Book Description
The ultimate book for the weather enthusiast or anyone interested in the oddities and extremes of nature.
There are few thrills as exciting as weather at its worst. We often hear on the news that the day was the hottest, coldest, wettest, or snowiest on record. Is the climate really becoming more extreme as a result of global warming? The facts are in this book.
Extensively illustrated with color photographs of some of the most extreme weather ever captured on camera, dozens of color maps, and tables of weather records for over three hundred U.S. cities, this book is both an entertainment and an indispensable reference.
Also included are historical examples of some of the more bizarre weather events observed: heat bursts, electrified dust storms, snow rollers, pink snowstorms, luminous tornadoes, falls of fish and toads, ball lightning, super bolts, and other strange meteorological events. Here's the must-have book for Weather Channel and Guinness Book of World Records fans. 80 color and 35 black-and-white photos, 40 maps.
Customer Reviews:
Great Data/Photos.......2006-02-27
This is an excellent book that should actually be used as an accompying text to a regular weather text. The cartography is superb and the data is listed in an easy to understand fashion
A terrific reference.......2005-09-02
This is a wonderful book on weather. And the extreme values it gives are actually fairly interesting and fun to read about. Besides, we all like to know if we're in the middle of truly unusual weather.
The book starts with heat records for every state, both absolute maximums and July averages. As well as maps showing number of days with 90-degree (Fahrenheit) or higher temperatures. We learn about temperature-humidity indexes, heat waves, and even heat bursts. As well as extremes in temperature ranges. There's information about heat extremes in foreign countries as well.
Next we get to cold weather! Heat records for every state, both absolute minimums and January averages. Cold waves. Wind chill. And international extremes. Did you know that near Lake Vostok, in Antarctica, the temperature once reached minus 128.6 degrees Fahrenheit? Brrrr!
We learn about the snowiest cities. And then we get to rainfall records for a big bunch of American cities. There are also records for varying amounts of time. What's the record for rainfall in 30 minutes? It's over 11 inches! And it fell in Sikeshugou, China. And there's material about floods, thunderstorms, hail, and tornadoes. As well as wind and fog!
There is a fascinating chapter on hurricanes. I vividly remember Hurricane Carol, which struck in August of 1954. And there's a picture of Providence, Rhode Island, after it was hit by the storm surge from that hurricane. There is also an excellent map of the American Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean coasts, with probabilities per year of being hit by a hurricane, as well as probabilities of being hit by 125 mile-per-hour winds or greater. The five areas that in 2004 that were "overdue" for a hurricane are listed. Of course, as any technical person knows, being "overdue" for a storm does not increase the chance of being hit, if anything, it decreases it. But it does imply that one may be less prepared for one when it does hit. New Orleans is listed as one of the five areas (it was hit by Betsy in 1965 and not hit again until Katrina in 2005). The book explains that the dikes protecting downtown New Orleans, including the French Quarter, from the water in Lake Pontchartrain would almost certainly be overwhelmed by a Category 4 or 5 storm surge. And that if they were, much of that area could be swamped under 20 feet of water. I wish that more people with the responsibility for protecting the city of New Orleans (or voting for its protection) had been more aware of this, so that some of the damage caused by Katrina might have been lessened.
I highly recommend this book.
Very interesting and readable.......2005-08-14
This is a well written and fascinating book on weather extremes. I'm only about 100 pages into it, but I enjoyed it so much I wanted to make a brief comment.
Although the book is mostly about extreme weather phenomena, you'll also learn a lot about more normal types of weather, since if you understand how the more extreme storms are generated, you often can understand how the less severe ones occur as well. But this is done in the context of learning about the more severe and extreme types of weather, which I find an interesting approach. After all, there isn't much when it comes to natural phenomena that's scarier than a hurricane or a tornado (well, earthquakes and tsunamis of course are right up there too, but in weather, they're the kings :-)). I once read that a typical hurricane can release each second 100 times the energy in the first atomic bomb (which was a 20 kiloton bomb).
The book discusses weather extremes from rainfall to tornadoes for the U.S. and the rest of the world, including many fascinating topics, such as internally lit tornadoes that glowed with their own light. Witnesses reported orange lightning bolts coming out of the bottom of the spout which would then be sucked up by the violent winds into the interior, thereby lighting up the entire tornado. There are a couple of photos of these sorts of tornadoes, including a black and white one at night showing two luminous tornadoes that obviously had to be internally lit. Very cool stuff and my only complaint was there weren't more photos like this, but then these are very rare phenomena.
Also, the maximum winds typically don't exceed 325 miles per hour, and most tornadoes are usually more like 75-125 miles per hour. This is just one of the many very interesting topics covered.
Overall a very cool book on weather, and I'll have more to say about it later when I finish the book.
Lotta fun.......2005-05-02
Best book on weather I've read since Bomar's Texas Weather. As in Bomar's book, the author understands that it's the unusual weather events that are of most interest to most people, and he doesn't fail to disappoint on that score. A must for all weather nuts.
Excellent and Affordable.......2005-03-14
This is an excellent book and affordable. Some other reference books are very expensive and don't have the great photos and data presentations that this book has (I still highly recommend the others, but they are not cheap). This book saves a lot of time and makes it easy to show other people exactly what you are trying to say, and they will be impressed with the quality of this publication. Excellent book in its own right and can easily double as a "coffee table book" and a great conversation starter.
Book Description
The ultimate weather book for the weather enthusiast or anyone interested in the oddities and extremes of nature.
Is the climate really becoming more extreme as a result of climate change? We often hear on the news that the day was the hottest, coldest, wettest, or snowiest on record. Recent evidence suggests that aspects of the climate are indeed becoming more extreme. Will the extraordinary hurricane season of 2005 and the record heat waves of 2006 become more common? The facts are in this book, including a detailed analysis of extreme weather trends in the United States going back to the nineteenth century.
Also included are historical examples of some of the more bizarre weather events observed: heat bursts, electrified dust storms, snow rollers, pink snowstorms, luminous tornadoes, falls of fish and toads, ball lighting, super bolts, and other strange meteorological events. 110 color photographs.
Customer Reviews:
if you think this sort of book sounds interesting, definitely get this.......2007-08-31
For some reason not everyone finds facts and narratives on outlandish weather interesting. If you do, however, this book is the pinnacle. Burt could have made it 8 times longer and I would have never gotten bored. Full of fantastical information about places you'll never go and weather you'll never see - I eat that stuff up. If you are at all interested in anything weather related, you'll be hooked on this book.
An excellent choice not just for science libraries.......2007-08-09
Is the climate really changing radically? To answer this a record of past weather extremes and norms needs to be reviewed, and there's no better place to do this than with Extreme Weather: A Guide and Record Book. Here are U.S. weather trends going back to the 19th century in a revised, updated guide which includes historical examples of strange weather. Divided into chapters by type of weather - strange snowstorms, thunderstorms and hail, etc. - each chapter pairs color photos and illustrations with maps, lively overviews, and more. An excellent choice not just for science libraries, but for any general interest lending library.

Even Better Than The 1st Edition!.......2007-07-10
This book (like the last edition) is a sight for sore eyes and should be a staple item for weather enthusiasts and meteorologists; Chris' painstaking research presents us all with an up-to-date book of extremes (including maps) which challenge the out-of-date governmental and Internet resources that have attempted, in the past, to document record weather worldwide. Chris has published additional charts, tables and maps that you just can't find anywhere else in this latest edition. I really am not a big paper book fan becuase there is a lot of inaccurate stuff out there by amateur authors but this one is on my shelf at both work and home, and I frequently refer to it when meteorological extremes are challenged worldwide.
Book Description
Twelve problems have been added to the first edition; four of them are supplements to problems in the first edition. The others deal with issues that have become important, since the first edition of Volume II, in recent developments of various areas of physics. All the problems have their foundations in volume 1 of the 2-Volume set Analysis, Manifolds and Physics. It would have been prohibitively expensive to insert the new problems at their respective places. They are grouped together at the end of this volume, their logical place is indicated by a number of parenthesis following the title.

Book Description
In this collection of monologues, short stories and poems, one of America's most acclaimed writers and actors reflects on growing up in America, rock and roll, the sex of fishes, and other topics.
Customer Reviews:
Blood & Sex.......2002-08-17
Seven drunk nurses are attacked by seven twelve year olds on customized Schwinns. A young man covers a nude female corpse with hundred dollar bills and plays Rolling Stones songs to her just before he burns her in the bathtub. A bored guitarist reaches orgasm with his Gibson. A traveler is tormented by a dead raven's feather. These and other stories and poetry make up playwright Sam Shepard's first foray into fiction and poetry (originally published in 1973). His major themes here include blood and violence, sex, love, and America. For any Shepard fan, this is a must-read. Shepard's images of America--the dry, flat desert, the endless highway, the seedy motel--are so dead-on that we are right there with his characters, looking over their shoulders as they commit sins and/or try to find some good in this world. Read it with Shepard's CRUISING PARADISE and MOTEL CHRONICLES.
Genius.......2000-08-20
Sam Shepard is one of the unheralded geniuses in American literature. This book, his first foray as far as I know into a 'scrap book' style of fiction, is beautiful, delicate, powerful, intimitely connected to the natural world and perhaps the world of spirits, as well as a pre-cursor to his future prose, poems and plays. If you wish to experience an America that has for the most part vanished for forever, an America that is rarely talked about in truth on our cable, radio, and internet, then pick up either this book, Motel Chronicles, or Cruising Paradise. All three are unique companion pieces, spread some twenty five years apart in publication, and well worth owning.

A great book for aspiring young actors/actresses!.......1998-03-29
I am a 13 year old actress and I found this book helpful. The monologues are very different, so you could probably just use this one book for all your audition needs! This is one of those books that you just have to have on your shelves.
Book Description
Plays Pleasant (1898) comprises four comedies intended to amuse audiences but also to provoke them. Arms and the Man, set in the Balkan mountains, satirizes the romantic view of war and military heroism. Candida presents the complicated relationship between a vicar, his wife, and her young admirer. You Never Can Tell is a light, witty look at an aging suffragette and her family. The Man of Destiny features Napoleon Bonaparte at odds with English mores.

Book Description
A scene-study book of thirty modern speeches for men and women. This is the book that started it all. It is the first book of original, modern monologues of ideal duration written in contemporary language. Each speech is a totality-this is, each is a complete thought embracing a point of view, and each has a beginning, middle, and end. First published in 1983, this book of modern monologues (now in its eleventh printing) remains a favorite of actors at all levels.
Customer Reviews:
Good Ones for Students.......2000-06-24
I enjoyed this book because many of the monologues were well written, and allow the actor to play with the character. The comedic ones were very funny. Unfortunately it doesn't mention from where these monologues were taken or who wrote them. It might have been in the back of the book, I only took a quick read at it, but I wish it would be included in the pages with the monologues. Nonetheless, the monologues were great. I laughed out loud in the book store when I read them. And the dramatic ones were exactly that... dramatic, which allows for some good ol actin'. Good Buy!

Book Description
While some of the thirty-two speeches included here - those from Hamlet, Henry V and As You Like It, for example - are well known and favorites for audition purposes, most are less familiar and so provide challenging new opportunities for an actor to grow. The author, a producer, director and teacher for more than 40 years, carefully analyzes the meaning of each monologue as a whole and various sentences and phrases within it. He goes on to explain point by point everything the actor needs to know about that moment in the play when the monologue is delivered. In her foreword, Joan Plowright extols, "...he's done an excellent job of de-mystifying Shakespeare in his book...No actor attempting his first Shakespearean role (or even his second) should be without it."
Customer Reviews:
Absorbing and Illuminating (and Fun, Too).......2002-06-26
It keeps getting better with each page. If you're like me, and you're not all that familiar with the real Shakespeare, you'll find this a truly illuminating read. It's accessible, it's fun, and it sure is a better beach read then anything else you're likely to find this summer. What a terrific surprise!
ENJOYABLE AND UNDERSTANDABLE SHAKESPEARE AT LAST!.......2002-06-09
Great reading in any type of weather. Witty, intellingently presented. Great choice of words. Makes William Shakespeare really a "Bill" who did write ABOUT the masses FOR the masses. Sharp focus on many of the plays that used to give me problems in analyses. Explanation flows effortlessly and make a great deal of sense, when presented with actual monologues! So few bucks for such insights. When Mr. MacKechnie urges his readers "onward" I was ready! JGRAINGER, PHD.
Superb "Advice".......2002-06-04
What a find! I bought this book on the recommendation of Joan Plowright's foreward and am so pleased I did. Mackechnie's book not only gathers an amazing amount of Shakespearean monologues, but he dissects them with considerable insight and wit. He guides you through each speech with so much info: why, where, who, that it all makes perfect sense. Any acting student would benefit not only from the technical wisdom but from the anecdotal wisdom as well. Apparently Mackechnie has worked with Laurence Olivier, Anthony Hopkins, Plowright, Ian Mckellen, among others. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Decent variety, a LOT of omissions, and where's the funny?.......2002-03-30
I bought this book for a couple of main reasons: I wanted to get a copy of both monologues from "The Skin of Our Teeth" that it has, and it had some Shakespeare monologues. I'm a comedic actress, and so I thought monologues from "The Taming of the Shrew" and "Midsummer Night's Dream" would be a good choice for me. Unfortunately, the editor has picked some non-comedic monologues from each of these plays. The VAST majority of pieces in here are dramatic monologues. It's probably a great book if that's what you enjoy, and certainly I can use it to develop my skills, but there are VERY few pieces for women that show OFF my talents. There are more comedic monologues for men, (the insult speech from Cyrano is here) but there are still WAY more dramatic monologues.
This brings me to the "Skin of Our Teeth" monologues. Or specifically, the opening monologue. The editor has taken out a sizable portion of the speech, wherein the actress breaks character to rant about the play. It's one of the reasons I like this piece so much. It's gone. AND there's no mention that the monologue has been edited. It causes me to wonder what's missing from the monologues I don't know as well. To add insult to injury, the book lists the character's name as "Sabrina." Her name is "Sabina." It's a smallish detail, but it points to a general lack of care. Again, I can't help but wonder what other details are wrong. There's a great variety of speeches, but VERY little explanation of the circumstances surrounding the speech, and NO footnotes to help interpret the older (Elizabethan and earlier) plays. It's a good idea, but the execution is sorely lacking.
