Book Description
This book describes the theoretical development of a suite of advanced scattering models necessary for interpreting fisheries and zooplankton acoustics, before presenting state of the art data processing techniques. Systematic development of scattering models of targets with different geometric and physical properties are presented, reflecting scientific advances in scattering modeling over the past few decades. The authors hope this book can also be used as a reference or guide book for acoustic scientists to understand the underlying physics behind acoustic scattering by aquatic fauna, enabling them to process and interpret the recorded acoustic data correctly.

Description:
Tracking the movements of sandeels in relation to their habitat will provide an improved understanding of sandeel ecology, including their interrelationships with predators and fishing activity. We examined spatial and temporal changes in the behaviour and distribution of the lesser sandeel Ammodytes marinus by integrating the acoustic ground discrimination system QTC VIEW with a Simrad EK500 fisheries scientific echosounder. QTC VIEW was used to identify acoustic changes in the properties of the seabed in the presence of buried sandeels, whilst the EK500 simultaneously recorded temporal changes in their distribution throughout the water column. Our results suggest that high densities of sandeels buried in sediment give a different acoustic signal to that of its surroundings. This integrated approach showed that sandeels had a diurnal activity pattern that was strongly, although not exclusively, associated with day length. Using this integrated survey method will enable large-scale cost-effective surveys of sandeel behaviour, distribution and abundance to be conducted.

Description:
Field surveys involving ship time are notoriously costly. Whilst continuous acoustic surveys provide good value in terms of their data richness and spatial coverage when compared to point sample surveys (e.g. trawls, dredges, grabs), there is scope to improve survey methods and provide value-added data. We present technical details and an example application of an approach that maximises survey efficiency and data richness through the integration of two acoustic tools: a fisheries echo sounder and ground-discrimination system. Simultaneous, integrated operation of both systems provides a more cost-effective use of survey time by eliminating the need to conduct independent coverage. The scientific benefit is that the approach removes the temporal and spatial problems of comparing data from two independent surveys. Stated plainly, it enables fish to be placed with their habitat by linking information about the composition of the seafloor with their horizontal and vertical distribution.

A great multidimensional overview of the Southwest.......2006-01-21
This is a great mix of fantastic photography and well-themed chapters on a variety of subjects, that can be informative for anybody from a first-time visitor to a long-term resident or even a native.
For example, there's a welter of geological information on types of rocks and rock formations, how bajadas, sand dunes and other formations are created, and more. Along with that is climatolgical and geographic information on the different deserts, and subdeserts within the Sonoran, in this country.
Elsewhere, you get information in brief on the location of the different prehistoric Indian inhabitants, dinosaur and other fossils in the area, and yet more on canyon. rock and other formations.
A good coffee-table type book.
Art and science come together...........2003-04-10
Very few books offer the balance of stunning photography of our glorious land with creative layout and insights into the natural sciences, especially the Earth sciences. In the past few years, as a native of the east, I have used this book to help me explore the magnificent landscapes of my new home. Mr. Wiewandt and Ms. Wilks have captured the beauty of this region in a book that is truly unique. As a souvenir of the heart of the "desert" southwest and as a planning resource for the inquiring travel, this book excels.

"If we intend to live on this planet...
we truly need to understand how it works."
John Nemerovski MyMac.com Book Review.......2002-10-24
Tucked within the pages this unusual new book is a custom-made 15" x 20" multi-color map of America's "Greater Southwest." The map, like the book, focuses on desert and canyon country of southern California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and portions of Colorado, Texas, and northern Mexico.
At the map's center is a spot called Four Corners, the point where New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Utah meet. And at the top of the map, you'll see an enlarged view of southern Utah that features the many remarkable natural wonders located between St. George and Moab. This is Desert Solitaire country, as fans of author Edward Abbey know so well.
Over 300 miles from Four Corners, author/photographer/educator Tom Wiewandt lives in the Tucson Mountains, near Saguaro National Park in the Sonoran Desert. I met him at a pot luck dinner for the Arizona Native Plant Society, and was instantly impressed by his tales of dodging electrocution while taking photos of the area's powerful summer "monsoon" lightning storms.
Imagine my surprise two days later when a review copy of The Southwest Inside Out arrived, complete with award emblems for prizes this volume has already received. Five jaw-dropping minutes spent leafing through its pages convinced me that nature lovers worldwide need to know about the book.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Southwest Inside Out delves into the geological origins of stunning landscapes that abound in this part of the world, clearly written for those of us who are curious but have no formal training in the earth sciences. But this book is much wider in scope: it offers a holistic overview that integrates scenic wonders with pre-history, plant and animal ecology, Native American mythology, recent history, and travel tips.
The lively, informative text is fully indexed and cleanly organized with side-bars for easy reading. Each page has been designed for maximum impact by the talented Carol Haralson, who deserves special mention. Wiewandt's photos are sensational, and no lesser adjective will suffice.
Seven major subject areas bring this far-ranging section of the United States into sharp focus. My favorites are:
* DUNES, with their austere majesty, hosting rugged, idiosyncratic life forms;
* WHERE WATER COMES AND GOES, explaining how horrible floods and devastating droughts will always be beyond our control;
* STORIES IN STONE, including charts and photos that place such creatures as trilobites, dinosaurs, and saber-tooth cats throughout the region.
Within each of these chapters are gorgeous landscape and nature photos, well-researched information, plus numerous illustrations and original maps. Check out Wiewandt's splendid photo gallery for sample pictures like those in his book. You can download photos from the website, but remember to respect his copyright.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tom Wiewandt is a native to the American Southwest and has led photographic learning vacations throughout this region for 11 years, establishing a solid foundation for The Southwest Inside Out - An Illustrated Guide to the Land and Its History. His co-author, Maureen Wilks is a geologist and librarian for the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources. I thought I knew the area well after living here for a dozen years, but I'm still a tenderfoot in comparison.
Two useful sections deserve special mention: "Where to Find Them" lists every worthwhile federal and state park and scenic area within this enormous geographic zone; and four pages of "Photo Tips" tell you what to do and how to do it for optimum results in such demanding light/rock/sky/desert environments.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Southwest Inside Out sits prominently on my living room table, and I could have sold a dozen copies already to people who happened to pick it up for a "quick" glance. This book is attractive, informative, well-written, and inspiring for all ages and interests. You don't need to leave it at home. It has been built and designed to carry with you on the road, to be read on the fly. I can't wait to travel to at least a dozen new places, ones I never knew to exist before visiting them through the eyes of Tom Wiewandt.
A comprehensive book, but-----.......2002-03-07
As one who finds the Southwest, particularly the Colorado Plateau, to be the most beautiful, thought-provoking, and inspiring place on Earth, I purchased this book with a great deal of anticipation. A cursory review at the Arches N.P bookstore revealed that the photography was excellent, even sublime. The collection of photographs avoids the trite, road tourist views in good measure, and presents the topics from a fresh, seldom-visualized viewpoint. The sections on slot canyons, hoodoos, and natural bridges were particularly entertaining.
The textual treatment was less impressive, dwelling in most part on fundamental things any roadie would glimpse. I would have preferred a more detailed discussion on the "why" of the formations and features. So far as gaining a deep understanding of what has made the Southwest the world's premier geological wonderland, other books may be more appropriate.
This being said, I was nonetheless enchanted by the book. I have visited every national park, most of the national monuments, and many of the out-of-the way marvels. So have the book's authors and I am impressed with their care of the subject. Especially for the first-time visitor to the Southwest, I would count the book an essential read.

Customer Reviews:
excellent - must read for beginners.......2002-01-02
I read many Mathematica books, introductory and advanced - yet this one clearly stands out (even in this high quality field).
The title and the previous reviewer suggest that this is a book for physicists or physics students. This is quite unfortunate, as it may put off others from learning proper use of Mathematica from this book. True, the examples are from physics, but most of them are elementary physics, done by students of science, life sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering etc.
The reason why non-physicists should read that book is extremely clear exposure of three areas of Mathematica: a) introductory level use of mma as a simple calculator/grapher/equation solver; b) very good illustration on practical aspects of using mma to solve slightly larger problems - showing the right _methodology_ of mapping real world problems into mma so they can be solved neatly; c) very good introduction to programming in Mathematica on the introductory to intermediate level (with some hints of advanced)
I admit to having a strong bias towards this book - it is one of many introductory books I read and I regret it was not my first one. That would have saved me reading others - beginners, intermediate and advanced alike. [OK, I read them just to compare, anyway :-)]
Very good Mathematica introduction for physics students!.......2000-04-02
If you need to apply Mathematica to study real physical systems, then i think you can find a lot of useful material in this book. The book begins with the use of Mathematica as an advanced interactive calculator and graphic display ,then elucidates its use as a programming language and finally shows a series of Mathematica packages that deal with specific problems in different physical areas. The author mixes explanations and hints with one to one reproduction of the computer screen inputs and outputs. The exposition is very clear and student-friendly.On the whole a great text!

Book Description
surrounding this complex phenomenon - one that eludes sim today, a conclusion impossible to ignore since the events in New York on September 11 2001. But what does 'fundamentalism' really mean? Since it was coined by American Protestant evangelicals in the 1920s, the use of the term 'fundamentalist' has expanded to include a diverse range of radical conservatives and ideological purists, not all religious. Fundamentalism could now mean both militant Israeli settlers as well as the Islamist radicals who oppose them, it can mean Christians, Hindus, animal liberationists, and even Buddhist nationalists. Ruthven investigates fundamentalism's historical, social, religious, political, and ideological roots, and tackles the polemic and stereotypes surrounding this complex phenomenon - one that eludes simple definition, yet urgently needs to be understood.
Customer Reviews:
Definition & history with feminist, economic & political implications.......2007-06-13
This is such an excellent little book, I have to say that it's probably the best book I've read in the last couple of years. Although fundamentalism is a product of Protestant Christianity, Ruthven takes you through examples in Islamic, Jewish, Hindu and even Buddhist fundamentalisms. There are explanations on what conditions enable the rise of religious fundamentalism and what tempers it. The book introduces issues affecting fundamentalism such as: identity, modernity, traditionalism and how religious fundamentalism is intended as a backstop against modernity, yet is ironically made more secular in the process. The author mainly focuses on examples of international political-religious conflicts as a way to explain fundamentalism's connection to politics. In addition, Ruthven explores the role of women in societies influenced by fundamentalism. This is an amazing and wonderful book which is incredibly well-written and extremely timely. I highly recommend it and I'm looking forward to reading more from this series and from Malise Ruthven.
Book Description
This book charts a path through the outpouring of efforts to understand and explain modern terrorism, by asking what makes terrorism different from other forms of political, military action; what makes it effective; and what can be done about it. It unravels complex central questions such as whether terrorists are criminals, whether terrorism is a kind of war, what kind of threat terrorism represents, how far media publicity sustains terrorism, and whether democracy is especially vulnerable to terrorist attack. It examines the historical ideological and local roots of terrorist violence, and the success of specific terrorist and anti-terrorist campaigns in the more distant as well as the recent past.
Customer Reviews:
Helpful and at times insightful.......2005-01-15
Charles Townshend has written a helpful introduction to the subject of terrorism. He begins by discussing the definition of terrorism, a task more difficult than it might seem. He indicates that terrorism is often a matter of perspective since one person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter. There are also questions about what counts as an act of terrorism. Do intentions and goals make some acts terrorist? Can a line be drawn at the kind of victims selected for a terrorist act? Townshend looks at some laws that define terrorism, USA and British law (as I recall). Even here we encounter problems because these laws could be applied to the actions of nations themselves. In my view, state terrorism is inadequately addressed in this book; I suspect because Townshend lacks a useable sense of what it might be. Yet I think that state terrorism is the easiest category of terrorism to define as well as the most pervasive form of terrorism in the world.
Townshend provides many historical examples of terrorism. They are all well chosen. He discusses the origins of terrorism in history: viz., the first terrorist groups, the philosophical patrimony of "propaganda by deed," assassination as terrorism and the terrorism during the French Revolution. He also explores different types of terrorism: revolutionary, nationalistic and religious. He ends by discussing counterterrorism as a strategy and correctly mentions the dangers inherent in such an approach. Townshend apparently believes that democracies will always be hampered in their responses to terrorism because of their high regard for human rights. Yet Townshend doesn't often discuss the many ways the "great democracies" have employed terrorism, either directly or through proxy forces, sometimes resulting in massive casualties, particularly in the third world nations. Although the western democracies might have a public relations problem in using terrorism, they certainly don't lack the aptitude.
If you want to read a short introduction to the topic of terrorism, then this will do...at times quite well.
