Customer Reviews:
A serious introduction to global seismology.......2002-01-29
The Lay & Wallace provides a good starting description of global seismology. Chapter 1 deals with the historical development and the topics of global seismology. Chapter 2 concerns elasticity and seismic waves. The concepts of strain and stress are introduced. The mathematical content is limited (all you have to know is the partial derivatives) and a lot of figures help you to understand. By the way, this book uses the same boxes as the Aki & Richards to focus on a particular point. The equation of motion and the wave equations are derived.
Chapter 3 deals with Body waves and ray theory. The eikonal equation is introduced, and the body of this chapter concerns travel time propagation, partitioning of energy at a boundary, wave attenuation and scattering in really simple terms. Once again, a lot of figures and documents help the understanding.
Chapter 4 focuses on surface waves and free oscillations and starts with free-surface interactions, Rayleigh and Love waves and their dispersion. Tsunamis are also considered, with only two equations but 6 figures and documents. The end of the chapter is devoted to free oscillations of the earth with once again a lot of documents.
Chapter 5 deals with seismometry, that is what are the instruments used in seismology. This chapter provides differents maps of global networks of seismometers. Chapter 6 considers seismogram interpretation (identification of seismic phases). This is applied to source location. The concept of inversion is introduced with no big deal of maths. The end of the chapter concerns then the generalized inverse and requires more maths. Chapter 7 concerns the determination of Earth structure, and appears in continuity with the previous chapter. No less than 56 figures plus documents are provided to help the understanding of the earth's structure. Seismic tomography is described in simple terms. Then each "layer" of the earth is characterized in terms of seismology.
Chapter 8 focuses on seismic sources, and introduces equivalent body forces, elastostatics, elastodynamics in a very simple way. The seismic moment tensor is introduced here.
Chapter 9 deals with earthquake cinematics and dynamics. It describes the classical 1D Haskell source, the source spetrum. The concepts of stress drop, particle velocity and rupture velocity are explicited. The end of the chapter is devoted to magnitude scales, seismic energy, aftershocks, and the scaling relations of earthquakes.
Chapter 10 tackles the problem of waveform modeling. Finally Chapter 11 deals with seismotectonics and provides plenty of interesting documents.
This book provides an excellent overview of global seismology. It should be extremely useful to teachers (valuable source of documents for your class) and also for those who want to start seismology. Additional reading will be necessary, eventually.
a very complete seismological book.......2001-10-30
This is an excellent book in seismology. It covers all modern aspects of this science in a complete way. The main advantage for both undergraduate and graduate students in using this book is that the Mathematical aspects are treatised without heaviness.
Reference book for current seismology.......2000-05-27
Lay & Wallace is an excellent blend of theory and observation. Enough equations to get you started, but not the overwhelming number you see in other theoretical seismology volumes. The best part is the reprinting of important result figures from scattered scientific journals. It is wonderful to have all these in one place. The major missing material is a treatment of computational aspects. I hope they put out new editions every few years with new figures from the journals.
Good (advanced) introdution to quantitative seismology.......1999-07-26
This book is not for the casual reader. It is written for first year graduate students. To really understand it, you need to know some advanced math,at leadt through differential equations. However, with that background, this is an excellent book. Much easier to read than Aki and Richards. I only wish the book was published when I was a first year graduate student.
There is a much better choice .............1999-03-19
This book is good only if you are not. The book
by Aki & Richards is much better for a good seismologist.

Book Description
This book is devoted to interfaces between two fluids, that is, between a liquid and a gas (such as water and air) or between two liquids (such as water and oil). The main motivation for the book is twenty years of experimentation in the microgravity environment of space, and the associated theory. This unique environment has made possible numerous qualitative and quantitative observations of effects that are masked by gravity on earth. Large liquid surfaces have been created and their stability and dynamics have been studied. The experimental insights gained have, in turn, strongly stimulated further theoretical and mathematical investigations. Advancing and receding contact angles, wetting barriers, pinning of contact lines, oscillations of capillary surfaces and fluid sloshing are also discussed.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best.......2004-02-04
Dieter Langbein wrote one of the best approaches to capillary surfaces i've ever seen. I am an undergraduate student at UCF and Langbein's Capillary Surfaces is a wonderful piece of knowledge. The examples and descriptions quite possibly explain the reasons behind capillary rise. This text has served its purpose and beyond in terms of educating the reader. Langbein might as well call himself a genius because i see the future in capillary surfaces and its application. Read this book if you are extremely interested in the reasons of capillary surfaces, the shapes they undergo, stability, and dynamics. Moreover, weightlessness is a big treat for those who want to know the effects of space.

Book Description
In a microgravity experiment, the conditions prevalent in fluid phases can be substantially different from those on the ground and can be exploited to improve different processes. Fluid physics research in microgravity is important for the advancement of all microgravity scients: life, material, and engineering. Space flight provides a unique laboratory that allows scientists to improve their understanding of the behaviour of fluids in low gravity, allowing the investigation of phenomena and processes normally masked by the effects of gravity and thus difficult to study on Earth. Physics of Fluids in Microgravity provides a clear view of recent research and progress in the different fields of fluid research in space. The topics presented include bubles and drops dynamics, Maragoni flows, diffustion and thermodiffusion, solidfication,a nd crystal growth. The results obtained so far are, in some cases, to be confirmed by extensive research activities on the International Space station, where basic and applied microgravity experimentation will take place in the years to come.
Customer Reviews:
For space manufacturing.......2004-06-07
If manufacturing in space is ever to be practical, we are going to need serious and extensive research in how fluids (liquids and gases) behave under conditions of microgravity. Which is why this book is important.
It details the boundaries of our knowledge in this field. And it comes at an important time. When the International Space Station looks like becoming established in a few years time. One of the justifications for the station was to expand vastly our knowledge of how indeed fluids will behave.
The book's discussion seems comprehensive. Undoubtedly, the editor must hope that it rapidly becomes outdated!
Book Description
The first paperback edition to include full annotations of these twenty Hawthorne tales written between the 1830s and 50s, this volume contains the classic pieces "Young Goodman Brown," "The Maypole of Merry Mount," "The Birthmark," "The Celestial Railroad," and "Earth's Holocaust," as well as
tales, such as "My Kinsman, Major Molineux," which represent Hawthorne's interest in the spiritual history of New England.
Customer Reviews:
Worth the effort.......2007-06-27
Not an entirely easy read because moral is intertwined with the stories. So if just breezing through is your goal, you won't understand or enjoy much of it. But if you take the time and exert the mental effort to try to understand the deeper meaning in these stories then, just as with The Scarlet Letter, by the time you are done reading these stories, you'll feel fulfilled somehow. You'll feel that you've read something of value and that it was well worth your time.
The Devil Made Me Do It.......2006-07-09
This publication of collected Hawthorne stories is a quite useful anthology. With 20 separate stories of the greatest renown and variety included; the reader gets a very fine spread of excellent short stories by one of America's most accomplished writers.
The title story, "Young Goodman Brown" is perhaps the best example of his famous short stories. In this tale, Young Goodman Brown takes a small trip down a path into the forest to contemplate a pact with the devil. His guilt is overwhelming. But, he notices something special on his way to meet Satan. He notices all the fine people of Salem who are gathered in front of himself, already in good association with the Dark Lord.
Hawthorne's descriptions are stark and heavily descriptive. His imagery is inescapable. And his social commentary is quick of wit and not very accepting of hypocrisy. He truly crafted his stories in a fine and substantial manner, such that they read fresh, even today so many years after their initial publication.
Of special note is "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment." The good Doctor wishes to conduct a behavioral experiment. He invites 4 of his close and elderly friends to the house. And he produces a flask of water from the "Fountain of Youth." The Doctor is successful in getting his guests to believe the source and act in accordance, seeing themselves all of a sudden much younger and spry.
Of particular interest is Hawhorne's own footnote to the story at the end which indicates that some have accused him of plagiary from another story by Alexander Dumas, but since he had written this one far before Dumas'; it is but Dumas' who gives him the honor of borrowing his original idea.
The book is particularly useful in its provision of endnotes that are very helpful in absorbing and imagining the totality of what Hawthorne was saying; particularly from a historical perspective. The book is recommended to all readers of classic American fiction, especially those lovers of Hawthorne.
