Book Description
A unique description of the latest logging technology and how to apply it not only in standard situations but in other conditions, such as air-filled boreholes and partially-saturated formations, and for other applications such as the estimation of lithology type, shale fraction and the movement of fluids in a borehole. Standard well logging technology was developed primarily to quantify the content of petroleum in fluid-saturated sedimentary formations, however, there are many other uses for the technology. By taking a fundamental approach to tool physics, and covering more topics in greater depth and at a higher technical level, this book enables the reader to understand the technology, to ask the right questions, and then to use the answers.
It explores the physical principles behind logging methods, including modern methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance, full-wave acoustic methods, and logging-while-drilling. No other book explains all of these new techniques. However, because log analysts must deal with logs run long ago, descriptions of the older technology are also retained.
This comprehensive resource will help the log user review the results from the logging service companies, which run the logs and present the results. Throughout the book, numerical values for the physical properties of fluids and minerals help the readers convert log values to actual formation properties. The explanations of technology, practical examples, and numerical data not only make this book an invaluable reference but also permit readers to improve and correct measurements made in the field.
Standard well logging technology was developed primarily to quantify the content of petroleum in fluid-saturated sedimentary formations. However, there are many other uses for the technology. This book covers more topics, in depth, than any other book in the field. It is the only book to cover nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging and borehole gravimetry in any depth. Its high level, mathematically and technically, makes it invaluable. It is the first book to cover modern borehole imaging, measurement of fluid flow, in-situ mineralogical logging, logging while drilling, full-wave acoustic logging and electromagnetic wave resistivity, all of which have gained in importance since the first edition and none of which are explored in detail in any other book.
The book helps the log user critically review the results from the logging service companies which run the logs and present the results. It will enable the user to understand the technology, ask the right questions and utilise the answers to improve the results obtained from logging contractors. The book gives practical examples of situations in which the authors' knowledge of the technology permitted them to correct measurements made in the field.

Book Description
In this Collector's Edition, Dickens's most captivating stories are gathered together, richly illustrated with handwritten letters, reproductions from rare books, and a splendid portfolio of prints and drawings from the special collections of The New York Public Library. Among them are Sol Eytinge's beautiful and tender illustrations for A Christmas Carol, which have not been reproduced for well over one hundred years. Dickens himself said of them, "They are remarkable for a delicate perception of beauty, a lively eye for character, a most agreeable absence of exaggeration, and a general modesty and propriety, which I greatly like." Rare family photographs are also reproduced here, including a portrait of Harry Burnett, Dickens's nephew, who is said to be the model for Tiny Tim.
Along with the well-known and beloved A Christmas Carol, this edition presents several works which may be less familiar, including "Mrs. Gamp," "Sikes and Nancy," and "The Trial from Pickwick." Altogether, it's as though a glorious host of Dickens's incomparable creations has assembled at the fireside for a reader's delectation.

Amazon.com Audiobook Review
Patrick Stewart's one-man production of Dickens's A Christmas Carol played to sold-out audiences in New York and Los Angeles. In this studio recording based on those performances, Stewart is in rare form, using his considerable range of voices to play all roles, from the Ghost of Christmas past to Tiny Tim. It must be said that Stewart clearly enjoys playing Scrooge best of all--but isn't the villain always the most compelling character? Even if you feel that "every idiot who goes about with 'Merry Christmas' on his lips should be boiled with his own pudding and buried with a stake of holly through his heart," this rendition of Dickens's classic will get you in a Yuletide mood. (Running time: 2 hours, 2 cassettes) --C.B. Delaney
Book Description
From "A Christmas Carol," the beloved tale of Scrooge's transformation from humbug to philanthrope, to "A Christmas Tree," which gives a child's-eye-view of Victorian Christmas, to "Christmas Dinner," a celebration of a divided family's reunion, to the Christmas chapters from "The Pickwick Papers," the Christmas stories of Charles Dickens reserve a special place in readers' memories and hearts.
A timeless collection no miser should be without.
Every Christmas season, this heartwarming tale stirs in us the feelings of forgiveness and repentance that transform Scrooge from miser-"Bah, humbug!"-to merrymaker. Dickens's other Christmas stories in this collection also evoke both the tragedy of those who lack the Yuletide spirit and the joy of those who raise a wassail cup to goodwill toward men.

The best of Charles Dickens' work. Ebenezer Scrooge is a bloke that pretty much anybody who came across him would classify as a miserable old coot.
When he is particularly miserable towards an employee at xmas, a few spooky spectral spirits take him to task.
Merry Christmas Everyone!.......2007-08-02
The classical unabridged version of this beloved Christmas tale is finally here!
Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' is the perfect holiday gift for a loved one! This book is recommeneded for kids of all ages!

Charles Dickens for Children.......2007-06-22
After finishing the original text of "A Christmas Carol" my 6 yo child was begging for me to read the story to her. When searching for a version which would suitable for her I came across a copy of the DK Eyewitness Classic at our local public library. It was a hit with our child! The text is a close adaptation of the original text. Throughout the book there are sprinklings of historical facts which are linked to the story through "eyewitness" encounters. At the end of the book is a historical section which deals with the particular time period the story takes place. Plus there is a full page biography of the author. This is a fantastic way to introduce your children to classic literature.
Patrick Stewart is perfect in this reading!.......2007-05-18
Two of my most favorite things --- Patrick Stewart and A Christmas Carol. Now I get both in one! This CD was a remarkable rendition of A Christmas Carol. Given Patrick Stewart's English accent, it made it even better.
What can one say about this that isn't already known? Everyone knows the story of A Christmas Carol so there is no need to restate what it is about. If you have ever seen an episode of "Star Trek - Enterprise", you know what the voice of Patrick Stewart sounds like. So, I will only say imagine the English setting of the story and the English voice of Mr. Stewart and you have one of the best tellings of this story I have ever heard.
Nasty McGreedy!.......2007-02-03
One of the most amazing stories in western literature is Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol. When brought to the stage, the journey of Ebenezer Scrooge from a horrid, lonely miser to benevolent, vibrant celebrator of Christmas can be an enthralling experience. The recent production of this show at GeVa Theatre attempted to take the audience on just such an adventure.

Stories That Will Warm Cold Winter Nights.......2006-02-20
CHARLES DICKENS A CHRISTMAS CAROL AND OTHER CHRISTMAS WRITINGS is a wonderful collection of Christmas renderings previously published in various Charles Dickens collections. Always the holiday favorite during the Christmas season, old Ebenezer Scrooge and his cast of spirits set the stage for A CHRISTMAS CAROL, which is the highlight of the book. However, the other stories included in this volume are a delight to read and show blueprints to the CAROL as well as after thoughts, such as 'The Story of the Goblins who Stole a Sexton' and THE HAUNTED MAN AND THE GHOST'S BARGAIN.
Beyond the holly and the ivy, Charles Dickens' writings show readers his references to societal issues in nineteenth century England that revolve around Christmas. Dickens explores issues, which relate to class and memory in order to achieve deeper meaning and human qualities for the characters he creates. In an era where industry and consumption began to overtake the true meaning of Christmas, Dickens uses his craft to show readers to compassion still exists during hard times. The latter stories in the book exemplify his intentions, "A Christmas Tree", "What Christmas Is, As We Grow Older", and "The Seven Poor Travellers."
Dickens charming stories have a timeless quality that have been revered through time regardless of what century or season they have been read. For those already familiar with the Carol, the other stories will offer more insight to Dickens' writings. Overall, this is a great collection that may be read like campfire stories on a cold winter's night, or simply cozily by the fireplace.
Book Description
Dickens's A Christmas Carol has gripped the public imagination since it was first published in 1843, and it is now as much a part of Christmas as mistletoe or plum pudding. It is a ghost story set at Christmastime in which a bad-tempered skinflint learns the error of his ways. Ebenezer Scrooge hates Christmas and all it stands for, but a ghostly visitor foretells three apparitions who will thaw Scrooge's frozen heart. This edition includes all the original illustrations for A Christmas Carol and reprints the story alongside Dickens's four other Christmas Books: The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man.. All five stories show Dickens at his unpredictable best, jumbling together comedy and melodrama, genial romance and urgent social satire, in pursuit of his aim 'to awaken some loving and forbearing thoughts, never out of season in a Christian land'.

The Annotated Christmas Carol: A Christmas Carol in Prose
ASIN: 0786407387 |
Book Description
Over 150 years after its original composition, Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol continues to delight readers. The figure of Ebenezer Scrooge has become a cultural icon, and Tiny Tim's "God Bless Us Every One" is as familiar as "Merry Christmas." It is not surprising that Dickens' "ghostly little book," as he called it, has proven a popular choice for adaptation by playwrights and screenwriters. In everything from elegant literary treatments to animated musicals, the role of Scrooge has been essayed by actors from George C. Scott to Mr. Magoo. This critical account of the story's history and its various adaptations examines first, the original writing of the story, including its political, economic, and historical context. The major Carol interpretations are analyzed within their various media: stage, silent film, talkies, and television. Dickens' other, lesser known Christmas stories, like "The Cricket on the Hearth," are also examined and compared to the immortal Carol. Finally, a complete annotated filmography of all film and television productions based on A Christmas Carol is included, with commentary on each version's loyalty to the original text. The text includes a foreword by noted Dickensian scholar Edward Wagenknecht, and a bibliography and index.
Customer Reviews:
Very Well Done.......2003-12-17
Dickens dose a great job introducing this book. He has very high vocabulary and his words are sometimes very confusing. However, that should not cloud over the book because it is a great read. In my opinion it is a must read. I think if any Christmas hater reads this book they will love it. It certainly was interesting.
Excellent Reference Material.......2001-12-18
I've been a fan of the 1953 version of a the Carol for as long as I remember. It was family tradition every Christmas eve to watch it. I've looked at as many possible versions and have yet to find it's match. This book is an amazing resource of all the various interpretations of the Dicken's classic has gone through from early lantern projected pictures, through the silent era, talking films, television, and animated specials. The early version were fascinating and I found it a special bonus that the author made note of various television shows which featured a special Christmas episode inspired by A Christmas Carol. Who could ever forget the "Six Million Dollar Man" Christmas special using the ideas from the novel. This brought back a lot of great television special memories. I was even able to track down two hard to find T.V. animated specials shown in the early 1970's but not seen since. (I found them on Amazon). All in all a great read, especially for fans. I did not agree with all of the criticisms, and the text is a rather dry read, maybe a little too academic. But still great stuff!!
A Wonderful Treat.......2000-02-16
Fred Guida has presented an incredibly well researched and beautifully written book that blends the literary history of this story along with the history of its various screen presentations. Thank you for this unique presentation.
A Treat for "Carol" Lovers.......2000-01-16
Everyone has a favorite film or television version of Dickens beloved "A Christmas Carol." But few of us have any idea how very many adaptations there have been. Mr. Guida's wonderful book examines first the written "Carol," then goes on to detail some of the hundreds of adaptations and variations, from the early stage versions and magic lantern slides to modern made-for-television Carols. Mr. Guida discusses the major Carols with wit and humor as well as rare discernment: his love for his subject is evident. Minor Carols and variations are also covered, albeit more briefly. If you cannot find your favorite version in the text, you are sure to find it in the superb and very thorough filmography. The filmography is worth browsing in and of itself; did you know that there have been Western, country-western, rock-and-roll, and even science-fiction variations on "A Christmas Carol"? Or that actors as disparate as Cicely Tyson, Basil Rathbone, and Mr. Magoo have played Scrooge? If you love "A Christmas Carol" or simply dote on film trivia, I promise you will enjoy this book.
EXCELLENT NEW BOOK.......1999-12-19
This is not just a meticulously researched film historian's delight. It is thoughtfully written, and chock-full of information related to Dickens and A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Excellent!
