nine specialists. A central issue is the combination of the agricultural model with reliable data in relation to scale. A model is developed with data from a single point, whereas decisions are to be made for areas of land. Such an approach requires the use of a skilful treatment of available data and information. The book is divided into four parts. Advanced information science yields the best possible models in an efficient way. Geographical Information Systems combine various layers of spatial information. Statistics upscale local information towards regions and test its reliability. Modern trends in automated modeling are identified. The book is illustrated with various practical studies, ranging from the individual model to the whole European Community. It aims at a readership of graduate and post-graduate agricultural scientists, practitioners and politicians.

                  Book Description

Within the national German geoscientific research and development programme "GEOTECHNOLOGIEN", funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), the research theme "Observation of the System Earth from Space" was selected as one of 13 key areas in this programme. During the first research phase for this theme from 2002 to 2004 six projects were accomplished covering Earth gravity field and Earth rotation research. These six projects are related to the data exploitation and preparation of analysis techniques for the gravity field satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE, to the integration of geodetic observation techniques for a user centre within the International Earth Rotation Service and to improvements in observation and analysis techniques for airborne gravimetry and ring lasers. This book provides a detailed summary of the obtained results, which are relevant for a broad scientific community working in gravity field and Earth rotation research.

                    Description:
Information of crop phenology is essential for evaluating crop productivity and crop management. Therefore we developed a new method for remotely determining phenological stages of paddy rice. The method consists of three procedures: (i) prescription of multi-temporal MODIS/Terra data; (ii) filtering time-series Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) data by time-frequency analysis; and (iii) specifying the phenological stages by detecting the maximum point, minimal point and inflection point from the smoothed EVI time profile. Applying this method to MODIS data, we determined the planting date, heading date, harvesting date, and growing period in 2002. And we validated the performance of the method against statistical data in 30 paddy fields. As for the filtering, we adopted wavelet and Fourier transforms. Three types of mother wavelet (Daubechies, Symlet and Coiflet) were used in Wavelet transform. As the results of validation, the wavelet transform performed better than the Fourier transform. Specifically, the case using Coiflet (order=4) gave remarkably good results in determining phenological stages and growing periods. The root mean square errors of the estimated phenological dates against the statistical data were: 12.1 days for planting date, 9.0 days for heading date, 10.6 days for harvesting date, and 11.0 days for growing period. The method using wavelet transform with Coiflet (order=4) allows the determination of regional characteristics of rice phenology. We proposed this new method using the wavelet transform; Wavelet based Filter for determining Crop Phenology (WFCP).

                          Description:
Effective implementation of national and European policy on the environment requires the design and utilisation of multi-scale environmental monitoring and information distribution systems. To be cost effective, consistent and well supported, any environmental monitoring scheme will need to serve multiple end users. The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (CEH), in the UK and the EU, is addressing the issues of environmental data collection at a range of different scales, creating a structure to integrate detailed field-based measurements with information from remote sensing. CEH undertakes 'Countryside Surveys' that comprise sample-based field surveys and land cover maps from satellite images. Integration and inter-calibration of the data for the field surveys and remotely sensed maps is creating a unified product that exploits the strengths of each. In Europe, land cover maps produced as part of the CORINE programme have a coarser spatial resolution, thus the UK contributions to CORINE are generalisations of the national products. The UK can be seen to have an integrated environmental assessment from field to European scales. The European Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programme aims to improve ecological assessment through the development of standard products and operational delivery services at continental scales. GMES must build on programmes such as Countryside Survey and CORINE to deliver data and information for truly multi-scale, multi-use landscape level environmental applications across Europe. This paper therefore aims to describe emerging systems in the UK and the European Union to assist the collection and analysis of environmental data at a range of different scales through the integration of detailed field-based measurements with information from remote sensing.

                            Book Description

The discovery of the Nanotube in 1991 by electron microscopy has ushered in the era of Nanoscience. The atomic-resolution electron microscope has been a crucial tool in this effort. This book gives the basic theoretical background needed to understand how electron microscopes allow us to see atoms, together with highly practical advice for electron microscope operators. The book covers the usefulness of seeing atoms in the semiconductor industry, in materials science (where scientists strive to make new lighter, stronger, cheaper materials), and condensed matter physics (for example in the study of the new superconductors). Biologists have recently used the atomic-resolution electron microscope to obtain three-dimensional images of the Ribosome, work which is covered in this book. The book also shows how the ability to see atomic arrangements has helped us understand the properties of matter. This new third edition of the standard text retains the early sections on the fundamentals of electron optics, linear imaging theory with partial coherence and multiple-scattering theory. Also preserved are updated earlier sections on practical methods, with detailed step-by-step accounts of the procedures needed to obtain the highest quality images of the arrangement of atoms in thin crystals using a modern electron microscope. The sections on applications of atomic-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) have been extensively updated, including descriptions of HREM in the semiconductor industry, superconductor research, solid state chemistry and nanoscience, as well as metallurgy, mineralogy, condensed matter physics, materials science and biology. Entirely new sections have been added on electron holography, aberration correctors, field-emission guns, imaging filters, HREM in biology and on organic crystals, super-resolution methods, Ptychography, CCD cameras and Image plates. New chapters are devoted entirely to scanning transmission electron microscopy and Z-contrast, and also to associated techniques, such as energy-loss spectrocospy, Alchemi, nanodiffraction and cathodoluminescence. Sources of software for image interpretation and electron-optical design are also given.

                                    Book Description

High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) has become a most powerful method for investigating the internal structure of materials on an atomic scale of around 0.1 nm. The authors clearly explain both the theory and practice of HREM for materials science. In addition to a fundamental formulation of the imaging process of HREM, there is detailed explanation of image simulationindispensable for interpretation of high-resolution images. Essential information on appropriate imaging conditions for observing lattice images and structure images is presented, and methods for extracting structural information from these observations are clearly shown, including examples in advanced materials. Dislocations, interfaces, and surfaces are dealt with, and materials such as composite ceramics, high-Tc superconductors, and quasicrystals are also considered. Included are sections on the latest instruments and techniques, such as the imaging plate and quantitative HREM.

                                      Book Description

During the first months of 1839, David Roberts toured the Sinai Peninsula, Petra, Jerusalem, Palestine, the coasts of Lebanon, and Baalbec, returning to England to produce a series of moving and delightful lithographs detailing the region's splendors.

As with the companion volume, Egypt: Yesterday and Today, this oversized, full-color volume contains the original plates of the first edition, arranged for the first time in chronological order, with commentary and extracts from Roberts' journal.

Each illustration by Roberts, moreover, is paired with a photograph that depicts the same subject and setting more than a century and a half later.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible Production Major Disappointment.......2007-02-10

I ordered both volumes, "Egypt, Yesterday and Today" and "The Holy Land, Yesterday and Today". Nothing could have ever destroyed the beauty of David Roberts work as this aweful production. Most plates are printed on two opposite pages in such a way that disrupts the sweeping landscape effect intended by Roberts. A third grade student could have seen that printing the book sideways in a landscape fashion would have allowed each plate to be reproduced on one page as in integral display exactly the way that Roberts intended it to be, with the text recent photograph on the opposite page.

It is fascinating how stupidity and terrible production can destroy magnificent artwork.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A magnificent book, of a special artist.......1999-01-23

This book pairs gorgeous lithographs made by David Roberts circa 1800 with photos of the sites as they appear today. Another volume "Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered : The Prints of David Roberts (1796-1864)" has somewhat better and larger reproductions of the lithographs, but lacks the photos. Personally, I think the photos are interesting, but "Jerusalem and the Holy Land Rediscovered : The Prints of David Roberts (1796-1864)" does a somewhat better job of capturing the magic of David Roberts.

                                        Book Description

In 1838 and 1839, painter David Roberts traveled throughout Egypt and across the Sinai Peninsula to Petra, Jerusalem, and Palestine. The lithographs based on the sketches and paintings he produced during these trips won him fame that endures to this day. This exceptional slipcased package presents, in two volumes, full-color plates of his original artwork, accompanied by commentary and extracts from his journals. In a fascinating comparison between the lands that Roberts depicts and their modern-day incarnations, White Star has juxtaposed new photographs from travel photographer Antonio Attini with sketches of the same site drawn by Roberts, revealing the same view, more than a century and a half later. These pairings, accompanied by an insightful text by Fabio Bourbon, provide readers with a unique perspective on changes that have occurred in these legendary regions. The two volumes are supplemented by The Life, Works, and Travels of David Roberts, a concise yet comprehensive biography of David Roberts.
