First Contact: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence is a quite readable introduction and look at how it is actually being done. Ben Bova, a noted science fiction writer, seems to have been quite a good choice for this book. I definitely recommend it for those interested in the subject. Very interesting and informative.

5 out of 5 stars The mineralogists 'bible'.......2003-11-21

The student edition of Deer Howie and Zussman is the most important mineralogy book that geology students should have in their collection. It provides information that not only helps while learning mineralogy, but becomes an essential and much consulted reference in later years. By limiting itself to the rock forming minerals it provides the solid information for learning real-world mineralogy without the trivial frills. This is the most consulted book on my bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Mineral Reference.......2001-10-25

Includes chapters on every major rock-forming mineral, with sections on structure, chemistry, optical and physical properties, distinguishing features, and paragenesis for almost every mineral. All this is presented in a clear and organized fashion.

Extremely useful reference book. As a grad student studying mineralogy, I couldn't do without it. A+

5 out of 5 stars An Introduction to the Rock Forming Minerals.......2001-05-12

An great book. I have the 13th impression of this book published in 1982. We used this book in second year mineralogy and found it very useful not only in mineraology but throughout the remaining years of our geology program at University. The book is easy to use and has all the different groups, ortho- ring silicates, chain silicates, sheet silicates, framework silicates and non silicates and provides information pertaining to properties, crystal structure, chemistry and paragenesis.

5 out of 5 stars A must if you study minerals.......1998-07-07

This book is an absolute must for anyone working with minerals in any way. Beeing an introduction to rockforming minerals it is very conprehensive. It is very valuable not only as a textbook but also as a handbook in the lab. As the title says it covers the rockforming minerals so dont expect to find exotic minearls. You can though expect to find a relatively detailed introduction to the most important minerals. It far surpasses any student minaralogy to my knowledge.

The tale seems ripe for tabloid exploitation: the fresh-faced blond elementary schoolteacher and mother of four just couldn't keep her hands off that 13-year-old boy. Worse yet, Mary Kay Letourneau had become obsessed with the slight, Samoan teenager while he was still a student in her sixth-grade class--and he fathered two babies with her. Yet in the hands of true crime writer Gregg Olsen, If Loving You Is Wrong becomes a poignant profile of an emotionally stunted young woman tightly wound up in a web of lies too fragile to sustain the weight of her own compulsions.

The facade the Letourneaus presented to the world was that of a devoted, upwardly mobile young couple. In reality Steve and Mary Kay were on the verge of financial and emotional bankruptcy. They married because she'd become pregnant and appearances were everything to Mary Kay's parents, ultra-conservative, family-values-promoting politician John Schmitz and his icy wife, Mary. Olsen, whose previous books include Abandoned Prayers and Black Widow, does a superior job with the story, interviewing Letourneau herself as well as friends and neighbors, researching and assembling the facts behind the lurid headlines in a nonjudgmental manner that allows readers to draw their own conclusions about the bigger issues at stake. Was Mary Kay Letourneau a pedophile, a child rapist, a female Humbert Humbert? Or was she, as she claims, a woman who'd found a soul mate and a true love that defied America's puritanical norms? Read If Loving You Is Wrong and decide for yourself. --Patrizia DiLucchio

                Book Description

Teacher's PetWithin hours of giving birth to her sixth child, Mary Kay Letourneau had her baby daughter whisked from her arms. She was then shackled and returned to her jail cell. Just years ago, the pretty, personable Seattle schoolteacher was living a life many would envy-- she had a handsome husband, four beautiful children, and a beloved following of students. Then she was accused of child rape, and her whole world turned upside down.Rapist Or Victim? How did a 34-year-old married teacher fall in love with one of her sixth-grade students? Was it a complete lapse of judgment, or-- as she contends-- the meeting of two soulmates? Were the two planning to run away together-- before police caught them in a parked car? Did the couple have illicit sex in every room of the Letourneau house, as the teenager told the tabloids? Read about the case that shocked the world and rocked the headlines-- about the lonely life of Mary Kay Letourneau and the young object of her obsession, the boy who fathered two of her children. You may think you know the story of Mary Kay Letourneau-- but you don't know the whole story until you've read....If Loving You Is Wrong.Includes interviews with Mary Kay Letourneau.

5 out of 5 stars A match made in the tabloids.......2007-08-21

The May Kaye Letourneau story hit us rampantly. It almost seemed like someone had made this story up. A woman in her thirties, a married mother of four, a teacher no less, who is in love with her sixth grade student? Who becomes pregnant by him not once but TWICE? And serves jail time, later to marry him! Who would do this?!

This book gives some insights into Mary Kaye that the public may or may not have known when the story hit. Her upbringing in a strict, Catholic family and her parents, models of nearly reactionary approaches to morality. Her father, however, would be the shocking disappointment, to find that he had fathered two children with a student in his class and hid it from friends and family until it too became public. Was he the motivator to Mary Kaye? Did his behavior influence her to make this decission? I would like to think otherwise, but, it will always leave you wondering. We did, however, get further insights into her marriage to Steve Letourneau, her husband. They had a shotgun wedding, were living well beyond their means, and were not happily married when young Vili entered the picture. This, however, may have given Mary Kaye the option of leaving her marriage, but certainly not to have gone down the road she did. When she became pregnant by Vili, she would later confess to a friend that her child was not Steve's. She tries to decieve everyone, attempting to sleep with her husband and convince him otherwise, but when her child was born there was no way she could have continued with the charade. When Steve finds out that the child was not his, and that the sixth grade boy who had been spending lots of time at their house was the father, he flew into a rage. Who wouldn't? Steve was not the bad guy here, even though he would confess that he too had been straying from the marriage. He would often refer to her child as "the n----- baby" and hit Mary Kaye several times over it. I don't blame him in the slightest.

This case brings up a double standard which I didn't realize existed. At my high school, a teacher had crossed the line with a twelve year old girl and gotten her pregnant several years ago. If Mary Kaye had been a man who had done that to a young girl, we would be out for his blood and ready to hang him from the tallest tree. Instead, there are those who support their union, saying they were really in love. Not a chance! What does any twelve year old know about love and sex?! NOTHING! They understand puppy love and crushes, but love and sex between two adults, let alone two teenagers, is something else entirely. Vili had said later on that he wanted to move on from the relationship after Mary Kaye had been in prison for a few years. He even went so far as to sue the Washington state school board for "mental anguish" or some bogus hang up for not protecting him from her advances. Vili's mother raised the two girls they would have, and he seems like a real loser. And yet, sweet natured Mary Kaye married her man a few years after she was released. What kind of future could these two people have? Forget either one of them being trusted with a job, a bank account, driving a car, or not scratching a scab!

5 out of 5 stars True Love? Spare Me!.......2007-04-06

I was reticent to read this book, having followed this story so closely in the media. However, I learned much I did not know about both the criminal and the victim. For those of you who may have sympathy for Mary Kay, it is important to understand that simply because she was a lonely, emotionally immature, and desperate individual does not mean she did not victimize a child. She had a sexual relationship with a boy who was ONE YEAR OLDER THAN HER OWN SON. (Think about that for a moment. Think about your own young children. Think about having sex with an elementary school student who may attend the same school as your child. Does the idea seem acceptable in any realm? NO, NO, NO!) This is not "love." This is sexual victimization.

I am a practicing psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of sexual abuse and sexual trauma. It is never acceptable to rationalize a sexual relationship between an adult and a child. The laws that exist to protect children exist with good reason. Children are unable to process adult situations and often do not understand the long term consequences of such a complicated relationship.

I have worked with Sex Offenders. The rationalizations many reviewers have expressed about this relationship are the same, disgusting rationaliztions I heard from adult male sex offenders who attempted to justify their relationships with 11 and 12 year old girls. I have also worked with juvenile sex offenders, many of whom have very inappopriate relationships with their own mothers, or have been sexually victimized in some subtle or overt manner by an another adult. It matters and it is damaging!

I do remember hearing during the trial that the defense attorneys for Mary Kay argued that she suffered from untreated Bipolar Disorder. I also remember thinking, "Yeah, right. Spare me." However, after reading this book, it is evident that Mary Kay does meet the criteria for Bipolar Disorder listed in the DSM-IV. And, common to those suffering from Bipolar Disorder, she was medication noncompliant. This is unfortunate. Had she been diagnosed and treated earlier, this entire tragic affair might have been avoided.

For those of you who prefer to paint rainbows, dream about fairies, and view this crime as a Romeo and Juliet love story... shame on you!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that tells the real story.......2006-10-08

Mary Kay, not as some whimpy poor thing but as the sane woman who took advantage of a prepubecent kid and ruined the lives of her own children to get her own needs met. Gregg told this story from all the angles and with the disspassion it deserved. Thank you Gregg!

I read this book recently, and was happily surprised to note that it was clearly written without bias. The author looked at all aspects of the story, and took into consideration opinions on both sides of the controversy. He did the nearly impossible by not imposing his perspective of the case upon the reader. After reading the book, I still don't really know Gregg Olsen's opinion...although, since the story was so thoughtfully written, I tend to think that he may view it as a love story!

                  Book Description

From Longman's Cultural Editions series, Wollstonecraft, edited by Anne K. Mellor and Noelle Chao, for the first time pairs Wollstonecraft’s feminist tract, the first in English letters, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, with her unfinished novel, The Wrongs of Woman, or Maria.

By putting tract and novel together, this text presents a far richer and more complex discussion of Wollstonecraft’s political and literary opinions. A wealth of cultural contexts bearing on the “wrongs” of woman (their social and political oppression) in the 18 th century and on the development of the Gothic and realist novel further clarify these two texts.

Handsomely produced and affordably priced, the Longman Cultural Editions series presents classic works in provocative and illuminating contexts-cultural, critical, and literary. Each Cultural Edition consists of the complete text of an important literary work, reliably edited, headed by an inviting introduction, and supplemented by helpful annotations; a table of dates to track its composition, publication, and public reception in relation to biographical, cultural and historical events; and a guide for further inquiry and study.

                  3 out of 5 stars A temple of solitude.......2005-11-04

The story of 'Mary' is all about moods.
Being badly treated by her husband, Mary flees in the arms of her friend Ann. After Ann's death, Mary meets another friend, Henry, who also dies. In a new confrontation with her husband, Mary longs for Heaven, 'a world where there is neither marrying, nor giving in marriage.'

The overall sentiment in this book is 'pity mistaken for love'.
Although Mary promises herself to 'do anything rather than be a slave', her attitude to life is resignation: 'I cannot argue against instincts.' 'Happiness was not to be founded on earth, for life is a dream, a frightful one.'

Against the sorry state of the majority of the English population (hunger, want of education, poverty, misery and dirt) or the hypocrisy of religion ('Many prayers may fall from the lips without purifying the heart'), her only reaction is melancholy: 'I have been wounded by ingratitude.'
There is also an undertone of fear of sexuality and pregnancies: 'love leads to madness.'

Mary is a victim of life. She doesn't live. She is lived.

This story is certainly not one of the highlights of English literature. Its plot is poor and it doesn't have the biting aggression of Mary Wollstonecraft's other story 'Maria'.
But it is still a worth-while read.

                  Book Description

A pioneer champion of women's rights illustrates the grim reality of 18th-century England's draconian marriage laws in the tale of a wife locked up in an asylum by her abusive spouse. Combining the spirited rhetoric of a philosophy with a narrative as gripping as any gothic fiction, this is the book that laid the groundwork for modern feminism.

3 out of 5 stars Maria - The Female Caleb Williams.......2000-07-19

"Maria" is an unfinished novel which Wollstonecraft intended to display the cruelty, injustice, and utter lack of personal freedom of women in the late 18th century. Drawing on sources from Rousseau, to her husband William Godwin's "Political Justice" and "Caleb Williams," to her own "Vindication of the Rights of Woman," Wollstonecraft sets up a scenario in which a woman falls prey to the maddening strictures of law. Although it may not initially appear so, "Maria" is very much in the strain of gothic literature. Wollstonecraft takes pains to illustrate that the gothic need not be enacted in castles or by demons, but can be just as horrifying, if not more so, when 'normal' society proves to be an intractable villain itself.

The novel reads like a philosophical treatise, the main action being life stories told by the primary characters, Maria, her mad-house warden Jemima, and her unlikely lover, Henry Darnford, including their digressive running commentaries. As the novel begins, Maria is in the mad-house, deprived of her infant daughter by her greedy husband, George Venables, whom she despises.

As in Godwin's "Caleb Williams," Wollstonecraft does not scruple to pile severe mental anguish upon clear injustices to drive home her points regarding society's treatment of women. Her most vicious attacks are reserved for the law and surprisingly, for women. The law preserves a basis for treating women as perpetual minors, and unfortunately, women, realizing their powerlessness, too often resign themselves to their lot.

Though fragmentary and incomplete, "Maria" has the same kind of power as "Caleb Williams," and the two should be read together for maximum effect. The force of Wollstonecraft's writing comes from the fact that her observations were just, and that she dared to voice them on behalf of all women.

                      Book Description

This book represents for the first time The Wrongs of Woman; or Maria and Memoirs of the Author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" have been published in the same volume, but their history and reception have been inextricably linked since the publication of both in January 1798, less than five months after Mary Wollstonecraft's tragic early death. Designed as the fictional embodiment of Wollstonecraft's notions against patriarchy and for the rational and emotional independence of women, The Wrongs of Women tells the story of Maria, who makes a disastrous marriage and then must undergo confinement in a madhouse for her rebellion against it. Godwin's Memoirs of the Author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman" honored Wollstonecraft's memory with a frank and detailed account of her life and death, but instead of the profound admiration he hoped to invoke, most contemporary readers felt shock at Wollstonecraft's sexual freedom and an odd mix of pity and wonder at Godwin's willingness to share such details of his wife's life with the world. The College Publishing edition includes an erudite and accessible introduction detailing the changing critical fortunes of both works, and in order to gain an appreciation for the rich cultural contexts of these texts, a selection of contemporary reviews appears in the appendix. In addition, Wollstonecraft and Godwin's other works and, uniquely, Gilbert Imlay's novel The Emigrants, are judiciously excerpted. Short essays throughout the text provide critical background material on such subjects as maternal breastfeeding, Gilbert Imlay, employment opportunities for lower-and middle-class women, marriage laws, and childbirth in the eighteenth century.

5 out of 5 stars excellent edition of this work.......2004-12-08

This is a classroom edition of two works important to people interested in early debates on women's rights, the history of intellectual ideas, and late 18th/early 19th century British fiction. Both _Wrongs of Woman_ and _Memoirs of the Author_ slightly predate most of Jane Austen's publication dates and are at the beginning of British Romantic literature. The books may be an acquired taste, more often read as class assignments than for fun, but really both are interesting for the common reader too. This edition is particularly good, highlighting a number of important issues-- including debates about breastfeeding in this period, the dangers of maternity and childbirth, and the limitations that women of the period faced. Austen doesn't tell you all of this in her novels, but Wollstonecraft's novel does, and Godwin's _Memoir_ of her tells in horrifying detail how she died from an infection probably due to using a male midwife (early obstetrician). Really, the editor's notes and details are the best that I've seen for readers who are not scholarly specialists--they are clear, helpful, and pertinent. ...And this isn't because I happen to know the editor and have an edition w/ the same series.
