Book Description
The conservation threat represented by invasive species is well-known, but the scientific opportunities are underappreciated. Invasion studies have historically been largely directed at the important job of collecting case studies. Invasion biology has matured to the point of being able to incorporating itself into the heart of ecology, and should be viewed as extensions or critical experiments of ecological theory.
In this edited volume, global experts in ecology and evolutionary biology explore how theories in ecology elucidate the invasion processes while also examining how specific invasions informs ecological theory. This reciprocal benefit is highlighted in a number of scales of organization: population, community and biogeographic, while employing example invaders in all major groups of organisms and from a number of regions around the globe. The chapters in this volume utilize many of the cutting edge observational, experimental, analytical and computational methods used in modern ecology. Through merging conceptual ecology and invasion biology we can obtain a better understanding of the invasion process while also developing a better understanding of how ecological systems function.

This book is a model of applied ecological economics. The author presents an accessible introduction to the subject while at the same time broadening its theoretical basis by introducing a post-positivist, participatory method. He then applies this theoretical framework to case studies in biodiversity conservation, drawn from around the world and a range of different ecosystems.

A few books have been published recently, but they summarize applied mathematical methodologies toward understanding of nonlinear dynamics in laser systems with small degrees of freedom focusing on linearized perturbation and bifurcation analyses. I've been a Pearls Before Swine fan for a while, and I love this book! The comics are funny and realistic (rather), though a bit dark. But it's still worthwhile. I like how Stephan Pastis puts little comments under some comics. It's nice to see some insight from the author. The beginning is good as well, with Pastis telling how he got into the comic business. Overall, I highly recommend this book to Pearls Before Swine fans, and to anyone looking for a funny (but not always happy) comic.

I always start my mornings out with a nice healthy strip of Pearls. This first Pearls treasury is a must for all fans! It contains all the strips from the first two books (BLTs Taste So Darn Good, This Little Piggy Stayed Home), but the Sundays are in color and Pastis even includes some personal comments for select strips. The comments offer a different way to look at the strip, giving insight to what the author was thinking or how the audience reacted to the strip.

The first Pearls comic I've ever saw was the strip where Pig made Fidel Castro cry and I've been hooked ever since. I've had this collection for about a year and it still makes me laugh. A great gift for friends or yourself, an instant classic.

This book is fantastic. I am a Pearls reader, but anyone with a dry, sardonic sense of humor will like it. For Pearls fans, it has an introduction and bonus comments by the author, which are illuminating and very interesting. I laughed out loud at least fifty times while reading it, then I bought it for my brother, too. Highest recommendation!

The second (or first, I forget which) anthology of PBS and I loved it.
I have the strip about women and shoes posted on the fridge so my wife can see it every day. It hasn't stopped her from buying shoes but it makes me laugh every morning.

In this collection things begin to get complex between Brandy and Frank and Jen. At the time of writing this volume is not available in paperback, but we don't care, we just have to have more!
And there is your main problem - since this book was released there has only been one additional comic of Liberty Meadows sold (and Frank Cho seems so busy who knows when the next will be?).
We'll all be waiting a long time to see how things work out (unless you find a copy of Liberty Meadows Wedding Album which strangely circumvents the whole timeline).

A Wonderful Discovery.......2006-05-05
Frank Cho's "Liberty Meadows" is located near the intersection of Cheesecake and Comic Strip. His best is quite good indeed, with humor standing up well against the blander fair in your local paper.
He takes special care in drawing the lovely ladies in his strip, but never descends to crudity. At the end of this collection of comics is a short appendix of sketches. These are well worth having in their own right.
It is a shame Frank no longer publishes his comic strips in the paper. (He used to be carried by the Washington Post for example.) Frankly his sparkling humor and artistic drawings are simply too good for the grubby little panels that inhabit our newspapers.

The only other review as of Feb 14 2006 seems to refer to some other book called The Ride.
Frank Cho once again entertains us with some terrific comedy. The cover of the book is just a glimpse of all the oomph that the book contains. Fantastic artwork and humour combine to make this book a must have for Liberty Meadows fans.
Personally I just cant wait for the next one to come out.

Brenda Peterson has combined her talents as nature writer and novelist in this fascinating book. "Animal Heart" is an eco-adventure/love story that makes for a riveting read. I read late into the night in order to finish this novel, too captivated with the storyline to wait for another day to learn the outcome!
Brenda Peterson has a great talent for weaving together true yet scary scientific realities of our modern world with her heroic yet quirky fictional characters who work for a better world for animals.
If you believe in the great mysteries that exist between humans and animals, and those inexplicable places where are realities cross and mingle, you'll love this book. If you care about humane treatment of all animals, this story will resonate with you. And if you like an unusual, intriguing love story, this will be a good read!
I applaud Peterson for her commitment to animals and nature, whether she is writing fiction or nonfiction. And that she makes no apologies for her great passion and vision for a kinder, gentler world for all species. And the good news is the last page of the book begs for a sequel...now, we can only wait to learn what happens next!
Crimes of the Heart........2004-03-08
After demonstrating her talents as a nonfiction nature writer, and inspired by her love for our oceans and marine life, Brenda Peterson (BUILD ME AN ARK, 2001; SINGING TO THE SOUND, 2000) has returned to writing fiction with her strong, new novel, ANIMAL HEART. Published by the Sierra Club, ANIMAL HEART explores Peterson's concerns about the new scientific technologies of our "brave new world" (p. 110), namely xenotransplantation and the military's experiments with mid-to-low frequency active sonar. The plot of Peterson's novel follows two wildlife pathologists, "passionately curious" (p. 79), Isabel Spinner and her friend, Marian Windhorse, and their forensic investigation of a mass stranding of whales and dolphins along the Oregon coast during U.S. Navy off-shore testing of high-intensity sonar. Meanwhile, after another character, Marshall McGreggor, suffers an underwater heart attack, doctors implant a baboon's heart into his chest. Soon thereafter, he experiences "cellular memories" (p. 118) of life as an ape on an African savannah. When he befriends another transplant patient, Irene Feinstein, the recipient of a pig valve heart implant, the two discover they are in an "unknown territory" (p. 264), and begin wondering if their hearts are trying to tell them something--that human life and culture are not the only measures, that humans are not the only ones who matter. With ANIMAL HEART, Peterson has not only written a troubling story about scientific techonlogies gone way too far, but a story sure to touch the heart of every reader.
