If you have tried skiing and find it difficult then, read this book. As you read, you actually feel as if you are there and are experiencing the thrills which you encounter on the slopes. Skiing is only difficult when you are trying to distinguish yourself from the mountain. This is the fourth and last volume of the invaluable publication At the Frontier of Particle Physics: Handbook of QCD. In this volume the reader will find three important sections. The first is devoted to QCD-based phenomenology. It covers issues deeply woven into the fabric of particle physics: weak interactions of light quarks (J Bijnens) and heavy quarkonium physics (A Hoang). The second section is a report on recent advances in the understanding of confinement in three dimensions in the Georgi-Glashow model (I Kogan and A Kovner). The third section deals with lattice QCD (A Kronfeld) and loop equations (A Dubin and Yu Makeenko).

The five reviews in Volume 4, together with the 33 reviews in Volumes 1-3, constitute a full encyclopedia, covering all aspects of quantum chromodynamics as we know it today. The articles have been written by recognized experts in this field. Combining features of a handbook and a textbook, this is the most comprehensive source of information on the current status of QCD. This book is an invaluable resource to anyone who wishes to gain an overview of the struggle to understand the strong nuclear force. This is a struggle taking place on several fronts, and so the strategy of asking those directly involved on those different fronts to describe their work gives a refreshing---and thorough---view QCD. The article on "Crossing the Border", which discusses attempts to understand nuclear physics from effective theories based on QCD is particularly stimulating, and beautifully written into the bargain.

The eastern savannas of war-ravaged Colombia, known as the llanos, are among the most brutal environments on Earth, an unlikely setting for one of the most hopeful environmental stories ever told. Here, more than twenty-five years ago, an intrepid visionary named Paolo Lugari set out to create a village that could sustain itself agriculturally, economically, and artistically. He reasoned that if a community could survive in the Colombian llanos, it would be possible to live anywhere. The new village was named after the graceful river terns common in the area, los gaviotas.
The early inhabitants of Gaviotas soon realized that if they wanted even basic necessities, they would need to be very resourceful. So they invented wind turbines that convert mild breezes into energy, super-efficient pumps that tap previously inaccessible sources of water, and solar kettles that sterilize drinking water using the furious heat of the tropical sun.
They even invented a rain forest! Two million pine trees planted as a renewable crop have unexpectedly allowed the rain forest to re-establish itself. Paolo Lugari and the Gaviotans, in their quest to create a model human habitat, serendipitously renewed an entire ecosystem. This is why Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez has called Lugari as “The Inventor of the World."

Engaging Style.......2006-04-04

This book shows people solving ecological problems as a community. Weisman engages the reader by showing the people involved, not only the ones with training in certain disciplines, but also natives with practical solutions for living in a Columbian village. Even the children got involved in problem solving in Gaviotos.

They have learned to live in a place where there are many dangers due to drug wars, yet their survival skills are exceptional.

I highly recommend this eye-opening book

The vision described in the book is inspiring and very hopeful. The idea is to use our ingenuity in ways directly adapted to our environment so that small towns can be self-sufficient. Along the way, very clever uses of wind and water are discovered and described. If the reader is looking for great general ideas or approaches, this book would be hard to beat. On the other hand, if you are a garage-tinkerer and would delight in building the clever devices described, this book is close but no cigar. The drawings offered in the book purposely omit the most important details required to fabricate the devices in a proper working form. If you are a tinkerer and want to build these "goodies," you have three options. In the U.S., you can e-mail with the "Sustainable Village" web site and get the plans (eventually---they are not quick in responding). You can contact the Gaviotas offices in Bogota, Colombia. You can, of course, also take the basic idea and think through the details for yourself. That could take longer and be a little more expensive---perhaps. If you primarily want the ideas and the inspiration, then buy the book, by all means. If you primarily want to tinker and build, go straight for the plans.

In 1998, journalist Alan Weisman collected and presented information about a little known, yet quite monumental, village known as Gaviotas. To get there, one must travel 16 hours by car from the nearest major Columbian city, Bogotá. Even then the path there is not a smooth one; rough, muddy roads and severe political unrest serve as some major barriers in getting to Gaviotas. So why then is such an arduous trip worth it; in essence, Gaviotas is yet another tiny village located in a generally uninhabitable region and possesses none of the modern modes of transportation or communication that we are accustomed to. While in a sense these aspects may be true of Gaviotas, it is also undeniable that this community holds as one of the most efficient, supportive, and thoughtful communities on the planet.
Started in 1971 by a group of Bogotá scientists, Gaviotas originally was created as a sort of scientific experiment, a reaction to the way things were - which clearly wasn't working. A Gaviotas saying goes "the real maturity in life is to realize your dreams" and the founders of Gaviotas did just that when they decided to create their own society. The harsh life and extreme poverty that had been rampant in developing urban areas paired with the blatant depletion of natural resources was enough to spark the idea that maybe there should be a change. Yet instead of trying to make changes in the system already in place, this group of determined individuals took on the radical notion of creating an entirely new, segregated, yet completely self-sufficient, place to live. And that is just what happened.

As means to improve Spanish, my husband bought this book for me and read it aloud to me. It is a marvelous way to study Spanish. The story is simple and moving in any language. It is really a short-story that has sufficient illustrations to make it appear as if it were a novel. The language is not too complex, but challenging for beginner readers or non-native readers.
I read it the first time at age 12. It is an appropriate book for a person with a middle school reading level.
Most importantly, this book gives me flight, motivation and the desire to do just a little better in every daily task. More than a short story, it has a spark of the divine woven in the words. Simply wonderful.

Muero desaparezco y renazco cada vez que leo este libro, rejuvenecer y redescubrir la esperanza son algunos de los tantos tesoros que brinda. Personalmente, uno de los tres libros que más han impactado mi vida, los otros dos, "El pequeño principe" (Antoine de Saint-Exupery), y "Siddartha" por (Herman Hesse) Tienen la semejanza de ser cortos sencillos, profundos y eternos.
Como todo en esta vida, algunos lo entenderán, otros no, y aquellos que no lo entiendan, tendrán sus opiniones, juicios y críticas; y se preguntarán como puede haber seres tan diferentes a ellos. Estas personas son aquellas gaviotas que aún componen el bandado de la sociedad, que viven primero que todo para sobrevivir; mas cada una de ellas posee el potencial de aprender a volar y encontrar que la vida es mucho mas que el placer que se busca y el hambre que se alimenta.

Ojalá y que algún dia todos despertemos! Así... volaremos todos juntos.

Fernan Caballero is one of the great XIX Century Spanish novelist, considered the first to introduce the realist novel in Spain. That alone would have granted the author a place among Spanish writers, but the fact that Caballero is a pseudonim behind which stands a woman, transforms the author into a novelistic character in her own right.

Cecilia Bohl de Faber's life is as fascinating as her characters. Born in Switzerland, educated in France, Cecilia Böhl became a highly successful woman writer in Spain, even regarded as the Spanish answer to Walter Scott, not a minor feat in the Spanish society of that time.

La gaviota is Caballero's first novel. Originally written in French it was translated into Spanish with the author's own supervision, and immediately caught the demanding Spanish literary circles attention.

Even though this is the type of books reserved to Spanish studies readings, in this edition we took care to include just the necessary annotations as to help the modern reader sail through the novel without any obstrusive lengthy interruptions.

If you enjoy reading in Spanish, and admire brilliant prose, this is a book to read.

Este libro narra la historia de un joven doctor aleman que deja su pais rumbo a España tratando de ganar algo de dinero prestando sus servicios durante la guerra civil española, encontranto en su camino muchos pesares a causa de su noble corazon, el mismo que le llevara a hacerse admirado y hacerce de de amigos en la nobleza; asi como a enamorse de Marisal, a quien llaman "Gaviota"
