Causes and Environmental Implications of Increased UV-B Radiation (Issues in Environmental Science and Technology Vol 14)
Manufacturer: Royal Society of Chemistry ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0854042652 |
Book Description
Since the realisation that the ozone layer protecting the earth is suffering massive depletion, atmospheric science has been increasingly in the spotlight. It is recognised that we need to increase our knowledge and understanding of the likely impact that increases in UV- B radiation will have on life on earth. Charting research that encompasses the changing distribution of atmospheric ozone, changes in UV-B radiation and the consequent effects on photochemistry and biological systems in the aquatic and terrestrial environments, Causes and Environmental Implications of Increased UV-B Radiation draws together experts from the international community. Also included is a discussion of the emotive and highly topical subject of skin cancer as related to increased UV-B radiation. As an up-to-date and authoritative summary of the state of this highly complex science, this book will be welcomed by all practitioners and researchers in the field.

A 3D Display System for Lightning Detection and Ranging (LDAR) Data
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423534050 |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A378383. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Lightning detection is an essential part of safety and resource protection at Cape Canaveral. In order to meet the unique needs of launching space vehicles in the thunderstorm prone Florida environment, Cape Canaveral has the only operational three- dimensional (3D) lightning detection network in the world, the Lightning Detection and Ranging (LDAR) system. Although lightning activity is detected in three dimensions, the current LDAR display, developed 20 years ago, is two-dimensional. This thesis uses modern three-dimensional graphics, object-oriented software design, and innovative visualization techniques to develop a 3D visualization application for LDAR data.

Sensing with Terahertz Radiation
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540431101 |
Book Description
The purposes of this book are twofold. First, the various different methods of accessing the THz range discussed here should serve to convince the reader that there have been qualitative and significant improvements over older, more conventional techniques. It should be clear that these improvements enable practical "real-world" applications of THz technology, in a manner which would not have been possible before. The reader should be convinced that this is a realistic goal within the next few years. Second, the demonstrations and feasibility tests described here should serve as compelling evidence of the utility of such devices. Owing to the unique characteristics of THz radiation and its interaction with materials, these devices have substantial advantages over other, competing technologies in a number of different areas.

Analysis of USAF Medium and Heavylift Space Launch Mission Reliability Requirements
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423557832 |
The Storming Media report number is A982453. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The launch services that the USAF procures to carry DOD payloads into orbit are characterized by high risks and high costs. If a launch vehicle experiences a catastrophic failure, the cost of the entire launch vehicle, the launch processing, and the payload are completely lost (often in excess of 1,5 billion dollars.) Despite this enormous risk for the payload customer, and indeed the launch provider, launch success rates around the world are not much above 90 percent. The current USAF medium and heavylift launch systems are often based on technology that is 20 years old and older. Furthermore, little historical data exists because of the complex technologies used and the unique nature of individual missions. As such, reliability management is limited and faces serious shortcomings. This research investigates the various shortcomings associated with mission reliability measurement and management. Through literature review, case study analyses and interviews, the shortcomings are determined and analyzed. The results of this thesis effort demonstrate these shortcomings. Recommendations are presented for immediate improvement to selected shortcomings and suggestions are made for future research.

Ballistic Evaluation of the Under-Barrel Tactical Paint Ball System
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423554086 |
Product Description
This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A606063. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This report contains data obtained while conducting a test of the Under-Barrel Tactical Paint Ball System (UTPBS). This testing was conducted by the U.S. Army Research laboratory (ARL) upon the request of both the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center (ARDEC) and user representatives. The UTPBS device attaches under the barrel of either the M16 rifle or M4 carbine, similar to an M203. It consists of a trigger group and a central launch tube, which is surrounded by five rotating magazine tubes. A compressed gas bottle is located coaxial to the launch tube and supplies high- pressure gas for operation of the device. Five different types of projectiles were evaluated with the launcher. These were based upon a spherical, ruggedized paint ball with a hard plastic shell and various fills that contained bismuth powder and a combination of paint or water. The system was fired for target impact dispersion, launch dynamics, aerodynamics, and clay penetration. The ability of the weapon to target and hit a triple silhouette at 100 m was almost zero. To isolate the sources of trajectory deviation, a launch dynamics test was performed. A combination of x-rays and spark shadowgraphs revealed large transverse displacements immediately following launch. The case of this deviation was related to the shifting of the bismuth powder inside the projectile, thereby creating a mass asymmetry.

Donna Heiland Manufacturer: Blackwell Publishing Limited ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0631200509 |
Book Description
Gothic novels tell terrifying stories of patriarchal societies that thrive on the oppression or even outright sacrifice of women and others. Donna Heiland 's Gothic and Gender offers a historically informed theoretical introduction to key gothic narratives from a feminist perspective. The book concentrates primarily on fiction from the 1760s through the 1840s, exploring the work of Horace Walpole, Clara Reeve, Sophia Lee, Matthew Lewis, Charlotte Dacre, Charles Maturin, Ann Radcliffe, William Godwin, Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley, John Polidori, James Malcolm Rymer, Emily Bront ë, Charlotte Bront ë, Charlotte Smith, and Charles Brockden Brown. The final chapter looks at contemporary fiction and its relation to the gothic, including an exploration of Margaret Atwood 's The Blind Assassin and Ann-Marie Macdonald 's Fall on Your KneesA Coda provides an overview of scholarship on the gothic, showing how gothic gradually became a major focus for literary critics, and paying particular attention to the feminist reinvigoration of gothic studies that began in the 1970s and continues today.Taken as a whole the book offers a stimulating survey of the representation of gender in the gothic, suitable for both students and readers of gothic literature.Books:
