Book Description
The subject of ocean turbulence is in a state of discovery and development with many intellectual challenges. This book describes the principal dynamic processes that control the distribution of turbulence, its dissipation of kinetic energy and its effects on the dispersion of properties such as heat, salinity, and dissolved or suspended matter in the deep ocean, the shallow coastal and the continental shelf seas. It focuses on the measurement of turbulence, and the consequences of turbulent motion in the oceanic boundary layers at the sea surface and near the seabed. Processes are illustrated by examples of laboratory experiments and field observations. The Turbulent Ocean provides an excellent resource for senior undergraduate and graduate courses, as well as an introduction and general overview for researchers. It will be of interest to all those involved in the study of fluid motion, in particular geophysical fluid mechanics, meteorology and the dynamics of lakes.

torn between a textbook and a research monograph?.......2006-05-18
From the preface, "... this book developed from the need for a text suitable in teaching a course on ocean physics to undergraduates and masters course students with some knowledge of physical processes, but not necessarily in fluids." But I was wrong to think that this is a pedagogically strong textbook. Yet, it is also inadequate as a research monograph or a reference.
Also from the preface, "... will be beyond the scope of many undergraduate and postgraduate courses, so that the text provides both an introduction and a review of present knowledge that may be of value to those beginning or already engaged in research". Here, in my opinion, are the clues that Thorpe couldn't decide if he should write a textbook or a review of modern research in small-scale oceanic processes.
I believe the contents have not been tested in courses or benefited by feedbacks from students (there is no mention of course notes that the book developed from and Thorpe retired around the time the book was published). It is not a book you can acquire sound understandings. The book gives you a lot of facts, and to explain these facts, more facts. It is well-known in physical sciences that students do not learn well by just having a collection of facts.
Why it is not a research monograph is that it is not advanced, detailed and rigourous enough about the methods and findings. You feel that the book wants to stay introductory but trying to breakthrough to research.
It is not unusual to find a textbook which is used extensively by researchers and cited in papers, it is also not unusual for a research monograph to be popularly adopted as text. But in most cases, the authors still set out with a clear aim to write one type of book. To try to target readers all the way from undergraduates to researchers is a tough, although not impossible, task.
Perhaps what a lecturer can do is to browse through this book, write out the titles of each lecture to be prepared. And then will have to use other sources to fill in the bulk. What a researcher may do is to use it as a coffee-table or a bed-time book. There are lot of interesting (some anecdotal and historical too) information and photographs in the book.
I also find the extensive use of footnotes fairly annoying.
The selection of topics in the book look very interesting and attractive, I really hope it can be better written and try to cheer it on as I read. But I am left with an unsatisfactory feeling.
Book Description
How do Balinese manage to present to the world the clear, bright face, the grace and poise, that they regard as crucial to self-respect and social esteem? How can the anthropologist pass behind the conventions of such a complex culture to recognize what is going on between people, in terms that convey their own experience?
Wikan's study of the Indonesian island of Bali is an absorbing debate with previous anthropological interpretations as well as an innovative development of the anthropology of experience.
"This is indeed an important book, a landmark in studies of Bali and one surely destined to have major theoretical impact on anthropological research well beyond that famous Indonesian island."—Anthony R. Walker, Journal of Asian and African Studies

Behind the mask.......2005-11-02
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Wikan dispells the idealized exoticism spun by previous ethnologists such as Mead and particularly Steve Lansing and Jane Belo. She shows us the real Bali, rarely if ever glimpsed by tourists, in which life is a constant struggle to protect oneself from evil magic, while maintaining one's personal appearance and attitudes to avoid being shamed or stigmatized.
The book begins with a narrative of Wikan's personal experience with a Balinese co-worker. As the girl laughed and joked about her beloved fiance's sudden death, Wikan found herself witnessing the truth behind stereotypes of Balinese grace and serenity. Instead of genuine peacefulness, she realized she was looking at a mask, enforced by peer pressure and especially by spiritual terror concerning evil magic. What appear to be natural actions are actually contrived postures enforced by social and moral mandate.
Most tourists never get out of the relatively affluent region of South Bali, which is both more fertile and more modernized. Wikan did her studies in northern regions, where Western influence is scantier and where there's a good chance that one is actually seeing something at least closely resembling original Balinese culture, values and attitudes.
Negative emotions cause physical discomfort and imbalance in one's personal energy, and also in the energy of people around you. This can lead to illness or demonic possession; the only way to put the energy flows back in balance is to forget what happened, and to stop caring. "What counts," Wikan says, "is to try not to feel" (p. 189).
Anyone who believes that the Balinese are happy art-obsessed spirits living in a relaxed paradise of beauty and splendor should read this book for balance's sake. Most anthropologists who study Bali seem to have focused on the gods, institutions and rituals to the exclusion of the Balinese people's own concepts about themselves, their thoughts, feelings and personal way of handling the vicissitudes of life.
The Real Bali.......2005-10-18
All I can say is that anyone who has any deep understanding of Balinese culture will greatly appreciate this book.
Just read the first 30 pages - that is all you need to know........1999-06-11
This is one of the weakest anthropology books I have ever read. The book starts out fairly strong in the first chapter, describing misconceptions of the the West in viewing Balinese society and explaining the importance of Bright Face for the both the individual and all of society. Wikan should have stopped there. However, she felt the need to repeat herself for several hundred pages in a meandering discussion. My advice: go to the library, read the first 30 pages, then put it back on the shelf.

Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A691314. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The Air Force needs tools for analysis and evaluation of new logistic operational concepts. The purpose of this research was to conflict a discrete event simulation model of the aircraft sortie generation process to permit what- if analyses of these concepts. The current Air Force logistics operations system is reactive in nature meaning that after the aircraft detects a part failure, the maintenance person must perform fault isolation procedures and then steps are taken to repair or replace the faulty item. The Autonomic Logistics System (ALS) concept changes the reactive process into a proactive one with the employment of technologies such as prognostics and distributed information network. Certain logistics tasks can be handled automatically or autonomously i. e. ordering parts, requesting maintenance specialists, and notifying maintenance control center. The conclusion of this research was that an aircraft equipped with the ALS increased the measures of effectiveness (MOE) like mission capable rate and flying scheduling effectiveness tip to a point. The research indicated that as ALS false alarms grew these MOEs decreased and eventually were worse than the baseline system. However, it is worth noting that this research simulated a worst case false alarm scenario, a part removal and replacement with each false alarm.

Description:
Using QuikScat-based vector wind data for 1999-2003, surface wind stress and turbulent heat (Q) have been mapped for the tropical Indian Ocean (IO) to understand their seasonal variability. During July wind stress is enhanced by ~70% in the Arabian Sea compared to that during January. The Arabian Sea experiences a large Q loss (150-200 W/m^2) during the summer and winter monsoons, which is nearly 1.3 times of that in the Bay of Bengal. The southeasterlies are strengthened during the southern hemisphere winter. Empirical Orthogonal Function analysis captures different phases of monsoon-induced variability in wind stress and Q, ranging from seasonal to high-frequency perturbations. Coherency between time coefficients of EOF-1 for wind stress and Q suggests that former leads the latter with a temporal lag of 20-40 days for period >322 days. At high frequencies (
<21 days) Q leads wind stress with a temporal lag of 2 days. Possible explanation for wind stress leading Q over an annual time scale is offered based on the marine atmospheric boundary layer physics and pre-conditioned ocean surface, while on shorter time scales (21 days) ocean thermodynamics through mixed layer processes cause Q to lead wind stress.

Fun learning lectures on Physics ..........2000-02-18
What better way to share your enthusiasm of science and physics with your kids than with Richard Feynman's audio physics lectures. Since I started playing them for my six month old son, we have gradually gone through each of the series.
In the beginning I had been a little critcal of Richard Feynman. Who was this gravelly voiced man? It's kind of like saying who's Albert Einstein? Well my knowledge grew as both my son and I listened to Richard Feynman and learned not only about this amazing man but also about his love of learning.
I can't thank the team enough who has taken the time to put this series together. It is so valuable! So predominate is Richard Feynman at bedtime now that the physics audio lectures are now referred to as Grandpa Feynman's bedtime stories. My son is now 25 months.
I highly recommend these audio physics lectures and enthusiastically encourage more physics, science, geology, astrophysics and biology.
Edutainment does not get any better than this. Discover Richard Feynman and discover the amazing world around you!
Thank you Arnie and Reid
Feynman at his best!.......2000-01-31
Although this is volume 5 of the lectures on tape, it is his earliest audio lectures. This set is the one to have! In this set, Dr. Feynman covers the basics of kinematics. He discusses energy, momentum, distance, and work. Whether you are a physics student, eager to learn from the best, or just an interested amateur, Feynman puts these fundamentals into sparkling clear terms, and you can gain a true understanding of these important aspects of physics. My recommendation is to have volume I of the "Big Red Books" out and put these tapes on. You will be amazed at how much you can learn from any of them. If you can only get one of the (so far) 6, this is the one to get!

Book Description
Soon to be a major motion picture directed by Neil LaBute and starring Renee Zellweger, this is a surreal love story from the author of Nude Men. Now in paperback, Amanda Filipacchi’s quirky comic romance gives aspiring actress Anna Graham a makeover that no reader will ever forget. Anna’s payback for rescuing the eccentric scientist Damon Wetly from a subway mugger is imprisonment in a specially designed cage designed to transform her into the foremost actress of her time. How Anna succeeds in both her acting career and turning the tables on Damon is a reversal of the Pygmalion myth and a perversely tender love story.
Customer Reviews:
A step above a summer read.......2005-11-13
Light-weight page turner. Some very funny parts especially in the middle. Toward the end, the novel feels like an outline of a novel as AF sums everything up. No real character development overall, but funny, clever, exaggerated set pieces that comment on relationships & making one's way in the world. I'll continue reading her books: she's brimming with ideas and fun. But this one falls a bit short, IMO
Good but not as good.......2005-05-11
I have to say that like some other reviewers of this book, I was really looking forward to the next book from this author. Her first novel Nude Men really was and still is a sheer delight to read. I imagine that this writer had a hard time recreating the genius that she experienced when she wrote her first book and since it was such a wonderful book it was a lot to live up to.
This book is OK and the bizarre aspects could make it a very fun and artful movie, but Amanda, if there's anyway you can latch on to whatever it was that gave us Nude Men, please do it. If you haven't read Nude Men, I urge you to find that book before reading this one. It's one of those books that remind you how good, humorous, literary writing can make you feel.
Still fascinating after all this time!.......2004-12-19
I marvel at Amanda Filipacchi's originality. Her ability to turn people's stomachs and made them laugh out loud at the same time makes her quite unique. Vapor is a totally bizarre novel. We are introduced to Anna Graham, a neurotic xerox copy shop worker and ear-piercer who wants to become the best actress in her time. However, she has a difficult time getting into a certain character. Thus, her acting professor tells her she is "herself too much." But in a twist of fate, Anna saves a strange man from dangerous muggers on a deserted subway station on the same day her acting professor tells her that it would be wise for her to switch career goals. Her life isn't the same after her automaton heroic act. Damon, the eccentric victim, decides to show his gratitude in a strange and disturbing way.
It is not easy to describe the twists and turns in this novel. There are far too many of them. The characters are all quirky, including Anna's fencing parents, her boyfriend-slash-stripper-slash-etiquette expert-slash-Weight Watchers guru and the drop dead gorgeous supermodel who's in love with him. There is a lot of magical realism here, mainly centered on Damon's experimentations with his invention of bonsai clouds and with a liquid solution that helps him float like one of his clouds (very strange scenes), making the story and the characters come across as caricature. But said things make Vapor unique. Amanda Filipacchi must be quite an interesting person. You will laugh, you will cry, you will cringe, but you will mostly laugh. Filipacchi is extremely witty. There are various aspects of literature in this novel: mystery, romance, thriller, and magical realism all rolled into one. This is the fourth time I reread this novel and it still enthralls me from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book. And don't forget to also pick up Filipacchi's debut novel called Nude Men! That one is just as bizarre as this one.
Let's fly.......2004-04-22
This is a zany book. The notion of people being lighter than air is funny. It has a lot of twists and turns. It is fantastical. If anyone can win the academy award by rigorous training is farfetched. But still this is a great book, and almost as good as Nude Men. I heard that they are making a movie out of this book with Sandra Bullock. Anna Graham sounds like a Sandra Bullock character. I hope that is good too.
You have to have a weird sense of humor ---.......2003-08-28
And that's a good thing! Vapor is a great novel. From the beginning to the end, I was entranced with the author's weird and twisted sense of humor, and I loved the characters. You just know that there's so much more going on, and when it's time, you'll learn what you need to know.
I've read some of the other reviews posted here saying that the book was terrible (throwing it across the room? SHAME!), and I think that might be true for some people. Then there's the rest of us that can appreciate strange plot twists and characters that think things we would "never" think (ha, yeah, right).
So, I will leave my review at that. I laughed, I cried, and I couldn't for the life of me figure out the anagram at the end of the book (this is a theme that runs through the story).
Excellent read! If you liked Nude Men, then you must read Vapor!

Description:
Since the diet plays an important role in the development of human cancer, it is important to identify mutagens in foods. We have detected a novel mutagenic product, 4-oxo-2-hexenal (4-OHE), in a model lipid peroxidation reaction mixture [H. Kasai, M. Maekawa, K. Kawai, K. Hachisuka, Y. Takahashi, H. Nakamura, R. Sawa, S. Matsui, T. Matsuda, 4-Oxo-2-hexenal, a mutgen formed by @w-3 fat peroxidation, causes DNA adduct formation in mouse organs, Ind. Health 43 (2005) 699-701]. In the present study, the contents of 4-OHE in various food samples were determined by a GC/MS method. Commercial perilla oil (derived from the seed of Perilla frutescens var. frutescens), which is rich in linolenic acid triglyceride (TG), the edible part of broiled fish, and various fried foods contained 4-OHE in the range of 1-70@mg/g. Furthermore, from the ethyl acetate trap (extracts) of the smoke released during the broiling of fish, 4-OHE was also detected by GC/MS. These results provide a warning to humans, who may be exposed to this mutagen. The 4-OHE may be produced from @w-3 polyunsaturated fats, such as @a-linolenic acid-, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)- and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-TG, which are more easily oxidized than @w-6 fats, such as linoleic acid-TG. .
