5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Birds in South Asia.......2007-09-21

A must-have for anyone serious about birds in India. A monumental effort the likes of which only Ali, Ripley and TJ were capable of.

Get one, it's the ultimate reference guide.

Goes without saying this is not a field guide, for that I'd recommend Grimett, Inskip, Inskipp's guide to the birds of India.Pocket Guide to Birds of the Indian Subcontinent

      Book Description

In this insightful book, which is a revisionist math history as well as a revisionist art history, Tony Robbin, well known for his innovative computer visualizations of hyperspace, investigates different models of the fourth dimension and how these are applied in art and physics. Robbin explores the distinction between the slicing, or Flatland, model and the projection, or shadow, model. He compares the history of these two models and their uses and misuses in popular discussions. Robbin breaks new ground with his original argument that Picasso used the projection model to invent cubism, and that Minkowski had four-dimensional projective geometry in mind when he structured special relativity. The discussion is brought to the present with an exposition of the projection model in the most creative ideas about space in contemporary mathematics such as twisters, quasicrystals, and quantum topology. Robbin clarifies these esoteric concepts with understandable drawings and diagrams.
Robbin proposes that the powerful role of projective geometry in the development of current mathematical ideas has been long overlooked and that our attachment to the slicing model is essentially a conceptual block that hinders progress in understanding contemporary models of spacetime. He offers a fascinating review of how projective ideas are the source of some of today’s most exciting developments in art, math, physics, and computer visualization.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful introduction to the projective approach in math and art.......2006-03-07

An innovative thinker and a gifted artist, Tony Robbin filters the world of mathematics through the nuances of human vision, creating masterful representations of higher dimensions. His new book stands as a testament to his meticulous scholarship of the history of projective geometry, in mathematics, physics and art. It is a thoroughly enjoyable account of how the notion of finding shadows of the fourth dimension emerged in the 19th century, permeated modern art in the 20th, and now represents one of the frontiers of computer graphics in the 21st. Along the way, Robbin shows how projective geometry could provide the key to a quantum description of gravity. A must read, for the curious anecdotes, cutting-edge science, impressive array of references, colorful art, and insight into how we can perceive the seemingly imperceptible.

        Book Description

This monograph deals with the geometrical and topological aspects associated with the quantization procedure, and it is shown how these features are manifested in anomaly and Berry Phase. This book is unique in its emphasis on the topological aspects of a fermion which arise as a consequence of the quantization procedure. Also, an overview of quantization procedures is presented, tracing the equivalence of these methods by noting that the gauge field plays a significant role in all these procedures, as it contains the ingredients of topological features.
Audience: This book will be of value to research workers and specialists in mathematical physics, quantum mechanics, quantum field theory, particle physics and differential geometry.

          Book Description

At what level of physical existence does "quantum behavior" begin? How does it develop from classical mechanics? This book addresses these questions and thereby sheds light on fundamental conceptual problems of quantum mechanics. Quantum-Classical Correspondence elucidates the problem by developing a procedure for quantizing stochastic systems (e.g. Brownian systems) described by Fokker-Planck equations. The logical consistency of the scheme is then verified by taking the classical limit of the equations of motion and corresponding physical quantities. Perhaps equally important, conceptual problems concerning the relationship between classical and quantum physics are identified and discussed. Physical scientists will find this an accessible entrée to an intriguing and thorny issue at the core of modern physics.

            Book Description

This graduate level text describes in a unified fashion the statistical mechanics of random walks, random surfaces and random higher dimensional manifolds with an emphasis on the geometrical aspects of the theory and applications to the quantization of strings, gravity and topological field theory. With chapters on random walks, random surfaces, two-and higher-dimensional quantum gravity, topological quantum field theories and Monte Carlo simulations of random geometries, the text provides a self-contained account of quantum geometry from a statistical field theory point of view. The approach uses discrete approximations and develops analytical and numerical tools. Continuum physics is recovered through scaling limits at phase transition points and the relation to conformal quantum field theories coupled to quantum gravity is described. The most important numerical work is covered, but the main aim is to develop mathematically precise results that have wide applications. Many diagrams and references are included.

              Book Description

The Maslov Classes have been playing an essential role in various parts of applied and pure mathematics, and physics, since the early 70's. Their correct definition is due to V. I. Arnold and J. Leray, in the transversal case, and to P. Dazord and the author in the general case. The aim of this book is to give a thorough treatment of the theory of the Maslov classes and of their relationship with the metaplectic group. It is (among other things) shown that these classes can be reconstructed, modulo 4, using only the analytic properties of the metaplectic group. In the last chapter the author sketches a scheme for geometric quantization by introducing two new concepts, that of metaplectic half-form and that of Lagrangian catalogue, the latter generalizes and simplifies the notion of "Lagrangian function" introduced by J. Leray. A Lagrangian catalogue is a collection of metaplectic half-forms which are themselves "cohomological wave functions", whose definition is made possible by using the combinatorial properties of the Maslov classes. The transformation of Lagrangian catalogues under the metaplectic group and of Hamiltonian flows is studied, and it is shown that one thus recovers very easily the so-called "quasi-classical approximation" to the solutions of Schrödinger equation if one introduces a natural concept, that of projection of a Lagrangian catalogue. An application to geometric phase shifts, including Berry's phase, is given.

                      Book Description

This book contains eleven refereed research papers on deformation quantization by leading experts in the respective fields. These contributions are based on talks presented on the occasion of the meeting between mathematicians and theoretical physicists held in Strasbourg in May 2001.

Topics covered are: star-products over Poisson manifolds, quantization of Hopf algebras, index theorems, globalization and cohomological problems. Both the mathematical and the physical approach ranging from asymptotic quantum electrodynamics to operads and prop theory will be presented. Historical remarks and surveys set the results presented in perspective.

Directed at research mathematicians and theoretical physicists as well as graduate students, the volume will give an overview of a field of research that has seen enourmous acticity in the last years, with new ties to many other areas of mathematics and physics.

                        Book Description

The first Summer School of Analysis and Mathematical Physics of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Cuernavaca) offered graduate and advanced undergraduate students courses on modern topics in the overlap between analysis and physics. This volume contains the expanded notes from the lectures by Brian Hall, Alejandro Uribe, and David Borthwick. The articles introduce readers to mathematical methods of classical and quantum mechanics and the link between these two theories: quantization and semiclassical analysis. Hall writes about holomorphic methods in analysis and mathematical physics and includes exercises. Uribe's lectures covered trace formulae, in particular asymptotic behavior and the relationship between the asymptotics and the geometric properties of the classical system. Borthwick presents an introduction to Kähler quantization, including the moment map, the orbit method, and symmetry and reduction. The exposition in the entire volume is geared to introducing graduate students with a basic knowledge of mathematics into areas of active research.
