Great uncertainty typically surrounds decisions and management actions in the conservation of biodiversity and natural resource management, and yet there are risks of serious and irreversible harm for both biodiversity and the humans that rely on it. The Precautionary Principle underlies all international conservation efforts and entails acting to avoid serious or irreversible environmental harm, despite lack of scientific certainty as to the likelihood, magnitude, or cause of harm.
This book, the first to examine the application of the Precautionary Principle to conservation, analyzes how it has been applied in the
management of biodiversity, including the impact on forests products and aquaculture, as well as wildlife and livelihoods. The book also examines how power, equity, and science intertwine in the Principle. Evidence is drawn from a vast range of countries and the book provides guidelines for applying the Precautionary Principle in all international contexts for the conservation and sustainable management of biodiversity and natural resources.
Book Description
Despite approval by Congress and the Bush administration and over seven billion dollars already spent, the Yucca Mountain, Nevada, site for disposal of highly radioactive spent nuclear fuel is not yet in operation. The reasons for the delay lie not only in citizen and activist opposition to the project but also in the numerous scientific and technical issues that remain unresolved. Although many scientists favor geologic disposal of high-level nuclear waste, there are substantial unknowns in projecting the performance of a site over the tens to hundreds of thousands of years that may be required by Environmental Protection Agency standards. Uncertainty Underground is the first effort to review the uncertainties in the analysis of the long-term performance of the proposed repository at Yucca Mountain. The book does not pass judgment on the suitability of the site but provides reliable science-based information to support open debate and inquiry into its safety.
Experts from the geosciences, industry, and government review different aspects of the repository system, focusing on the uncertainties inherent in each. After an overview of the historical and regulatory context, the contributors investigate external factors (including climate change and volcanic activity) that could affect repository performance and then turn to topics concerning the repository itself. These include hydrologic issues, the geological conditions with which the nuclear waste in the repository would interact, and the predicted behavior of the different kinds of waste and waste package materials. Uncertainty Underground succeeds in making these important technical issues understandable to a wide audience, including policymakers and the general public.

Disturbing your Sleep.......2007-05-19
I work in the field and yet, I found the revelations in book to be disturbing. It is professionally and objectively done. It is not an alarmist call to action, but rather a thoughtful description of what has been done, what is being done and what could be done about high-level nuclear waste.

Few policy areas in recent history have the attention of the Australian public and polity as much as those relating to water. Water Policy in Australia considers the current policy reform agenda from agricultural, environmental, and cultural perspectives. It presents a comprehensive account of the country's critical water issues and provides expert perspectives from behavioral and institutional economists, engineers, hydrologists, sociologists, and water law specialists.
The environment can no longer support Australia's legacy of institutions, norms, and values relating to the exploitation of water resources. Until the 1980s, the engineer was "king," and policymakers viewed water as an endless resource for driving economic growth. However, in the last twenty years, policymakers have been forced to acknowledge that it is not possible to perpetually supply more water at a low cost. Consequently, the country has begun to focus on water resource management through legislative and institutional change -- attempting to allocate water in a more economically efficient and socially and environmentally acceptable manner.
Water Policy in Australia provides insight into the challenges of institutional change, as well as valuable lessons on the design of property rights for complex resources. The editor and contributors look beyond recent reform efforts and address the hydrological, biophysical, economic, and social factors at play in Australia. The book addresses pertinent issues, such as irrigation in the Murray-Darling basin, one of Australia's largest drainage divisions; the progression from common law riparian rights to share-based entitlements that encourage sustainable water use; and the potential outcomes of the recent National Water Initiative, a wide-ranging strategy to improve water management and simultaneously maintain healthy groundwater and river systems.

Good intro textbook to seismology.......2007-01-25
I have used this textbook for an intro to seismology class in college and have found it to be very detailed and covered a wider range of topics compared to other seismology textbooks. This book focus a great deal on deriving equations, so if you are a math person, it'll be a great way for you to learn. Problem sets at the end of each chapter are challenging but not totally impossible; and like most textbooks, only some of the answers are on the back. There are a few mistakes I found in the diagrams, but not it's not a big deal. Overall, I do recommend this book as an intro text book geared towards the upper level undergraduates or graduate students.
Excellent text for undergrad/grad course........2005-07-19
I used this book in a course on earthquake kinematics. Previously I had used the Aki/Richards book 'Quantitative Seismology' and found myself rethinking my major! Fortunately I slugged through it and my fascination with seismology was rekindled by this book. It explains a lot of the concepts well enough for those with only a few semesters of calc/physics under their belts to easily understand. I was even able to use this book as a more clear reference for an Inverse Theory course I took. The examples are great, the diagrams clear and concise and the tone is relaxed. This book actually explains concepts that are not explained in the Aki/Richards book. I particularly like the section on Green's functions, waveform inversion, and moment tensors. There is even a chapter on Fourier analysis! This is a book I can go back to for clear & concise explanations of otherwise abstract subjects. My copy is heavily tabbed since I use it often. My only gripe is the size of the font and the layout. There are two columns per page so it makes for some tiny print and everything seems squeezed together and slightly busy. The authors do provide a nice web-site where you can look at all the diagrams in the book as huge images....free! The link can be found on Dr. Wysession's homepage at Washington University St. Louis.
All in all a great book on a great subject!
Fun with FORTRAN.......2003-10-20
This book is not an opportunity to use the earth to explain continuous media. Continuum mechanics explains much of the behavior that is observed on the earth. S&W is hardcore geophysics - not for the faint-hearted! The book does still use FORTRAN - can we please move on? But the derivation of the wave equation in the second chapter is a key for any PhD wanna-be to learn for their comps.

Electrostatic ion accelerators and associated superconducting linacs were the class of accelerators discussed. Continuing the trend of the last several meetings in this series, two sessions were needed to report current developments in superconducting ion accelerators. Also, many interesting recent developments were reported in a session devoted to ECR ion sources. Several applications received attention. A session was devoted to atomic mass spectroscopy. Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948), inventor of his own personal branch of Dadaism called "Merz," is best known for his collages and for his monumental constructions called Merzbau. But Schwitters' stated goal was "to erase the boundaries between the arts" - he said his poems were "a kind of drawing" while his collages "demand to be read." This collection, culled from five volumes of Schwitters' writings published in Germany, introduces the total work of art that is Merz via Schwitters' words rather than images. Included is the complete text for the "Ur Sonata," which, as renowned poets/editors/translators Jerome Rothenberg and Pierre Joris comment, "is to sound poetry what Joyce's Ulysses is to the twentieth-century novel."

Although Kurt Schwitters (1887-1948) is increasingly recognized as one of the great visual artists of the twentieth century—a recognition reconfirmed in 1985 by a highly acclaimed retrospective at New York's Museum of Modern Art—his achievements as one of the major poets and theorists of Modernism have not received the same degree of attention. This collection of Schwitters' literary work, presented by two American poets of international standing, brings the vast range and unique genius of his writings to English-language audiences for the first time.
Coining the word "Merz" to identify his one-man version of Dadism, Schwitters sought to "erase the boundaries between the arts" and to emphasize the reciprocal relationship of his visual and verbal works. Schwitters worked with and developed more new forms and genres than almost any poet of his time. The wide sweep and inventiveness of his literary output—essays, plays, fiction, manifestos, as well as poetry—reflect or prefigure movements such as expressionism, surrealism, sound-texts, concrete poetry, performance art, and language poetry.
To present Schwitters' astounding range, the poet-translators of this volume have selected poems, "proses," performance pieces, and manifestos; included complete major works, such as "Augusta Bolte" and "Ur Sonata"; offered selections from Schwitters' plays; and provided a sampler of the collaged and word-filled paintings (some in full color).

Like his Merz collages, Schwitters' poems take dissociated elements and glue them to together to make an aesthetically pleasing whole. As an artist and a writer Schwitters has the supreme ability to create beauty from cast-off fragments, using them to his own designs of witty word-play and absurd juxtaposition. Fantasy abounds and is mixed with advertisements, fragments of conversation, and themes of desire. In both his writings and his collages he sought to "erase the boundaries between the arts." Usually only known for "Anna Blume", Schwitters was an avid writer and this book collects his absurdist plays, nonsensical proses (sic), essays about his life and work (and Dada, poetry, and language), and over 100 of his unique poems. Of all the Dada literature (perhaps excluding Arp), his is the most pleasing and re-readable. Unfortuately some of his German punning and word-play is lost in translation, but can be seen in works that were originally written in English. Never before has nonsense been so emotionally charged or touching (and lets not leave out humorous and outrageous). This is the best collection of Schwitters' work in English that I have come across. Highly recommended.
